Amazing video! Would love to see you make a video about the history and demografics of Haiti. Including the roles of the French, Spanish, English and Polish that turned on the French.
There’s nothing ‘weird’ about the demographics of Suriname. This is just how things happened during colonial times. In some parts of the world people may see this as ‘weird’ if you are not used to see these kind of demographics in certain places. But for me, a Dutchie of Indian-Surinamese descent, it makes perfect sense. As for most people with with connections to / basic knowledge of Suriname. Good video btw 👍🏽
I expected the Chinese percentage to be much higher because when I was in NL I noticed that all their Chinese restaurants were actually “Surinaams” Chinese Restaurants so I thought they must have been pretty influential on the culture.

Solid video! Just a small comment on your pronunciation, Dutch is basically said like "dodge", but without drawing out the vowel as much. You make it sound more like Deutsch, which is the German word for "German". Not the same.
Another point that was not mentioned: Suriname was the ‘consolation prize’ for the Brits taking over Dutch possessions in North America, i.e. New York. The country wasn’t considered valuable at the time. Until the discovery of bauxite.
AT that time , it was quite the opposite; the SUrinam area was considered economically profitable, and the New York/Amsterdam island , enveloped by all things british looked to be not economically viable (hunting beaver skin ? denied..logging wood ? denied...).

The percentages you are asking , for this research is necessary but also difficult because there was no basic administration and properties could also changed from hand without administration .
You can find answers studying "testaments" or "last wills" but a complete registration isn't available as far I know.
It will be interesting studying the period after abolishing slavery and the story of free colored people in Suriname .
Say from 1863 to 1940 . In 1928 everyone became Dutch ,before this time for example the "hindustanen " were British. etc.
Very happy too see a video about out country. Although my country isn't doing good at the moment but i am a proud Surinamese netizen. I love my country so Thank you so much. I really appreciate it ❣️. Greetings from Suriname
So it's odd, but not weird?
Weird as in uncommon or unique. Kids today wanna be offended by everything jeez calm the fugg down.
Using “weird” is more of a click bait
Weird means that it's not common , so this whole text is pointless
I expected the Chinese percentage to be much higher because when I was in NL I noticed that all their Chinese restaurants were actually “Surinaams” Chinese Restaurants so I thought they must have been pretty influential on the culture.
Okay now you did your research! I love this.👏
as a Surinamese I can confirm that this video is 99% accurrate (the way you said sranantongo was funny AF LMAO)
Aku wong Jowo Indonesia. salam kanggo sedulurku wong Jowo neng Suriname. Aku pengen dolan neng Suriname... moga aku bisa neng Suriname... salam seduluran soko Yogyakarta
Love the fact people get to know my country more❤💪
Nice job greetings from 🇸🇷
Wow so cool! Thanks for the info! Im born in Suriname (Indian roots), raised up in the Netherlands 🤩
Bro i'm from suriname born in the netherlands and I knew so little about my own country...thanks for this
You’ve done your research very well! Great video on my home country. For part two you might consider talking about the Surinamese diaspora spread out over the globe 🌎.
So proud to be a Surinamese🇸🇷
bigup sranang 🇸🇷❤️
Tank you for taking the time to talk about my country ❤❤
Solid video! Just a small comment on your pronunciation, Dutch is basically said like "dodge", but without drawing out the vowel as much. You make it sound more like Deutsch, which is the German word for "German". Not the same.
I am from Suriname 🇸🇷 and i am a hindu
From India here, proud of you guys continuing your tradition. Respect to all Indian and surinames3 people
Another point that was not mentioned: Suriname was the ‘consolation prize’ for the Brits taking over Dutch possessions in North America, i.e. New York. The country wasn’t considered valuable at the time. Until the discovery of bauxite.
Geography 👍
AT that time , it was quite the opposite; the SUrinam area was considered economically profitable, and the New York/Amsterdam island , enveloped by all things british looked to be not economically viable (hunting beaver skin ? denied..logging wood ? denied...).
Plantations produced luxury products for Europe: chocolate, coffee, sugar, tropical wood etc.
@@oddballsok That is some dutch revisionist bs. The dutch lost new amsterdam, they had no way of holding it and it wasnt a real trade.
This comment is completely wrong. Suriname was at the time of New Amsterdam way more profitable.
I love my Indian Suriname family in law :) Can't wait to visit one day with them
I'm also from suriname. This is the first time that there's a documentary. Love my country.
Love this video about my birth country , beautiful and many tnx for sharing
Would you be making a video on Curaçao? Especially since they were also colonized by the Netherlands and all that?
I don't have one scheduled but I probably will at some point.
@@GeographyGeek
Dude, take all the time you need. The fact that you'll be willing to make one is already so awesome. Thank you so much! As someone from Curaçao, I appreciate you a lot.
I would love to know more about this unique country, wonderful documentary.
Thank you! I have more planned
I like this video. I only noticed that you skipped an explanation for so little indigenous people. It is the same as in all the Americas; they were the locals and murdered by the Europeans for colonisation.
I agree.. it’s not like they asked for all that diversity.
I can relate to Suriname so much since I'm a product of different languages and cultures around the globe.
That means they screwed your great grandparents multiple times!! Haha😅😅
What ethnicities you havein you? 🙂
Thankyou for this video
No problem! Thank you for watching!
One thing you might add: Suriname was the first proposed future state of Israel! It's first capital was Torarica, named after the Torah.
Nice video, very informative 🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷
Thank you!
"Suriname's demographics sound like a GeographyNow!'s April Fool's episode" !? LoL ^-^ !
Thanks for this video. If I were teaching geography this would be an Excellent example of the theme of movement.
I am from Suriname and i like this video...
"The Demographic effects of European Colonialism"

Oh nice! I have read it’s an underestimated tourist destination.
Grantangi fu a video disie!!
(thanks for this video in Sranang)
Thanks for watching!!
The Ditch weren't too bright in giving up Manhattan and New Amsterdam to the British for that hell hole of Suriname. The same ironically holds true of the French who gave up not one but two huge tracks of North America for their South American hell hole of French Guyana....
As a former inhabitant of Suriname, I find the demographic of Suriname and South Africa share a similar trait. Both countries have had their demographics influenced by the Dutch and the British.
Because of colonization
Ek vind die uitspraak van Surinamese Dutch en Afrikaans baie dieselfde. Groete uit Suid Afrika 🇿🇦
I find the pronunciation of Surinamese Dutch and Afrikaans very similar. Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦
South Africa is a black african country in Africa with small minorities of colonial people
What are some other interesting topics about Suriname you would like me to research and make a video about?
Bauxite exports for aluminum industry during the second world war. Lookup Suralco (Alcoa company)
Suriname is the greenest country in the world, with rainforest covering more than 90%.
The rivers
Why french Guiana is still under possession and not independent
Our rainforest, the current ethnicities( Lebanese, Turkish etc) and the multiple languages that are spoken could also be very good topics ! There are at least 18 languages spoken and each Surinamese can at least speak and understand 2 or 3 languages.
indonesian here. lotsa love for suriname! would love to visit someday for the food n culture

I miss Suriname, I'm from there as well. But now I am in USA, Beach VA. Wish there were some cool Suriname ppl here my age lol 30
Surinam would be completely different if there was no Bouterse. I felt ashamed when this murderer became president. And he's still walking free.
Yay Suriname is getting more popular
I beg to talk, different about slavery ?
It was with hard Afro labor (slavery) on which Suriname was started in 1615, and for 90% build and founded on. With 250 years Afro labor(slavery) build and founded Suriname; really out of the virgin tropical jungle and swamp. The blueprint was created by the colonial Dutch administration.
400,000 Afro forefathers were lost, in a timespan, when the world population was
Can you make a video about Mauritius? Its also very weird!
Interesting demographics, similar story to Cape Town: Tussle between England and Netherlands, slaves from South East Asia, West Africa and Americas. Cape Town "Coloureds" are multiracial as well.
Dankie , dit was baie interessant. Groete van die Kaap.
Watching from Australia
From Sranang and Proud✊
The demographic is almost as "weird" as the rest of the countries in the Caribean South America and the rest of the world that was brutalized, pillaged, robbed empty etc. etc. by the "traders" and "explorers".😩😩😩
From Suriname!!🇸🇷
You guys actually realize us
I am Javanese from Indonesia, I hope one day I can visit Suriname. 🇮🇩🤝🇸🇷
You are welcome bro....saya orang jawa
You should! 🇸🇷❤️
Interessant!
Thanks for the the information about my country. Mix race 🏎 every where.
I have a question. Are the Indo-Surinamese considered to be of the black race? And if not, what race are they considered? Thank you for educating the world on this topic! Great video✨🇸🇷
The China map at 3:43 ...what its name ?
My family are from Suriname my grandfather his mother was a slave back then love my roots been to Suriname once although i didn't like it because it was so busy and i have a problem with being around a lot of people although that I still think it's really beautiful but yeah I was 12 years old when I went there and now 41 so yeah probably a lot have changed what I have heard about it from my nephew who was there for the video clip of boef.
I LOVE SU🇸🇷, I was born in Florida but grew up in Suriname, I can’t wait to go back to Suriname , it needs to get restored back to how it was, there needs to be a new president‼️‼️
I am Brazilian and Suriname is a very far neighbor of Brazil. Not only for language(s) but also culture.

For everyone visiting the Netherlands, seek out a Suranamese sandwich shop. The are really good and very unique. the "POM" Sandwiches are my favorite
For me is broodje kerrie kip of broodje kouseband in de amsterdamse poort of venserpolder
Nice video, but the borders are not correct!
Thank you, I noted the mistake in the pinned comment.
My birthplace is now a well know country to visit by Americans and other
my father was born in suriname, both dutch parents though
Very nice, informative and to the point. Tips for next topics: Suriname was always a rich country, but since independency from the Netherlands it became a poor and unorganized country. What is your thought about getting Suriname out of this mess, what can they do on export, on tourism, what are nearby countries to work with and why. Greetings from Suriname.
watching from Kenya
Those are not our borders. A large part is missing. Our border is set by two rivers. Corantijn and Marowijne river all the way down. other than that great vid.
Thank you! I noted it in the pinned comments.
This country is my native birth land!! Such an sweet country to live, nice weather, deliciouse fruit and food ..all cultures (from India, Java/ Indonesië, China, Africa, and the mixed culture the Creolen , the real natives, the Indians with red skin, and the Dutch people people...all live together as one nation!!! No jelousy or nasty Neighbours...but all changed ..when one person became President (after Surinam was Ondependant from Holland). His name Desi Bouterse, changed the whole LIFE of a lot of Surinam people....hè killed some very highstandard Surinam people, very intelligent people...His milletaries took those people from their homes or at their work...and let them all executed without an trial!!! Murder by first degree...So a lot of intelligent high standard people were affraid that the same execution would happend to them...so they fled to the Motherland Holland, or to the USA, Canada, Australië...or to the Antillen..Aruba, French Guyana and Brasil! This president changed the life of so many many many Surinam people...i hope hè looked himself in the mirror and relalized what an MONSTER HE WAS!! Judgementsdau is waiting for him!!!! He live sn LIFE as an king ...but the day when hè closed his eyes for ever...his Master is waiting for him....and no one is going to hear him...no one...only his Master!!!By doing evil...means ..he sold his soul to the master of Evil!!! And what is from the Master of Evil hè never let go.....what is from God...God never let go..
So rewards and judgement comes Upstairs in the Universum!!!!!!
why did you not start out talking about the Natives?
Mugo keturunan Jawa-Suriname iso boso Jowo. Wong Jowo ojo nganti ilang Jawane. Love from Javanese Indonesia

What about the Netherlands indians from Indonesia?
@@gsw977SoekarnoNederlands-Indie you have a lot of them here in the netherlands (our mp is also a bit) but i’m not that. You do have a lot of people from Java in surinam.
Yo nunca sabia que estaba este pais en sur america.hasta ahorita in 2024 me acabo de de dar cuenta de este pais.i never kneww this country existed.until now in 2024 nice country good culture .good history.
Getting Ready for the Premiere!!! 😮😮😀😀😀
bonjour pouvez vous lire ceci?
Big up my fellow Surinamese
The map in these video and all map you see in video or geography are wrong maps of the country of Suriname. The surface of the country Suriname is larger. Guyana has occupied part of the Surinamese territory in the southwest and pretends to own it. In the southeast, France/French Guiana says the portion is theirs.
Thank you. It’s been noted in the pinned comment.
I live in Suriname
