Valentina, i just wanna say you are a miracle, thanks for give us hours of this magnificent music. Hope to see you soon in the Teatro Colon again. Cheers from Argentina.
Thanks you so much for your fantastic performances in Stockholm and Norrköping. You really took our breath away and touch our hearts directly. For me it has been magic for many years now and I hope to see you again in Sweden. Have a great concert in Paris!

Bach, Busoni - Chaconne in D minor Beethoven - Tempest Sonata, Rachmaninoff - Prelude Op 32, No. 12 Chopin - Etudes Op. 10, No. 3 and 12. Piano is from 1892, so 122 years old? Man, that's crazy.
here is my answer : 1 st : Lisista Warm up 2 sd Lisista virtusita 3 rd Lisista awesome playing ! seriously i don't know, but what i can say is that you play wonderfully :)
Quite amazing. You are somewhat eccentric, but have a wonderful imagination. I believe you are attracted to this piano because it puts you in direct contact with great pianists from the past and allows you to fantasize with their spirits.. For an antique it plays very nicely. You do it justice.
We used to have a Pleyel 280 (I think) from Georg Pfeifer ( Uncle to my Great Grandfather M.V.Green) period In my Grandfather New York City house. Great voicing esp in the Middle 24 notes ( Human voicing). Sorry, I do not know why you would like the B. 290 over the Pleyel 280?
I had no idea there were still any usable Pleyels around. Next you'll tell us you will be using an Erard or found a working Cristofori that aren't museum pieces. Thanks, I always enjoy your playful approach and excellent performances.
It is''nt straight strung it is cross-strung (although it shure sounds like it !) you can see that from 3,32. Nevertheless a very fine instrument. Absolute top quality with a very clear and open sound. Ideal for romantic music of the nineteenth century wether its Beethoven Schubert Chopin Schumann Lizst or Brahms or even Rachmaninoff. You will be able to hear all the notes in the score !
I gave up the quiz after I couldn't identify even the first piece. I did recognize the three movements of Beethoven's Tempest, Rachmaninoff Prelude Op 32 No. 12, and Chopin's etudes Op. 10 No. 3 and 12. And this piano is amazing. 121 years old?
Guys: You missed Liszt/Schubert Winterreise-1, Klage - beautiful clips! And another Etude after op.10.12, then more from Chaconne, Etude 10.4 E major, Why did this piano frighten others - was it because Pleyel is so seldom heard in concert halls? I like its response to your touch. And I like your dress-code :) The bass is very responsive in Busoni's dramatic "orchestration" of The Chaconne. Thanks for sharing - you are such an inspiration! :)
A Pleyel Piano, there were greatly admired by Mozart. I agree this piano has a most beautiful sound. It is so even across the whole instrument. Of course it is so beautifully played also which does make a difference. Valentina would probably make a bad instrument so good. Thanks for this wonderful opportunity to hear a grand Pleyel even once.
+Tim Dawson thanks Tim, don't know what I was thinking of. did Mozart say about some maker that he made pianos because he wanted to serve music. something is floating around my head and I don't know what. my brain probably if I have one. Thanks for the correction. Perhaps you have an idea of what I might vaguely be thinking of.
I can play it well and I'm so glad. But I'm struggling for ages with pathetique mov 1... is it that hard? And I've played it so many times that there's no spontaniety just mechanic all over again.... is Pathetique mov 1 much harder than tempest mov 3? :(
Francisco Pinto no. If I may give you my opinion, just leave that beautiful pathetique for a while 'til you almost forget it. And when going back to it you fingers will remember all of it without the need of your memory/mind and then you will have the joy to play it with your soul only. I wonder if I explained myself well enough? I hope. Enjoy
I have already bought my ticket! Flying in to Paris that morning all the way from Kuala Lumpur to watch you as a birthday present for myself! I fell in love with you when I watched you play Liszt's Totentanz. I am really hoping for you to play it that night. Will you?
I wish I could try out this piano. It sounds absolutely nothing like the tired old Steinways you hear everywhere. I know this one is much newer than what Chopin played, but it definitely reminds me of what I heard from videos of the restored instrument. Of course, given this instrument's reputation for being not for the lighthearted, I probably wouldn't be able to make it sound nearly as good. And my god, through my headphones, the bass on this instrument sounds amazing.

my very humble opinion, is that the sound of concert pianos are for large audiences. Pianos with silvery sound like pleyel are closer to an intimate state of the tracks. Touched with hands as sensitive as yours is a journey to the time where they were written much of it ... I'm a fan of the sound that has the Pleyel Pianino so I am biased ;). Though this instruments lacks a wee bit of the "jewel-like" timbre of Ms Lisitsa's Imperial, it has another quality quite unlike the usual Steinway. Perhaps it's the acoustics of the room, or as was mentioned the "throw" of the sound farther out, but at times it almost sounds as if octaves and chords are "doubled." Perhaps the way it is tuned? As such, I found myself thinking that even the Rachmaninoff, in TONE sounded a BIT like Chopin. I would imagine the Schumann Fantasiestucke for Piano would sound gloriously immediate, due to the sage of this piano. Point of information: many pianos GET BETTER with age, especially Steinways, IF they are properly maintained. BTW, it's a WONDERFUL program (if the video reflects that), and I envy all who will have the opportunity to see this program and Ms Lisitsa live.

This is just pure unadulterated Liszt / Chopin propaganda. With some early noobs tossed in for good measure. (Oh Beethoven too!=) I love your stuff Valentina.
Pleyel et Cie was a French piano manufacturing firm founded by the composer Ignace Pleyel in 1807. In 1815, Pleyel's son Camille joined him as a business partner. - Wikipedia
Valentina, I am curious as to why you chose this piano. "Beast" doesn't help this tech to understand how a particular piano attracts you. Repetition/regulation looks and sounds good on this recording..also there are punchings on the tuning pins - reminders for...? Thank you Valentina.
I wish I could go to one of your recitals again! Hope you'll come back to Australia at some point :( I went to your Brisbane one last year (a great birthday present hehe), but unfortunately didn't get to meet you :(
Bach's partita no 2 d minor chaconne. originally for violin (: there's some edition's for left hand solo( more true to violin but 2 hand arrangement is fantastic).
Absolutely gorgeous piano! The instrument has a truly deep and rich sound. :-) This is surely a far upgrade over the piano you played on in your recital in Lowell, MA a couple of years ago. If you are interested in some really nice pianos, visit the Frederick Collection in Ashburnham. You can play instruments of this vintage and much older.
Los pianos Pleyel siempre han tenido un sonido excelente !!!!!! Tocar en un piano de esos... parece que estás tocando en otra época. Muy buenos para Chopin y Beethoven. Are a greats pianos!
Am I the only person who thinks this piano sounds a bit like a bösendorfer? I know they are all unique, but, their resonances are kind of similar, if you compare them to the old Steinways. It's interesting! Then we know a little more about what you prefer, Valentina ^_^
I am a guitar player and quickly recognized the Bach Chaconne. I was looking for a Chopin piece played by guitarist Tony McAline when I saw a UA-cam of you playing the same piece. I am now a fan! Saw your Abby Road Piece and will be ordering that for sure you looked like you were having so much fun! One question, you mentioned an older piano- 7 years and it had a dead sound board, some classical guitars take a while to open up, violins ? But do concert pianos get better with age or worse assuming they were built right and with choice woods? I ask because there is a 1957 Bosendorf grand that I can get at a good price! Thanks, James
Wow, I came across your recording of the Tempest sonata and was greatly moved by the beauty of the piano and how you so clearly were in partnership with it. I saw that it is a Pleyel, now sadly defunct. Now, I get to hear the story behind you playing it! It delights me how you came upon it after trying Steinways..... The modern piano has become too - as they say - in your face for my taste. Thanks for this! I have a friend near Toulouse who has a 1911 Gaveau upright and I encouraged him to have it restored. The structure and soundboard were still perfect and I am not sure that anything of comparable quality is available now given the lack of quality woods. It is finished and he is delighted, I cannot wait to visit and try it. We named the piano Gertrude, a suitable name for an Edwardian lady of impeccable quality, manners and taste! Do you know the age of this piano?
I am afraid so. There was an attempt to rescue it but it would have been a brand rather than a manufacturer. Google Pleyel and you will get the whole story, if you can stand it.
I'll give this one a shot 1. Bach/Busoni, Chaconne in D minor 2. Beethoven, Sonata No.17 in D minor "The Tempest" 1st movement 3. Beethoven, Sonata No.17 in D minor "The Tempest" 2nd movement 4. Beethoven, Sonata No.17 in D minor "The Tempest" 3rd movement 5. Chopin Nocture Op.15 No. 2 6. Rachmaninoff Prelude Op.32 No.12 G sharp minor 7. Chopin's Revolutionary Etude 8. Chopin Etude Op.25 No.2 9. Bach/Busoni, Chaconne in D minor (again) 10. Chopin Etude Op. 10 No. 3 and the year of the piano is: 122 years old. It is the Pleyel Concert 1892 2m68
oh my, id love to ace the quiz! but its hard, though i think you played tempest sonata, chopin's: revolutionary etude, nocturne in c minor, chanson ladieu and a piece i felt is rachmaninoff and 2 or 3 other pieces i dont know their names :P i know this isnt helpful haha

Amazing, I wish i can play like that, But i don't have teacher here in my country :( . I only use youtube to learn, but i am sure it's not enough. Something always missing in midi files, it just not as beautiful as your play .. But i'll try my best .
Thumbs up for Valentina for choosing and daring to play a stone-age Pleyel in concert :). Is it just me or do modern pianos, even Steinways sound dull compared to many older good-brand pianos? It seems most piano producers are converging to a Yamaha-ish "practice sound"... I don't like it :(
On the background , behind Pleyel, you can see a tail of Steinway , Hamburg D, an excellent piano on its own - but what a shock it was to move between that piano and Pleyel. Until now I thought of Pleyel pianos as feminine weak instruments suitable for some Chopin or Mendelsohn . I would never thought it can win by a big margin in Beethoven or Bach . Going to this piano after playing same pieces on Steinway produced effect akin to taking ear plugs out. Not only for me but for independent listeners present .
Valentina Lisitsa Just listened again, and some other UA-cam recordings of Pleyels. Damn they sound good and refreshing. Too bad I will not be attending your concert... Have fun, and please try to have some footage land here on UA-cam? :)
Dear valentine, I am very curious to know your comparison comments on Fazioli, Bluethner and Yamaha, the brand that you are not seen playing on. Would you care to comment?
I learned most of my piano craft on 1909 Bluhtner 7 foot with aliquote strings. perhaps it is nostalgic but nothing I play today ever compares to that instrument. Fazioli? I tried a few and I was impressed by them in a showroom. Once I got to play their instrument in a concert and I was suffering . Hard to judge from a single try - but I see nothing special in terms of sound from them, mechanically they are very good. Yamaha - i have 9 foot Yamaha I use to store the things on ;-) Their silent grand system is very very good for studies. I wish I had one in my Paris flat. But nothing beyond that :)
Valentina Lisitsa Yamaha is a piano in the second rank, but it has price going for it, or it did when I bought a C5 20 years ago. It has been excellent mechanically and holds tunes well. And my playing only justifies a "Toyota Corolla." Idea: Sell the Yamaha (is this the one with the burn mark?) and have a good cabinet maker build you nice shelving. You should come out thousands ahead. Auction it on eBay and buyers would pay a premium just because it's yours.
The sound of this piano is unique, the highs are flute alike, can't describe. Tks for sharing, Valentina.

Such tone, breathtaking.

Great Your piano sound will reach to my heart.
I am listening to your playing every day.
This woman is just gold
The way the Revolutionary Etude sounds on this piano is indescribable!
This piano is one generation younger than my Pleyel of 1870 and there is still a resemblance in sound!
I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!!

Thanks, I always enjoy your playful approach and excellent performances.
Qué maravilla...Lisitsa y su magia!!!
How lovely to hear Valentina play on a straight strung piano, rather than the modern cross-strung ones. The colours she produces are amazing!
Well, for you to pass up their Bosey for a 122 year old Playel. Hmmm. That certainly says something about the piano!
This is a very happy piano now on!!!!!
I love this Gaveau piano.. I had one. Mervellous sound.
Pleyel... excuse me... I love french pianos...
And Valentina is superb
I gave up the quiz after I couldn't identify even the first piece. I did recognize the three movements of Beethoven's Tempest, Rachmaninoff Prelude Op 32 No. 12, and Chopin's etudes Op. 10 No. 3 and 12.

Guys: You missed Liszt/Schubert Winterreise-1, Klage - beautiful clips! And another Etude after op.10.12, then more from Chaconne, Etude 10.4 E major,
Why did this piano frighten others - was it because Pleyel is so seldom heard in concert halls? I like its response to your touch. And I like your dress-code :)

Chopin had a pleyel piano.
Как ты прекрасно еграешь Валентина''даи бох тебе здоровие
I will work hard to achieve my goals, you're such an inspiration!
That sound must have been more inspiring for composers like Chopin than todays instruments.
Damn, I really loved Beethoven's Tempest Sonata iii. Allegretto at 4:05

Hope you'll come back to Australia at some point :( I went to your Brisbane one last year (a great birthday present hehe), but unfortunately didn't get to meet you :(
When do we get to hear the rest of the Chaconne? It's one of my favorites.
When are you will visit Florida? I would like to see you... I love your work... ;)
You missed me in December?
Valentina Lisitsa yes, where can I follow you, I would like to know all your activity.... thanks
what is the first piece she played. beautiful! i want to play it now.
Valentina, please! Come to Brazil again! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Am I the only person who thinks this piano sounds a bit like a bösendorfer? I know they are all unique, but, their resonances are kind of similar, if you compare them to the old Steinways. It's interesting! Then we know a little more about what you prefer, Valentina ^_^
Names for musical performances? They are all a unique being, whose fleeting life ends when the pianist completes the last note. :)
One hand for Chaccone beginning LOL...what a big hand !!!
Инструмент сам по себе не самый лучший. Чисто для домашнего пользования. Но зато съемка отличная и видно насколько Вы прекрасная пианистка.
984francis
No! Please say Pleyel is not gone.
I am afraid so. There was an attempt to rescue it but it would have been a brand rather than a manufacturer. Google Pleyel and you will get the whole story, if you can stand it.
Painful. Guess we're good with two main names now. Is Yahama still trying to make pianos? (No need to answer that ?). Thank you for your response.
I'll be there, count on me! :)
Lovely. What are you playing right at the start? I don't recognise it but want to play it!
It would appear that the piano has been choosed before the video began (did I say I was complaining? Keepo)
It would have been difficult giving this one back to the owners!
Are you going to play La Campanella at this concert? I really hope so...
I'll give this one a shot
1. Bach/Busoni, Chaconne in D minor
2. Beethoven, Sonata No.17 in D minor "The Tempest" 1st movement
3. Beethoven, Sonata No.17 in D minor "The Tempest" 2nd movement
4. Beethoven, Sonata No.17 in D minor "The Tempest" 3rd movement
5. Chopin Nocture Op.15 No. 2
6. Rachmaninoff Prelude Op.32 No.12 G sharp minor
7. Chopin's Revolutionary Etude
8. Chopin Etude Op.25 No.2
9. Bach/Busoni, Chaconne in D minor (again)
10. Chopin Etude Op. 10 No. 3
and the year of the piano is: 122 years old.
Bravooooo ❤
the beast has finally met his match...
Het is duidelijk dat Pleyel Erard en Gaveau fenomenale pianobouwers waren.

My favorite pianist valentine :)
Valentina +Polka dot skirt= perfection
Great Job👍🎹👍👏
Valentina Lisitsa
Just listened again, and some other UA-cam recordings of Pleyels. Damn they sound good and refreshing. Too bad I will not be attending your concert... Have fun, and please try to have some footage land here on UA-cam? :)
Why the Pleyel piano for the concert? Is it because of the softer intonation? A Steinway or a Bösendorfer are much harder in the Modulation.
How comfortable is to play the piano with boots?
Valentina Lisitsa
Yamaha is a piano in the second rank, but it has price going for it, or it did when I bought a C5 20 years ago. It has been excellent mechanically and holds tunes well. And my playing only justifies a "Toyota Corolla."
Idea: Sell the Yamaha (is this the one with the burn mark?) and have a good cabinet maker build you nice shelving. You should come out thousands ahead. Auction it on eBay and buyers would pay a premium just because it's yours.
