@@aspillust sorry that was a bit rude and you're entitled to your own opinions, but I can't read more than one panel without cringing really hard. I shouldn't be shaming you for enjoying something though, no matter how cringe I find it.
I find the inconsistencies in the characters in Lore Olympus so infuriating. It makes it so hard to read because you're constantly wondering who is who, especially with persephone. I get that her hair changes and that's quite interesting, but her figure and face shape also change so drastically as well.
i recently watched an opinionpiece on it and before they even said something about it I was like bro do your characters have consistent facial structures? (I'd never seen more than the cover before) I know it's hard but I'm also not a published author...
@@mer_acle8101 right?! It's comic art 101. I do a comic on webtoon, it's just a hobby so the art isn't great but I enjoy it. When you're learning how to produce a comic, character consistency is the first thing you learn. It's SO important!! Some people do just find it hard, no matter their skill level, so they might find it easier to do a turnaround and refer to it at all times. I feel like some artists (not necessarily Rachel Smythe) think they're above such practices but if you can't get the basics right then every other part of your comic suffers for it.
THIS. Persephone's hair changes wayy too often.. back when I was a fan, in earlier episodes it's mentioned that her hair grows/is controlled by her emotions? But that got old SO quick because her hair parting & curl pattern can even change in a flash when she's sitting & doing nothing.. it was such a pain.
Huh, I didn’t find it all that annoying. To me, I interpreted all those “inconsistencies” as design choices to fit the mood of the situation. How a person feels and how others see them all affect the mood and in turn affects how the characters are designed in that moment.
Right? And the way they loose their interesting body types that they (sort of) had in the beginning. Like at first Minthe had small boobs and stuff but later on she starts to look like every other girl with the typical hourglass Rachel does. ☹ Also, same goes for the men, they're all built like upside-down triangles and always larger than the women. I'm like, just please do some body/height variation!
and everyone having the same everchanging faces surely doesn't help Like love can you please decide how your character's facial proportions are there are not enough colors for me to differentiate them
@@mer_acle8101 everyone looks the same, and rs still manages to draw Persephone like a different girl every other panel. Her only identifying feature is that she’s pink
big warning, rachel really dislikes criticisms, redraws and edits, so be careful- hopefully this video doesnt get mass reported and stuff like other videos / posts
That sucks if true! How somebody can get so far in an art/creative field and not know how to take valid criticism is beyond me. It seems to happen a lot with online self-taught artists. One big plus of going to a class setting is getting used to feedback from your professor and peers. However, I'm sure Rachel has received feedback from editors or publishing companies etc, so it's icky when artists don't accept it from the general population who are perceiving the art. (Sorry for the long comment!)
Rachel literally made her comic by building off an already existing story surely she of all people should have no problem with people building off her stuff but here we are. There's not even a defence of "they characters are personal to her!" BC THE CHARACTERS AREN'T HERS
I understand where people come from with the art style of Lore Olympics, I used to love it, but when you keep running and reading it really just starts to blend and their characters all being super bright doesn’t help them stand out well. Lavender using a lighter colour pallet for the characters made them stand out more (just my opinion tho, I don’t really like Lore Olympics cause I’m a history buff and modern retelling hearts my heart)
I completely understand where you're coming from, especially with the last part! I'm a huge mythology geek, and things like the Hercules movie hurt my soul.
All of the characters being the same tone makes it kind of confusing when I new pink character is in the panel and it takes me a second to figure out who it is.
The designs early on were fairly good but as of now the style and design has become really bad, especially with same face syndrome and the cheesification
Ikr when the time skip happened and heras daughter appeared grown up, I LEGIT THOUGHT IT WAS HERA bc they looked identical, and I was so confused bc HERA was supposed to be in a COMA. Also sometimes when Daphne appeared it took an embarrassing amount of time to realize she wasn't Persephone. At the very least, the MAIN CHARACTERS should be more recognizable than any of the side characters
I love how you said how you liked the lore olympus style because even I have seen a lot of people critiqueing the comic saying they don't like the style but personally even as someone who doesn't really like the comic I love the watercolor texture and the lineless style
Seriously. I cant believe some people even cant tell them apart and think the art blends together? Ive never heard anyone say that before, lore olympus is one of the few comics that doesn't hurt my head trying to figure out whose who.
I hate the fact that they tried to make a “feminist” version of the Persephone story by making the feminist character abusive. The Abduction of Persephone myth was created in a time when girls were married off to men with only her father’s consent, whisked away, and never seen again. The myth was about a woman, Demeter, who had that happen to her daughter, Persephone, but she ended up getting her back, if only for two thirds of the year, and even then Persephone ended up falling in love with Hades. It was a story, much like Beauty and the Beast, made to comfort these women. I have no idea how the media turned Demeter into an over-controlling monster.
As someone who’s only Greek mythology is Percy Jackson (and I’ve only read two of the books) I think it would maybe make people wanna read the actual myths to see what’s it’s base off! Because it’s pretty easy to find the myths in a short story that’s maybe that’s a minute to read and is always available then having to read a whole wed comic + waiting for the chapters to come out!! Also tons of stories have been changed which makes people wanna find the OG ones more so it all works out :3
@@Azulabetta553-sj1ho As a pagan, I feel kinda icky about a lot of stories that use real godly pantheons. I personally don’t think you should write about them unless you ask a LOT of the people who actually follow them. Because Hellenists do exist, and bad representation of the gods they worship affects them. In lore Olympus, Apollo sa’s Persephone. Because of this, some people started sending d3ath threats to people who worship Apollo. Even if it’s not that extreme, it still affects them. Sure, to people like you they’re fictional, but to us they’re real. Imagine if some guy wrote a book about your best friend, and in the book she’s portrayed as a terrible person who bullies people, and everyone who reads it thinks that it’s true. Or if someone who has bullied you for years is written as a saint. The pjo series is problematic in its own sense even outside of mythology, but that’s bad too. Ares in pjo is a misogynistic @sshole, in actual mythos he’s known as the protector of women. Poseidon in mythology is just a chill dude, in mythology he throws “temper tantrums” (murders whole cities) and sa’s people. Rick also made Medusa into some sort of weirdo who’s obsessed with Poseidon, which is disrespectful in so many ways.
@@Q33Rwitch yeah that’s really valid I can see where your coming form! My point is that, this might make people wanna read the OG myths even more! Still I get the point
Another thing I genuinely don’t understand is how Persephone was SA’d and it was just glossed over in the comic. She also had green hands at some point but god forbid the MC has scars.
@@Q33Rwitch I see what you mean. I personally love Rick Riordan as a Hindu (obv. not the same thing as pagan) because he never tried to come across as someone trying to disrespect the religion (There are people who try and discredit non-abrahamic religions in their own work about other gods). He made a few passing comments that were… concerning, but I don’t believe he intended to disrespect Greek mythology. He also had to censor stuff because it was a kid’s book. Medusa probably turned insane as a monster. Also, Ares is the god of war. If he existed in the modern era, I feel like he’d be an internet troll who says weird shit like “women belong in the kitchen”. It’s obviously up to pagans to decide what is good representation in media and I just wanted to share my thoughts too. Rick Riordan is also not the type of person to genuinely disrespect religions and stuff, so when it’s a religion like Hinduism he recruits other authors so there’s that. He’s very against cultural appropriation so I don’t think he tried to disrespect your beliefs. I hope you enjoyed my thoughts.
I agree completely that the Lore Olympus style is super interesting! I used to love the style, but i feel like despite a lot of people working on the comic now and it obviously being more professionally produced on a bigger scale, the art of the comic has just gotten so samey yet inconsistent. The character colours are cool, but then you realise that theyre one of the only things setting the characters apart from one another. And the proportions of characters tend to get a bit wacky haha. I still think its a cool comic, just a little disenchanted with the art consistency and some of the plot choices :))))
Even the colors aren't consistent. That's the biggest problem too. Even early on, she keeps changing what they look like. Sometimes this happens*even in the same episode*
You honestly should've redid some of the more...*bad* panels from Lore. There's legitimately times where you can't even tell who is who. I would love to see them redesigned given that except Minthe (who doesn't make sense to be red), you can't really tell them apart
Yeah, Minthe should be a minty green kinda color. Yanno, cause she's the literal mint _plant?_ I could see her being white or a light pink or lavender because those are the colors of mint flowers, but... not red.
@@SpringStarFangirl The only reason I can think of for her being red was because she needed to be obvious she's terrible. A villain. (Funny enough, I actually don't think she's the worst. I think *Hades* is arguably the worst person in the whole story) This discounts how so many of them just look very..similar. Like Hebe and Hera.
@@SpringStarFangirlI mean, in LO she's a cthonic river nymph, so she's colored after the clay/coloration in the underworld river. She doesn't actually become a mint plant until Persephone turns her into one as a play on words, and she doesn't retain the power to change back and forth in the retelling.
I have no interest in reading the original comic, but I'd love to see a Lavendertowne redraw of the stuff you're talking about! I hope this gets more likes so she sees it and maybe will do that in a part 2
i think i love your redesign videos the most :) there's something so cozy about seeing little or big changes that reflect the artist's view of the character. would love to see redesigns of the mean girls from mean girls as cartoon characters now that the IP is getting a movie musical spin off
I always love how you come at these redesign challenges with a lot of respect. I feel like often I'll watch someone redesign a character and the person drawing usually tears down the orginal and are unnecessarily critical. You point out the faults of a peice but you also compliment the peice and the ways the artists handle certain aspects of their drawings and talk about how interesting a style is. Even in the videos where you definitely dont like certain designs, you're still often nice about it and explain why you personally dont like certain aspects of it. It's just really refreshing to see.
I think criticism to the point of actual harassment and threats to the original artist is just as bad as some of the behaviors in boyfriends but the main criticism iv seen against it is how boyfriends chose to write its characters, specifically "nerd". It features a lot of icky scenes and uncomfortable dialogue that comes off as fetishization of gay characters, not saying that some spicy scenes in comics are bad but boyfriends sometimes does it in a very stereotypical and harmful way.
hot take, but if the author was a cisgender man barely anyone would be calling this fetishization. It's kind of weird calling something fetishization when it's made by someone in the community they're supposedly fetishizing. the author is a trans gay man who wrote a story about gay men. I've seen cis gay men write things that are a million times more sexual, feminine, and "fetishy" and no one calls them out for it. It feels like a big double standard.
how can a gay author fetishize his own identity? boyfriends isn't to my taste at all but I cannot help but feel the criticism levied would be much less severe were he a cis man.
So in my art school, my comics class had us all working off of the same prompt. It's a lot of fun to see the different ways people take a scene and this was basically like that. Everyone has their own signature and their own preferences. c:
Lore Olympus is more problematic than Boyfriends and I'll die on that hill. [I'm so sorry, this vid has triggered two oddly specific gripes I have and I'm going to rant even tho no one asked.] Hear me out! [[Edit: 87 replies later. I'm not saying the author of boyfriends has never done anything wrong. I'm not even saying that the comic is good. I'm just saying the story itself isn't problematic as people make it out to be. Christ alive y'all.]] The main problems ppl have with Boyfriends that I've seen is: that it's fetishizing gay men and 'written for straight women' and that it's bad representation of gay men and a trans man.... the author is a gay trans man. Like what do u want? I'm pretty sure a stupid queer story written by a queer person isn't fetishization what are you on. And about the names: Boyfriends is a spoof of the BL genre. A spoof. Meaning a humorous and somewhat satirical take on a genre. They are archetypes bc that's the joke, or at least part of the context for a lot of the jokes. Bc a spoof often pokes fun of tropes and character archetypes. (They have cannon names too so eh). Also throughout the story they have genuine character moments in between the comedy so?? It's just very silly to me. I totally get it if you don't like it, it is *weird* and *niche*. But problematic? eh. As for Lore Olympus. I'm not going to sit here and lie and say that the comic is bad. It's not, the art is absolutely gorgeous and I respect that. I think the writing is also good? but the whole thing makes me too uncomfy to give an objective judgement. For starters: the main couple is ~cannonically~ a 19 year old and a 2000 year old. The 2000 year old (who's functionally the equivalent of like 40s? 50s? middle age) also becomes *HER BOSS*. That's the love interest..? Age gap relationships or other things that **can impair consent** aren't 100% a deal breaker inherently, there can be additional context that makes it different, but LO never addresses it. Which means we as the readers have no reason to believe that this middle-aged man's 19 year old employee can properly consent to whatever tf is going on between them. And then there's the matter of Apollo... iykyk. Again, you can depict heavy things such as this, one of the things that's great about art is being able to address heavy topics, but you have to be careful. And it's less the scene/situation itself and more of how it's used as a plot device. If you need a plot device DO NOT USE SA. please. Thank you for coming to my unnecessary ted talk. I feel like the internet is gaslighting me about this and I need to yell into the internet void. To be clear, zero problems with the vid, it's just talking about paneling not debating comic ethics lol. I just have oPiNions
Hi i agree with everything you said bcs i have had those particular gripes for the longest time- the only reason lore olympus is considered more acceptable is bcs its a straight couple- but boyfriends would have never gotten the amount of hate it gets if it was just a slice of lifey tropey romance about a straight couple
I think I agree with you(bc i didn't read boyfriends and am hearing about lore olympus for the first time ever lol), but if lore olympus is ***heavily*** inspired by greek mythology... let's say that greeks back in the days had a lot of strange (and illegal nowadays) fetishes and age differences is the least illegal one...
another thing that makes lore Olympus worse (as far as I know bc I refuse to read it) is that they paint the relationship between Hades and Persephone in a bad light but if you just sit down and read one greek mythology article about them you'll find out that Hades and Persephone actually did love each other and Hades was a good husband who treated Persephone as an equal(despite it being incestuous) She was considered the queen of the underworld not just Hades bride and was just as feared as him maybe even more.
THANK U , Boyfriends is genuinely cute. Like it's not bad whatsoever and the parts where it gets sexual are quite normal to me. As a amab person who likes men the kinks shown here are some of the most normal things you'll find! The good boy thing and so forth aren't fetishing anything bc these jokes aren't the majority of the comic. This comic never tries to be some sort of serious story driven thing full of feels. It's a feel good comic you can go to to just feel nice and warm ans fuzzy. Plus half the time when I see critiques of it they usually come from straight men. I'm sorry but this comic wasn't made for you.. That's why you're not enjoying it. Everyone wants to have good story reasons to have gay characters in a story like this is game of thrones. Let us one feel good comic with no trauma, for goodness sake
Actually you brought up something here that really icks me in many webtoons: the lack of backgrounds, even the hint of them. It makes me feel like all the characters are operating within some strange colourful void.
One thing I love about what you do is that you talk about what you learned from the other artists. There's an appreciation for what others do differently and, even if it's not your taste or something you wouldn't do personally, you can still acknowledge their strengths. And it's nice to hear! Overall, I enjoy the way you set these up and I'm interested in the points you raise.
the way I would probably read boyfriends if it was redrawn and rewritten by lavendertowne. her designs are sm nicer on the eyes and aren’t so stereotypical, the writing already seems a lot better and the the comedy approach was a nice touch!
thats what i was thinking for boyfriends and lore olympus. but of course not heartstopper, i like that comic a lot and the writing is SOOOO well done imo, altho i think id prefer lavendertownes art style? not saying the og artist is bad, its just simple and i rlly like more detailed stuff + another reason i wont go into
You’d rather read a comic about gay and trans characters if it was made by a cis straight woman rather than an actual gay and trans man because it would be “less tropey”??? Fuck that. She made it unoriginal and boring, boyfriends was charming because it was purposely about tropes and stereotypes. I don’t want perfect gays and grindr jokes, I want authentic stupidity
It's pretty unfair to criticize the designs for being stereotypical when that's the whole point. They are meant to be stereotypes. You are criticizing something for successfully doing what it was trying to do.
(my whole comment was edited to better say what I meant to) I think the original makes me feel icky because it feels like the characters have very little personality and each characters is just a stereotype. I know the artist was going for stereotypes, but it’s just a pet peeve of mine when cute characters don’t feel complex - they deserve a more fleshed out personality
true but the characters aren't based off of what people actually act like, they're archetypes you see in those western schools shows made in a comedic way. they're supposed to be stereotypical
as someone whose seen the controversies surrounding boyfriends and lore olympus, its wild that she mentioned it for boyfriends and not lore olympus coz imo the controverssy for lore olympus is way bigger and its criticisms are way worse imo - predatory borderline pedophilic relationships romanticised and persephone changing from kidnapped, raped, manipulated and forced by hades(original source/inspo) into something cute and romantic, which then demonises her grieving mother as hysterical, and all the misogyny rip.
Heartstopper is the one you nailed the most imo. Also I agree with you when you say we shouldn't send hate comments to artist because I the end you can just stop looking at their work, if you don't like it go see some artists that you actually like instead. (Of course I it's controversial that's another story b we are not talking about that)
For a comedy series I kinda really like that the characters are just called “goth” or “prep” (yes, I do know they have official names). Whether it was intentional or not, I feel like it already gives you a base idea of what the character is like, and everything they do will be interesting whether their actions confirm or deny the stereotype. Over time they can show that the characters are more nuanced that initially presented, but for a comedy series I think straightforward names like that let you hit the ground running. I like it a lot.
The “watch this” face made me actually laugh out loud! I think it’s really interesting thing people based on other peoples art like this, especially when they’re transparent about what parts they feel like they didn’t improve! I definitely think your pages are more structured and convey more story wise but I also think that the original pages have a certain je ne sais quoi that make them, but they are (not that I’ve read any of them😅)
This is such a cool art exercise that I wouldn't have even thought of! Now, I want to try this with "Jackson's Diary," "Odd Girl Out" and maybe "Daybreak"!! :D Also, I really liked your redraws, the one for "Heartstopper" especially. You further captured Charlie's discomfort and the dark situation he was in at that moment.
HI!! Recently your comic has been featured in my school library, I was the very first to borrow it! I really enjoyed Unfamiliar and I recommended it to my friends. Everyweek we get a free audio book thing for more popular books, yours was included! Great job, I hope you keep up the good work 🥰
I really like the way you put your own spin on the pages of the comics and put in your own interpretations! Seeing your process of the panels and notes is honestly really cool. I think coming from an audience side, it would be nice to know why the webtoons you're redesigning are considered infamous. The only webtoon that was given some attention to what was infamous about it was Boyfriends, so if you ever did it again (which I would love to see when it comes to the comic-making progress) it would be nice to have some background info for what makes the webtoon infamous for people who might not know anything about the comics in general.
After trying out my own comic I totally understood Alice Oseman's style choices. I feel like I can just see her doing exactly what we all do, trying to draw this beautiful style and realising it has to be drawn THOUSANDS of times at EVERY angle and going...okay, I need to pull back here.
Hey Haley! Back in 2019, my art teacher played some of your videos to demonstrate the projects she had us do. I said to my self “oh! I know her.” (Wasn’t a subscriber at the time) then when I was trying to learn more ways to draw characters, I came across your videos and started watching and what got me hooked was your CreepyDrawsta vids and I started watching more and more of your stuff! You are a very talented and lovely lady! 😄
Girl i usually avoid saying "fixed" art n shit but GOT DAMMMM you really did fix that first page of boyfriends. The style, the background, their designs, literally everything is like SO much better and interesting. Same for lore Olympus. The artdtyle is good, very pleasant to the eye, but i think that how you changed the perspectives a bit and all those details are perfect.
I’m glad you defended Boyfriends and didn’t try to “fix” the comics like you mentioned at the end. I was hesitant seeing the title of “infamous” webtoons as I enjoy all of them and didn’t wanna listen to hate comments about each one. I think it’ll be interesting to see you draw the characters in your style as they’re all very different. For Lore Olympus, I understood that every pose was a stylistic choice like how Minthe held her phone to me indicated that she didn’t bother to reply or looked bored conveyed quite well to me but it conveyed a different message when you redrew it, I think yours was overall more direct? And I adore Boyfriends as an unserious and fun webtoon so I’m glad you said that it honestly doesn’t deserve the hate it gets. Your redraw of it did take away the core essence of what it was and made it more mainstream in a way than how the original is sticking to its aesthetic more but they were all interesting iterations :)
Hey LavenderTowne, remember when you drew Jacob, Bella, and Edward as how they are described in the book? I was wondering, if you could, maybe draw MORE of the Twilight characters as they are described in the books? It’d be pretty cool to see you draw more characters, if you can and want to, you do you.
I'm happy you were so kind to the Boyfriends comic especially. I think that much of the criticism it got was overdone. Yes, it was silly. Yes, the author had done some problematic stuff in the past. But it's not fetishising when queer people write queer characters, even if they may be stereotypical or unpaletable to cishet audiences. It does way more harm to dogpile on queer artists who publish queer stories than to just let imperfect stories be out there. So I'm glad you made a selection of three well known webcomics, and treated them all the same, despite their receptions.
You are so wholesome, I love it. Keep doing what you're doing and being an amazing artist. Please keep being yourself! You're an awesome cretor, thank you!
Hm, these all turned out pretty interesting! I'm gonna be honest, I'm not a fan of the Boyfriends redesign, mostly because the simple and pastel style is part of what drew me to the comic to begin with (though I do like the outfit you gave Goth). This version of it is a lot less eye-catching to me. The Lore Olympus redesign is so great though, your art style works phenomenally with LO's characters, and I love your redesign of Hades (the nose shape is so good)!! It strikes the balance of simple overall designs and distinguishing features that LO tries for, but doesn't always hit. Also personal thing, but I love that you gave them actual and consistent hairlines, that's like one of my biggest gripes with the LO art style 😭 (I don't know enough about Heartstopper to have a personal opinion on it, but the redesign for it looks great either way!)
Those were my least favorites, honestly... I feel like prep would never use clothes like that and the pastel cutesy colors are signature of Boyfriends' style...she mantained the colors from the othee comics, so idk why she decided to change this one... And idk how to feel about making Goth the shorter one...
@@milenartmeire2588 yeah fr, Prep looked like a grungy skater guy and wasn't recognizable at all. And it was super weird how she made Goth super small and skinny... I don't want to think it's because he's transmasc and Asian but aaa😬 he's looking like a chimney sweep
@@felixascends4514literally my thought process. I was like, "are these subconscious changes orrr???" Bc changing it so the transmasc person is shorter made me raise a brow. Always keep basic design choices the same even in redraws. Goth is taller than prep in canon, so keep him taller in redraws
i also dont understand why she made goth shorter? i don't want to immediately assume its because hes trans but it was a pretty odd choice to make and she didn't explain why 😭
Honestly like the idea of prep being much taller because his wants are as tall as him! Making whiney characters bigger or taller is honestly something i'd like to see more. It makes the character feel more self centered when they take up more space on the page! Also, your design for prep reminded me of Scott Pilgrim which I found funny.
Part of the boyfriends hate comes from refrainbow doing a lot of weird or shitty stuff. Ex: drawing smut of the bts members when one of them was still a minor. Edit: guys this was literally just an example of the things people commonly say when talking about refrainbow. I know he apologized, I know he was a minor when I drew it. I have literally no opinion about the situation so please stop acting like that's what I said.
And refrainbow APOLOGIZED for it. He has also apologized for other stuff because he is an ADULT and learns and is sorry for mistakes he did as a IGNORANT KID And i want to add in that Boyfriends/refrainbow haters are always beating a dead horse or grabbing straws🙄
Dude ive been following you for 6+ years and ive always wanted to buy your merch and help support you and comment on your posts but I was never able to make a yt account, I own bith your books at home and I still watch you to this day, thank you for helping me through depression and making my childhood 💗
I feel like should be an inbetween shot in Lore Olympus of her taking off her outfit, cause it's weird to go from dressed to not in one panel on the same page. Or maybe the panel of her looking at her phone should of been the second panel.
wonderful vid! thank you so much for approaching this positively and respectfully, i genuinely enjoy two of these three comics & it always makes me nervous to see videos abt them since they get trashed on a lot ;w; it genuinely did just feel like you were treating them as studies rather than "fix-it"s and i am all for that vibe 👌 this is such a fun idea tho and now i kinda wanna try it w some of my fave webcomics! it was super neat seeing your versions of these pages & the differences in how you approach comics & visual storytelling vs the original artists. great stuff! 💖
I've actually always really liked the Lore Olympus style the problem is none of the characters body types are consistent or recognizable after a while, I think the artist just got lazy and her story got so popular she had to get more done in less time so the art is worse quality. But I really like how all the characters are one color and the watercolor/lineless style
tbh I feel like Boyfriends doesnt deserve the hate. Alotta people say its fetishizy for adults having desires, while other times saying its infantizing for them having cute moments. I see alot of people were on and on about the character tropes but like, thats the point? Theyre literally named after them, lol. There are so many animes out there that have, for example, a tsundere that is physically abusive, short, and into plushies, without being aware of it. Boyfriends makes those character tropes ON PURPOSE! And its not necessarily like they're harmful either, theyre just tropes
they just got annoyed by webtoon ads and then went out of their way to invent a justification for their negative feelings because nowadays you can't just don't like it, you must say it's bad and problematic and that's why it sucks and everyone who likes it is evil
the webtoon itself is fine but a lot of people have gripes with the artist because of stuff they’ve drawn in the past like nsfw of underage band members and interacting with explicit art of minors ect. But a lot of people use the artists bad behaviour to hate on the webtoon when really the only valid criticism is that boyfriends is kinda cringe lol
@@RedOmnitrix606RedOmnitrix60 ‘making fetishes of gay people’ the author is literally a gay man?? since when is writing a gay comic as a gay person fetishisation, and not just *being gay???*
If you ever do this type of video again, I'd LOVE to see your take on something like Freaking Romance or something like Killstagram, both have ended but were very popular before they ended. Another one that's currently popular is Down to Earth (still on going currently) or even Everything is fine
I'm so excited she did Boyfriends! That's my comfort webtoon 🖤 It got me through some depressing times and I picked it up again to read it from the beginning. I would so love to have it in physical form someday.
I was at the store today and I found the second volume of your book, sadly I haven’t read the first one but I wanted to say the design of the book is stunning.
Boyfriends is actually pretty good, it’s just very stereotyped. I see a LOT of people using the excuse it’s “cringe” to be extremely homophobic. Most of the hate actually started from the animated (?) voiceover (the voiceover literally sounds like it’s mocking the WEBTOON because of how bad it is, and people seem to think bad voice acting = terrible WEBTOON for some reason). I think anyone who hates it should actually try to read the WEBTOON, it’s seriously not that bad 🤷 and anyone that says that they aren’t homophobic and they hate the WEBTOON (not because of the voice acting) then they are just going along with the hate. I get not liking something, but the fact that people don’t like it tell the creator, the characters and people that like it to kīll themselves is disgusting.
This was so fun to watch! It would be cool if you did this again. (Ps ik it’s in a scroll format and not infamous to my knowledge, but I love “I love Yoo” so much and would love to see you redesign it)
I love Boyfriends. Thanks for mentioning the comic. Having a wholesome fluffy comic all about being happy and in-love is such a nice breather among the other comics. It’s a shame it’s on hiatus. And also terrible that people hate on the author for outdated views and actions they did when they were under the age of 14. I also liked underage characters when I was 12 and said some dumb shit at that age. None of which I agree with now. It bothers me that the haters of the comic act like every child was pure and perfect and never did the wildest of stuff
right? the boyfriends hate is so horrible. the creator gets mocked and harassed for no other reason than people think their comic is cringe and jump on every opportunity to harass them. imo the criticism about fetishizing gay men, trans men, and have a boring storyline are super yikes considering the creator is a gay trans man living in a homophobic country. shocking that most of the haters consider themselves allies when they act like this
I loved this video! As someone who’s just starting out with their comic it was awesome to see how you’d do these comics and how you work. I’d totally love to see more of this! ❤
I have seen many videos critiquing Boyfriends and I still don’t get why people hate it. Most of the criticisms are either unreasonable or plain untrue. Its just a cute little story about a polyamorous relationship and their slice of life adventures.
@@palomaroggeri8680 it feels like a fetish, on the same level as Yaoi. The ‘nerd’ character in specific seems so much like pedo bait, as a survivor of that shit, it feels so incredibly insulting to watch it be romanticized. Overall, the comic is also so dry that i couldn’t stand reading past the first season of it. The only saving grace is that the art can be pleasing to look at…

Oh my god i forgot heartstopper used to be a webtoon and how authors can get their work published i had to stare at the thumbnail
it still is a webtoon, the creator is still posto g new chapters
I find the inconsistencies in the characters in Lore Olympus so infuriating. It makes it so hard to read because you're constantly wondering who is who, especially with persephone. I get that her hair changes and that's quite interesting, but her figure and face shape also change so drastically as well.
i recently watched an opinionpiece on it and before they even said something about it I was like bro do your characters have consistent facial structures? (I'd never seen more than the cover before)
I know it's hard but I'm also not a published author...
The main distingusihing feature is their colour but theres like 3 gray girls amd I cannot tell them apart😅

Right? And the way they loose their interesting body types that they (sort of) had in the beginning. I'm like, just please do some body/height variation!
and everyone having the same everchanging faces surely doesn't help
Like love can you please decide how your character's facial proportions are there are not enough colors for me to differentiate them

big warning, rachel really dislikes criticisms, redraws and edits,
so be careful- hopefully this video doesnt get mass reported and stuff like other videos / posts

I’m kinda a Greek Mythology “purist” so same
Ikr when the time skip happened and heras daughter appeared grown up, I LEGIT THOUGHT IT WAS HERA bc they looked identical, and I was so confused bc HERA was supposed to be in a COMA. It kind of reminds me of a lot of old art deco posters and I love that style.
Yeah, I just wish rachel was more consistent and original with the designs
The only good thing about it lol
@@Aphelia. The designs could definitely use some work, but the inconsistency may be caused by several other artists helping with the comic.
Yanno, cause she's the literal mint _plant?_
I could see her being white or a light pink or lavender because those are the colors of mint flowers, but... not red.
@@SpringStarFangirl The only reason I can think of for her being red was because she needed to be obvious she's terrible. A villain.
(Funny enough, I actually don't think she's the worst. I think *Hades* is arguably the worst person in the whole story)
This discounts how so many of them just look very..similar.

The fact that it was “infamous webtoons” and tapas was used for the scrolling portion of heartstopper is so funny to me
I always love how you come at these redesign challenges with a lot of respect.
Goth being ✨the rizzler✨ in the redesign is hilarious. Good job!
Probably bcuz the authors main inspiration for the comic is BL works which is pretty obvious with how the later stories are written lol
hot take, but if the author was a cisgender man barely anyone would be calling this fetishization.
Isn't Nerd just the author's self-insert?
how can a gay author fetishize his own identity? boyfriends isn't to my taste at all but I cannot help but feel the criticism levied would be much less severe were he a cis man.
@@KARMAZYNANo, goth is.
I think the "problems" on the first page of Lore Olympus are just setting the vibe. I really like it.

Christ alive y'all.]]
The main problems ppl have with Boyfriends that I've seen is: that it's fetishizing gay men and 'written for straight women' and that it's bad representation of gay men and a trans man.... the author is a gay trans man.
Me too 💀 that’s why I stopped reading after like a few episodes, the art is gorgeous but the plot…. 😕

(my whole comment was edited to better say what I meant to)
I think the original makes me feel icky because it feels like the characters have very little personality and each characters is just a stereotype.
I like your version of the Lore Olympus better than the original. It feels more natural than the shots in the actual comic.
Idk about natural. Just more straightforward
as someone whose seen the controversies surrounding boyfriends and lore olympus, its wild that she mentioned it for boyfriends and not lore olympus coz imo the controverssy for lore olympus is way bigger and its criticisms are way worse imo - predatory borderline pedophilic relationships romanticised and persephone changing from kidnapped, raped, manipulated and forced by hades(original source/inspo) into something cute and romantic, which then demonises her grieving mother as hysterical, and all the misogyny rip.
Literally braindead takes all around, that's crazy, it's like you're trying to sound as wrong as possible

Why? Boyfriends is completely worth the criticism.
Wow, honestly the redesign of Boyfriends actually made me want to read that version
If there is going to be a part 2 (which there totally should be!) I would wanna see Jackson’s diary.
JD!! 1’A!1!!1!!!
Hey LavenderTowne, remember when you drew Jacob, Bella, and Edward as how they are described in the book? I was wondering, if you could, maybe draw MORE of the Twilight characters as they are described in the books? It’d be pretty cool to see you draw more characters, if you can and want to, you do you.
you're brave for that title/thumbnail combo
Kinda ironic because I started reading heartstopper a few days ago, and now lavendertowne posts this video! Very talented as usual :)
Felix in the Boyfriends redraw is just that South Park audio “they made [him] emo!”
I loved the way you drew the heartstooper kiss scene. So pretty 😮
heartstopper is one of my favs but i feel like you cant really compare it to the others we have to admit it's on another level
The last rendition is so cute I would totally read a webcomic drawn like that
You are so wholesome, I love it. Keep doing what you're doing and being an amazing artist. Please keep being yourself! You're an awesome cretor, thank you!
I don't know why but I actually love the boyfriends redraw sm 😭
Me toooo my fav character is gosh ( felix)
Hm, these all turned out pretty interesting! I'm gonna be honest, I'm not a fan of the Boyfriends redesign, mostly because the simple and pastel style is part of what drew me to the comic to begin with (though I do like the outfit you gave Goth). This version of it is a lot less eye-catching to me.
The Lore Olympus redesign is so great though, your art style works phenomenally with LO's characters, and I love your redesign of Hades (the nose shape is so good)!! It strikes the balance of simple overall designs and distinguishing features that LO tries for, but doesn't always hit. Also personal thing, but I love that you gave them actual and consistent hairlines, that's like one of my biggest gripes with the LO art style 😭
(I don't know enough about Heartstopper to have a personal opinion on it, but the redesign for it looks great either way!)
Honestly, a lot of your redesigns are a lot better! Especially the one for Boyfriends!
@@felixascends4514 Yeah, those were exacty my thoughts...
Yes and refrainbow was a minor when they drew that...
Thats not even truth,im an ARMY and Jungkook was 19,i dont know why people say he was underage
@@valeriaq4386bro he was underage, and refrainbow was drawing him doing stuffs with namjoon.
It's still weird af to draw nsfw of real people
And refrainbow APOLOGIZED for it.
He has also apologized for other stuff because he is an ADULT and learns and is sorry for mistakes he did as a IGNORANT KID
And i want to add in that Boyfriends/refrainbow haters are always beating a dead horse or grabbing straws🙄
Dude ive been following you for 6+ years and ive always wanted to buy your merch and help support you and comment on your posts but I was never able to make a yt account, I own bith your books at home and I still watch you to this day, thank you for helping me through depression and making my childhood 💗
But like- Boyfriends in your artstyle here looks so appealing now
Congrats on 2MIL!! I have followed your art journey for a while through your vids so I'm so happy to see you getting the recognition you deserve!
I feel like should be an inbetween shot in Lore Olympus of her taking off her outfit, cause it's weird to go from dressed to not in one panel on the same page. Or maybe the panel of her looking at her phone should of been the second panel.
wonderful vid! thank you so much for approaching this positively and respectfully, i genuinely enjoy two of these three comics & it always makes me nervous to see videos abt them since they get trashed on a lot ;w; it genuinely did just feel like you were treating them as studies rather than "fix-it"s and i am all for that vibe 👌
this is such a fun idea tho and now i kinda wanna try it w some of my fave webcomics! it was super neat seeing your versions of these pages & the differences in how you approach comics & visual storytelling vs the original artists. great stuff! 💖
heartstopper in the same category as boyfriends and lore olympus is WILD
your art style goshhhj. it never gets old 😩
I love your Lore Olympus page much more than the original, I wish there was a way to read the full comic in your style 💜
Really interesting to hear your thought process behind these - would love more content like this!
I've actually always really liked the Lore Olympus style the problem is none of the characters body types are consistent or recognizable after a while, I think the artist just got lazy and her story got so popular she had to get more done in less time so the art is worse quality. But I really like how all the characters are one color and the watercolor/lineless style
I love all the originals along with your style too. I love seeing the same thing in different styles. I like seeing how different people view things
tbh I feel like Boyfriends doesnt deserve the hate.
@@blairfujinit's because it's stereotypical and feels like they're making fun of gay people or making weird fetishes out of them
@@RedOmnitrix606RedOmnitrix60 ‘making fetishes of gay people’ the author is literally a gay man?? since when is writing a gay comic as a gay person fetishisation, and not just *being gay???*
amazing!!!! you did amazing with boyfriends and lore olympus!! my top 5 fav web series!! forever amazing!!
YESSS I didn't know how much I needed Lav to draw Lore Olympus fanart 😭
I get not liking something, but the fact that people don’t like it tell the creator, the characters and people that like it to kīll themselves is disgusting.
no it’s just seriously cringe😭 i have read it, and before you call me homophobic i’m gay
If you want to do another one, Nevermore is amazing! Awesome story with gorgeous art. Some of the best backgrounds I’ve ever seen
I love your take on the boyfriends one
This was so fun to watch! It would be cool if you did this again. (Ps ik it’s in a scroll format and not infamous to my knowledge, but I love “I love Yoo” so much and would love to see you redesign it)
I just keep loving your art style more and more with every video and page I see!!! So gorgeous!
The redraw for boyfriends actually looks so good. I'd actually love to read it if it was anything like that.
i need a video with just the little planchette dance it's so cute ❤
i’m glad she remade the comic panels without putting the other artists down, good job!
It bothers me that the haters of the comic act like every child was pure and perfect and never did the wildest of stuff
ew gross
right? the boyfriends hate is so horrible. the creator gets mocked and harassed for no other reason than people think their comic is cringe and jump on every opportunity to harass them. imo the criticism about fetishizing gay men, trans men, and have a boring storyline are super yikes considering the creator is a gay trans man living in a homophobic country. shocking that most of the haters consider themselves allies when they act like this
they made a r4pe comics about the character.

@@IImTheMayori agree
I have seen many videos critiquing Boyfriends and I still don’t get why people hate it. Most of the criticisms are either unreasonable or plain untrue. Its just a cute little story about a polyamorous relationship and their slice of life adventures.
@@palomaroggeri8680the creator is not a good person
@@palomaroggeri8680 it feels like a fetish, on the same level as Yaoi. The ‘nerd’ character in specific seems so much like pedo bait, as a survivor of that shit, it feels so incredibly insulting to watch it be romanticized.
The creator is a Proshipper also, which is frankly disgusting, along with the fact he made NSFW art of a *MINOR/REAL PERSON*.
Overall, the comic is also so dry that i couldn’t stand reading past the first season of it. The only saving grace is that the art can be pleasing to look at…
