      @@brendanmoll4799 exactly, but fortunately in the Xmen movies, we can see that instead of a normal belt, he actually has a canonically stolen prototype of a real device that was unfortunately never put into production, called the ,"stereo-belt", created by Andreas Pavel n 1972. One of the functions of this amazing work of electric-engineering is that it can allow the listener to listen to cassette tapes at higher speeds then the average walkman, able to speed up the music to capabilities of around 1800 times faster at max.

  • @thebagelbomb

    My theory is that Quicksilver can go so fast because he produces a pocket of space-time around him that makes everything within the pocket move way faster than everything outside the pocket. That means that he can, like in X-Men, touch other things and people without instantly destroying them with his crazy speed, therefore acceleration, therefore force. The things he touches enters his bubble and he can interact with them like he and they are standing still, and then when they leave his bubble, they retain their original slowness. If Quicksilver was just moving himself so fast without the bubble, then when, for example, he moved the cop's arm to punch himself with it, that tons of acceleration that Quicksilver moved his arm with would have just ripped it clean off because, as was shown, he moved the cop's arm nearly as fast or faster than a speeding bullet. That also explains why his music is playing super fast. The Walkman is inside of his bubble, so it operates just as fast as Quicksilver can run. That's also why air resistance isn't much of a problem. The air that he runs into enters his space-time bubble and acts just like air at normal speed in relation to Quicksilver, so his hair moves and he needs goggles but the air resistance wouldn't tear him to shreds. Oh, I just realized there might be a problem with this theory. Oh well.

      TOTALLY!!!
      And the bubble/Subtle Smart Skin has membrane layers. One of the superficial layers can store energetic value potentials for all of the laws of conservation at play with a touched object when it was last interacting with its former supper space.
      While he is touching, say a fired bullet, his most superficial bubble layer is responsible for the suspended energy potential of the fired bullet. The energy potetial could just be dancing around in his outer layer, he can't redirect it like Sebastian Shaw, but the energy is intelligently returned once contact is relinquished with the bullet.
      This would be all great if i didn't see him support the necks of people he takes with him while sprinting...

      This also makes sense just because he has to find a way to obtain the oxygen even though when when we breath it sucks the air in so that explains how the air sucks in fast enough to travel all the way to his lungs with no signs of suffocation

    Actually Quicksilver makes a force around himself, it allows things to travel with him when he speeds around. It's why he can move Eric around and he gets sick from the motion, yet when he's not touching anyone when he starts running, they're (semi) frozen in time still.

    If he managed to compress and record the song on 0.05s worth of tape, then the player could be playing at normal speed.

    • @peteradams2063
      @peteradams2063 8 років тому +11

      I think that would be true except for the fact that sound quality (aka resolution) comes in to play. Try taking a digital photograph, reducing it in size by a factor of 1800, and then blowing it back up - it will be pixellated/blurry. You wouldn't be able to compress the song without losing information.

    • @UnwittingSweater
      @UnwittingSweater 8 років тому +34

      True for digital but tapes are analog. The theoretical maximum frequency for an audio tape is about 12 kHz whereas the frequency of a middle C is 440 Hz meaning there is ............ ah ok only a factor of 27.
      So you are right the highest note on that scale is B8 at 7902.13 Hz meaning if you sped up the track anything over 1.51 times then you start to lose resolution at the top end and the higher the multiplier the more notes you will lose.

    Not to be the biggest nerd here... BUT: quicksilver power is not an act of muscular strength, but an adaptation which allows his physical being to increase its vibratory frequency, ams whatever he touches-- not unlike night crawler, Kitty, and others. SO: his clothes, his Walkman,, magneto, whatever, will be sped up, too. So that's why he can hear the music, move people, clothes, etc.

    the only sense of it i can make is that he is operating in a different timeline. Speed is a comparative measurement, we measure speed based either on the constant of the speed of light or an assumed "constant" of the earth, speed is only speed when you have something to compare it to. There are three options;
    1-quicksilver speeds himself up; the problem with that is that his clothes would burn off, his walkman would be unlistenable to etc.
    2-quicksilver slows everything else down - slightly more convincing but difficult to explain how a single person would be powerful enough to slow down time for the entire multiverse, or if it was only locally slowed then wouldn't people report discrepancies.
    3-he seperates himself into a pocket reality where time runs at a different pace than the rest of the world. that way people outside the pocket would experience him moving fast, and people inside the pocket would experience the world as moving slowly, niether are right or wrong they are just comparitive measurements. His walkman is on the inside of the pocket universe. The only problem with this is the wind in his face: that could be written off as stylistic rather than literal, or more convincingly that physical objects (such as wind) can pass through the barrier into the pocket.
    There is a sort of president for this dimentional mucking about in the x men; cyclops gets his eye-beams by importing them from a energy based universe. and nightcrawler can hop himself through space (with his clothes and walkman if he were to carry one) its not too much of a leap to think that quicksilver could hop to a pocket-verse around himself that has a different timeline to ours whilst still interracting with ours.

    One theory I thought about, but I haven't seen it yet, is that maybe Speedsters like Quicksilver and the Flash's power isn't super speed, but rather to slow down time around them, a personal little "Time Bubble" if you will. That would both explain why the Walkman plays normally, and why Eric's organs don't turn into mush, They're both in a relative 'safe area' of the Time Bubble, not enough to see what he sees, but enough to prevent damage. Sure, he holds his head to prevent whiplash, but with the G-forces he receives, he would have had some massive trauma from the 0-whatever acceleration.

    I do have to point out that the movie answers this for us. In the seconds after he puts time back to normal (or starts moving at what is, for him, a super slow speed), we get to hear his cassette player. "Time in a Bottle" is on repeat and we hear it play within a second, sounding like techno instead of the actual song. It's actually played almost every time he's on screen in this way.

    Quicksilver should be the smartest character in the MCU. Everyday could seem like 43200 hours to him so easily enough time for several hundred hours of learning everyday (not that we could take in that much). Also if asked a question with a perceived 0.5 second delay to Quicksilver that would seem like 30 minutes to think about and work out an answer.
    Also you want to extend this even further, if you watch the Quicksilver bullet scene there are times where he is blurred even though you are meant to be following him in his fast state (when moving the two guys guns before stealing the cap).
    This means that he could never listen to a song properly even if he sped it up as he seems to be able to vary his speed meaning the music would alway be too fast or too slow.

    I think Quicksilver's power works more along the lines of accelerating time in close proximity to his body. This could allow him to move around at incredible speeds, but not completely destroy the objects or people that he interacts with while traveling that fast.
    So while the rest of the world experiences only 0.05 secs of time, Quicksilver and anything else in close proximity to him (cloths, walkman, ect.) has experienced 110 seconds of time.

    Speedsters have always intrigued me the most and I've been doing research and calculations of DoFP's Quicksilver's speed for my own pleasure.
    In X-Men: Son of M, Quicksilver himself explained that when he had super speed, he permanently perceives time in slow motion, which game him super reflexes among many other perks, however the downside is that everyday things like queueing, talking, or even waiting for things to just happen is magnified to unbearable slowness.
    It is why he is always frustrated and angry with the world, it's not even his father and being a mutant is giving him a hard time, his powers is curse.

    simpler solution: quicksilver lives in a time bubble outside of our regular time so he can move through our time and interact with full control of his force and speed, which explains how he listens to music because in his bubble the Walkman can play at normal speed relative to him while he and the Walkman both move through our time at super speed. also explains why he doesn't burst into flames and why he doesn't break every single thing he touches while moving super fast.

That added, he would need to be tolerant to burning, as the air molecules would create immense friction against his skin (and clothes). He also would need much more elastic skin, as the movements of running would tear and warp his skin due to the fast rubs. He also would need to have soundproof headphones, as with a regular headset- the sound waves would leech out the sides and the music will seem to get slowly more quiet to him. He also would need to -- oh fuck it.

      Just because it isn't guaranteed we're hearing the same music he's supposed to be listening to, doesn't mean that's what the creators aimed for. They lined it up, because they likely wanted to suggest that the song that the audience is hearing, is the same one Quicksilver is listening to. This was the most probable goal, and it certainly makes more sense than "oh, it happens at the same time, it's just a different song that lines up for no apparent reason."

    2 things
    1. A magnum is a cartridge measurement not the weapon. When you hear a term like 44 magnum it only means the guns chamber is designed to hold the longer cartridge but would not be a magnum itself.
    2. Ive herd a theory that quicksilvers power is not speed but rather a controlled pocket of time dilation making him operate outside the governing body of time with in that pocket. So no special frame rate adjustments or repercussion of Physics would apply.
    Now i know that time dilation would slow him not speed him up but physics dose say for every action there is an equal AND opposite reaction. I think he's power is that opposite in pocket form

    what i really love about the slowmo scene is the one at 0:46 seconds. that guard died right? he's been hit by a relatively small object at supersonic speed. Also if you watch the scene (avialable on youtube), quicksilver then slaps another guard with his whole hand, so much so the guard recoils. Again, at supersonic speed, he should've exploded at that point, instead the movie shows them just get knocked out.

    Spider Robinson wrote a sci-fi short story in which the main character saw things at a higher frame rate, much like you're describing Quicksilver's hearing. This character did tend to perceive time as a sort of "stop motion" in which he could analyze scenes, but he didn't move faster than normal himself.

    I was thinking that Quickisilvers power is not hyper speed so much as warp speed. he causes things to be stationary when he moves in relation to him, but he can move things without affecting trajectory or velocity, which means he is not adding energy to anything. For instance whne he moves the bullets across at hyper speed that would cause a large amount of energy altering the angle of flight, but he just moves it across, which suggests he moved it by warping the space around it, and this of course would also explain how he can listen to music because the walkman would occupy his space/time bubble so while everything else slows down the music would not be affected.

    I think as Quicksilver runs, he's not only increasing his speed, but also fast time moves for him and things he's touching.

    I always always wondered about this too. I'm glad u made the vid Kyle. I also wonder if quicksilver or flash ran across the country would their perception of time feel like they were running for months, even though to us they would seem to get there in a second?? That'd be a boring ass run and you would def need some sped up tunes to pass the time xP

      WarMachine425 I think the idea behind the Flash/Quicksilver power is that they can perceive time as they see fit. They could experience a few milliseconds as an hour OR simply get somewhere fast without paying attention. But you're absolutely right, there has to be some limit on this power, because at some running speed you'd have to slow down the world enough that you don't smash into stuff. There would be some limit. Never thought about it that way, thanks!

      @magnus maybe it's something similar to something moving near light speed. As something approaches light speed it becomes infinitely more dense in mass. Maybe something similar happens to quicksilvers body when he speeds up as well which might protect him

      ***** +warmachine425 But remember the universe we're playing in. Before we can even enjoy our mutant fiction, we have to assume that their bodies can handle the powers bestowed to them. It's not that their world is inconsistent, it's that it's consistent in its disregard for biological limitations, which is the whole point. When I dissect things like this I like to say "bend, but don't break, the universe". Otherwise, yes, Quicksilver could not withstand his own power, but where's the fun in that?

      WarMachine425 Not a bad theory, but the changes in mass and distance that occur at relativistic speeds are only really noticed when you get up to at least half the speed of light or so if I remember correctly from my college physics courses. Long before then some other factor would have to come into play.
      One option that some comic speedsters use is altered time flow, and not just an altered perception of time flow. That is from the speedster's standpoint he's moving at ordinary speeds with ordinary impacts on his legs, but the world is slowed down around him. Water becomes like concrete so he can run on it. It doesn't explain running on a wall and sticking there with centripetal force unless perchance gravity is reduced with the change in time.
      Another explanation used for some speedsters is that they generate some kind of force field that protects them from hitting bugs at the speed of sound and somehow reinforces their body as well.

      Kyle Hill Which begs the question, if you could perceive time in smaller increments, why would you ever choose to perceive it in real time? A conversation could be hours in slow mo time

    couldnt he just listen to a casette thats recorded in 1800 times the normal speed.
    the sound quality would probably be crap tho. (if it could produce any sound at all)

    • @TheFranciscoFm

      +yunthi
      Yes. As well as a video tape you have frames per second. The normal is 24 fps. With the sound is the same (there are
      like reference points or something) But if you record 1 minute of a film (1440 fps) in one second, you are just going to have 24 fps. So if Quick silver watch this second to be like a minute, he is going to see just 24 different frames during this minute. A audio tape wouldnt have the necessary amount of information in one second to reproduce a whole song.

      Francisco .Mora
      thought as much. tho you are thinking digital.
      audio tape is just a magnetic strip, sortof analog. im thinkin the reader wouldnt be able to pick up any signal at all. with all the magnetic information being too close to eachother, canceling eachother out.
      probably.
      more akin to blue red and green colors mixing into white on your screen.

    • @TheFranciscoFm
      @TheFranciscoFm 8 років тому

      Is the same with analogue

    • @yunthi
      @yunthi 8 років тому

      Francisco .Mora thats the difference between a video image and an old audio one.
      on a sidenote i do remember some video recrders being able to record and play at half speed. true you would only get 24fps if you did play a halfspeed recorded one at a normal speed. but thats television. each frame holding the information of each pixel. and the output is converted to 24fps.
      but a casette audio tape doesnt have those limitations. its a magnetic strip, ,and the strip moving under a header that picks up the polarity of that magnetism. and its not ones and zeroes either. the strength can vary as well.
      its reading a magnetic wave, it doesnt have data points but a flowing and changing magnetic field (as far as the reader is concerned). the only actual data point is each molecule in the strip.
      a casette player does not change information to a color on a pixel. it plays it directly. the diaphragm of the speaker moving according to the magnetism in the strip.

    • @TheFranciscoFm
      @TheFranciscoFm 8 років тому

      Dude... you was the one who said first that the sound would be lost. I was with you man.
      I dont know a lot about audio tho. But i know that this magnetic strip has little squares that are the ones that have the information. obviusly there are more than 24 "sounds" per second but it also has limitations.

    Isn't there a comic where it says Quicksilver's talent isn't really speed, but time & gravity distortion? This allows him to move without friction or sonic booms. He can move something without destroying it. Toss people out the window or even jump out himself.

    There is a quick moment at the end of the kitchen scene where he takes off his head phones. In that moment you can hear a high pitched squeal like a hearing aid would make. This maybe hinting that his music is sped up to match his speed.
