The Lore of Carnivores

- Hey everyone. After my two Roblox lore videos gained some moderate attention, I thought I'd step things up a bit with the game Carnivores, which has a smaller fanbase but an equally as grand lore. I might make another Carnivores lore video if this one does well. In this video I mainly touch on the general and information-based lore, such as notable landmarks, the general plotline, etc...

Hey everyone! Thank you all for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video. This is my first time uploading a Carnivores video. It's not my usual type of upload but I'll probably make a few more. I really enjoyed the process of making this video, and I think Carnivores has some really great worldbuilding to work off of.
James, this reminded me of a game I played as a kid !! I would have been on apple devices back in 2014 or so, and I think it was a paid game? I remember it being a dinosaur game, but forgot whether you were a dinosaur or a human, but I remember all the dinosaurs were kind of creepy and black. There was a volcano you could go into. I loved this game and hope someone might recognize what I'm talking about !!
Such a fantastic video!
I remember playing this on my mom's phone as a kid, I had no idea this thing had lore!
Same, i used to download the mod version just to be able to play with different guns and dinosaurs 😁 super fun
If you played this on a phone as a kid, I think might still be a kid 😅
Same
played the LIVING FUCK OUT OF THIS GEM, on my ipad mini, had some good times hunting the yeti with my brother
@krulltheskull I'm In my 20s dude
Holy shit, you have reawakened a core memory in my childhood. I haven’t thought about this game in years, I didn’t even know the name but I remember playing it on my dad’s old PC. Man what a throwback, i need to check this out now that i have a name to look for.
Comments like these make my day bro, glad you enjoyed the video
I really like how they purposely used outdated depictions of dinosaurs as a basis for the aliens. It definitely gives the games their own feel to them. It makes the convergent evolution more believable because realistically these things wouldn’t look exactly like earth dinosaurs since they indipendantly evolved to fill a lot of the same niches utilizing similar body plans. Too bad the reboot just uses Jurassic Park designs and lacks the character of the original games.
It would be cool if you did make some videos covering the extended/mod lore and different fan theories. It would’ve been cool if the reboot were to canonize some of those as a way to expand the world, while still keeping it true to the spirit of the old games.
This was definitely interesting. Great video.
Thanks for the comment. I couldn't have put it better myself. The designs of the creatures in Carnivores are one of my favourite parts of the game. I don't think I've seen any other dinosaur media that intentionally uses inaccurate dinosaurs for artistic purposes without just being wilfully ignorant or anything. I think the old designs would have looked cool in the Reborn style and yeah I don't really like the Jurassic Park designs of that game. I'll definitely make some more videos talking about the extended lore of the mods. I think I'll start off with the Middle Islands mod which expands upon the lore of Carnivores Cityscape and gives an explanation as to why the dinos in that game looked way differently.
I can kind of see waht they were trying to do with the designs in the reboot. When the original Carnivores came out those old outdated 60s designs used were 30+ years old and now in the 2020s, those Jurassic Park 90s design are also becoming 30+ years old and are now also outdated. The 60s designs were better though, as they do feel more alien than the 90s designs.
Shit scared me as a child, especially the allosaurus
Very enjoyable video! I know I’d be down for some more Delphaeus Hills Ghoul content 👀
Thank you Saurian! Glad you enjoyed it. I might make a Delphaeus Hills Ghouls video following this, or perhaps one looking at the extended lore from the mods.
Same now I'm obsessed with the ghouls
@@KillionairBoss same
Maybe the Delphaeus hills ghoul is the creature that destroyed the archeological outpost in the island
Good to see you here, Saurian!
And yeah, this video is great!
"Aliens would have evolved completely different from life on Earth."
I appreciate you making the distinction, because you're right, they're neither dinosaurs or animals, but don't sweep it under the rug how intense the convergent evolution is between the two planets. Sure, in the real world, that's the point, but in-universe, the fact that these aliens with no relation to Earthlings whatsoever independently evolved to look like this is kind of amazing and worth attention.
Of course, plenty of sci-fi stories do stuff like this all the time, like Star Trek aliens just being humans but different colors or w/e, but it's still kind of amazing to think about what that means for xenobiology in the stories where it happens.
Real dinosaurs would probably look extremely different than the organisms of FMM-UV 32. But yeah the convergent evolution is still really evident. Especially with the plants in the game which are basically Earth plants as well as the mammals in Ice Age. Perhaps it's because of how similar the planet's conditions are to Earth's conditions; similar moon, similar size, temperature, etc... And convergent evolution like this doesn't even seem that farfetched considering what has happened with animals like the shark, dolphin, and icthyosaur. I think Carnivores manages to strike a really great balance between still being considered a dinosaur/prehistoric hunting series while also letting you remember you're on an alien planet in the future. Unfortunately the remakes really throw this out the window by going for generic maps and the almost Jurassic Park style creature designs. Thanks for the comment by the way, I like reading ones like this.
@@BackToBackJames Or maybe aliens visited Earth millions of years ago and took samples of the flora and fauna to deposit on other worlds.
Yes, in more recent years, scientists have come to the conclusion that real dinosaurs probably looked very different from the classic depictions of them, but that wasn't so much the case when the original games were made. So an argument could be made that these were the evolution of dinosaurs taken from Earth.
@@lurkerrekrulThat argument makes zero sense since in 90s was the time more accurate depictions of dinosaurs became more widely known thanks to Jurassic Park, the game uses a older style remarking more to the 70s by choice.
@@CoracaoAcidental98You have a really good point. The depiction of dinosaurs in Carnivores is still very different from what they were thought to have looked like in the 90s. Carnivores came out 5 years after Jurassic Park. The retro styled dinosaurs in the game are definitely a deliberate artistic choice.
The biological definition of an animal is a multicellular eukaryote with an internal digestive system. Any alien that is multicellular with a stomach is an animal.
This game was the first thing to make me realize how scary dinosaurs would actually be to encounter in real life even more so than Jurassic Park did believe it or not. I guess its just one of those things that videogames sometimes can get right more than a movie ever could because you really get immersed in a game like this (especially as a kid, as I and many other here were when playing for the first time)
I'd like to think that the Ancients look like Dale Russel's "Dinosauroid", given how the series has a running theme of purposely using outdated reconstruction of dinosaurs.
I think that's likely
Maybe it's that creepy pasta to the lizard man that was buff
Until we get down to Cityscape and HD.
I think they could be more like C.M. Kosemen's dinosauroids, but without feathers and more resembling of the game's raptors
I played this game a whole lot back then, this hits different.
I agree. Used to play it on mobile until I discovered it originated on PC.
Ah Carnivores...this brings back some nostalgia!
I remember I figured out how to hack the game and fly around. You had to shoot the T-Rex directly in the eye. I loved this game.
My buddy Jake loved this game when we were in middle school to highschool. He showed me a bunch of these cool mods whenever we hung out at his house and they're some of my favorite memories. If you see this Jake, keep it real homie.
Carnivores 2 was the first video game I remember playing, on my dad's pc probably around 99/2000. It absolutely blew my mind and it remains the most nostalgic game of all time for me
I haven't played in years and randomly remembered it when I woke up today, I love that there's such a dedicated community to this day ❤ stay safe out there hunters
This is one of the first mobile games I remember too.
CSR Racing, Road Warrior, and the Carnivores games.
Thanks for making this vid, just felt really depressed after a breakup and this was what I needed.
You've really unlocked an old childhood memory I have playing the game on my mom's phone lol.
This vid was made some years ago but I'd love a sequel video
Wow, you wouldn't believe how much this comment means to me. Thank you a lot. If you're interested I have a few other videos of this game on my channel similar to this one. And I'll definitely make more in the future.
I only recently remembered I used to play this when I was younger. It's a shame steam port isn't here but it's good to still see people breathing life to such a chill game. Coming home from work and you got nothing to do, you can just bing chilling play this game and slowly go through the whole series and all the amazing mods.
Devs: Ok so there is no story in this game...
Fans: *Fine I´ll do it myself.*
The story actually comes from the devs believe it or not.
@@BackToBackJames Where did you find it tho
The lore is explained in the game credits.
@@BackToBackJames It´s not lol
Yea it is
Tbh people weren’t big on cityscape but it was my favorite one, the maps were so cool and playing as a dinosaur was fun
Holy shit I thought I was the only one who remembered this game. I played the original and the ice age one on my family’s iPad as a kid when I was really into dinosaurs I every once in a while I look back fondly on it remembering when times were simpler. I had no idea there was any lore to these games and honestly it makes me have a whole new appreciation for it.
Awesome. Played the whole series cover to cover and was always captivated by the mysterious structures and disembodied voice of the temple in the first game - just those small atmospheric components did so much for a seemingly straight forward dinosaur hunting game. Thanks for the coverage and keeping the game alive in 22'!
I aporeciate it! Your comment perfectly sums up why I like the game so much!
UA-cam just randomly recommended me videos on this game, and its wild to hear "Oh yeah, these are just aliens that look like dinosaurs" as somebody who's never heard of this game before. Like what the actual fuck.
Loved the series. Wish the game saw more popularity and continued over the years.
One of my favorite mobile games. So much Nostalgia ngl
I loved this so so much as a kid
I was obsessed with this game as a kid and had so many theories about all the unique areas. I never thought I would find a video like this but I'm so glad I did. This is amazing.
I had this game for years. I love it.
amazing video man, as someone who plays this game religiously I can say this video is very well done
Thank you! It came out better than I expected
Wait...the Dinosaurs in this game are Aliens, and this game doesn't even take place on Earth? That...honestly explains a lot.
Great video! I grew up playing the mobile ports of Dino Hunter and Ice-Age. Its awesome to see that this series still has a following, and even a modding community!
i remember loving this game as a kid but i only played the lite version on mobile and just assumed it was a mobile game. awesome to see its a more expanded universe
Thanks for giving these games the love they deserve! I used to play the mobile version all the time, so happy to see it's still around and appreciated.
For sure dude. I'm glad these games still have an active and passionate community after so long
Dinos being aliens that just *look* like outdated depictions of dinos is a pretty 5D-chess play.
Waaaaay ahead of its time.
I played the hell out of “Carnivores 2” back in 2000. It was a Christmas present from my Mom in 1999. It had a lot of flaws with the game mechanics (mostly dinosaurs clipping through the scenery and bad dino AI), but it was a lot of fun for its day. The entire franchise was a really novel idea for the late-90s/early-2000s.
Wow. Core memory unlocked, thank you for this man.
Glad I could make you feel that way, thanks for the comment!
You're a hero, man. This is my nostalgia
I used to play this and the ice age version for hours as a teen
You just gave me a whole lot of memories my friend/ I subbed, keep this up.
Thanks a lot!
Hello! Long time fan of the games, This is a great lore summary!
Thanks!
Use to play this on my 4th gen iPod touch 🤣
Lmao that's what I started playing this on too, way back in like 2011
I did not know this games lore was this rich 😭 almost as crazy as Arks lore
This was my favorite game as a kid
Hey, I remembered playing this in 2012 to 2014. It was the time where we get our first Apple product which is the Ipad 2. I still remember the frutiger aero UI design and the metally scent of the Ipad, as well as the leathery smell of the white capdase casing. Thank you for unlocking my memory when I was younger back then.
I remember playing apache helicopter Sim, Barry Steakfries monster run, Sudoku by Zynga, talking games. And all the good stuff in the appstore of the early 2010's. Once again thank you for the video❤❤
7:45 Damn! I thought I was a genius for discovering that one when I was 13
I still play these games, they have different maps and plant diversity.
There must be a story behind this, but it has never been told.
It would be nice to hear fan theories.
Thank you for making this video, this wonderful series should not be forgotten! :)
Very nice Video there! Keep Content Coming .)
It's an honour to hunt for you
Yooo I forgot about this game, I used to play it on my brother's Ipad while we were waiting to get picked up from school 😭😭😭
Lmao I used to play it on my brother's iPod touch. Those were good times
all the unplayed AAA games i have and im about to download this one.
Ah Carnivores.... Good times!
I'm really hoping we get a super good dino hunting game some day.
The sentient species is probably a restive of the yeti
Maybe, but even though the Yeti is humanoid it appears to be very unintelligent.
Holy crap! There’s lore to this game! Count me interested
I’m glad this game series has an active modding scene to expand on this lore,it’s REALLY cool.
Same
This game is my childhood
Same!
I played the first game way back when I got my first Intel system, which was a Pentium 233Mhz with a Voodoo 1 card. I tried installing it on a later system, but never got it to work properly. I did play Carnivores 2 on that system though. I have copies of Ice Age and Cityscape, but I've never gotten around to playing them. I wasn't all that interested in Ice age to be honest, but a local store had it cheap and I'd read that you could swap the files between the games to have dinosaurs in the snow, or mammoths in the tropical maps.
On Carnivores 2, I managed to get out of the trophy room, by running and jumping in one of the corners. It can take a while, but when you get up on top, it's just a vast, flat plain with a repeating texture. I think I also managed to get on top of the block in the center of the trophy room as well.
If they sell the game for a good company and make new undateds and make it as multiplayer game its will be a huge thing
Oh that’s the lore I always thought you play as some rich guy who hunts dinosaurs, but this makes more sense
no wayyyyy i've not heard this since i was a child bro, it has lore?! epic video bro
Yup it has lore. Thanks for the support!
amazing video
Thanks!
Fun Fact:In Carnivores: Cityscape, Dinohunt Corp actually attempts to use Historically accurate dinosaurs by using time travel, this was a side plot for Carnivores: Cityscape, that's why there some goofy ah ah looking animals there,
Those are actual dinosaurs.
Dude, I’ve had very blurry deja-vu type memories of playing this game as a little kid, but I’ve never known the name, or if it was something I just imagined. I can’t believe this was a real game, holy shit.
Very enjoyable video
Thanks!
such a good game
I remember playing the first game as a kid. I literally shat my pants when I was out in the water and the T-Rex started swimming towards me. I was always told that T-Rexes can't swim because of their tiny arms. So little me was terrified when that thing started coming after me out into the ocean.
I enjoyed this vid!
Thanks!
Thank you for making this video! Carnivores hands down is one of the greatest games!
You're right about that!
@@BackToBackJames In your opinion out of the original 3 Carnivore Games (the first two were dinosaur focused, I think the 3rd was the ice age one), which do you think was the best?
@@TrueTributes13 I personally like the second game the best.
@@BackToBackJames solid choice!
My childhood from home to home I was able to keep this game and played it all the time truly one of my core memories.
Very interesting, I never know that this game actually took place on an alien planet with "Dinosaur-Like" Aliens and the lore itself is really intreating, hell it's a great setting for a RPG.
Brilliant
Wow thats something i didn't know i had forgotten
When you put pictures of dinosaurs from Zdeněk Burian you reminded me that I have his book that I should read now :D as a Czech it warms my heart
He's an amazing artist
same here. :D ahoj!
Liked and subscribed
Thanks
this game is my real childhood i remember playing this game with my cousins it SO FUN WHEN I WAS LITTLE this game is the real nostalogia yet its lore is scary
Dayum bro you brought shit out of the back of my mind man.
You deserve more subscribers
Thanks!
First pc game i ever played. I just got a computer and seen this game at walmart, i was 8 and knew nothing about pc specs lol.....but it worked and i played the heck out of it.
There is of course the question of *why* this alien planet for some reason has lifeforms that resemble what we used to think dinosaurs looked like...
But eh, screw it, it's cool that's why.
there's lore?
Yep
Yo I remember playing this game along time ago and my elementary friends also used to play this, the mobile port is probably the infamous one. Back then i always think there was some sort of lore, because we hunt dinosaurs with modern tech
Me and my older brother would play this game a long time ago and even to this day we sometimes make the wooly rhinos death sound to eachother lol
I've never heard of this game but hunting alien dinosaur things sounds crazy
I still play this, I practically jumped on this video when I saw it XD never see anybody talk abt it
I remember one of the first times I played this game I got assassinated by a utahraptor from behind. There was no warning, just death
Bro I’ve been playing carnivores pro for over 8 years and I never knew any of this 😂
Nice
10:21
Predator :
Well my lore is simple. Once I tried flesh and everything since I then began to hunt prey and- oh wait Carnivores is a dinosaur themed game.
I've played this game years ago and thought nothing more of this as just a hunting game. I didn't know it had any lore
My god you just made me remember this game's name and how much I LOVED playing it on my parents phone back in the days.
I sometimes thought about it but didn't remember the name.
Now I do so I think I'm going to play a bit!
And there is LORE!? That is cool. I never knew! Istill wonder what's the lore behind those Xenomorph eggs 6:45 tho. I remember finding them being kinda creeped out.
The in-game description hints at those being dinosaur eggs
@@BackToBackJames That makes sense
💯🔥
HOLY SHIT I HAVENT SEEN THIS GAME SINCE I WAS A KID I FORGOT THE NAME AND JUST SAW THE TITLE AND HAD A WAVE OF NOSTALGIA
Liked and subbed
Thank you!
This was one of if no THE first video game I ever played
I never knew those dinosaurs were aliens when I was a kid playing this game I thought I was actually shooting dinos
Mine blown

That’s definitely a horn coral
Headcanon, the game turok is a prequel
Man! I would play the first two with my friend waaaaay back and we'd chant fresh meeaaaat when the raptors were chasing whoever was playing 🤣
The exciting thing about the game is it recently got an update (on mobile anyways)
I remember playing the mobile version as a kid.
That's what I started on
Same
I remember finding the old ruins and wondering why it was in the game
DUDE I LOVED THIS FUCKING GAME
Oh my god I remember playing the carnivores dinosaur hunter game on my iPod touch when I was like 10. Anything remotely stronger than a parasaurolophus scared the shit out of me lol.
