A perfect demonstration of the true nature of the legendary AK47: it rarely requires stripping or an armorer to fix a jam, not that it never jams. 99% of problems can be solved by just working the crap out of that bolt. Stef Literally. It is an old misconception, since at least the 1960s, that the Kalashnikov action is virtually incapable of failure. Karl and Ian had scores of people assuming the Kalashnikov here would fly through this test with no problems. It clearly has serious problems, but as Karl notes, it will continue to function in a manual fashion. This puts it miles ahead of most other military arms they have tested so far. but is far less than what many were claiming would be the case.
AKs are like that time in life where you think you've got it all figured out and that your parents and older people's advice was dumb. The AR is when you actually become an adult and realize they were right. - A former AK fanboy who grew up
For those who believe the problems arose because of the quality of the AK.. a man named Jim Fuller makes AK's that are so astounding that it'd make Kalashnikov himself shit his pants. They would function the same. Long story short, no matter what gun you have, don't let it fall into a puddle of mud, end of story. Take care of your weapon, and your weapon will take care of you. End of story.
Since the battle of Passchendale was so atrociously wet and muddy can you guys do a mud test to see which of the firearms used there would have fared the best ?
When I was in the army we were using AKM (folding stock) and after crawling in the sandy mud we were 90% sure it wouldnt chamber rounds properly - all it takes is few grains of sand in the chamber. I guess if we were allowed to crawl with round already chambered it would protect chamber better, but since we couldnt the two things we could do was to cycle the bolt few times to shake sand out of the chamber and it would work if the sand wasnt particularry sticky, or we could wash it in the puddle. BTW, the only way to properly clean the trigger mechanism was to run water thru it, you could spend whole day to clean it with rugs otherwise and the trigger would still by so crunchy it would make you cringe. Anyway, the one thing AK is good about is that everything could be covered in worst shit possible, as long as the chamber and bolt is clean it would fire reliably
This doesn't surprise me at all. If you pack enough crud into any machine it will stop working. The only way to pass this test is to have a rifle that is so sealed off stuff can't enter in the first place. I've seen some mud tests done with the AR15 in other videos and it did quit well. That's because it is a very closed action when it comes to ingress of crud. All this doesn't mean the AK is unreliable or the AR is reliable. what it means is the AK doesn't do well with the mud test. The AK still does a very good job with fouling. It still has large parts that are relatively few. It still eats a wide variety of ammo and doesn't require specialized lubricants, magazines, etc to run at full capacity. This is still an interesting test and I am keen to seen how other rifles fair. I would really like to see some of the old bolt guns get put through their paces. I'm particularly curious to see if the Berthier holds up considering it has an open bottom to let the enbloc magazines fall out.
***** I wouldn't trust that filthy 14 to much. They picked a very good brand of rifle with a gas system 2 inches longer than standard issue. It was used to train recruits and that suggests a very controlled range. They used the best lube they could find and used a lot of it. It actually has been cleaned and parts have broken and been replaced (several extractors for example). The language of the article is hyperbolic claiming it contaminates other things by proximity. Really? I think the author might be overstating things a bit. Oh, also it was cleaned. The author claims it was cleaned "once and only once" at 26,245. Then he goes on to say it was cleaned at 28,905 round point. He's a liar or is using some weasel terms. With that kind of writing I can't trust any of the other findings which is to bad. Unfortunately, I find a lot of this stuff when reading up on the AR15 series. I would much rather hear something like: "This rifle sucked when it was introduced and people died because of defects in the design, production and deployment. The military looked at this and fixed a lot of the immediate issues so it would function. After that it worked well enough but has proven hard to tweak without causing serious issues. As of now it's achieved a good level of performance and will continue to see use in military and civilian circles for years to come."
Actually I'm less interested in the rifle and more interested in the history. As I mentioned earlier I do believe they have improved greatly over the years but I would like to think our system could have produced a better weapon. The point about the changes in powder are true but since the rifle was produced by a system that used contractors the design should have accounted for that. The FN-FAL has an adjustable gas system to site but one example. Ditching direct gas impingement have having an adjustable gas system could have helped a lot. A bolt handle would have been a nice idea too.
MavHunter20XX I can see piston systems in AR causing issues. The rifle was built with direct impingement in mind. To me that just shows how deep the flaw in the design actually runs. Also it could indicate some shitty engineering on the part of designers. Both are neither here nor there as we've gone into the realm of near pure opinion. I've been discussing this issue with my much more knowledgeable brother and he pointed out some successful DI rifles. So the problem may be with the AR in particular. Though he felt the issue was more the combination of DI with the 5.56 mm cartridge. The Swedes had a DI rifle in 6.5 Swede that didn't have the same issues for example. Granted 6.5 Swede is a nice cartridge. The adjustable gas system would need a bit of training but that isn't much to ask. Especially if that bit of training offers a real improvement in performance which is yet to be determined with a purely hypothetical AR.
***** "Thicker the mud the harder it is to get into what really matters" that is bullshit, if i use a sandy mud like the M16 did, the AK would run fine, the AK is built to survive abit of mud but the shit they put into the AK would wreck an M16...
Ever notice how everything the Soviet Union made is like legendary until people actually test the stories. Almost like it's mostly all Propaganda or some shit.
That is in fact a Romanian AK, not a Russian or Yugoslavian AK like what Americans were encountering in Vietnam. Yes, there is a difference between them. The Romanian AK is to Soviet Block weapons what the M-16 is to American weapons, unreliable, poorly engineered, and just plain bad. The AK-47s in Vietnam were impossible to jam. Just ask the Vietnam veterans.
+lalilulelo1989 Especially when they own rifles that were previously dismissed as jam-o-matics yet proven to be pretty damn reliable when you're in a world of shit.
It might not have passed the test, but I find this the most "desirable" fail of all the mud tests; it still shoots, and it seems very simple to get the worst gunk out of it. All things considered, it did quite well. People are just jizzing themselves over the fabled AK not being so invincible after all.
I like how downvoted this video became. To be fair, my dad was trained in this rifle in the military and he mentioned that he was always told to clean off the excess gunk from the side, because it will jam otherwise. Just as it was shown here. Only some fanboys think this gun will fire more than one round in every situation imaginable.
+MR. SPUDERMAN This test was conducted in exactly the same way as the AR test. Besides, you can't just shake off all the grit that is *inside* the receiver, which is what's causing those malfunctions.
+Worldadventure Lehderp Maybe, but the point here is to determine suitability for combat in harsh conditions, not to see if you can clean a gun after it gets dirty.
Wow the AR did considerably better in the same test. After years of hearing how "the AK just runs no matter what"....and "the AR has to be constantly cleaned and maintained or it will have issues" ....Who would have thought?
Do you think the gritty texture of the mud is having more of an effect to why the blockages. Here in Europe our mud tends to have very little sand or grit in it and what there is tends to be very small and smoother. Could you to try the same test in top soil with a lot less sand and grit in it. Great videos as ever.
+Christopher Penta Not a bad idea would be willing to do so. I dont think i need to send the water ;) I would be good to see the deference that different types of mud composition can have on the live fire of the weapons tested. .
+SerenGetter But only in 1 type on soil composition. It would be great to see the same weapons put through the same test but in soils from other parts of the world.
+SonOfTheDawn515 We will not know until the test are done. Will different soil types interfere more or less the same or will some soil types be very bad for certain weapons. Should all soil types be avoided to the same degree. We all know that dirt will limit the effectiveness of the weapon but are some weapons better in certain soil types than others. Say for example that the AK was good to fire in peat based soils such as most of northern Europe but fails as above in heavy sand based soils. Some weapons may handle all soil types as badly or may be good with some bad with others. I would add to the catalogue of knowledge and understanding which can only be good.
You dont say. When military air craft or really any vehicle will have a different set up for different regions of the world. 1 key factor is the terrain make up and composition. Do you think the said "but all soils are the same or all soils are different". No they took an average across the area of operation for that type and model. If gun manufacturers dont do the same. A. why not? B. why not? C. does it really matter to me. No. D. would it be interesting to know. YES. Sorry if this seems harsh but holy fuck if you lot cant see the benefit of using different soil types as a more rounded test then anything else on InRange TV will be lost on you all.
so you used romanian, which is like cheap ak, instead of russian or more better variant to do this test. And how is ar would perform? I shouldn't even answer that question
+InRangeTV if you really going to make real test then test authentic ak and not cheap varient. we also don't know who built this one and what was quality of work

"And here's how the americans are checking the Kalashnikov's reliability. Look - first it's being thoroughly covered in clay and submersed in the mud. After that, they tried firing it. Much to the americans' surprise, it turned out that the rifle keeps working as normal. Russian weapon did not let down!" And then you see the original clip they ripped off you guys...
Hahaha, I love how people think that's all because of the authoritarian Putin regime... By the way, that TV show is from the private TV channel, widely known among the Russian speaking audience as a major nonsense producer (e.g. Egyptian pyramids built by aliens to communicate back with their homeland, Hitler losing in WW2 because the Holy Lance got stolen from him and similar mambo jambo). Next time please have your facts straight ;)

Some Weeb That's why China is becoming capitalist. Regulated capitalism works, it leads to economic growth and allows people to rise and fall based on individual merit. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than communism.
Well they are testing the shitty Romanian versions. These were built by companies who will cut corners for money. The real factory built AK-47's manufactured in the U.S.S.R and China are far more reliable.
The fanboyism in defense of the AK is unreal. People are acting like their cult leader has been proven a false prophet and are shutting out any contrary beliefs. It's just a video, guys...
The AK isn't branded by "indestructible", and besides, this was a more-than-average test. It doesn't have a dust cover, as it's bolt is basically a dust cover, but overall is cheap, easy to clean and operates within -20 to 50 degrees celsius. Unless you not throw it, but submerge into mud, quicksand or some kind of gooey puddle it'll run just fine.

+Oliver Karuna If AR was so damn proven bad ass reliable rifle ! Why its not the #1 selling rifle in the world? lmao i will tell you why because AK is far betterm more reliable much easier to maintain, it doesnt need cleaning ever week, just hose it down and use some motor oil to lube it and it will run forever! I don't think the AR will. Also both rifles and proven to have pros and cons! If you like AR go get AR , don't hate on AK like little bitch just because these guys tested some cheap ass romanian wasr and it failed to feed or eject!

I wonder how well the Owen SMG would go on this test. I have heard how it was considered one of the most reliable firearms during WWII with regards to being able to overcome mud issues, wonder if it really stands up to the hype?
The whole 'AK47 can be fired covered in mud' is people not understanding the rep of the AK. The AK's rep has always been that it needs virtually no maintenance or cleaning to work, and is super simple to operate. So you can give it to some untrained militia and they can use it just fine. Another genuinely interesting test would be to leave an AK and an AR on a shelf for 5 years then fire then and see which holds up, see if the AK lives up to its rep.
I come here once a month to laugh at AK fanboys. Notice I said "ak fanboys" and not the AK itself. It's a great rifle. Their fanboys however are the katana cringe lords of the gun community.
With that said, you were able to pour some water on the gun and it was working perfectly again. Isn't that proof that the AK is a very durable and easy to maintain in field conditions rifle?

AKs are like that time in life where you think you've got it all figured out and that your parents and older people's advice was dumb.
The AR is when you actually become an adult and realize they were right.
- A former AK fanboy who grew up
Tankies: 'AK cheapest rifle only costs $2 mass produced in Romania.'
Tankies now: 'NOOOOOO!!!!!! Not premium $2000 AK, test is fake propaganda!!!!'
The comment section is like cancer. All this misinformation about the AK is amazing.
This was a great test and perfectly realistic.
"AK's are the most reliab-" *malfunctions on the first shot*
That's why it's reliable.
It works when fine when a bit dirty and becomes a Mosin when very dirty.
I was making margaritas, and, I was out of salt, so, I came back here...
Excellent video. I love AKs but they are not jam-proof as some claim. This is a very tough test!
+Project Pete Yes, we agree - this test is extreme, to say the least. ~Karl
Wow, even with the dust cover closed. So much about the myth that the AK can't malfunction.
no it can theirs just a lot of room inside it for shit
+BigMek456 it was still shooting, manualy but it was working. AR wouldnt even get a round off.
Christopher Penta
much lie so solid argument very true
no one says the ak can't malfunction if they do they know nothing about guns. lol the point is the ak is more likely to work
Christopher Penta
Just seen that video too. Another myth busted.
His mechanic movements are very satisfying
Thank you for turning comments back on.
Now we can laugh at the AK fetishists in denial.
I would much rather hear something like:
"This rifle sucked when it was introduced and people died because of defects in the design, production and deployment.
I'm so happy to finally see the ak myth destroyed
People fighting over the AR and AK rifles! I'm over here loving BOTH rifles!
Hahaha the ak fanboys are hurt about this one
damn right lol.
look at the difference between the AR and the AK, the Ak has a thicker mud poured in.
***** the mud was thinner in that video.
watch how smooth the mud is in the other and look how gunky it is in this one.
Ukraine invasion made a lot of these stories come to light
These guys who test the reliability of AKs are something else, if I let my Mosin lay in the dirt for too long I start getting anxious lol
The sound of the receiver closing with the mud is like nails on chalkboard....
Finally. The AK 100% reliability and indestructability have been shown to be just a myth.

Myth busters of the range nice work brother
Everyone swears by the AK, but once there are issues, all of a sudden there are excuses. Sad, really.
+lalilulelo1989 Especially when they own rifles that were previously dismissed as jam-o-matics yet proven to be pretty damn reliable when you're in a world of shit.
Guess those "AK is self cleaning and can bathe in mud" apologists are eating dirt rn.
99% of people's rifles will never get this muddy but it's good to know how they work when they do.
It might not have passed the test, but I find this the most "desirable" fail of all the mud tests; it still shoots, and it seems very simple to get the worst gunk out of it. All things considered, it did quite well. People are just jizzing themselves over the fabled AK not being so invincible after all.
"How to make nice-looking bolt action rifle "
I like how downvoted this video became. To be fair, my dad was trained in this rifle in the military and he mentioned that he was always told to clean off the excess gunk from the side, because it will jam otherwise. Just as it was shown here. Only some fanboys think this gun will fire more than one round in every situation imaginable.
So metro did do it justice with the mud effect
Firearms Myth Busters InRange is teaching us that almost everything we were ever taught about firearms is false. Thank you for educating us.
Would have worked fine if you poured Fireclean into it.
*Crisco
+Dylan Feliciano exactly.
+MR. SPUDERMAN Yeah, real world mud never has rocks in it. That's why it's important to use properly calibrated TSA spec mud.
*Far Cry 2 in a nutshell*
AMAZING TEST! it really puts to rest a lot of misconceptions for me! and i can believe the backlash y’all got over a fair test.
These tests offer a controlled model.
Therefore every gun should be subject to these same conditions tested
"but it wasn't genuine Vietnamese mud"., (quote from another comment)
In Vietnam, we have to cover guns with plastic when swimming.
so you used romanian, which is like cheap ak, instead of russian or more better variant to do this test. And how is ar would perform? I shouldn't even answer that question
+maksim tsionskiy It wouldn't have made a difference but we knew we'd hear that claim even before we posted the video. ~Karl
+InRangeTV shure. bicycle and truck wouldn't have made a difference in any tests...
+InRangeTV if you really going to make real test then test authentic ak and not cheap varient. we also don't know who built this one and what was quality of work

Wow! I see that the AK is a very reliable bolt action rifle.
I so hope that Ian or Karl has a parts cleaning tank. Because they're going to need it.
Outstanding! It was the opposite of what I expected, especially for the M16/AR15!

"And here's how the americans are checking the Kalashnikov's reliability. Look - first it's being thoroughly covered in clay and submersed in the mud. After that, they tried firing it. Much to the americans' surprise, it turned out that the rifle keeps working as normal. Russian weapon did not let down!"
And then you see the original clip they ripped off you guys...
That is the most awesome thing I've seen all week. :D ~Ian
DaveTE15 Wow thats scary how authoritarian that is
Hahaha, I love how people think that's all because of the authoritarian Putin regime...
Please do not reply to the above Kremlin asslickers (who are hilariously automatically on the defensive) in any way or form - these guys might be getting paid for any attention and shitstorms they can generate on the web. Ignore and carry on. Thanks.

I liked AKs until I shot one compared to an AR-15. The AK is front heavy, unergonomic, not as modular as the AR and an overall antiquated rifle.
Daniel Bartleson You think a AR is good? bitch please, try an FNC, AUG, or even some more modern AK. (newer AKM, AK74, AK12)
That's something a communist would say.
Andy Freeman
Communism is just as good as capitalism.
Some Weeb That's why China is becoming capitalist. Regulated capitalism works, it leads to economic growth and allows people to rise and fall based on individual merit. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than communism.
Daniel Bartleson
Capitalism is better for the country, but for the people, it's just as good, or slightly better than communism.
And all this time the AK is hailed as the most reliable rifle ever made.. pfft.
Khiem Luong The K98k was even more reliable
AR does more damage because of the fragmenting 5.56mm
Well they are testing the shitty Romanian versions. These were built by companies who will cut corners for money. The real factory built AK-47's manufactured in the U.S.S.R and China are far more reliable.

As an AR guy, I took so much pleasure in seeing the "un-jammable gun" fail this much.
+semiautoriflelover1 Exactly!! People too easily jump into the stereotypes, it just shows they have no understanding of firearms.
The fanboyism in defense of the AK is unreal. People are acting like their cult leader has been proven a false prophet and are shutting out any contrary beliefs. It's just a video, guys...
Who is the great prophet of the AK? The fanboys will be looking for a new leader.

While watching this video, I was wondering how far down I'd have to scroll in the comments section before I saw people accusing them of using a poor-quality AK variant and that a *insert favorite pet brand/place of origin here* AK would have yielded far different results.
I didn't have to look far.
Weve got some old aks in polish army and they jammed pretty regularly, without any need to cover them with mud lol ;
Friendly reminder that the AR 15 and Scar 17 did better in this test. That is all.
The truth shall set you free... of mud in your rifle action.
Gonna need a source on that pal
LOL at all the upset AK fanboys haha

Thystaff Thywill except when they did the same thing to the ar lol
When I went to Iraq the salt dogs in my unit told me "their weapons work in sand storms, ours don't.". My beat to shit M16A4 seemed to work just fine. It's amazing how the reputations stick for so long to rifles.
7.9k AK fanboys dislike this video.
I personally had to dive into a stinking rice paddy, when a Charlie Victor pulled an AK 47 from that same sting rice paddy and still dripping fired a full mag at us. I believe in the Ak 47, never saw one fail.

This video proves that if an AK variant falls in the mud, you should spend a minute to wipe it down before firing it.
AK Operators Union 47-74 where are you guys at ? I'd love to see a response video
+Oliver Karuna I guess that they are celebretanig now. Happy new, sixty-seventh, year of AK. The most mass produced fighting tool, that still kickin.
+DevilMatt777 All the European AK variants are pretty cool.
they do testing similarly what Russians do in more realistic way.
DevilMatt777 Oh no shit cheap! you obviously don't know how the back market in Europe works! Because in Europe its not like usa that you can actually go and buy from the store! And Its very far from been cheap.
This man make that AK looks like a toy, what a giant
6:20
AR guys: the bolt won't even close up the ejection port when you're out of ammo, so the gun'll just get dirtier!
AK guys: _see, tovarisch, now AK has last-round bolt hold-open; is nyet bug is feature_
I think you should try multiple AKs like you did the AR for the sake of consistency
Obviously used fake mud
true soviet mud never jams kalashnikov
not like the worthless m16 right mate?
Incorrect.
Аминь, брат!)))
Obviously used a fake Chinese AK-47 Kalashnikov reliability is not esprima and is recognized around the world, let them experience dirt his M-16.
It's good to see Viktor Reznov reviewing the AK
Russian propaganda used this video to say how AK is reliable, lmaaooo
Also that the AK was cheap enough for you to just get a new one...
The test that was heard around the world!
I come here once a month to laugh at AK fanboys. Notice I said "ak fanboys" and not the AK itself. It's a great rifle. Their fanboys however are the katana cringe lords of the gun community.
Honestly, I'm surprised it worked as well as it did. Pretty impressive.
The AK can handle neglect, not flat out abuse. That's where the AR performs best.
With that said, you were able to pour some water on the gun and it was working perfectly again. Isn't that proof that the AK is a very durable and easy to maintain in field conditions rifle?
