Is This Africa Or South America!? Suriname's Maroons (

- Suriname is a very interesting country. Hundreds of years ago, escaped slaves hid in the Amazon rainforest, forming new tribes out of people that came from various parts of Africa. Today, these villages still speak African languages and maintain some of the traditions from the continent. These are the Maroon villages, and there's nothing like them anywhere else. You could say it's "the most African place outside of Africa".
Feeling a bit nostalgic for Africa after my travels in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Nigeria, I was happy to visit the place.

I’m so proud of how your channel has grown and the type of content you make. No rude comments, no political ideologies hidden in your conversations, no lessening the troubles you see and the greatness of the human spirit you encounter. You’re a tad risky but with enough street smarts to know how to navigate and maintain situations perfectly. Thank you for being a positive American ambassador in these foreign countries. I hope you’re well and having a blast. Just thanks Tommy.

Thank you for being a positive human* ambassador
thats weak.. Politics are important to all factors of life. Don't be so damned afraid of uncomfortable conversations that you let the really bad things happen
"Real shit...fuck the politics" I get it's important for X y and z but ultimately life is so much more than governments and the things they decide. Just a T-Rex I think you put it very nicely! No hidden agendas of a story he wants to tell, just Tommy learning and sharing with us. The purity of what life is, was and should be about! We are so lucky to be here right now, regardless of the circumstances around the world.

Those kids were so happy I couldn’t stop smiling. They must have great parents
Staying away from black screens helps a lot.
You might think that is some where in Ghana. These kids act, look a like, happy like the kids in Ghana you could see their have Ghana roots. In fact
most West Africans decendants who went to Suriname during Trans Atlantic
Slave Trade came from Ghana and still speak a form of Twi.
Of course. In a village like that they hardly see strangers. So an American passing by is the event of the month..
as a suriname native , i am immensely proud of how you portray our beloved country. ik ben je erg dankbaar.
You should be very proud to come from such a beautiful country. All the people are so nice & the children are so fun & curious. I would love to visit one day. Blessings to you & your beautiful homeland. Love from USA

@homepcmacbook5996 and a lot of people from Indian descent live in Suriname more as 200k people the second or first largest community in Suriname
Suriname is a beautiful country with mixed races due to slavery. The country itself is in South Amerika. However you will find people with African, Indian, Indonesian, Javanese, Chinese and Dutch roots. A very beautiful country with amazing people. Suriname used to a colony of the Netherlands indeed, at some point it got taken by the UK and later on the Netherlands got "their colony" back. The country has great soil, beautiful tropical sights and during summer periods it can be very hot. The fruits are exotic and the food is amazing! Because there the county is filled with mixed races you will find several different cultural dishes.
Indonesia was also a colony the Netherlands. Back then it was called Netherland-Indie.
Javanese are Indonesian my friend😉
And Brazilian
no, it's not just 'cause slavery'. indians and chinese still move their for jobs. some of the blacks are cause slavery.
And indigenous people like the arawak , kaliña and wayana
Another great video! Much love to the people of Suriname from Australia.

Always a good day when you see a new video from Tommy!
Are those little children in Suriname already speaking 4-5 languages ? Wow. Amazing.
Very nice video.
Everyone here speaks 3-4 languages from the get go. First the native tongue (e.g. Javanese, Saramakaans, Sarnami, etc.), then Dutch (official language) and Sranan (lingua franca). These are the basics. Additionally many also speak English, Spanish, Portuguese and French.
@@kalm435 Really amazing. If only the government was as amazing as these children.
The glory of a Saturday night video. God bless and bon voyage.
I went to South Africa in February and I fell in love. My wife is Zulu and their people welcomed me with open hearts.
Our culture of welcoming every human being is what the bloodthirsties took advantage on till this 21st century. But I still think it's not something we have to regret for. Because, it's the value of humanity (Ubuntu).
That’s awesome.
West Africa is different

Some of the "tongo" (tongue) is the same as Jamaica. For e.g., "Me a g'weh" = "Me a go 'way" (for "I'm leaving") is quite normal for us Yardies. Great episode, Tom. Thanks.
--Æ.
You're right. Some more similarities i noticed between patwa and sranan tongo are words like unnu - s'don (siddung) - fos' (fos as in first) - doti (dutty) - pikin (pikney) - nyan (nyam) - tan - bakra, dyuku (jook). And much more. Not surprising as our language shares the same origins with the biggest difference being a the level of exposure to english and dutch, as Suriname became a dutch colony after sranan tongo was conceived.
@@MrAfusensi Super interesting! More Yardies should go visit; I certainly will. There's also the Njukka Maroon tribe there too with similar history and background.
Tom did point out the high percentage of Akan Twi (centered in Ghana) in their language; Jamaica has a good portion of said Twi in our Patois too, and hence some of the similarities.
--Æ.
@@AckeeEater. , Because the jamaicans as the Suriname saramacan maroons were taken from the same place of west africa..ghana, kongo, nigeria , benin etc

Im enjoying travelling the world with you on your adventures.

Those kids were so cute. I think a lot of people don't know that there are majority African descended countries and regions in South America. A lot of us have heard of Suriname. But most haven't. It’s far different from where nigeria but I could see some similarities to Cameroon it also has some South American qualities to it
@@GoldenBoyDims you know Nigeria and Cameroon literally are identical countries right! So be quiet .
Actually lol are the same people who fought the white slavers from the jungle... They actually barely changed... mixed Ghana/Nigerian and other type of african tribes and created new ones fighting the whites from the jungle... They didnt change...
You guys did... The only reason why this happened is that they were FORCED to cooperate and create new tribes to survive...
And integrating with the natives... and since it was their way of living it went so well with all the other people who came afterwards...

The smiles and laughter of these children gave me so much joy and had me grinning from ear to ear. Thanks for bringing us this beautiful piece. As a West African, this has so much similarity with my ancestral village
While those kids are playing freely without fear and while their parents are probably busy providing for that day's human survival, I suspect they are very aware of your presence and are watching your every move. I suspect that part of Suriname is a true definition of "it take a village to raise a child". ✌🇸🇷

Hey Tommy. So, now you've also picked up a good bit of Saramaccan language which until now I had no idea existed. 12:07 One of my friends has been a school teacher for a couple of years in a Surinam village. She earned the local salary, living exactly like a Surinam teacher would have done. And she was so angry because of some expat teachers, who earned an awful lot of money, and still did not even try to be a good teacher. That is what teachers are for, taking care of the children. Making a difference. When she came back as a tourist, years later, she was welcomed by people having children themselves!
