How St. Benedict Created the Modern World

- Benedict of Nursia created a "guidebook" on monasticism. His rules led to the widespread proliferation of scientific study, formalized education, and hospitality for the sick/injured which developed into institutions that are still fundamental to society today.

Please note dear readers that these were Catholic monks.
im pretty sure only catholics have monks like that
Catholicism was the only recognized Christian religion in that time. The Reformation was still some hundreds of years in the future - 1521.
Christian monasticism began in Egypt. It was practiced mostly by hermits living in the desert.
Orthodox churches continued the monastic traditions.
St. Anthony became the first well known of these monks after St. Athanasius wrote about him.
St. Pachomius preceded St. Anthony.
Prior to Christianity the Jews had religious groups that withdrew to the desert like the Essenes and St. John the Baptist.
Yes, indeed. The entire West was that way until some unruly German princess with printing presses published a priest’s writings without his knowledge.
Only believers have eternal life. He that believes and is baptized will be forgiven Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ will be forgiven and healed and have eternal life with Jesus forevermore in Paradise
I live in Europa and had the great luck of having two uncle's who were Monks (Trappist and Benedictine). They always said: do not think the Monastery is a paradise, life is hard and challenging. Nothing romantic. But what I learned most of them? That money, luxury, travelling, TV, computers and so on do not make lucky in life. I learned the rule from them: work and pray. Now retired from work, I still do my own work and prayer on a daily base, as I have done in all my life. I can only say: get a copy of the book the Rule of Saint Benedict, and read in it daily. And pray. Will make you happy, and rethink many things in your life about what is important and what not.
And Thomas Merton said when he entered the monastery he saw "the walls of my freedom". Same idea, different way of wording it.
Only tiny little detail on work and pray, it's: pray and work. Ora et labora. Pray first.
We ourselves are exhorted in ordinary life to follow continual prayer, rejoicing and thanking through the day, calling on to live in His presence and do the will of Our Heavenly Father.
When I think such people literally kept books alive through the ages by coping them by hand.
My grandmother is from Fulda, one of the German monasteries with the largest collections of preserved texts...I'd like to think if I look far enough back one or two of my ancestors were a part of all that! :)
A monk (Gregor Mendel) even kickstarted the science of genetics in 19th century Austria -Hungary -by experimenting with peas in the monastery gardens. And all the beers and liqueurs produced by monks!
Lol, Mendel was the nazi Dr as well, wasn't it? That exprimented on people
Unfortunately it seems that today the intelligentsia is almost dead in the Church.

Excellent video! For a more detailed treatment, please see the book "How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization" by Dr Thomas Woods.
That is a great book.
Yes! I read it and it is really informative. It kind of shocks me that there are not 100 similar books on the same subject that should have been written over the past century. It's almost as if "big publishing" has not wanted anything positive to get out about the Catholic Church.... 🤔
That is a great book!
On the backs of native American slaves 😢
The Western civilization precedes the Catholic Church.
Absolutely correct. There were Benedictine monasteries all over Europe which were the birth of culture. Today there is a flourishing traditional Benedictine monastery with the traditional Latin Mass and Divine Office and also including nuns who live near Silver City New Mexico.

2:54 -- Let's not forget St. Pachomius the Great ( c. 292 - 9 May 348 AD) who was the first to set down a monastic rule, and the founder of Christian cenobitic (collective) monasticism. St. Basil's rule was based on that of St. Pachomius, and it was this already established practice that St. John Cassian transmitted to western Europe.
Excellent video - Benedictine monks of all nations, backgrounds and races have done much great work for their communities around the world.
Oh little one's how we have forgotten 😇 Thanks from old New Orleans 😇
This is great information to have at hand when people claim that the west does not depend on christian values. The very continuity of civilization depended on the dedication of those who worshiped Christ.
The Eucharist manifests Himself so profoundly, some want only God.

Ok, did you know Saint Benedict got his rule from The Great Saint Antony of Egypt ?

A remarkable man of his time
It is a good thing to think about and talk about. Some of us may even practise his rule.
Well presented and a excellent video! Totally enjoyed it and was refreshing
This practice is still done in traditional Benedictine monasteries around the world, such as Clear Creek Abbey (OK), Fontgombault (FR), La Barroux (FR) Our Lady of Guadalupe (NM) Nursia (IT)
I lived this life strictly for a month at Clear Creek, where the Latin mass is offered every day after the office of Terce.
The best ideas come when performing tasks.
You can visit a traditional monastery exactly like this in Oklahoma at Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey

WE NEED THIS NOW
As a devout Protestant, I deeply appreciate this sincere, hard-working forebear. Would that we (as a society) adhered more to 'Ora et Labora'.
As Protestants, our tradition is more deeply rooted in this medieval and ancient heritage than the Papists (cf. Matthew Barrett, _The Reformation As Renewal_ ).
@@fiery_hunter3271 Is that so? Well now I know. /a papist
@@fiery_hunter3271 That's a wild claim though. We have many active Benedictine monasteries, and laymen actively practicing those disciplines to this day. Moreover, Benedictines are Catholics, and your identity as a protestant is entirely based on a rejection of the authority of the Church in favor of that of the likes of Luther and Calvin.
@@AluminiumT6 It's been the claim of the Reformers since the beginning. There were schismatic groups, certainly (e.g. Anabaptists and many Baptists), but William Perkins, Luther, Calvin, etc. saw themselves as faithful continuation of the Church, while the Rome had fallen away from the True, Holy, Catholic Church. As a Protestant, I see myself and my brothers as true Catholics. See Perkins: _A Reformed Catholic_ , and my source cited above, namely Matthew Barrett: _The Reformation As Renewal_ .

To the point and accurate!
I suspect that a big part of the knowledge sharing was made possible by the networks created by the pilgrimage routes and their ties to the Cluny Abbey. Not only the rule (and the proto democratic principles that can be extrapolated from it) but also information translated into Latin from Arabic, Hebrew, ect traveled along these routes. Great video-- we truly do owe St. Benedict a great debt.
There is a great benedictine school in the Philippines: San Beda College.

The Bible encourages us to go and make disciples, not to gather away from the world. Of course, there are good and bad results. I like the example of Monks creating the "Mission Trail" in San Antonio, TX. They started at the Alamo and worked their way each seven miles, establishing a mission. Their goal was to witness to the native Americans.
It would be interesting, in a subsequent video, to explore the proliferation of orders, and also their corruption, and how they came to be tools for imperialism when piety married governmental power. I had the pleasure of visiting Monte Cassino with friends a number of years ago, on a day trip from Rome. Beautiful rose garden there. And a chapel that held the only portrait of St. Francis done of him when he was present (or so we were told).
Benedict’s way has urprising similarities with Gautama Buddha’s Middle Way and the chanting and work-oriented Theravada monasteries he inspired across south-east Asia.
Awesome maybe the way of the future simplicity and contemplation of the living God peace let it be

Irish monk St Colmbanus had as much impact on the spread of christianity in Europe as did St Benedict.
The celebrated science/speculative fiction novel Canticle for Leibowitz is about a group of cloistered Benedictines trying to preserve the tenets of civilization after devastating nuclear war. Though a work of fiction, I have no doubt if the Order preserved civilization before, with God's grace they will certainly do it again.
What about Boethius & Cassiodorus.
Personally I find this acceptable as something temporary since putting faith in such schedule is not putting faith in Jesus, however I can see how it can be a good way to brake with many attachments and negating oneself
Very based, many are saying this!
Saint Pachomius the Great, in 300 AD is generally recognized as the founder of Christian cenobitic monasticism.
However Cenobitic monasticism was introduced in the West by St. Benedict of Nursia in 529 AD and became the norm of the Benedictine order
It's Saint Anthony The Great of Egypt that is seen as first founder of monasticism and to whom Saint Benedict based his rule on.
@@OutWestRedDirt Saint Anthony was a solitary monk .. Community monastic was by Pachomios .. both were coptic oriental orthodox desert fathers.
The Coptics schism did not occure until 451AD. Way after St. Anthony the first Hermit & St. Pachomius founded the first cenobitic monastery. They were Christians.@@joshuacherian6718

Incidentally, Trappists is another name for the Cistercians. They are not two separate orders.
There is an old saying which goes, 'there is nothing more poor than a Trappist monk'. Trappist was a name used for Cistercian monks.
Actually the Trappists (OSCO) were originally a subset of the Cistercian order.
I believe they parted ranks and are now a separate order. So there are now two types of Cistercian orders: the Common Observance (O. CIist.) which less common and the Trappists.
The Trappists are a seperate order from the Cistercians, starting as a reform there of. Trappists are canonically seperate.
@@asdinniewe have a monastery of Cistercians of the Common Observance in Monterey County, California. They are Vietnamese.
Thank you. I had the thought, due to your wonderful presentation, that the Benedictine system may be an answer to the coming crisis of depopulation. It built Western Civilization once, it could help rebuild it.

Not only Catholic monks but Orthodox monks work exactly like this and also they hold the copying of ancient scripts and the science development of the eastern roman empire also a lot of them which fled(after 1453) to the Italian peninsula are responsible for the start of the renaissance
And finally the monks and priests learned the Children to read and write the Greek language and kept it alive till today

The dark ages are defined by the feudalistic rule of Charlemagne after his invention of Catholicism in the 9th century an imposed serfdom on the local populaces of what might be best referred to as Proto-Othodox Christians.
