    The Alesis Strata Prime is the most impressive e-kit release so far in 2024, with dual-zone mesh drum heads, a patented anti-trigger hotspot system, 360-degree cymbals, a 10.1" touch screen drum module with the BFD engine, over 40GB of sound content pre-loaded, and a revolutionary new trigger engine.
    I failed to mention that the kit doesn't ship with a drum throne, kick pedal, or hi-hat stand.

    You touched on it briefly but for me it’s the biggest thing you said. As an accoustic drummer myself like you, hearing that you played for 4 hrs on it and didn’t tire of it is huge. Cause aside from all the amazing tech in that box, we all know that the fun of e kits quickly evaporates. I need an e kit that will inspire me to practice at home. That feels as close a proximation to my live acoustic kit.
    I am very tempted with this kit.

      This is why I couldn’t get into the roland 27kv2. Yes it’s technically the better drumset but man it felt so lifeless when I tried it out. It felt great but visually and mentally I just couldn’t really dig it. I tried out this kit at a guitar center and it’s just crazy fun.

    I think your review has sealed the deal for me. I really do not like the fact that Alesis couldn't switch to full size shells (like competition from EFNote), but the module and full-size kit alone are worth the price of admission.

    Definitely one of the best reviews out there right now. Struggling to decide whether or not to replace an awesome pearl master series acoustic set. Great kit indeed, I am very impressed, But just to point out. Top, bottom, overhead and room mic channel adjustment has been implemented before. The Mimic pro (and Gewa G9) does this and that came out in 2017.

      G9 only had room channel, not full multi channel and limited to 4GB total module, only 2gb for imports from store, cannot exceed this memory which is way much shorter then mimic and stratus prime module.

    Great review! I had the Strike Pro SE and got rid of it because the hi-hat was driving me crazy. How's the hi-hat on this kit? Does it register sensitivity well? Does it randomly spin like the Strike Pro SE?

    • @bmbell71
      @bmbell71 2 місяці тому +2

      From my limited time with it, it does not have any of the triggering issues that the Strike Pro or the SE had from what I can tell. However my biggest beef with the hi-hat is the tactile feel. It's very floppy even when closed. If you've ever played Rolands VH-14 hats you'll know what I mean, but even their lower end v-hats are more stable than this. But don't get me wrong, they are a huge improvements over the Strike Pro hats.

    Great overview, thanks. Do you know if it's possible to import your own samples? I know there's a ton of storage but I can't tell if that's only for purchased expansions. The ability to bring in user samples with velocity switching /crossfading would make this kit irresistible. Also how easy would it be to replace that absurd 20" bass drum with a trigger pedal? I have no idea why drummers want manufacturers to give them extra stuff to carry around with these e-kits!

    • @NickCesarzDrums
      @NickCesarzDrums  2 місяці тому

      I spent this morning uploading my own snare sample to the module and it's a bit tricky. You can have multiple velocity layers with crossfading, but it does take a bit to get it sounding natural. You can have a max of three four on the snare batter and three on the snare rim, so there is a limitation there. I hope there is an update to the sample engine in the future that makes importing sounds much easier with round robin. But as it stands, importing one shots is probably the easiest way to go and blend them with the original kit sounds.
      For using kick trigger pedals, I think they will work fine. I don't have any laying around, but I made this quick video demonstrating other kick pads working with the Strata Prime: ua-cam.com/users/shortswPft3VHvoYA

    • @jimharp8655
      @jimharp8655 2 місяці тому

      @@NickCesarzDrums Thanks very much for demonstrating those kick triggers. I can see the value of a real appearing bass drum for live shows, but I would mostly be working in a jam packed studio, and when I do play out I want to carry as little as possible. I hope Alesis will eventually make it possible to buy the module and individual kit components separately.

  • @johnburkhalter3880

    I'm sort of glad they didn't follow the acoustic drum look trend. It makes for easier transporting. The module is just brilliant. Consider the closest competition for this module is the pearl mimic which sells for a out $2500, and you get this module with a full set of pads and hardware for about $1k more. Outstanding value.

    • @NickCesarzDrums
      @NickCesarzDrums  2 місяці тому

      Agreed 100%. It seems like every kit maker wants to make electronic drums look exactly like acoustic drums, but I don't see the point always. Remember how wild-looking Simmons drums used to be?! But there's a place for acoustic-looking e-kits, no doubt.

So please tell me, for a hard Metal drummer, will this make a good practice kit?? Because I would like to get 1. But l need an honest opinion of if it's worth the investment?? An is it future proof?? Awesome kit! Phenomenal module with excellent customization potential. Hope it will be compatible with previous kits.
    It's a shame they used pads over deeper shells. Also not a big fan of touchscreen over actual buttons, knobs, and faders on the module. I have the Strike Pro SE and honestly feel like it's better for my use case.

      as far as SD3 goes, you’d need to have it connected with a laptop via USB. You could import some one shot samples to the module, but it won’t be as realistic

    • @photographerjonathan
      @photographerjonathan 2 місяці тому

      @@NickCesarzDrums that is not cross sticking. that is just a cross sticking sound in the rim. the Rolland digital snare will play just like an acoustic snare. if you flat stick it and hit the snare head and rim at the same time it will sound like it is supposed to sound. and if you side stick it you don't need to have the back of the sick on the rim. what you are doing is just triggering a sound in the rim. its not actual cross sticking.

      You can have up to four crash cymbals and one ride. And there's an additional input on the back to add an Aux drum, so that would work in your case. I'm not aware of Alesis selling smaller cymbals that go with the Strata, but you could buy something like this 9" Lemon splash cymbal and it most likely would work (I haven't tested this so YMMV, but they're regarded as one of the best third-party e-cymbal makers): amzn.to/3Vix6yb

    For a good percent of the reasons I got out of acoustic drums, now I observe e-drums, crossing away from their compact advantage, and moving toward the large footprints of acoustic drums, and introducing the limitations of acoustic setup into e-drum kits.
    Personally, I don’t view these massive, “look like Acoustic” as a good idea.
    If you want acoustic mass with electronic capability, why not just purchase mesh heads, external drum triggers, and the module of your choice and keep your existing acoustic kit?

      It honestly depends on what you are looking for. Better sounds right out of the box, def Alesis. Flawless latency and stable durability, go with Roland or even EFNOTE. TD-27 had the digital hats, snare and ride which until you play them, I can't describe how they feel. I know the Pro SE has durability issues over time, maybe this one is better made. We will find out in about a year when folks check in about the Strata Prime. I wouldn't feel good spending the price point when I could get a TD-27kv2 at the same price. I would consider this kit if it was $2k.

    • @NickCesarzDrums
      @NickCesarzDrums  2 місяці тому +1

      Hey, depends on a few things.
      1) The hi-hat performance on high-end Roland kits is far better IMO.
      2) If you want realistic looking shells, get the VAD.
      3) The TD-50x module doesn’t have Bluetooth, so you need a receiver to stream songs from your phone or tablet to play along with.
      4) The sounds on the Strata Prime are better than the TD-50X to my ears, but somewhat a non issue if you use VSTs.
      5) The feel of the digital snare is a lot better on the VAD. The digital ride is good as well, but the Strata ride feels really good as well.
      For me, I’d either wait until Roland releases a new module, or snag the VAD since it’s already discounted, it’s likely to hold that value for a while still. And you may be able to sell those later on at a similar price to get a new kit. Hope that helps!

    • @Zursen
      @Zursen 2 місяці тому

      @@NickCesarzDrums Very nice of you to respond Nick, thanks! I would love to hold off for a new Roland model but it would seem that could be this year, or in 2 years! So hard to tell and I have that itch. With the discount hopefully it holds value as you say and I can sell it for an upgrade, if the upgrade is even worth it. I guess the biggest drawback is the lack of a sexy touch screen UI that we're all familiar with in this day and age.
      What do you mean about the 'receiver' to stream songs? I'm new to e-drums so no idea what reciever is needed! I thought I just plug the phone into the module with a cable :D
      With your TD50X did you try adjust the module sounds to get them to your liking or did you just go straight for the VST software?
      Sorry for such a long winded reply but it's just hard without being able to test the kits out personaly. I don't see any VAD/Roland vs Strata Prime reviews out yet and it would be nice to see considering you've had the chance to play both.

    • @NickCesarzDrums
      @NickCesarzDrums  2 місяці тому +2

      I own the TD-50 module, so it's not the newest model, but I have tested the TD-50X at conventions. I've messed with the internal sounds, changing mix levels, adding EQ, compression, etc... but they don't do it for me. To me, it really wasn't a substantial upgrade from the original. They're almost the same, but you get some more sounds. In a pinch, when I don't wanna hook up a laptop, they're okay.
      For streaming songs, I mean if you wanna connect your phone wirelessly. But with the correct cable you can do exactly that, just plug it into the MIX IN and you're good to go. There's a volume knob right on the front to adjust the volume from your phone.

    • @Zursen
      @Zursen 2 місяці тому

      @@NickCesarzDrums My man Nick! Thanks a lot. I thought the TD-50 could be upgraded to the TD-50X for free anyway with some software update? I might be wrong on that one!
      You can buy some kits online for the TD27/TD50 that have been edited to sound better. Wonder if you tried any? I don't even own a laptop, just a desktop PC which is in the same room, but if I wanted to change kits I would have to stand up and walk over to the PC to change to a different kit. But I doubt I'll be changing the kits loads, I'll find one I like and practice / jam with it.
      It is a bit concerning when people complain about the Roland stock kits so much. That alone makes me wanna go with the Alesis, but hihat/snare articulation is very important to me so kinda ruins that one!
      My final question if you don't mind me being a pain. Who wins in the 1v1 battle of BFD3 sounds on the Alesis vs Superior Drummer or whatever VST's you use. As in if you could get BFD3 sounds from Alesis onto your Roland, would you, or are you happy with Superior Drummer/VST's?

    Great review. Your video was part of the few I saw that encouraged me to buy the nitro max, so thank you for that.
    This thing is gorgeous and I definitely want to play it, but as a casual drummer, there’s something to the nitro max that’s nice because if it’s simplicity. I can just turn it on in between work calls (🤫)and bang out a couple songs when I hit the Bluetooth.
    This one seems like it’s meant for a serious drummer, one that would use it to play shows. The customization is insane and it just feels like a large kit that wouldn’t be able to be stowed quickly & easily if I needed the space. The build quality and features make the price point seem reasonable, but an investment like this also makes me fearful of damaging it. At least with the nitro max, if I had to buy a new part (like how I had to buy a regular snare stand), it’s not gonna break the bank since the whole thing is a 1/9th of the price of this guy.

      comparing “the best” Alesis kit to a flagship kit from the A brands… Hahaha…. You must be on steroids. This kit doesn’t offer more (in fact less) than one of the lowest priced Efnote kits. An Efnote 3X is way cheaper than this kit, and Efnote kits have a reputation of coming with outstanding support whereas Alesis has a reputation of coming without any support at all. No comparison, my friend.

      @drummeranimal I'm not sure what's so confusing... Alesis is calling the Strata Prime their official "Flagship" kit. My point is that if you take all of the kits that have been ID'd as the manufacturers Flagship kit, you're gonna find that buck for buck this kit is the better deal!

      @@joemanzotherealjoebizz Well… That is just your opinion. I beg to differ. This kit is far far far behind true flagship kits. 6 outputs, of which only 4 assignable, no sound over usb, pancake pads… Flagship for you, maybe. And of course, when Alesis says so it must be true… 🤣

      @drummeranimal honestly, Alesis is calling it the new flagship kit. I'm just keeping it real. I will confess that there's a certain UA-camr who has a successful drum show who is blatantly bias towards Roland. Most of his opinions are decent until someone uses the "R" word.

      @@joemanzotherealjoebizz I have enjoyed a Crimson 2se with a Strike Pro module for many years. The Strike Pro is an excellent module in its class and probably the Strike Pro kit was the best available at its price point until a few years ago when Efnote launched its 1st kit with their optical hats (the 3X). They raised the bar and made Roland sounds a joke for every edrummer. Many Roland users know this and I guess at least half of the Roland camp uses vsts to get something decent out of their kit. The 50X is at best comparable to an edrumin with usb pad support. So I concur with a negative attitude towards Roland ‘modules’. Back to the topic, the Alesis Strata really lacks too many features which a true top of the line module should have and the looks of the kit resembles a Crimson kit of which the kick had too much fertilizer. It is just so off. The sounds may be good, possibly even great, but a few $$$ for BFD would bring a Strike Pro to the same level. I understood the Strata hats are pretty good. I’ll try them when I get the chance and that might change my opinion. Until then, I’d rather return to my former Crimson/Strike setup and add EZD and have a (few) super party/parties with my friends for the remaining money.

Really though that's gonna come down to how the sounds and performance sta k up against the digital drums which so far I havent seen anyone even acknowledge, much less address...... strangely so in fact. Did Alexis ake you agree not to bring this up in exchange for early access? I ca t even find an answer to if the snare is rimshot and cross stick capable which seems like THE most basic of questions at this price point.

    • @NickCesarzDrums
      @NickCesarzDrums  2 місяці тому +1

      I'm trying to get better at making videos, and I'm embarrassed that I forgot something as simple as cross sticking. I also needed to spend a lot more time talking about the hi-hat as well, but failed to. I still have the kit before I send it back, and will try to make another video addressing these questions. But there was no such agreement like that.
      But cross-sticking is completely possible, but the Strata Prime doesn't have that magic hand-sensing tech that the PD140DS has. Just need to keep the butt of the stick on the rim while you play them. I made a quick short video demonstrating here: ua-cam.com/users/shortsY6xhGOngJ8s
      Hope that is of help!

      @@NickCesarzDrumsIt would be great if you made a follow up video. Don't be embarrassed though. I watched about 7 videos on this on this drum set, some by some bigger named youtubers and none of them addressed it. I finally found one video (by Alesis themselves) which sort of indirectly implies that yes you can get cross stick and rim shot sounds, but don't say exactly how. I believe it's from using the 3 zones on the snare, and each zone being a different sound rather than true cross stick/rim shot, but they didn't really fully explain, so I'm not 100% on that. It's the fact that literally everyone skipped over it that made me ask if Alesis forced you into some kind of agreement. It's normal for any one reviewer (such as yourself) not to mention it, it's weird when literally everyone doesn't mention it. Keep up the good work!

    This may be the best e-kit of 2024 thus far, but I think there are still better ones out there. The module is the best part of the kit. For a pad kit, it is heavy, clunky, and as big as an accustic set. I think they should have done shells like the Strike Pro Se. The wrap on the bass is cool but does not look great on the pads. The wobble of the hi-hat when in the closed position is annoying, and a 2 piece hi-hat is more realistic and more fun to play even if the bottom hat is just a decorative plate. There is some crosstalk that takes a bit of tweeking in the module. The fact that all the cymbals are 360° triggering and 3 zones is plus. The Strike Pro Se came with 3 crash cymbals, and this set only has 2 is a disappointment as they should have included at least a 3rd splash cymbal. The overall sounds are decent. Some of the recorded sounds are great while others are lacking. The cymbal bell zone is super sensitive, but I wish the bell zone was bigger on all the cymbals, not just the ride. Positional sencing would have been a plus as well as more sensitivity to the pads playability. The kit overall is a hell of a lot of fun to play. The module is great as it is basically a touch screen computer with tons of tweeking options. Alesis has definitely uped their game with this set, but I still think there is room for further improvements. One thing I would say as regards to Alesis is that they definitely stepped into the realm of professional e-kits with this one. I think this kit, as well as the Strike Pro Se, are worth considering, but I would not recommend much else from Alesis unless you are new to drumming and looking for an inexpensive first e-kit to learn on. I am definitely looking forward to seeing what improvements Alesis will make and what kits they will come out with next. Some reviews have said that this kit fixes the problems some have had with the Strike Pro Se. I would wait to see what people say about this kit after they have been playing it 6 months to a year and have discovered all the problems/issues with the kit, then I would buy the next kit or even the one after that since those kits would even be better. So, for now, I do not recommend this kit, but with module upgrades and fixes in the future this kit may be as solid as Roland, Efnote, or ATV.

    I had a chance to play one they just brought in at GC. I didn't get to spend much time, but I have to say I am sersiously impressed and that says alot considering my prior experience with Alesis was shall we sall, less than exceptional. If I didn't have money tied up in some home renovations, I would go buy one today. That's not to say there aren't problems. The feel of the hi-hat is not great especially compared to Roland or even Yamaha. There's some cross talk issues, and the rack is just OK. I wish they had made the drum pads a little deeper but the overall look is incredible. Since they are using a wrap it would be nice to give a couple color options, but those are small nit picks. The biggest negative is the sluggish performance and this is where someone using this for live performance where they have to switch quickly between sounds, I'm not sure how it's going to handle that. But the module is top notch. This is the kind of quality you'd expect in 2024. While it may not have the rugged build quality of a TD-50 at this price range there's nothing that competes. I believe this product is going to be a market disrupter and that's good for drummers. I think Roland, while they've come out with some good quality stuff, needs to take a long look at what they're putting out looks wise. I liked the look of the VAD-307, but they packaged it with an inferior module. The big advantage of the TD27KV2 is the digital snare. It's the best E snare on the market, but for the overall value of what you're getting with the Strata, the TD27Kv doesn't come close. If someone with a 3k-4K budget is looking for an e-kit, this will be my no brainer reccomendation. My only caveat would be if you are wanting this for live performance, go play one first and load up some kits and play around with it. If you can live with the load times then this is the kit for you.

      Good e-kits are expensive but well worth the price. Just about all e-kits under $2,500.00 are not like playing a real drum set but are a good tool for beginning drummers to learn on. Once you have become a good to great drummer saving up for a great e-kit is a total game changer and a hell of a lot more fun to play.
