Brings tear to my eyes when I remember singing it at school. It makes me think of how Britain endured the second world war and even now living in NZ makes me long for my homeland and the history and traditions which are part of my heart and sole. I feel that. I am here in Asia, no ties back to my family back home. Saddened to see her unrecognizable. If things get bad where I am, I am not sure my country would be a sanctuary anymore, knowing it’s values have changed so much. You know of course that the words were written by William Blake poet, mystic and engraver. While not overtly politically involved he was like many London artisans a follower of the Corresponding Society, which believed in promoting the ideals of the French revolutionary Jacobins. Of course it came to nothing largely because of William Pitt the Younger's suppression during his reign of terror.
Blake dreamed of "an" England, true. Not quite the England of the ruling class, however.

I've often felt that I may have been English in a past life - I feel like I'd be right at home in a small cosy cottage way out in the English countryside, or in a cosy study somewhere with an open fire and the great smell of old books lining the shelves of the room.
I *feel* English for some reason - I love the history and culture associated with the old universities of Oxford and Cambridge - that really resonates with me.

you ever notice it's not a 'Christian' hymn though ? Blake wasn't directing praise to God, but composed an ode to Britain becoming the promised land - slapping a couple of Biblical terms and one of the titles of Christ onto his occult ditty
now seeing as you were raised singing hymns, you're probably familiar with the 10 Commandments, yes - so do you remember the one that forbids taking God's name in vain ?
... and do you also remember what God does with nations that take His name in vain ?

Not a bad thing in itself as long as it was just discussed around the cave / village square . However then came so called priests or rulers and then the dark side occasionally took over . Thats why folks broke away from Catholicism , they simply did not want to be ruled by some silly old bloke in Rome . They preferred to have their own silly old bloke who could make up their rules . On another note I wonder if the various "gods" created are rather a replacement for a mother who up to a certain point in young life are the gods who fix all your problems ?

    • @ThePalaeontologist
      @ThePalaeontologist 2 роки тому +7

@SUTTYMCFC If I were to hazard a guess, I'd figure it was something to do with the Royals wanting to keep as relevant as possible. GSTQ is a very old anthem and has a lot of history (technically, it was 'adopted' from the French Royalists) The actual original version of GSTQ was a French anthem for their absolute monarchy. That stopped existing and the British started a version of it around 1745, popularly. Britain was quite 'involved' on the continent during the 1740's, and so perhaps it was just seen as fair enough back then, for the British to be singing a French Royalist song in a British version. The British and French were fighting a lot in that time (see battles like Fontenoy, which the French won; or Dettingen, which the British and their allies won etc)
I get the feeling that the Royals today are reluctant to drift away from officially using it everywhere, because the British monarchy typically try to maintain some semblance of narrative control. The indulgent nature of the song is aging increasing poorly and on a PR level it wouldn't surprise me if a future decision by Charles or William, could be made to change it to Jerusalem. In the Commonwealth Games as well as Cricket, Jerusalem is already used for the England teams. However, in both men's and women's football, during say, the Euros, a particularly drearily sung version of God Save The Queen is always used. In terms of high-profile sport, the use of GSTQ is _still_ maintained.
There are some events and sports that use Jerusalem for the England teams, though some do not. Why this is the case, can sometimes come down to quirks of history and old traditions. The preference for Jerusalem and other songs like I Vow To Thee My Country is growing more vocal, though I think there is a point where nobody will change it because of respect for what we could call the 'continuity monarch' Queen Elizabeth II. Britain is a Constitutional Democracy; neither an Absolute Monarchy, like some states still out there in the world, nor a Republic. To some extent, they have power over things like this. Although, most of their 'power' is 'soft power' these days.
I agree with you, next to nobody would prefer GSTQ over Jerusalem or I Vow To Thee My Country. It's too indulgent, selfish sounding. It has it's charms and moments, and it can be given better renditions. But Jerusalem is far better tonally and melodically. It's more of a song for all of the people, not just the Royalty. And the imposition of it does it no favours. It is a pride thing, almost, at this point. Just a way of saying they still matter.

      @ThePalaeontologist 2 роки тому +7

@@Sumautisticguy What exactly is the problem with preserving tradition regardless of the nature of it's historical aspects? Are you aware how outright sanguinary and well, belligerent the French national anthem is? Have you ever read an English translation in full of the actual French national anthem?
If you compare it to God Save The Queen/King, the British adaptation of the originally French song (GSTQ/K was from Royalist France to begin with before Britain 'borrowed it' in 1745, while at war with France as it happens as well; which was happening a lot in the 18th century though)
Some lines in GSTQ/K may well be non-PC in the year 2022 but so what?
We should not hold centuries old songs to present day standards. It may seem discordant to retain anachronisms, yet that is part of the point of preserving heritage and tradition. It merely requires people to have the mental fortitude and emotional courage not to get tied in knots over crying about 'imperialism this' and 'not-PC' that. Obviously it is going to be a problem if you actively begin with the preconception that one must take offence at it. Nobody needs to be offended by it. I somehow doubt you'll ever see the French national anthem get cancelled in spite of it being incredibly, hilariously bloodthirsty.

The substance of parenting has gone, for the general masses Most now think that clothing, feeding, and keeping their children entertained is parenting.
We start with the inner person, and then work out to the things of the world. History is extremely important, and manners, civility, common sense, and thinking, to be alert, as the world is one of lies and deceit, and the sooner we side step such the better persons we become.

Created the modern world as it is. Gave us the language of Shakespeare. Physics with Newton. Liberty by holding out in World War II. And not to mention football!

    Ok, this is huge.
First of all, there are no words to describe how this is beautiful. It’s without any doubt the best version of this song I ever heard.
And then, it’s about the work of this channel and it’s evolution. The edition is by far among the best, and the choice of imagery is, I dare say, perfect for this song. And I have to recognize one small detail. The last version you uploaded of this song was already great, but a fair criticism was that a song supposedly about rural England showed little of “England’s green and pleasant land”, being the editon then more focused in urban centers. Well, my friend, what a marvelous jaw dropping response this new version is. It shows not only your talent but also your dedication to improve your already good work. And I consider that small detail very important.
Thank you, Ian Berwick, and May you never cease your mental fight for you are arguably the best among your pairs in the anthem community.
And in a personal note, I have to say this beautiful edition represents very fairly well what England represents to me, that noble Nation whit whom my own country has the oldest Alliance still active in the world. Obrigado desde o velho Portugal.

One can sympathise with Blake’s concern for advancing ‘Godless’ Industrialisation, leading to the inevitable loss of the romanticised pastoral idyll he perceived England to be.
What irony that our emerging Industrial ‘Revolution’ and its resultant inventions, was to become the envy of the World and power an Empire on a scale that Blake could never have imagined. For good and ill?

Absolutely AMAZING!! As an American I have always wanted to visit this wonderous place, and finally Next Year 2023 I will be heading to York!! This anthem sends shivers through my body, and yes, I do love God Save The Queen, but this should be your national anthem. England is where my heart resides! I have the Union Jack on my car, and the flag in my flat. ❤

    • @britbazza3568
      @britbazza3568 2 роки тому +39

Micheal that's great to hear. You do have a bit to learn by the sound of it though.
For starters the Union Jack is only known as a Jack when flown on a ship otherwise it's called the Union flag.
This isn't the flag of England though it is the flag of "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland".
The UK as it is known for shortness is made up of four independent Nations they are England. Wales. Scotland. and Northern Ireland.
Each have their own very rich cultures history and identities
Each Nation also have their own unofficial National Anthems and they also have their own individual flags too.
The flag of St George is the English flag and is a red cross on a white background as is the flag in this video above.
The Scottish flag is the flag of St Andrew and is a diagonal white cross on a blue background.
The Welsh flag is a red dragon on a green and white background
The Northern Irish flag is called the Red Hand of Ulster. Which is a red hand set in a red cross with a white background so basically a St George's Cross with a red hand set in a yellow outline.
Each nation has its own unofficial National anthem too the English one is "Jerusalem" as stated on here.
The Welsh one is Land of my Father's.
The Scottish one is Flower of Scotland.
The Northern Irish one is Danny Boy.
Collectively the four nations official national anthem is "God Save the Queen "
The reason we have so many flags and anthems is because of our very long and varied history that over the course of a thousand yrs brought the four nations to become one nation. But we kept our Individual identity cultures and history.
Also another thing to take into account here is when you are here in the UK you will come we all have very different accents and dialects. This changes every ten to twenty miles or so..in fact there are well over 200 accents and dialects in the UK as a whole and each one can be very different too so don't make the mistake of calling us all English because the Welsh Irish and Scottish will take offence at this to be on the safe side if you have to say anything call us British but that can be a minefield also because all the nations predominantly want to be called their own nations name first and British second so just be careful with that one.
Now for a change of tack. Jerusalem which originally was written as a hymn tells the story of when Jesus came to England as a child then as a young man with his uncle k
Joseph of Arimathea who was a tin trader and came to Cornwall in the south west of England which 2000 yrs ago was the tin mine capital of the known world. Jesus then went to a town called Avalon which is now called Glastonbury and is supposed to be the burial place of Jesus and also the home of the holy grail. Avalon or Glastonbury as it is now known is also supposed to be the place where England's first church was built by the hands of Jesus himself.
Anyway the hymn is in celebration of Jesus coming to England 2000 yrs ago with his uncle hence the opening line " did those feet in ancient times walk among England fields ... And the other line into the hymn " the Holy Lamb of God".... Meaning Jesus himself
There has been some research undertaken into the origins of the hymn and there is said to be proof of this as far as can be proved hence why this song has the power and meaning it does to the English culture and Pshycy.
Anyway when you come to the UK please enjoy yourself and I'm sure any British person you meet will make you feel welcome. Don't believe all you hear on your news about a lot of Brits not liking Americans.
That is a small group of idiots in the London Orbital Motorway the M25. (Freeway) that have that view. Also make sure you travel around the UK as a whole and don't just stick to London the UK is a lot more than London. The UK is very beautiful outside of London too

Hello and cheers from the other side of the pond. Firstly, I can't thank you enough for your kindness and generous effort to educate one so naive yet willing to learn and understand.
As I am writing this reply I am replaying the video for inspiration and when I meet your fellow Brits if they are half as nice, kind, and tolerant I know my time in your country will be deeply moving and memorable.
I truly appreciate your detail of facts about the four countries in the United Kingdom and have a better understanding awareness of each of their identities, culture, and history. And also, an understanding of the hymn Jerusalem and its origins. Completely fascinating. I still have a lot to learn and that I am looking forward too. I have been over the years acclimating myself to the different vocabulary terms indigenous to Great Britian. And frankly, my attraction to your country started over 20 years ago when I was working at Walt Disney World in Florida where at the time most of the guests were from Great Britian. The Scottish dialect was difficult to understand but they were so patient, and we had fun navigating to understand each other. Most were from England, and I knew this was a place I had to go to.
So, this year I knew once Covid was subsiding that the time was to prepare a trip. My intention though was to visit the countryside, chat with locals, and not so much get involved in big city life. After watching a lot of walking tours on You Tube, and listening to people's experiences, initially I was heading to Brighton Beach because of its diversity which I like but then someone said on his video that he has been to the UK 4 times and for him the best city was York. So, I did a walking tour, watched videos, and fell in love with the area. I could see myself there. I can still go to London for the day, Edenborough, and recently watched a video on Scarborough near the North Sea or even Robin Hoods Bay. I love train travel, so I thought I could explore via train or bus. But York would be my home base. I am planning on a two-week holiday.
So again, I can't thank you enough for sharing and educating a Yankee. I feel like I completed an Intro to Great Britian 101, and I am forever grateful. I would also like to give you my email for if there were anything that would make this experience even more special or helpful, I would surely appreciate that. My email address is mcus224@gmail.com. I was going to go next July 2023 but now I am thinking September 2023 when there are not so many tourists, what do you think?
I know you are having a heat wave, so I hope you are able to keep cool.
      Be well, Cheers
      Michael

It actually makes sense for them to use this. _God Save the King_ is the British anthem but _Jerusalem_ is the English one, and the four nations of the United Kingdom have separate football teams. The Welsh sing _Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau_ and the Scots sing _Flower of Scotland_ so why not _Jerusalem_ for us?

@@4949Arsenal, because we have our own anthem. The British anthem should be used for UK-specific occasions and the English anthem for English occasions.
We already have the Welsh and Scots asserting their Welsh and Scottish identities respectively, but the English can only be British, it seems.
They have their own parliaments, their own laws, and their own customs independent of England. We may be the main country of the UK but our distinctness is relegated as if we were an insignificant afterthought.

The hymn actually tells of the time when Jesus visited England. In his early yrs he came here with Joseph of Arimathea his Uncle who was a trader in tin. Joseph of Arimathea brought Jesus to England as a child where Jesus then built a church at the now Glastonbury but at the the was called Avalon so this song runs very deep in the English heart and into England's religious beliefs dating back some 2000 yrs
