    Very nice. One thing which i have to think of is the Vibration. To isolate the Loudspeaker and other, i use Sorbothane. I think by putting enough in between the Fan and its counterpart will isolate the vibration a little bit.

      Another good idea, I never thought that vibration could be a problem, I'm guessing vibrations will affect collimation

    I thoroughly enjoyed your video, Martin, like I do all of yours! You put a lot of dedication & thought into your films. Great presentational skills, too!
    My 11" Celestron RASA actually came with a built in cooling fan near the primamry mirror, but I won't use it much as my telescopes all live outside 365. Keep up the great work, Martin, can't wait 'til your next video!! Clear Skies m8

      Many thanks HollmanUFOLanding for watching. To be honest your RASA already has the cooling function, so you are already ahead of the game. Clear Skies!!

      @@MPAstro Yes but my other non 'Edge' Celestron SCTs don't, so I could use your mod for them.

    Just insulate it like everyone else does. A lot of effort for what?
    Insulating Cats is a simple premise. Consider this:
    When a closed system OTA such as a Mak or SCT cools, the metal tube cools much faster than the primary mirror and baffle tube inside the OTA. This results in a heat differential between the tube and the guts of the scope which generates a heat plume. Waiting for the guts of the scope to reach thermal equilibrium with the metal tube can take anything from an hour to all night depending on the size of the scope.
    Insulating the OTA stops the metal tube from cooling too fast. This way no heat differential is formed so no heat plume is generated. As there is no heat plume then there is no need to wait for the OTA to cool down so you can not only use the scope straight away but also rip high magnification straight away.
    Insulating an OTA does not stop the cooling process, it only retards it to the point where a heat plume is not generated.
    I have been insulating my SCTs and Maks for several years now and it has been fantastic as I will only have two or three hours at home to use a scope, and a 9" Mak will not have cooled in that time, but by insulating it I'm ripping 400X from it straight away (as seeing conditions allow).
    Those people who argue that insulating doesn't work either haven't tried it or have not properly wrapped their instruments so a heat plume is still visible. Insulating a scope does require some consideration - it isn't just a matter of "oh, I'll just use one layer of this stuff" & then whine about it not working. It does require thinking about the size of the scope, where you are setting up & heat differences between the outside to the temp the scope was stored at, plus the thermal properties of the wrap material.
    Many people use one, two or even three layers of Reflection. I have used yoga mats and now only Coreflute with my scopes and these have all been excellent performers for me.
    An added bonus of insulating an OTA is it also extends the dew-free period for the corrected plate. Depending on conditions & your scope the wrap & extended dewshield may be all the dew protection your scope needs. Also depending on the materiused for the dewshield you can install fans into it to provide totally heatless dew protection for your scope.
    Insulating an OTA is ONLY for scopes that are totally closed such as SCTs and Maks.

      If you not noticed on one of my videos I've flocked my Mak 180, which does insulates the main tube to similar an effect you described.

      But why you have do you have to disprove everyone's ideas, considering I've put alot of hard work into making these videos, all I wanted to do is to help people.

      Awesome, thank you Craig!! The cooling box design for the DSLR is bulky, but it will cool the camera quite alot and within budget. So when times are harsh and money is tight these videos are a must for many people!! Look forward to another DIY Project Craig, While some viewers like to disprove me at every angle, I still have another video idea once again for the Mak 180!!

      @@MPAstro yeah I’m not sure why some people spit their dummy.
      I’ve recently modded an old canon 500d but also read that the rear panel can be removed and the camera will still work. I control my dslr with a usb and APT so I’m going to see if I can adapt it to put a copper cold finger just behind the sensor.

    • @MPAstro

      Mate the whole idea is to share the knowledge and help others in the hobby. There is too many money making people who pull out patent threats and steal ideas of people to sell Astro products to make money for themselves. I have no interest in making money other than to enjoy making great videos. While benefit from the Astro community of useful tips and advice from good people like you who share the true passion and love for this hobby. There is too many greedy people out there willing to make a quick buck, while the real people in this hobby are struggling on what is going on this awful world we live.
      The cold finger mod is the one I did try out myself and are you so much braver than me, I didn't succeed at all and I've damaged my Canon 1100D in the process trying to strip it out.
      Once again I will never make a video knowing that the project is not going to work and I always scrap all my failed projects, Here in my channel I will never give out mis-information to my viewers, Always be honest and never lie to your viewers!!
      Good luck on your cooling mod Craig, it sounds pretty awesome, please let us know how you get on!! Clear Skies!!

    Some wishful thinking going on here, I'm afraid. Most of the turbulence is in our atmosphere, not the telescope tube. I think the cooling device is good anyway, to get the temperatures equalised, but that is not where the turbulence is.

    • @MPAstro
      @MPAstro  Рік тому

      Yep Brian, it is little bit of wishful thinking, I think I've mentioned in the video somewhere, I can't remember, that this device is not 100% guarnteed to work, as the Earth's turbulence is so unpredictable that even if the scope is fully cooled down, it's not going to work if the atmosphere is unsteady especially if there's a jet stream, no chance in hell!! However this device does speed up the cooling process almost half the time and will help the user in getting to use the telescope much quicker. I have seen a similar device based on the same principle and the prices will shock you, hence why I've made my own, Here is the link to this product Brian: www.firstlightoptics.com/misc/asterion-cooler-cat-for-sct-maksutov-telescopes.html

    • @Brian.001
      @Brian.001 Рік тому

      @@MPAstro It's a great little device, Martin, and I wouldn't dream of saying otherwise. As you say, it must speed up the cooling process significantly. Just regarding turbulence, though, I would expect a closed tube to show an uneven distribution of warm air - floating steadily up to the top of the tube - rather than a random turbulence as seen in our upper atmosphere.

    • @MPAstro
      @MPAstro  2 роки тому +1

      Also I wish add to that there are already a few manfacturers that build these, both are similar designs,
      www.rothervalleyoptics.co.uk/lymax-cosmicone-sct-cooler-r3-catadioptric-telescope-ventilator.html
      www.firstlightoptics.com/misc/asterion-cooler-cat-for-sct-maksutov-telescopes.html
      so why pull out patented pin remark!! My design is different to those designs plus it's way cheaper to build one yourself than buy one!!
      However if people don't have the tools or mechnical knowledge than these products will help them choose as well. On this platform Astronomy is for All.
