The US government doesn't put a grade stamp on margarine. If you look at butter, it says USDA grade B, A, or AA. But margarine isn't actually a food. It's a manufactured product closer in chemistry to plastic than to butter. It has no place in my kitchen.

Fun fact: When first invented, margarine wasnt so bad. The original recipe was beef tallow and milk fats; it was meant to be a cheaper, more readily accessible butter alternative for lower class or poorer peoples.
WWI came around though and beef fat became less accessible. In the 30s, margarine was made with a byproduct of coal refinement (parrafin wax). This was phased out by WWII due to cost of processing to make edible.
Around the end of WWII is when we see vegetable oils and seed oils enter the mix; this wouldnt have been an issue, only the oils were hydrogenated and oxidized to the point they were incredibly unhealthy - loaded with trans fats and so much else.
Gradually as time has gone on, margarine has made a bit of a comeback - the product has lost the trans fats and actually been fortified with things like Omega-3s and other important oils/minerals/vitamins.
That being said: healthwise, it's still in a grey area. Butter is the healthier option, despite decades of campaigning to discredit this.
