Green tips have steel cores. Paint is just to tell the difference so soldiers grab the right shit. Steel cores are for 1:8 or 1:9 twist and newer ar style rifles.
Some ranges don’t allow steel core ammo, and SS-109 ammo from European sources doesn’t have the green tip because they never used the M-193 55 gr ammo. That ammo attracts magnets and has the NATO cross in a circle on the head stamp. Don’t try to sneak in any at ranges that don’t allow M855. Have heard of RSOs checking ammo w magnets before you get to shoot. Winchester makes 62 gr without the steel core for ranges like that.
regular 5.56 is 55 grain fmj full lead core optional boat tail. Green tip M855/SS109 is a 62 grain mild steel tipped lead core fmj with a boat tail. The steel and heavier grain gives better penetration and energy retention through soft barriers ( wood, cloth, drywall, foliage) than its 55 grain counterpart
Not really most cops and people use lvl 4 watch some armor plate reviews and you'll see what I mean honestly 55gr has a better chance at busting an armor plate just because of velocities. But most hood people use 10 inch barrels n under so there's not much oomf to bust an armor plate your basically at 9mm energy at that point
All brass is annealed as part of the manufacturing process. Military cartridges usually require that the brass does not get polished to provide for visual inspections
Having a steel penetrator doesn't necessarily mean it is M855. There are many foreign manufacturers using the SS109 projectile designed by FN, the same projectile design used in M855, but may not follow the other specifications for the M855 cartridge. Yeah, its a bit of nitpicking, but if someone is trying to charge you a premium for M855 it had better be coming from Lake City, or it's not real M855. (But just buy M193, it is cheaper and an all around a better performer)
