I've just watched everything that came up from searching "eq on GarageBand". This was the best tutorial, well-paced, detailed enough to find a place to start, simple enough for me to understand and with good clear comparisons between EQ on and off - helps me know what I'm listening for. Great work. I would definitely subscribe except I already did.
The dry mix/ static mix is well balanced out of the gate. The kick is right where you want it in the sub 100hz region. The snare clearly has it's own oomph space around 200hz and there's clear separation between the low end thump of the kick and the thump of the snare. There's already a dip in the mud area. So basically it's very well recorded and looks like it adheres to the characteristics of a well balanced song BEFORE any actual mixing begins. Makes things easier. Many home studio recordings on the other hand are a nightmare combo of weak kick, insane mud, harsh highs etc.
That was incredibly useful. Thank you for demystifying the EQ process and providing lots of handy tips along the way. It seems like I could learn a lot from you!
Very helpful. Have been trying to figure out the Jazzmaster points that I want to accentuate on a new song I am currently working on. Thank you for the help.
Hi Colin, Great tutorial thank you for sharing! Question, after I applied E.Q, my volume is going over the peak -3 . should I adjust volume, gain or E.Q to solve this problem? best J
Fantastic series! One thing i've noticed throughout all these videos is that the lead vocal is pumping a lot. It's especially apparent on the pre-chorus, where it sounds like "blank-my worth- nice apartment-mumble mumble..." To me, the main electric guitar power chords are washing out that lead vocal a lot. I'm curious by the time i get to the end of the video if that improves!
My primary purpose is to record instrumentals for personal use (not for sale). I will only be using GarageBand’s digital instruments through my midi keyboard. Would I still have to do a lot of EQ/ post production of my work?
how does the copyright system works? im asking about its boundaries because I made a song that is inspired by another song. i copied the structure but i didn't mean to copy the key. I have my own tone tho it sounds similar and i have composed everything aside from the structure. does this mean that i copied the song? and am i able to take credit from it as long as i say that the song was an inspiration from another song?
My computer is getting old so I am not getting updates on Garageband.....noticed the adjustments on the Q with the shaded area. Is this new? Besides having a mouse with a wheel.....
Colin, I have a question but first context: in this tutorial, when you spot ''a little woofiness in the kick drum', you begin your search to identify it in the upper frequencies (2-3k, pale blue circle) but then move that little circle leftwards to fine-tune in the lower frequencies. You then solve the problem IN the lower frequencies but still using the pale blue circle/shading from the upper ones. My question is: if the problem and solution are in the lower frequencies, why 'find' it using the little pale blue circle from the upper frequencies, i.e. why not find/solve the problem in the lower frequencies only?
That’s a GREAT question! I was only searching in the low frequencies, but I’d already used both EQ bells from that area, so I had to pull the point from the upper frequencies down to that area.
@@TheBandGuide Good morning Colin. In case all the points have been used up, then to get our job done, can we add another EQ to the plugin chain and get fish points to tackle the problem?

The drums are a Midi track, fyi. That helps a lot since the samples GB uses are really good quality.
My 80s Providence RI band was "The Ultimate Garage Band"!
Thank you so much, mixing my first song and your tutorials are so helpful. On to compression!!
I started with presets, but since I've been watching your videos I'm EQing everything myself.
🙌🏼 exactly what I love to hear!
PS you are inspiring me to spend more time on EQ...thanks
🙌🏼🙌🏼 I’m glad! Everyone needs EQ in their life
Great tutorial Colin, thank you. Among many helpful tips, I like how you EQ the backing vox a little differently to the main vox.
Glad it was helpful, Mike!

Fantastic help here!.... I'm hoping that these tips are going to breathe life into my compositions.... You'll be the first to know 💪🏼😎.... Thank you
Nice mix be careful with the EQ good video
Great walkthrough! Presets is ok for individual sound like a guitar sometimes but I never use them in a mix. Thanks Boss! 👍

This is a great channel and has helped me heaps. I'll be sure to credit you when I'm famous 😂
What head phones do you use for mixing?
It’s all in the “ what gear to you need “ video part 6 I think
So why is it exactly you do everything from inside Logic or garageband? Like do you get paid to do it through them as a teacher?

Are you saying to EQ drums on a bus from the very beginning?
Can you make a video doing this in logic with real drums

I’m not sure how new it is! I’ve had it for over a year now I think
I'm working with garage band 5.0 basic on an 09 Imac.

noticed the difference on computer speakers....
Good!
After learning these skills I wish I could get my hands on some full stems from bands I like that have subpar mixes (like Metallica).
After reading your post, Metallica might like to get their hands on you.
@@Moykel fan remixes that are balanced makes them sound even better.
😂 love this convo! I’d love to hear one of those mixes!
@@TheBandGuide Metallica sounds amazing with bass and well mixed drums.
