I'm doing my first solo album from home as I was made disabled in an accident, doing everything from home has been challenging but fun but the one thing I could never do in my 17 years as a musician is mastering, thanks to you that ain't the case anymore! Thank you so much for your videos mate honestly, my album sounds so much better already and I can't wait to see what the rest sounds like in the end. So you have a new fan & subscriber in me, cheers!
I know I'm a year behind on this. But as a newbie that is understanding how to use GB and Sound Engineering, this series has laid such a great foundation. Thank you for all the time you put into this.
I’m working through an EP right now where all five songs flow seamlessly into each other. I’ve been testing transitions in a separate file with all the WAVs as I’m working. It seems like once I finish mixing I’ll just replace all the rough mix WAVs with the finals and set up that file with the metering in the “master” section. That’s a smart way to work around GB limitations to provide accurate metering one spot. I feel like I have gotten more value out of this channel than damn near anywhere else. Really thankful for what you’re doing.
Bro, the amount of knowledge, useful knowledge you give through this channel and the guide you’d made has been such a great help with recording through GB. Many thanks
When i master a full album, i usually set up a single session for each individual song. Thanks to this video, I'm going to set up one session file for all ten songs. I don't know why I've never thought about this before. Thanks!
I’ve been doing something similar with my music on my iPad for a little over a year now. Of course, there’s certain things I can’t do on the iPad, but I do what I can to get as close to a professional mix as possible.
Thank you ! I'm still learning how to do all this. I have a song that has some loops that go for 50 minutes ! I finally saw that I need to choose the yellow line above to determine the length, so you see where I am in this.
How come I am not seeing the same UV Meter and the Loudness meter after using your links? I basically get the UV Meter but does not look like the one on the screen, its one column with lots of different settings. and get nothing on the Loudness Meter. It shows i have it but the meter you have for loudness does not come up on my screen.
great little tutorial (thankyou) .. i'd been mastering with logic for a couple of years, but was interested to see if garage had the limitations or not to allow mastering to. As i'd recently setup a new machine which comes ith it, i didn't want to go through a long setup process just for mastering only.

Could you use the RMS meter during other phases of the mixing process? For example, after tweaking EQ, use the RMS meter to determine dB lost or gained? Or even for precise compression makeup gain?
Why do you make a new session for mastering, instead of just using the Master controls in the session? Does it give you more options? Or does it just help you focus on one task at a time (so you're not tempted to go back in and do track-level mixing)? Or something else? Thanks.
I’m no expert but it basically helps you focus on the mix as a whole instead of each individual sound in the mix. Since the point is to make the entire song sound good as a whole and sound as one, merging all the tracks into one track in a new session and mastering it helps you focus on what the actual song is going to sound like all together. I see what you mean by doing it all in the original session which is the same question I had, but I noticed putting it all together as one track does indeed help you focus on the actual track as a whole. This is good because the merged, mastered track is the most important since this is what will usually be showcased when you release the song. So basically you are right about it helping you focus on one task, or more of it just helps you focus on the track as one instead of each individual piece which is what you focus on when you mix before getting to the mastering stage. It’s good to keep both the mixing session with each track as well as the mastering session so that you can always go back and alter the mix if you need to because you can always transfer it into the mastering session to help finish it off as the final mix, hope this helps!
@entropone I had the same question. It is no big deal but why have a separate session as opposed to bouncing down the entire mix to a two-track stereo mix on a separate track in the same session. Maybe just for organizational purposes?
hi there, Im just starting this mastering journey and I'm finding that the RMS you have pictured is not available. Is there another one I should be using?
Hi. I downloaded the mvMeter as suggested but only get in Factory Presets one option: Pres 0 Init, so cannot get RMS. Also there is no content to load (i.e. presents) and neither is there the three lines option next to the selection in the centre. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance
Are you using a new computer? I ran into this same problem when using a new Macbook, and I downloaded the other MV2 meter (mvMeter2nog) and that one works with the new Mac. Not sure why that all happened, but thankfully there was a work-around.
@@MatthewFlanagan-ts6pz Hi there. I ran into the same problem, with the factory presets. What do I do? Where can I find the other mv2 meter? thank you.
Hey, Colin. I finished a song today but when I mastered it and exported it, the volume is low on Apple Music when I know I increased the volume inside the project. Any idea on how to overcome this? Thx!
Colin, so I’ve mastered my first few tracks and up until now, no problem. I export to my desktop and it sounds fine but missing the first bar of the intro. Tried it a few times with same result. What am I doing wrong? “The Band Guide’ has been a saviour by the way.
Sorry I’m confused from your other video. So do I use the master controls while I mix which is what I thought you said or no and export first then use the master controls?
I'm trying to master some tracks - but whenever I export them from the mixer (whether as aiff or mp3, or wav) they're greyed out when I try to drag them back into a new project for mastering ??

I know and appreciate and respect how great this information is, but it's still way too complicated for me. Is there an easy way to master one song so that it sounds good through a wedding DJ's system? By this I mean, can't I just use the built-in MIXING tool (for GarageBand on a Mac) and then bring THAT back into a New Project window and set some sort of easy peasy thing? Thank you for any help anyone can give me that is simple. I'm not good at all of this technical stuff like the rest of you are. I have written music for 40+ years and can play multiple instruments but the rest is just too much for me. I just need an easy way to render the final song and give it away as an mp3. Any help with this would be SO VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.
