Dead by Daylight has released on June 14th 2016 and it has evolved quite a bit over the years, in this video we'll be taken a trip down memory lane with some old friends and explore how the game felt in its early days.
Starting with the first released version on dead by daylight and then later on 1.9 which released in 2018, I hope you enjoy

The fact you can even do this is honestly awesome. It's incredible the game had the popularity it did despite how poorly balanced the game actually was.
back then survivors weren't aware of looping, so it was actually played as if killers had advantage.
alot of hiding, lack of efficiency. the lack of balance wasn't as quite aparrent for the overwhelming majority
Well when it first released looping wasn’t a thing. DbD was a completely different play style back then. It was originally envisioned and played as a hide and seek style game, not a chase game. Getting chased by a killer was basically considered as already messing up as a survivor. That’s why the fog to be so much thicker, survivors were told the proper way to play was to sneak and crouch and stealth. It wasn’t until people realized how strong looping was that the game started to be balanced around that play style instead.
Still poorly balanced lol
It's miles better than this, and miles better than three years ago. Sadly this game is turning into league of legends. There's no way to balance everything around everything that's in the game. You can add more things to break it, but balance can't be made. @@jebus56162
@@PunkySlushi remember the first release we were all inside lockers no one was doing gens, good fkn times😂😂 we thought killers were op and scary😂😂😂
From a graphics perspective it looks worse, but from an visual design perspective I think it looks a lot better. I genuinely prefer the look of old dbd much more, I understand why they changed it but it really lost something special in its visuals when they did. A step to making this better in current dbd is adding grass. Please add more grass. I love grass.
Found the Trapper Main
Need the grass to hide in, as Tiff
Goes to show that graphical fidelity isn't nearly as important as art direction when it comes to how good a game looks
@@squibbles_yeah old dbd was very vibrant and expressive despite the fact that the color palette was a lot darker. new dbd looks bland in comparison
But gamers hate grass :x
Old Freddy is so unique, they should bring him to the game again, this sleep mechanic at least
absolutely not, he was dogshit to play as and against
God, no, it's such a huge nerf for him, and he's already mediocre now, I don't imagine back then
@@cheesecakedefresa7769 they just need to modernize the power and make it more viable, he could be rly unique and fun.
@@Daddix0 You cannot modernize the ability to make yourself unhittable by the Killer, and them needing to keep repeatedly reapplying the effect whilst not having any anti-loop. Freddy was already nerfed on launch because of slugging, and that was removed.
Maybe try actually looking at videos of Freddy instead of dying on this foolish "FREDDY WAS UNIQUE, GO BACKWARS NOWWWW!!!1" train.
It would pretty much need dream world to apply constant expose at the very least to make it worth it to not be able to do anything against genrushing for a good while
I can't believe that Killers actually survive those days it was so hard 😂😭
They were the real survivors 😭
back then it was very easy for them actually cause looping wasn't a thing yet. Stealth was the name of the game for Survivors
@@avocadothecat Looping most definitely existed lmao
@@arandomperson401in 2016 hardly anyone looped ever it wasnt until 2017 where people actually started to figure allat out
personal experience aint everyones experience@@h_exterm2779
Old dbd was so eerie and atmospheric. I miss these days.
It wouldn’t work with the current killers in the game. Also the old graphics look like shit.
@@jackbruno953
It's not about the graphics, it's about the art design of the maps and their atmosphere.
I think old DBD has it's charm, and yes it was very atmospheric in it's own way cause all maps, or almost all, were based on the concept of a dark, foggy forest where you should hide to survive.
New DBD has wonderful, beautiful and also atmospheric maps and graphics, it's more realistic too, but it's a lot about action and running away from the main threat and being chased in many different places and worlds, not about hiding in a foggy forest.
@@Libellulaire Exactly, I loved how dark and scary the maps felt
Don't forget, you could permanently sabotage hooks.
And destroy traps
It's almost like the devs weren't thinking at all
This video ended too quickly!! Would love to see more of this, was so much fun to watch❤
Maybe we will do a part 2
@@hens333im sure we'd all love to see it!
@@hens333Please do!
Old DBD as a killer was scary and I never want to go back. Facing survivors with 4 deadhards, 4 unbreakables, 4 decisive strikes STILL gives me PTSD 😢
"DBD is a horror game."
"As a survivor, right?"
🪤🔕🔨
"...as a survivor, right?"
@@thewatcherinthecloud lmao! Yeah I get it it’s supposed to be scary to survivors, but it was scarier to be a killer when all those perks were META. It felt like you couldn’t do ANYTHING without being punished 🤣
Let's not forget blendette and The Game maps lower level. It was pitch black and you couldn't find anyone😂😂
@@DanAltieri I feel like an old man now! Because these new players don’t understand how bad old Gideon was. Back when breaking pallets took like 5 seconds???? ONG PAIN!!!
@@WestDBD Right!! Or what about back when there was 2 gens remaining and the hatch would spawn in. Then everyone is running keys and a hatch @ killer shack offering. I was SO happy to see that go away.
Dang this brings back memories. I started playing way back when but stopped because survivor gave me such anxiety. I came back during the 6th anniversary and put in 1000 hours. Safe to say only Mikey scares me these days hahaha.
The hatch spawned after gens done was equal to +1 of survivors alive. In the earlier versions you could hear where the hatch was before it spawned too!
The game is so much more atmospheric. I wish the current version felt like this.
We still hear creators and developers say "see you in the fog" but there is pretty much no fog left in the game.
It was
The fog+lighting make it look so much better than current dbd 😢
The maps were so cool and creepy back then. I wish they'd re-release the old maps but with current day balancing.
Honestly they can still somewhat give it the same atmosphere if they give it more fog and change the lighting
Man, watching this made me realise how much I miss the darkness of the old McMillan and Farm maps.
I remember when Freddy came out, spine chill was clutch because it triggered more skill checks which allowed you to escape the dream world (by missing the check). Also, borrowed time wouldn’t work unless the person saving was awake because there was no heartbeat.
i was able to play the game on his first week. I still remember those versions with nostalgia. DBD has become something else than a game for me, it was with me all my way through highschool on 2016 up to 2020.
I started playing on Independence Day 2nd July 2016 and it's good to see the old version. Often dreamed about going back to those fun old days! :)
This was a great video! Would you revisit it in a more “competitive” way? It would be interesting to see the old meta builds in play with the new techniques that people have picked up. Im surprised we didn’t see things like the old BNP or machine gun build or recreating the old glitches such as meyers with a chainsaw. Or even the old insta blinds! Thanks for the content!
Great video. Very nostalgic. Have to send this to the friend who said survivor is the easiest it has ever been. He started in 2020.
perma invis wraith is probably the scariest killer ever lol
i miss the old atmosphere so much, it's so much closer to a horror movie
This is a hilarious video, would love to see more like this.
I remember this days, its honeslty a miracle the game has come this far. Really makes you think how the genre has evolved, and how good the new asymetrical games really are (and they still die quickly)
As for dying quickly. I think it’s cause people just give up on them too easily/quickly. All games generally come out buggy and with problems these days. But then devs are slow to fix/do anything and just see dropping numbers and give up.
DBD as seen here clearly has done *TONS* of work code the years to what it is now. They actually kept at it and didn’t give up and people have stuck around.
Least that’s my line of thought. If devs actually put in work to balance and fix up their games and kept up with the communities they wouldn’t die.
@@Forbiddensirenz @Forbiddensirenz I agree. But I also think that maybe the reason people give up too soon is because we tend to compare (unintentionally) every game of the genre with dbd, and we expect new games to be completely fair and polished. Ignoring that even dbd started in a worse state than some games these days.
The moral of the story: Dont give up on a game/project that you enjoy/believe, whether you are a developer, or part of a small community of players. But I understand it must be frustrating for both sides and it is a long process. (And maybe even expensive)
would love to see more of this
I found out about the community a few months ago, but no big content creator really showcased it ever, but now its out there perhaps those videos wiill get more attention
I miss how dark this game was. Felt like an actual horror game back then ❤
That was a blast from the past man those where good times
Love the content, keep going!
It feels weird seeing this. Even tho I didn’t start playing dbd until late 2018, it’s kinda crazy having been around when shit like hex ruin was the tough, and the ds/dead hard meta was so scuffed to go against
I think they did a pretty good job so far
Dude, this video make me laugh as f... so funny!
I kind of want to see what a dark and misty/foggy map would be like with Dredge against a good team, but I get the feeling I already know what that would look like. Still, can't deny how ominous the atmosphere in the old version was.
I remember trying out the medium vault patch with my friends in high school 😭
old dbd, as unbalanced as it was, will always have a special place in my heart
this is where i start love dbd
also 1.8.0 version have released freddy and halloween event
Game looked so good back then.
poah i still want to play old school dbd it was so good then. now there is just to much going on just the basic things i loved
RIP old dbd
So we all prefer the old look of the game it seems. This should be a setting or random affect with the map to bring back that look
Kudos for the people that made this possible
yeah, I vividly remember a game against a claudette with all the darkest cosmetics available at that point on "the game".
that map was SO fucking dark in some places on the lower level, claudette was literally invisible. It was an absolute pain in the butt.
Hens, I genuinely love you.
Thank you, that's all.
Can this be a "new" game mode😅
I was thinking this as well, justs having an unbalanced mess as a gamemode that would work in the same way custom games work would be so great. It might be too hard for them to do though with the spaghetti code
Be cool but to much wishful thinking for me
I'm happily surprised Otz saw the value of the range addons! I remember me and a few other Freddy players insisting they were good only to get laughed at because the block addons existed.
Damn this brings back memories
This looks great. They really did change the whole mood of the game. The balance changes are good and I get making the game more readable, but they really went the complete opposite direction with the design. After seeing this I do wish things were more like the old days, color and style at least. Getting rid of the moonlight offerings and using less actual black in the color palette should have been enough, especially with how much aura reading is in the game now.
Also the whole dreamworld Freddy thing is so cool. Such a shame they didn't figure out a way to keep him invisible to people who are awake.
anyone who actually played this will tell you it was awful
let me tell you, it was awful, so was Freddy
@@Killerbot23 I'm not saying it wasn't, I just think they over corrected.
The atmosphere not being as scary anymore is personal preference, and I think they could have mitigated visibility issues in other ways then just making things bright and adding more saturated colors to the levels. Even just removing the moonlight offerings and making the survivors brighter in general would have done so much.
Freddy being invisible when you're awake was just cool though, seeing him carry survivors was like straight out of the movies, but I'd never claim that would be easy to implement. I'm not a dev though, and I'm not going to say that they didn't try. They tried basically every different way to do Chucky's POV before settling on doing it 3rd person, so that's a good indication of how thorough they can be.
I remember blinding old Freddy twice not in dream state. Here's to all those OG's who could blindly flashlight without needing to see him. There was a way to tell which way he was facing based on the butt of the downed survivor.
I think we are doing a pretty good job so far
damn, we couldnt see freddy walking his dog in this video, i miss those days slightly
still miss old running animations fr
I played this game when pyramid head came out but I can tell veteran killers had ptsd playing this lol
I would love a legacy game mode. Or maybe just a legacy event to remember the weird times
The amount of times i got abused on that coal tower main building was painful i did not want to see that again
2018 dbd was the peak for me.
Some old billy things that weren't covered in that first game with him:
1. Old turning was just a flat multiplier on sensitivity (if I'm recalling correctly), so if you cranked up the sensitivity you could do some silly shit
2. at the end of a chainsaw, you could flick to either side and hit survivors next to you quite easily
God old dbd was so good, would give anything to go back.
I really wanted to see the cow tree abuse with the two vaults on the long wall with the tree in the middle
Am i the only one who would KILL to have this dark and creepy atmosphere and the hide and seek / stealth gamestyle back??
Likeeee 😭 this is why i started playing DBD! Killers and maps were ACTUALLY scary and made you feel like the last thing you wanted was to get caught walking around. I fucking hate looping, the chase mechanic, and how freaking colorful and fog-less the game is today.... everything is based around movement and the perks you bring.. it's so soul-less and like every other game out there...
like Behaviour if i wanted to play Fortnite i would 😭
Thanks for reminding me why I stopped playing this game after the beta dropped and didn't pick it up til 2023.
oh man I remeber these versions of dbd..The good ol' days..the king of loops was No0b3 and trolling was sooo huge from the survivors... Good times!
2018 were the days :( I remember I was so terrified of Freddy and Clown!
The ping difference made it that much better 😂😂
you should really start putting in music credits, cause they start of that freddy match that beat was a bop. but if i want to find it i have to beg in comments, or look for someone who posted it
Holy shit my Shazam actually found it in the last second. It´s Rock Solid by Mother´s madness
I miss this Freddy had was so cool but a lot of stuff needed work
Old ahhh looking game 😂 damn what a time to play this game…
Yeah gonna be real the old falling asleep was super cool and matched Freddy a lot better. I almost feel like this version could work in the modern game if they do a few changes.
Im surprised nobody ran the sprint burst into balanced landing combo . I remember when the cool down for those perks were just individual timers all whild bloodlust didnt exist 😭, rough times for killer
All I keep thinking about is Deathgarden.
I hope this video will allow dbd 1.0.0 to come to life and I will have someone to play
This almost makes me feel ashamed I only started playing in 2020 😳
that guy better be here.
This is the game i loved and miss :(
I was there Gandalf… I was there when you had to spam press space key in the right way so you didn’t die on hook
Old Freddy is way more lore accurate. I like how you can’t see him when you’re awake.
I started 2018 - damn that was long ago
I wish they brought back the atmosphere of old dbd
I forgot survivors used to limp. It looks ridiculous now lol
How'd you guys get to play the old version of the game? Is there a way to access the old patches somehow?
Playing a couple moon bouquets and playing dark clothes Claudette is still evil af
This should’ve been the new game mode they came out with
nostalgic! wasn't the lunge pretty much non-existant, too? 🤔
How is that even possible? But God that is nostalgic
You can play most old versions of the game but it's a painful process to set it up and you can only do customs
its absolutely not painful and its so much fun!
I get that BHVR was much smaller back then but some if these issues are so obvious idk how they shipped to main 😂

Hey RU community, i wasn't the only one who thought this was the "Крысиные бега" song begining here, right?
dude the game looked so much better wtf?!?! the fog and the enviroment fells so much better than what we have now wtf
I'm suprised to this day, that game didn't died in first year.
Most old DBD content I remember watching was custom games with encylopedia of man made rules. No BNP/Moris/traping hooks/destroying traps or hooks/ don't abuse infinites/ no face camp and so much more.
I don't agree with common misconception now, that people didn't knew how to loop. Sure more people was playing stealthy back then, but you will still get people who will just run to infinites or pallet vacuum.
give me back old freddy idc if i lose 30 times in a row
But like how? I have watched the whole video twice just to make sure I haven't missed the steps I have to follow in order to try this myself again
I remember specifically avoiding tunneling and slugging because of unbreakable and DS lmao
I miss old Farm maps :(
Hens and his evil laugh is priceless
The Blendette is crazy though. Actually can barely see her even from your own perspective.
I miss old Freddy he was so unique.
i think.. that we did a good job so far.
should've gotten ayrun so he could make one last vault speed build
ngl.. i miss old dbd... :(
mostly the old survivor movement. it always brings me back in time when i watch that type of videos.
i feel like the game was more fun except for freddy mains lol
I'd almost welcome back old nurse if it meant balanced landing was back the way it used to be and Blight was deleted.
Old freddy was much more fun imo, he wasn't the greatest but i actually felt like freddy. Those were the days.
2018 survivor animations>
it’s crazy how busted the game was back then but even crazier how everyone was ass and getting 4ks were always possible even when the odds are against you with all the old things like vault animations and how the maps were unbalanced.
I know its nostalgia but the 2018 version of the game is when i started playing .... and i miss that version a bit lol . Well except the pick up and drop to avoid ds
I miss the colors and atmosphere of old dbd. The grittiness and how much the killer and blood stains pop. It was just more creepy to walk around a map every game. Most the new maps are so bright. They should do some more things with that old style
Yeah I’m glad old DBD is no longer around.
I am such a sucker for the darker atmosphere it had.
I get it, its rough for killers. But I wish they could've went the route of increased killer brightness while keeping survivors with darker vision.
Ill actually turn down my screen brightness for when I play survivor to somewhat bring it back.
That is what old shadowborn did, increase the light level. However noone used it because it also made it easier to blind you. And this was when Instablinds were still a thing.
