- Betsy Welch and Ben Delaney went to The Mid South gravel race to report on the event and test some gear.
Find out why they choose the equipment they did, and how it fared on the muddy, muddy, 104-mile day in Oklahoma.
And check out all The Mid South VeloNews coverage at www.velonews.c...
Ben has the best sounding voice in the cycling world :)
Hard to go wrong with the Salsa Warbird.
Just FYI, this video is unlisted. Your videos are consistently great, and everyone should be able to see them on your channel :)
Thanks! Just had it unlisted for a bit while we got the lead image lined up. Cheers!
1:25 wow that seat post is noticeably flexible
It’s cool that John Cena does bike reviews.
Ben - Save the jacket by taking it to a tailor and having the zipper replaced. I did that with the broken zipper on my Rapha jacket. You can even improve the original by having a 2-way pull, etc.
Ah, good shout! I will do that. Cheers.
The WarBird is a beauty! I have the black one - it's beautiful and fast. And has mudguard, rack, top tube and fork crown mounts (the 2020 version, like the beautiful pink one here, unfortunately has done away with a fork crown mount. Very shortsighted of Salsa).
Love Salsa
I love my 2018 Why R+
Amazing bike.
A tip from my enduro motorbikes times, put thick grease on the zippers and will help to work smoothly or at least won't get stuck so soon
Good shout. Thanks.
My zippers froze up too after being packed with mud. A power washer and some chapstick and/or running a bar of soap along the zipper teeth has the zipper opening and closing as smooth as butter again.
Pro tip! Thanks.
Hey Ben, finally found you here...The American Bike Radar Guy
Mud, dirt = to destruction. That's one expensive sport !
That downtube under bottle.. oof. Mudshake. haha
Nice👍👍
fun
Aha! Haven't see Ben in aaaaages.
I want to know what sunglasses those are!
Wait!..a gravel race went down two weeks ago? Do I have that right?
Small, fine toothed, zippers on outdoor clothing and gear drive me nuts.
Mudguards?
Thing is, those reduce clearance and give the mud more places to jam up. So, no. Interestingly, Pete Stetina's mechanic zip-tied on some aluminum shims to the inside of his fork legs and stays to try to protect his frame. But trying to protect from mud splatter is a losing battle.
What is the brand of the titanium bike?

Have had nothing but problems with my Why R+. Not worth the heavy price tag.
Why do people have to say they’re being honest all the time?
Ya'll forget about mudguards or some kind of deflector ? Kinda dumb but I guess ya'll need to escape your city lives sometimes.
So when he was in Colorado he said he prefers to ride 1x and now all of a sudden “sponsored video”. He says 2x is better. Lol come on
What are you talking about? This isn't a sponsored video. 1x can be good for gravel. It's what I have on my personal bike. But I do prefer 2x.
VeloNews gotcha. Thanks for the clarification. Thought for some reason the products were provided as a promotion. I know Salsa does a lot of promoting for gravel races. Makes people who ride them more inclined to say nice things if they’re given to them.
FAT BIKES!! 4 OR 5 INCH TIRES!!
So the bikes felt like you was riding a bicycle right? That's all you had to say, they felt like riding a bicycle. On terrain like this I think a $1000 bicycle would feel exactly the same.
Maybe they should have done less gravel bike testing and more CV19 testing.
I really wish they made the grx in something other than pink. The paint job on the 2019 grey zebra is awesome
there is a dark blue....I have one. Its gorgeous
Mudguards?
Thing is, those reduce clearance and give the mud more places to jam up. So, no.
Can you make a video with and without mudguards and prove it?
Love that Salsa - that hot pink is awesome. Also you guys did a hell of a job getting those bikes and bags and stuff that clean the day after those conditions.
A few bucks' worth of quarters at the car wash goes a long way... :-)
Great rundown on the gear - thanks for the information! Not all bikes survived.
I would have loved to see a top tube bag debate. Maybe Ben's knees are just that much bigger.
Good future video idea...
Another outstandingly well done, crazy helpful review! Seriously - I could (and do!) watch your videos simply for pleasure sometimes.
What was the bag brand and name on the Warbird? Thanks!
It's the Apidura racing frame bag. Running one on my mtb. A few nice features are zippers on both sides, and a pass thru for charging cables
