There are signature Garland moves here which define her style: the arm stretches, the hands on hips, the gesticulating hand, the pointers, the body hug, the crossed arms, the runway walk... all of that luscious kinaesthesia is beyond the beyond. The way she is swallowed up back into the darkness again out of the spotlight at the end of the song is breathtaking. She takes my breath away. Her stagecraft was unmatched.
St. Michael: I just want you to know how much people like me appreciate your description of her stagecraft. @@elizabethdacosta5601 I agree that it's her mastery of the art of gesture and posture which is where her artistry lay. Not so much the voice, which of course is distinctive and powerful, but one has to see the transmission of sound to visual with Judy. Her voice becomes embodied within that mesmerising set of gesticulations and that's how we come to understand the whole story she is telling. Judy is the greatest seller of the American songbook who ever lived and it's because of her meticulous stagecraft more than anything else.

You see that with almost every guest on her TV show. All the self-hugs are just another statement of what she lacked in her personal life.💔
I'm 48 and have been her biggest fan since I was 17 (1988). I make my living as a performer and this one is the ultimate inspiration and influence. Best teacher.
Dawn Evans there has been no one to match her. Then or now. Not even Michael Jackson who to me looks childish and amateur next to Judy. And when you think she pumped out performance after performance all those years while on prescription medication and alcohol, that to me makes all these presentations all the MORE incredible! How did she manage to do what she did? She was so prolific that really there should be more respect paid to her in contemporary culture. Why hasn't a national museum, music hall, civic monument or national campaign been funded or erected to continue her legacy? She seems still not to be fully appreciated at the levels of government that need to recognise her. Her contribution went on beyond the arts to civil rights. The Garland influence in the 20th century was gobsmacking and the mainstream still haven't realised. Give me the money and I will start a trust and a civic monument to continue the traditions and great themes of her work and art form. The wrong people are given all the money in this world.
She needs no backup singers, pyrotechnics, smoke and mirrors or auto tune or any other thing that would distract her audiences! She only needs a stage, mic and an orchestra and stand on the stage alone and slay every man, woman and child with that voice! Her talent is unmatched and can overshadow anyone, even Sinatra without singing one note! Oh how we need this woman today, to entertain us. May you Rest In Peace, Judy! And thank you for enriching our lives with your voice! ❤️
+Saxon -- After reading your comment and watching this video I realize once again how phenomenal Judy Garland was and I'm feeling downcast. Talent of this magnitude is extremely rare and, sadly, it is not universally cherished nor appropriately rewarded. It appears that by the mid-1960s key industry people had come to consider her just a piece of old furniture.
Noe Berengena i agree. Back then, networks would sadly reuse and tape over talk shows to save money and sadly a few of Judy’s guests shots on Merv Griffin and Dick Cavette shows did this. There are some poor quality copies that have found a home on UA-cam. Back then, the bigwigs thought that these talented legends were a dime a dozen because they were relatively young and plentiful in the early years of television. They didn’t realize that they had captured lightning in a bottle and voluntarily opened that bottle and lost a lot of classic legendary performances. Judy still has this unexplainable electricity to where everyone is mesmerized by her stage presence and God given Voice, that is unmatched even nearly fifty years since her death. I sadly no longer watch much TV or listen or like today’s “singers”. I rather rewatch Judy in UA-cam and I love reading comments from this generation that stumble upon Judy and are absolutely floored at her and her talent. They’re used to these mediocre singers and when they actually hear Garland’s powerful and amazing voice, it’s like an epiphany to them! Some actually wonder if she’s still alive and it’s sad when people inform them that she died years ago. lol they’re amazed by the fact that she isn’t using gimmicks or distracting special effects and she is mainly alone on stage singing live without auto tune
Sinatra was no match for Garland. And not only by a little either. She is by far the greatest performer who ever lived. Black, white or any other colour. Even better than Michael Jackson or any of those people that came later. The way she moves on stage is preternaturally splendid. Her kinaesthetics are completely inspired, magnetic and unique: she convulses and retracts, then explodes again. Garland is a force of nature and a work of art all at the same time. Feeling is everything and she makes you feel. Even though rehearsed at some level, there is a sense of complete improvisation regardless of any direction or rehearsal. Each time she sings it's fresh all over again. Each phrasing is unique and different. She is saying something new each time she opens her mouth. I also don't think many people realise how chic she was. She wore clothing like a model. So fabulous in her overall presentation, and way with everything: articulation, elocution, projection, stagecraft, presentation, lyrics and kinaesthetics. It's the package This was the ultimate performance artist and I don't care what anybody else says. No male nor female performer could match her, either then or now. Who can you think of even now with all the technology and special effects we have at our disposal who can match or overtake Garland. Any takers? There are simply none. She obliterated and chewed up the world in each performance and it's never recovered since. The drugs and pills and depression don't count. Thats not who she was. That's all by the wayside. Her truth of who she was (and remains) is in plain sight here for all to see. And that Truth can never die.
I have been a Judy fan since I was 8 yrs. Old. And that was several years ago. And she is still my favorite today. I am tired of all those people who blame her addiction problem on her. She wasn't one of those idiots like the ones today, who get hooked on drugs all by themselves. ELVIS, WHITNEY, JANIS, MICHAEL, TO NAME A VERY FEW. I DON'T FOLLOW ANY PERFORMERS OF THE DAY. She's riveting. Nearly 60 years after this performance, she still forces you to stop everything and behold. She still commands you to look nowhere else but at her as she touches your heart and mind in a way that feels almost cosmic. I'll never stopped being astounded by her.

Mark Whitman From watching many of her performances all through the 1960s, although not always at the top of her game after about 1965, most of the time she managed to still look great, and sing like no one else ever has. It was only in the last few months of her life that something happened I believe. I suspect she started having organ failure and was actually dying. She became seriously emaciated and nothing could have saved her at that point, but I think she could have been saved before that if she could have had treatment and been weaned off the drugs. I’m just judging by how she looked up to that last few months.
A.Haydar: I try to focus on the many triumphs she had throughout her life. Most singers/actors would have given half their lives to have had just one night like Carnegie Hall, and she had those experiences over and over. It had to have been wonderful.
Fido: We should have. No matter what it took. Although her daughters say she hated being looked at as tragic. She did have a lot of joy in her life, so I try to remember that.
I've always loved Judy's personal dress style. She had such a timeless sense of not only clothing but how to move, gesture, express while wearing those beautiful clothes. She had a model thin figure and fashions just hang off her tiny frame so gorgeously.
Bryan ismyname I agree. The fashion in the movie was ordinary and didn't capture Judy's very high end couture style. Judy understood great clothing. She favoured structured, tailored clothes with body and fabrics with weight in them. Wonderful heavy renaissance brocades and stiff silks and ottomans which gave her the air of a fashion silhouette. Her clothes gave her "line" and that's important for a singer whose "lines" were so iconic and studied and imitated. Those clothes were reminiscent of the Spanish couturier Balenciaga. Just knew what she was doing with clothes. That too, is another talent that people also don't understand or comment on, that she had in spades. The look was timeless. Compare that to the tacky, naked clothes of today's performers like JLo and Beyoncé, or Nikki Minaj and Miley Cyrus. We will forget all of that generation of hookery performers in 30 years time, but no one will ever forget Judy.
There is no singer like Judy Garland,no one ca match her. No one.Her acting, singing. The best Lisa, be ok proud of her. There only one Judy Garland. No one comes close to her, no one. R.I.P.my love. Her fans miss her today. No ones like her, never will be .
She on stage is amazing. No one comes close. No one ever did. No one ever will. She is a true forse of nature. The greatest entertainer ever. No superlative is too much praise.
I recently lost my husband and so now that is my theme song of my new solitary life 🎶 So when she sings that song it's exactly how I feel, but at the end of it it's almost like a victorious statement that she brings out into the song that she will make it all by herself giving people like myself one word HOPE 🌹🎶🌹 RIP Judy
when she doubles up on i could go on singing comes in with the beat, build it starts to feel that song/ its 56vyears ago and you still feel that bloody energy. howl yeah/ you go girl
Stellar peak vocal with ultimate performing skills showing no equal to Judy Garland, phenomenal "I Could Go On Singing" medley has Garland reaching deep singing from the depths of her soul holding nothing back, "By Myself" unequaled performance to this day...Judy simply Master Class as good as it gets!
Agreed totally the best singer ever George, my fave since 14 yrs. introduced by my older sister rest her soul, played "Judy At Carnegie Hall" from Overture to end, never quite the same after 56 yrs. ago, simply the greatest & experienced Judy live at 17 yrs, phenomenal experience in the 1st row! Love this "I Could Go On Singing" medley with Garland in killer form!!!
Now I'm responding to you Bradly. I'm so glad you agree with me and I would die to have been lucky enough to see Judy live. I'm sure it's a memory you'll never forget. I've seen liza live 4 times and remember that very well. But still would rather have seen Judy.
This woman out did even the Beatles at the height of their popularity in 1964 when she walked on stage during the night of 100 stars and the audience went absolutely crazy and wouldn’t let her off the stage until she sang! She wasn’t even supposed to sing and she created such hysteria that John Lennon supposedly said “ who could follow that?” How true! Judy Garland was the greatest entertainer ever
Dawn Evans because of political correctness you can't have another Garland. Garland was wonderful because she expressed the truth of who she was, whether good bad or ugly. We saw it all. That's what makes someone great: it's seeing the pain beneath the glamour. Like Princess Diana. We saw the pain. She wasn't afraid to show it to us. Today's performers are too self conscious because of the media age we live in and the PC age we live in so they're all petrified of exposing their truth. As long as political correctness continues, true talent will be compromised in all fields of human experience, not just entertainment. The way people speak now has killed all real meaning behind language and so no one can discern where the truth lay. With Judy Garland we see it instantly, she unmasks herself instantly. And we see a living breathing work of art before us. That takes its toll, but it's remarkable nevertheless. In many ways, Judy performed great service to the public by exposing her past, her feelings, her addictions etc to the media and world. The Judy story is a kind of Christ-figure story. Which is why people resonate with her. We watched her being held up and sacrificed to public ridicule. Judy's star power and narrative arc as a performer is a kind of secular form of religious worship.
She has never ever had an equal. As I have said before, there's Judy then nobody else. She gets everything there is to get out of a song, but, some how, some way she figures out how to get that little extra, that other singers only wish they could. After all she is JUDY.
Homer N. To make your long story short, there's Judy, A big gap, then everyone else. Todays singers don't sing, they scream and yell. This screaming to hit the high note is not singing, it sounds like the so called screaming singer is in labor, and just finished her last push. Music is suppose to be melodic, not the scream of excruciating pain. It's been 51 years since Judy left us, and she is just as relevant as before her death. She seems to get new fans each and every year. And it just might be because she sings with her heart and soul not like she's in a yelling contest.
She looks so happy here. The cancellation of her show a year later would, in my opinion be the start of her unfortunate downward spiral. R.I.P Judy no will ever come close to your greatness.
Leetylr: I think if she could have kept that show, been able to stay with her children in the US, and thus given up the medications she was taking, she could have survived, but long term use of those drugs destroy your organs. That severe emaciation she had in just the last few months of her life was the end. She couldn’t have been saved at that point even if she stopped the meds. But she still looked great when she was doing her show, and it had given her the stability that she so craved.
Humberto Barbosa I was never a Sinatra fan. Nowhere near Garland's level of artistry or mastery of expression and style. But I agree with his astute observation. With each song you can feel her collapsing inside because she gives so much of herself that it actually hurts. If you are sensitive enough you can feel her pain and that she is giving literally until it hurts - her and us. The only other public person who comes close - from whom I felt this same internalising until it hurt- was Princess Diana. She wasn't a singer but she was certainly a performer and "actress" of sorts. When people give of themselves publically in this sacrificial way, the world chews them up. The world is merciless : it demands so much from the good and the great ....and gives so little back in return.
Judy was the best singer actress was so damn funny and was an awesome lady !She was abused by alot of people people who gossiped lied about her ! She had the right to stand up for herself !
People always say that. But the Judy we got was perfect as she was. There "shouldn't" have been a different Judy because that wouldn't have resonated the way she did had she had NOT taken the pills and NOT drank and so on. Judy was just perfect with all her "failings" and all the drama because THAT was her journey. We each have our own. I don't care about future movies or future concerts because the ones I can see on here even on you tube are brilliant and that's just enough. I think too may people are not lovers of reality. They don't deal with what is. They deal in should'ves and could'ves and shouldn'ts and shoulds. I love the Judy we got her (even when she abused the hecklers in London on stage: perfect!) and I love her again and again each time I watch a rerun of The Wizard of Oz or a TV special because in that moment, right now, she's alive and well in my mind. For me, unlike for many other people, you see... Judy never died. She lives!
There is not even one person on this Earth who can sing like the great Jjudy Garland! I still get goose bumps listening to her! This lady is THE BEST! Oh how I miss her, too! What she had was truly GIVEN to her by God! Now she is in Heaven singing for Jesus Christ around His throne!!! YOU MUST BE BORN AGAIN. Jesus said! Amen!!!!
I also love Barbra Streisand. A God-given voice! Absolutely! My first choice will always be Judy Garland. The end of life's journey is the most important: before we die, we must truly repent of sin to Jesus, invite Him into your spirit, then seek Him for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit so that by His Power you walk with Jesus awaiting His SOON return! I put nobody down: the message Jesus gave me is: Walking With Jesus Will Cause You to Adore Him! There is no other way. If you can find him, watch Jimmy Swagart: on his SBN channel. God bless.
Bob Bateman Barbra was wonderful but she's no Judy Garland. Judy remains the greatest because she gave of herself. It's the giving that makes a performer great, instead of good. Streisand remains to this day too shrewd and calculating as a businesswoman to have that same "affect" on us. No one matches Garland - neither in her own day, nor even now. When all the Streisand's and Sinatra's and Jackson's and Cher's and Madonnas are long gone, Judy will still be performing in our hearts. Perhaps one who comes close is Freddy Mercury. And even then, he was no Judy. She outshines them all.

Cannot agree to treat them equally. Not with his behaviour on sets compared to Judy. She was a real pro whilst Sinatra was a man child with tantrums. Luckily he understood Judy's genius as he is known to say that it is Judy that will be remembered above others. He got that right.
I HEAR YOU BUT U CANT FORGET ELLA SARAH RAY ARETHA THEY ALL ALSO HAD THAT CERTAIN SOMETHING HELL PATSY CLINE AND HANK WILLIAMS TOO/ I AM A BIG MUSIC LOVER A big garland fan /AND I AGREE THERE ARE A ONLY A FEW MORE IN GARLAND 'S CATEGORY WHAT ABOUT BESSIE SMITH AND THE POWER IN HER VOICE. AND YOU CANT LEAVE O UT I THINK SAMMY DAVIS JR AND LIZA IS NO PUNK PEOPLE/ I GUESS I LOVE THEM ALL AND GARLAND BECAUSE OF THE TERRIBLE MISMANAGAMNT OF HER FUNDS WHNE SHE WAS WORKING/
This is what was sorely missing from Zellwegers performance as Judy. Sorry she was a low watt dud compared to the genuine article. Why on earth they had her sing for herself and not Garlands own voice is beyond me but even if they did, Renee's stage presence was a pale listless shadow next to Miss Entertainment the one, the only Judy
Not trying to dump I enjoyed the movie but it obviously fades to black in comparison to the real thing. The James Brown, Elvis and Aretha movies at least touched a cord performance wise. She did do a wonderful amazing job as Judy off stage. Sorry seeing this evoked these feelings of disappointment as I was first in line to go see Renee's Judy when it came out. Just saying and why do you need to characterize my comment or opinion as a troll dump. It's not
Judy Garland was the greatest entertainer of the 20th century.
Right there with you. I also cast votes for Chaplin and Sinatra. But my heart lives with Miss Gumm. Always.

Fido: We should have. No matter what it took. Although her daughters say she hated being looked at as tragic. She did have a lot of joy in her life, so I try to remember that.
I Just love how I can tune onto youtube & there She is! Judy Garland~ 💖
I love the dresses she is wearing. She looks so classy and her voice is like none other. Love and miss you, Judy.
In the movie they had her in a red dress that didn't work.
A lot of her clothes could be worn today easily
Favorite lady singer since I was 11im 62
Quite simply amazing and unequaled. No one can touch her.
All she Needs is a Spotligth a Stage an a Mic an Its Then Judy at Her Best , No one else cud do what she does with so Little , Her Talent then Erupts

@@ronniehayes178 Yes, Judy was an absolutely unique performer who was very much loved by her fans.
Always special.
She was and is the best entertainer of all time
I totally agree!!
I have always agreed with Elaine Strich's comment that Judy Garland was the most talented woman of the 20th Century.
...and Elaine a great one herself knew!
lol..strich and about 10 million others said that...
“Cause it’s solo! All alone! By myself! FROM NOW ON!” Girl I feel ya.... 💕
Incredible moment
I’m here with you.
She on stage is amazing. No one comes close. No one ever did. No one ever will. She is a true forse of nature. The greatest entertainer ever. No superlative is too much praise.
Every time I watch and hear her sing, “By Myself”, it rips my heart out.
Agreed
By myself is my favourite of all her songs. It's just spectacular and fabulous and meaningful and overblowingly lush in every way.
Same
Same my god
I recently lost my husband and so now that is my theme song of my new solitary life 🎶 So when she sings that song it's exactly how I feel, but at the end of it it's almost like a victorious statement that she brings out into the song that she will make it all by herself giving people like myself one word HOPE 🌹🎶🌹 RIP Judy
Now. That’s. Talent
This is beautiful, what a beautiful soul
when she doubles up on i could go on singing comes in with the beat, build it starts to feel that song/ its 56vyears ago and you still feel that bloody energy. howl yeah/ you go girl

I never heard such a beautiful voice in all my life 😍
Her version of I Could Go On Singing here is far superior to the film version...a truly 'sock' version! Wow!
Incredible! Real talent, good training. So unlike today's 'singers'
By myself is just amazing the way she sings it ....wow love you judy
Such a genius....
My Penultimate Diva of All Times! Simply great!
Обажаю Джуди!!! Она прекрасна и гениальна!!! !! 💞❤️LoVE
Pure class, what a professional artist, no one can match her
Amazing in By Myself at the end how she hits those notes perfectly with no orchestra
'Cause it's solo, all alone, BY MYSELF, FROM NOW ON!!!!
I love you judy rest in heaven gorgeous
BEST singer ever!!!!! Favorite singer since I was 12 years old. I'm 60 now!!!!! Loved I Could Go On Singing and these songs.
Me too, George! She always was, and still is!!
George went on from seeing Judy in 65 to Liza in 1970, from then too many times to count plus got to meet her in real life and she is amazing!
I have to agree!
Great songs, great singer. Love those old songs.
Love this Song
This woman out did even the Beatles at the height of their popularity in 1964 when she walked on stage during the night of 100 stars and the audience went absolutely crazy and wouldn’t let her off the stage until she sang! She wasn’t even supposed to sing and she created such hysteria that John Lennon supposedly said “ who could follow that?” How true! Judy Garland was the greatest entertainer ever
At 07:20 She launches into Garland Mode and begins to take us on a trip that will knock our socks off!
You said it, Saxon! My pulse rate increased right along with hers!
Where is her equal today, there is no one!
YOU SAID IT!!!!! No one is or ever will be as great as Judy!!!!!!
There never will be, either!
Gosh she looked more glamorous here than than she did in the entire movie !
I love Judy
Just think she was in vaudeville, on the radio, on television, in movies, on Broadway, Cabaret. I grew up on this music as a young child.
She is so fabulous and great. Thank you guys
Judy Judy Judy ..... give her a good song, a bar stool, and ~maybe~ a mic, ...... that's all Folks~!~!~!~
Great, no words. Thanks guys.
Love Frances Gumm 👠💛💋
Bravo 👍& to Sing Like this with microphone above her ? Amazing 🌹❤️❤️
Mr. Francis Albert Sintra said, "every time she sang, she died a little."
who cares what that self centered mafia wannabe said?
💔
She lived every song she sang. When you saw her in "A star is born" singing "The man that got away", you feel this woman knows what pain is
Brava, Judy....we miss you.
^^X^^
look she in garland mode at 3 48 when she doubles up on i could go on singing i feeling it then/ she is working this
Thank you, Buzz Stephens. This is so amazing (or “marvelous” as she would say!). Thank you so much!
Elizabeth Dacosta You’re right: I can hear Judy’s exclamation of “Maaarvelous” too!
Elspeth C. 🥀
Any 'thumbs down' comments are interpreted as ' not my cup of tea'.
That's okay. Greatness will live forever.
❣️
bravo encore one more time
Absolutely wonderful -- all she needs is an orchestra and a stage....the rest comes so naturally!
Judy was the best singer actress was so damn funny and was an awesome lady !She was abused by alot of people people who gossiped lied about her ! She had the right to stand up for herself !
I love her...wonderful
I have that movie in DVD
she is working it but that dark days weren't gone i damn well wish they were.
gesto, volonta',intensita' che fanno diventare pregi anche i "difetti" della voce. EMOZIONANTE anche dopo tanti anni.
It's the Judy that might have been.. More movies, more music for decades.
She lives!
Judy, I love you. That's all.
Judy, Ella, Barbra, Aretha, Whitney - just get up and sing. It's so simple when these ladies do it.
Dont forget Karen Carpenter xo
Totally agree!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bob Bateman s
was hthis a bit more like carnage hall. you just feel the bloody energy/
ok so its 1am i got to go to work and get som esleep and when she double put on i could go on singing and t put sit rohr ton the money / then starts to work it i with her who body/ I'm in the chair with my hands up saying you go girl hell i resale do got to go to slow after on on more/ that movie netter be damn good/ it was 56 years ago and i am still rocking and that is why garland ( a few select others get you going? heeeeeeeeellllllll yeahhhhh / goodnight
fucking talent!!!
Judy garland and frank Sinatra were the 2 greatest talents of the 20th century
And Whitney Houston in her prime.
Amen brother!!!
Cannot agree to treat them equally. Not with his behaviour on sets compared to Judy. She was a real pro whilst Sinatra was a man child with tantrums. Luckily he understood Judy's genius as he is known to say that it is Judy that will be remembered above others. He got that right.
well there ella, dinanh billie sarah, bille sammy come on now
I HEAR YOU BUT U CANT FORGET ELLA SARAH RAY ARETHA THEY ALL ALSO HAD THAT CERTAIN SOMETHING HELL PATSY CLINE AND HANK WILLIAMS TOO/ I AM A BIG MUSIC LOVER A big garland fan /AND I AGREE THERE ARE A ONLY A FEW MORE IN GARLAND 'S CATEGORY WHAT ABOUT BESSIE SMITH AND THE POWER IN HER VOICE. AND YOU CANT LEAVE O UT I THINK SAMMY DAVIS JR AND LIZA IS NO PUNK PEOPLE/ I GUESS I LOVE THEM ALL AND GARLAND BECAUSE OF THE TERRIBLE MISMANAGAMNT OF HER FUNDS WHNE SHE WAS WORKING/
I kissed her
This is what was sorely missing from Zellwegers performance as Judy. Sorry she was a low watt dud compared to the genuine article. Why on earth they had her sing for herself and not Garlands own voice is beyond me but even if they did, Renee's stage presence was a pale listless shadow next to Miss Entertainment the one, the only Judy
Baffling, indeed. Lip syncing was the only option, imo. Nobody sings Judy but Judy!
Why would you take this as an opportunity to dump on Renee Zellweger?
Not trying to dump I enjoyed the movie but it obviously fades to black in comparison to the real thing. The James Brown, Elvis and Aretha movies at least touched a cord performance wise. She did do a wonderful amazing job as Judy off stage. Sorry seeing this evoked these feelings of disappointment as I was first in line to go see Renee's Judy when it came out. Just saying and why do you need to characterize my comment or opinion as a troll dump. It's not
Kissed by god
