Liszt Mephisto Waltz No. 1 S.514 Valentina Lisitsa

- From Liszt's own program notes :
"There is a wedding feast in progress in the village inn, with music, dancing, carousing. Mephistopheles and Faust pass by, and Mephistopheles induces Faust to enter and take part in the festivities. Mephistopheles snatches the fiddle from the hands of a lethargic fiddler and draws from it indescribably seductive and intoxicating strains. The amorous Faust whirls about with a full-blooded village beauty in a wild dance; they waltz in mad abandon out of the room, into the open, away into the woods. The sounds of the fiddle grow softer and softer, and the nightingale warbles his love-laden song."
When I hear a new classical piece that I enjoy, I immediately look for her version of it. Her interpretations are out of this world. ALL the notes are crystal clear. Rhythm, breaks, emotions, storytelling like everything is just SPLENDID.
i agree she is one of my favorites. however, with this piece, if you haven't heard traums version (some concert pianist that does youtube VST's now), check it out. it's my favorite version by FAR. and he does it in a halloween mask 😅
@@gixelz too bad that popularity nowadays overshadows the quality...
Essientialy you really love this music
She definitely plays this piece masterfully
Valentina is a legend. She is Generous because she shares all recordings for free with the world. She is Technically one of the best, I would say actually the best where control of blurring effects such as strong left hand and pedal are concerned. She is Musically original and coherent (uniting different passages under one umbrella, like different expressions of the same face). She is Inspiring because she doesn't compete (where so many other pianists try so hard and as an audience you receive their effort more than anything).
But what I personally feel is her X-factor, in all of what she does, is her way of going beyond the notes, of soaring to heights of grasping what the composer intended, removing her own self from the equation. My feelings when listening to her music, as a result, go beyond gratitude. My feelings are of happiness and they help me forget our "condition humaine". It is like dreaming a beautiful dream. And you know what?! I don't pinch myself, as I don't want to risk waking myself up!
She is beyond perfect like an A.I playing the piano, all the communications of the notes including the forte, speed are played in perfect accuracy including her control of her pedal too. Shes like not human anymore huhu
Liszt : "Check out my new unplayable piece !"
Valentina : "Hold my vodka..."
Ice Teà check out Vladimir Horowitz's interpretation. It's quite amazing.
Bwahahaha! But that's assuming Valentina drinks vodka.
@@CatLegoDiver All Eastern Europeans drink vodka. In fact their babies prefer that to breast milk. What are you even talking about???
@@Meatwaggon
Scotty: When are you going to get off that milk diet, lad?
Chekov: This is vodka!
Scotty: Where I come from, that's soda pop. Now this is a drink for a man!
Chekov: Scotch?
Scotty: Aye.
Chekov: It was invented by a little old lady from Leningrad!
@@CatLegoDiver Hahahaha
I truly believe that Liszt had a Jekyll and Hyde personality, because both characters seem to come out of his music. He was ahead of his time.
Excellent performance.
To think that people used to write stuff like this off of the top of their head is amazing.
@;op 4 hes talking about people who can not just specifically liszt
;op 4 it’s originally composed for orchestra
Listz is one of the few people I’ll admit is a genius. His talent was scary.
@;op 4 but start on their head
@@dollyriva8297 he started actually wanting to be making these crazy difficult pieces after he saw Paganini play in france if I'm not wrong
This is the very best performance of the Mephisto Waltz No. 1. Valentina Lisitsa is just as amazing as Van Cliburn, whom I adore all the time. Give a toast to this beautiful and talented pianist. She is so fantastic.
Out of all Valentina's videos, this one just became one of my favourites
Tomasz Kasperczyk You should listen to totentanz!
@@jackylin6025 yes it will certainly shake you
I didn’t really understand this piece until I saw this video... once again Valentina produces a stunning rendition, and suddenly I feel a connection with the piece. She always knows exactly how to express the music in a beautiful yet comprehensive way.
You passion and talent continues to amaze. Had the good fortune to see you live twice -- what a blessing!
Everything in this performance is amazing. She's so accurate and intensely expressive. I love it!
Some of the most beautiful sounds ever to come out of a piano, produced by one of the most beautiful things ever to sit in front of one.
Undeniable! She's music incarnate, the best of the best, a living treasure and a wonderful soul on top of all that, what more can be said? Lisitsa is a goddess!!!
Omg Omg Val! This is one of my most favorite Lizst pieces of all time. My most favorite part of the piece is the beautiful passage at 6:23. I could replay that part over and over again.
I think it's a close call between Valentina and Khatia. Both are amazing.
Valentina has such a captivating personality that I'm always mesmerized by her playing
Великолепно! Мне так импонирует интерпретация классических произведений Валентины Лисицы.
Alas, later on Gretchen finds herself with child and sitting at her spinning wheel bemoaning her lost love as Dr. Faust leaves her to wander the world in search of all the knowledge there is. This was a fine interpretation of the festivities. The dramatic, skilled portions were wonderful and the lyrical sections absolutely filled with sensitivity appropriate to the emotion of the meeting between Faust and Gretchen . A remarkable interpretation of the occasion well composed by Liszt and certainly well played by Ms. Lisitsa. I think this very high on the list of her best performances. Thanks for the posting. She is remarkably well-skilled and sensitive. Well, she's just plain all-around remarkable.
without a doubt the most technical and emotionally advanced female artist on the face of our planet. an absolute joy and pleasure to hear and witness consistently. A fierce talent through a goddess of songs xxxx all my admiration and love
Mr. Sephaloid xx
Time to hide in the deep forest, the beast is awake...... Strange piece Val, :-)
Thank you for uploading! I've been looking forward to seeing her performance for a long long time. I love her to play Mephisto Waltz!
politcally, musically and visually spectacular
I love Lisitsa!!!! Wooohooo ❤️❤️
TO ME THIS IS OE OF THE BEST RENDITIONS OF THIS PIECE.VERY PROFOUND IN LISTS INTENTIONS AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE PIECE.
i LOVE THIS ENDING (and entire piece), FANTASTIC..... REALLY DONT HAVE WORDS for this interpretation.
Technically : perfect... (I'd say as usual :D) Sentimentally : magic, a marvellous emotional crescendo throughout the piece!! CONCLUSION : a masterpiece Valentina!!!
masterpiece isn't enought to describe this perfomance. :D
No doubt. I would absolutely call this fake if it was someone else.
you are amazing! I wanted so badly a performance of this piece played by you
and again, you are amazing Valentina, thanks a lot for this!
your interpretations simply blow life back into me. thank you so much for sharing your work, valentina.
It's marked Allegro vivace (quasi presto). So, although quite fast, the emphasis is on the liveliness rather than the speed. In my opinion, Valentina gets this exactly right. So many others start off presto with nothing left for the end.
I always thought the benchmark performance of this work was William Kapell, until now.Once again Valentina makes one feel as if they are hearing the music for the first time.
I've been waiting a long time for this moment :)
Astounding , as usual.
Demanding, as usual c:
Спасибо!
You are amazing again .Much more liszt please!!!
Thank you, Valentina for giving us this fiery piece !
Himmlische Interpretation ! Liebe Valentina , I love You . Thank You

I enjoy rewatching this amazing interpretation once in a while, because is the one I think it's best, thank you for lending the world your hands, heart and brilliant mind.
Brilliant performance. It seems Liszt wrote this piece especially for you Valentina.... and you looking beautiful....
P.S. ...thank you so much for posting !....
I can understand if she is the world's numero uno pianist. I am really amazed how her fingers can move that fast. Fan from Indonesia.
beautiful!!!!
so perfect!
i love you Valentina
Valentina, wonderful played as you use to do and I love the scenery
Amazing... Magnificent... I don’t know how to explain my feeling. What a graceful sound it is! The point is no one can dance with this piece. Maybe dancers would stop dancing and try to listen to this excellent sound.
Bravo, thank you for the fun!!
Amazing !!

This.. is.. so.. incredible.. undiscribeable.. so beautiful..
Just when I thought I had seen all and heard all, I suddenly have been taken by surprise how clean and how fast sections were played, when I thought only Ashkenazy could play them that fast. Now here is a truly gifted artist telling such a fun and gripping story through her pyrotechnique! I love this Valentina! I love your playing! You make my head swoon!
My favourite Liszt piece, excellent performance ^^
chaotic and beautiful at the same time
Liszt's piece is not hard, it's just the higher level of hardness
Masterpiece. Thank you so much.
Super!
Great dynamics and touch! I’d love to meet you in person one day!
Wow she is Really The Most Perfect Pianist I ever seen in my Life

You are amazing, perfect, beautiful!!! You are a goddess!!! I hate the people who dislike this...you are absolutely amazing!!!! Thank you for gifting us with this perfect recording, I finally found my new favorite recording!!!! GODDESS
Beautiful performance as always Valentina ! :')
End of the piece sounds very... Ahead of it's time... And very "romantic", (in the sentimental way) pretty emotional, exactly what Liszt wanted to portray ! Btw Great playing !
Perfect ...as usual . Thank you Val , to share
Awesome. Been waiting for this piece since like forever.
Great!!! Valentina (La Divina) I don't know how you do that, but everyday you look more and more Beautiful!!!
Nice playing!!!!!
It is the one of the music which I like about LIZST's.
It's my favorite song...
(I'm sorry about that I can't write English well.)
Love this piece!! Especially the middle-part, but everything is beautiful. I love the interpretation as well, really beautiful :)
Epic! Lisitsa started a Beethoven Sonatas cycle recently!
Majestic,beautiful and perfect!
I love this waltz!!! :O, thank you so much for sharing, amazing performance!!!!! Greetings from Mexico! :)
Liszt is the Paganini of the piano
Or M. Ravel, I know, Ravel didn't play the piano like a pianist. But his piano work are the hardest.
What a delight it is to listen to her.
Magnificiant performance 🌟
Everything about this video is fascinating. Starting from the cover, next is the dress (which makes me think in the direction of "The Corpse Bride" - perfect for the program of the piece).
The way the first theme is presented, with Mephistopheles playing the seductive tunes, until the very end, when the nightingale is singing with the couple in the distance. In the very end you could even imagine a cold night, the moon and you can see Mephistopheles' dark smile, closing the scene. Beautiful performance Valentina, thanks for letting us enjoy it.
I like you Valentina🙃
That was fantastic! Thank you.👏❤
Perfection
The devils in the details and sister you got the details and then some...and I love the dress, enchanting indeed....
Incredible Performance on of the best so far !
My daughter is a pianist, she admires so much and she is learning this piece, I hope one day we can go to your performance, we live in Virginia!!!
Wow! Maybe even Liszt would not do better! Bravo!
awesome
You are obviously a true Lisztian - stunning virtuosity plus great musicianship. Any plans for recording the "hard' version of the Transcendental Etudes? Even in today's age of super virtuosos, they remain under-recorded.
hard version? like the other unknow version of la campanella?
There are 3 versions of the transcendentals. An early version of Liszt's youth. The last version which Liszt modified to be played by mere mortals....and a middle version which Liszt made to be played by himself. So difficult that most virtuosos stay away from them. A few brave souls (Such as Leslie Howard who has recorded ALL of Liszt) have recorded all or some of that version; but it is poorly represented compared to the last version. Even great Lisztians such as Arrau or Bolet or Cziffra did not record them. They are not BETTER, than the last version, but different. Interesting. Certainly a challenge. I would love to hear Ms Lisitsa perform them.
Just finished learning this, and I can confidently say it is hands down the most challenging piece I have ever learnt. Even Scarbo from Gaspard De La Nuit and Etude Op 10 No 4 are comparable to early intermediate Chopin Nocturnes in the face of this.
I was waiting this for a long time! Beautiful! You're my favourite pianist :)
*sorry for my English*
I love how she makes every note be clear without playing roughly.Clearly one of the best pianists in the world.I don't think you'll reply but i want to ask: In what age did you start playing the piano?
EGEGEGEGEGEGEGEGEGEGE GEGEGEGEGEGEGEGEGEGEGE she was 3 according to Wikipedia

Must've been Chernobyl radiation. She's from Kiev and that's pretty close after all.

Beautiful , thanks for this 11 minutes of pure joy of listening 🙂
8:37 how the.. what the.. how do you even... I quit piano QnQ
even Valentina missed a few notes there, that's how you know this piece is hard :P
@Ling Ling but not even better than Alexander Lubyantsev (which is the cleanest for me)

@@MjrJohnsonn ive heard that one, yea its one hell of an interpretation
The twenty long right hand jumps of bars 764 to 783 are impossible to play live without mistakes. I wonder how Liszt played them!
Here there is the lyricsm and the very sense of this piece
wow!
you are amazing!!!
PERFECT!!! That's all!!!
this is wonderful!!!! by the way i like your dress, so beautiful on you. ❤❤❤
Amazing
Mesmerizing !
La mejor interpretación que he escuchado en mi vida. Brillante!!!!!!! ♪♫ ♥

thanks for posting this. Love it :)
The piano waltz... Powerful in deed🎵🎶🤩
TYVM Miss Lisitsa for explaining the piece, most people (Read snobs) tend to scowl at you when you ask them what a piece is about in my experience.
Haven't watched yet... requested this years ago... so excited... 11 minutes seems long compared to the 9.5 standard I'm used to, but Valentina is such an incredible pianist I'm confident this will be one of the top two performances on You Tube.
Wow.. very different.. I like it, will listen many more times and try to figure out what you did there. Very rare for a good Mephisto Waltz video to be uploaded online; thank you Valentina!
9 and half minutes? Kissin, Trifonov and Laplante all play it in eleven or twelve minutes. Not that the speed is the most important thing.
Yeah, agree, but Berezovsky generally has my favorite interpretation speed/dynamic wise, even if it's not quite as musical.
And That's it!!!
+ValentinaLisitsa you're perfect 😍 we hardly can find mentionable mistakes, this is too good.. OMG.. I think I've got an eargasm 😋
