Some ranges don’t allow steel core ammo, and SS-109 ammo from European sources doesn’t have the green tip because they never used the M-193 55 gr ammo. That ammo attracts magnets and has the NATO cross in a circle on the head stamp. Don’t try to sneak in any at ranges that don’t allow M855. Have heard of RSOs checking ammo w magnets before you get to shoot. Winchester makes 62 gr without the steel core for ranges like that.

regular 5.56 is 55 grain fmj full lead core optional boat tail.
Green tip M855/SS109 is a 62 grain mild steel tipped lead core fmj with a boat tail. The steel and heavier grain gives better penetration and energy retention through soft barriers ( wood, cloth, drywall, foliage) than its 55 grain counterpart

But most hood people use 10 inch barrels n under so there's not much oomf to bust an armor plate your basically at 9mm energy at that point

Having a steel penetrator doesn't necessarily mean it is M855.
There are many foreign manufacturers using the SS109 projectile designed by FN, the same projectile design used in M855, but may not follow the other specifications for the M855 cartridge.
Yeah, its a bit of nitpicking, but if someone is trying to charge you a premium for M855 it had better be coming from Lake City, or it's not real M855. (But just buy M193, it is cheaper and an all around a better performer)

Dude, unless you bought some sketchy stuff in a ziplock bag from a flea market, all that commercially bought or surplus stuff will be real. No big ammo company will risk their reputation selling fake stuff. Namely because its too easy to check or notice it being m193 or m855. It hits different, flys different, ones magnetic, etc.
Im saying trust what you bought at the store and only use store bought ammo and youll be fine.

This is a great video because its so simple and just common sense that if you have true M855 ammo it has a Steel core and a Copper jacket and this makes it magnetic while regular ammunition is just Lead core with a Copper jacket and is not magnetic but I guarantee most people would never think to use a magnet to separate mixed ammo. This is second nature for seasoned shooters but its not to new shooter and this video will hopefully reach the eyes of those who need it. This is the true embodiment of K.I.S.S. 😂

by reading the comments, you can tell who the noobs are. cant believe m855 is even a topic of discussion anymore. spend less time here and more on the range.

Stick with quality manufacturers and you're not going to have to worry about this. If you go out and buy some cheap imported bullshit then yes I would recommend putting a magnet to them. Stick with American made and this should not be a problem. But I'm also going to tell you right now... Most people in the civilian world aren't wearing level 4 plates so green tip has no advantage over even a 223. And that's a fact. The only advantage of 556 has over the 223 is a slightly flatter faster trajectory and that's only going to matter if you're out at like 800 yards which most people are incapable of shooting out to. And the m855 is highly overrated. If you can't do it with the m193 there's a overwhelming chance you're not going to do it with the m855 green tip either. But you're going to spend a hell of a lot more money
