As a dentist, I stopped watching when you said a dental implant is one of the most painful procedures. Yes it's true that if you aren't anesthetized any dental/medical procedures can carry pain/discomfort. However a dental implant surgery on its own (as graphic as it sounds) is one of the easiest surgeries to numb the patient for, and one of the surgeries associated with the least amount of pain after.

My husband had a crown snap off for some reason, and he just had an implant in his maxilla. Time between break and completion of the procedure was only 2 months. He was inconvenienced by not being able to blow his nose, but he didn't complain much about the pain. I'm also getting an implant, but it's from a shoddy crown in my lower jaw. The original cracked tooth hurt more than the extraction I got yesterday, and more than when my crown snapped off.

@@msvaj what he's saying is true! My father is a dentist (and I was initially studying to become a dentist before changing majors), I have spoken to him at length about several procedures, and I can confirm that what Basal Dabbas is saying is true. As long as you're fully anesthetized you won't feel a thing! Also if you do feel anything at all, let your dentist know and he will give you more anesthetic before proceeding. Hope this helps to make you feel better!

The most painful medical surgery I've had so far is a Liver Transplant, my entire body was so messed up afterward, I couldn't sit up because my abdomen was completely cut open, and it's honestly the worst thing I have ever experienced, it took my body 6 months to stop hurting and even now when I get a pain in my side from running I have flashbacks to being in the hospital bed. For me, it was getting a piece of my brain cut out, and then waking up to find out my brain was swelling, which is obviously dangerous too. Doctors said it was pretty rare for that to happen. It took over a week for it to go down. The surgery was resumed and it went fine. That's the worst pain I've ever been in though.
Edit: If anyone's wondering, I had epilepsy seizures. I had it somewhat under control with high dosage of medication, but when I did have a seizure, it was severe. I had to be revived once. So my neurologist said the best thing to do was find the source and remove it. It was my left temporal lobe. My neurologist said it was pretty much destroyed at that point(former neurologist had done nothing for years). So it was removed, and it cured me from epilepsy. It was in August 2010 when I was 12 years old.

As a victim of dental neglect when I was a child I have had 7 root canal surgeries as an adult (with more to come). I'm pretty much used to them now and they don't hurt me at all. Except for one time when the anaesthetic wore off during an operation once. There is no pain in the world that I could compare that to. I can't even begin to describe it. It is like every sense your body is capable of was enhanced to the point of sheer agony. It hurt to breathe. It hurt to open my eyes because everything was too bright. Even the quietest of noises sounded like being front row at a death metal concert. I could literally hear the air moving around the room and it was deafening.

I had a dental implant 2 years ago. I was fully awake with nothing but numbing medicine during the procedure. No pain, no discomfort. After I took 2 advils and that was it. My wife had (or was told) to have an arterial blood pressure monitor put in during her C-Section. Biggest issue is that my wife has notoriously been a VERY difficult stick (needle wise) and they literally couldn’t get the needle to go into her artery in her wrist. They called just about every person they could and tried countless machines but it just wouldn’t go in. I’ve NEVER seen my wife is so much pain ever, she was so over the pain that she told the hospital she’d rather be discharged right then and there and go to another hospital to have the baby in another day or so. This was all at John’s Hopkins in Baltimore. They ended up just putting a blood pressure cuff on her and she was just fine.

I woke up to morphine and feeling no initial pain. When it wore off, I can’t tell you how painful my face was. It was unimaginable. My face was swollen like a football, wrapped up with my jaw shut wired shut. On top of that, I was wearing braces. I had to relearn how to swallow and say certain words. Initially I couldn’t swallow. I started to freak out a little bit. The surgeon came in and said “well, we’re going to have to put you back in surgery since you’re not able to swallow.” I was scared shitless to go back into surgery. Within a minute I swallowed some water. It took two years to full recover from pain/tingling sensations and numbness. I’m so thankful to have a great, knowledgeable, competent UCLA surgeon. He changed my life.

For #2, you forgot to mention that most lumbar spine surgeries (like mine) are done through an abdominal incision much like a C-section. One surgeon literally holds your guts out of the way for 4 hours while another surgeon literally reaches all the way through you to work on your spine. Insane.
And yes, the pain that I woke up to in the recovery room (and what awaited me in the following months) was absolutely unimaginable, from the bone aches to the spontaneous muscle spasms that felt like my abdomen was trying to tear itself open again.
Fortunately, I was lucky enough to have an artificial replacement disc instead of a vertebral fusion! I have almost full range-of-motion.

Loads of fun! & a few years later, they did it all again a few levels up….

Ridiculous. I've had four brain surgeries, more dental surgeries than I can count, gallbladder removed, thrombectomy to remove a pulmonary embolism, bone marrow draw, and some other minor surgeries. Sure there was pain after each, but that's what pain meds are for. The only one that was extremely painful during was the bone marrow draw, and I've certainly had worse pain than that in my life. If you're feeling pain during a surgical procedure, then you and the anesthesiologist need to have a very looooong heart to heart.
I actually asked them for more pain killers (aka, fentanyl) during the thrombectomy because I could feel them rummaging around in my chest. At first it was just odd, then it started getting painful. That was the point where I scared the surgeon and asked for more fentanyl. He assumed the twilight anesthesia had put me to sleep.

Not that it compares, I've had several crown implants done. And during each procedure, the anesthesia wasn't enough; there were certain spots in which I could still feel pain. I assumed the anesthesia couldn't be any stronger than this, so I would have to endure. Which I did. But one event later, they drilled a tooth in which a nerve seemed unaffected by the anesthesia, and the pain I felt was excruciating. That's when I told the hygienist about the pain and immediately thereafter, they gave me more anesthesia and we were able to resume the procedure with no pain. It took over two hours to get it done.
The moral of the story is, Don't be an idiot like me. Whenever you feel any pain or sensitivity while a dentist operates your mouth, immediately tell them about it and get more novacain! There is no shame in that. Enduring when you don't have to is unnecessarily taxing for the body and the brain. Be smart unlike me.

There are medical and dental procedures that have high statistical rates but from what I’ve seen (also in this thread) is that pain is subjective.
So imo just empathize with someone and hear them when they say they’re in pain, because we aren’t in their shoes and I can’t stand doctors who do not do this and think they know a person’s pain better than they.

Mine went fairly easy, I like them know that I was having pain and where and how and they adjusted it. The problem was after....the headache afterwards was exquisitely excruciating. Worse than the worst hangover....

I've had severe dental trauma from 2 to 14. At 14 I was able to get dental implants and as painful as it was after I woke up I would still choose that pain over not being able to be numbed during procedures that I had to go to every two weeks

I had a full hip replacement at the age of 30 and i can honestly say it was the easiest, lowest pain procedure ive had out of my 10 surgeries. they have you walk as soon as you wake up and the reduction in pain is immediate and profound. it is true it is very invasive but is less painful than the majority of orthopedic surgeries

Depends on the reason for the hip replacement! A lot of people find it very painful and a revision of a hip replacement (for example due to damage from a metal on metal hip) was excruciating and took even longer to recover. I am really glad that yours was OK!
I completely agree that it wasn't my most painful orthopaedic procedure- that was when they cut both hips up and bolted them back together like a jigsaw

My hip replacement in July was easy peasy. Prior to it it was misdiagnosed as me needing a third back surgery from my CT Mylogram. It may need operated but is painless so duh!!! I begged the VA to look at my hip. I was on a four wheel cart to get around. The last 4 months I fell 3 times and sat on the edge of my bed 24/7. I finally gave up and went to see my back surgeon. He saw me struggling to walk in the building and without missing a beat had the nurse get an x-ray of my hip. Boy was I hot!! It was fractured and being miserable for 10 months showed signs of healing then refracturing from falls from having a fractured hip and walking/ limping bent over on that cart and losing my balance. Standing up from the toilet was so bad I pulled the sink just to the left of me outta the wall a little at a time over 10 months. Bone spurs that were jabbing at nerves and surgery 5 days later. Easiest recovery I ever had from about 14 surgeries I’ve had. I’m 57. 3 back surgeries,2 shoulder, 2 hernia with mesh, sinus, rhinoplasty on my nose, tonsils and knee replacement 2 months after the hip this October. The back surgeries were tough but my knee replacement was brutal. 6 weeks of horrible post op pain.

I’ve had 5 of these procedures on your list. Blood gasses are not that bad as long as the RT is good at doing them. I’ve done them and I’ve had it done on me several times while I was in the hospital. Hysterectomy and myomectomy are 2 procedures I’ve had done. With the hysterectomy I was on a Dilauded PCA because the pain was so bad and with the myomectomy I was on IV Dilauded every 3 hours. I had general anesthesia for both of my surgeries and the myomectomy was only supposed to take 1-1 1/2 hours to do but mine took about 4 hours since I had more fibroids than anticipated. I’ve also had a lumbar puncture and that took 3 tries to do. First two failed as they did it at the bedside in the ICU so they had to try for a 3rd time in Interventional Radiology. And the last was having my gallbladder removed. That was brutal. After getting home from surgery I took oral pain meds and was vomiting them up so I decided not to take any pain meds at all since they were all oral. The IV Dilauded at the surgery center didn’t touch the pain. My gallbladder was the first surgery I ever had and the only abdominal surgery where I was sent home the same day. Other abdominal surgeries had me hospitalized for 3 days

I had a myomectomy- Ive had issues with fibroids for over 20 years . One of them got so large it was the size of a cantaloupe and was causing a lot of issues . I had already had a c-section as well a few laparoscopic surgeries so definitely thought it would not be a big deal. Well I was wrong - it was horrific ! At the same time I have cared for patients whove had the same surgery who didnt seem to have the same degree of pain ( Im a nurse )

Well with the local anesthesia they would usually put a numbing gel over the area to keep the patient comfortable during the procedure then 10 mins later they ask you of you are numb enough then they will use the needle.

Once I got viral warts in the hospital (I had a laparoscopic cholecystectomy which wasn't really that painful afterwards). But, those warts were so persistent on staying on my fingers that none of the typical methods of removing them worked, such as freezing and salicylic acid. So, I had to go through electrofulguration. It's a procedure during which they are burned with electricity. They were quite tender and painful already, so the pain started right at the beginning, when dermatologist injected anesthetic directly into every single one of them (I had like 5 or 6). Then, she started burning them (spoiler alert: anesthetic didn't keep all the pain away). It was the only medical procedure in my life that left me literally shaking from pain. It was absolutely worth it, though. Didn't have any warts since then.

I'm a trans man who's undergoing the hysterectomy in the near future and I've heard from people who got it done before me that the pain is not as bad. I think that pretty much depends on your tolerance for pain in the first place. I underwent a mastectomy (removal of breast tissue) on both sides already and the pain wasn't that bad at all.
I'm now a little nervous, though! I hope that the hysterectomy is not gonna be as bad as the video is saying. :')

I am still angry that they told me my bone marrow biopsy wouldn’t be that painful, just uncomfortable. I have a fairly high pain tolerance but I sobbed like a baby the entire time. One of the most excruciating experiences of my life. Thankfully my cancer had not spread to my bone marrow. But I also vowed that if I ever need another biopsy I will pay whatever the cost to have it done under sedation.

I’d say the most painful procedure I’ve had was getting a ganglion cyst removed from the joint that connects my thumb to my hand. The doctor didn’t give me enough of the local anesthetic so I felt the entire procedure. The feeling of someone yanking on a cyst is a special one. I didn’t ask for more of the anesthetic because of how bad my social anxiety was. My hand has been kinda messed up since then. That was over a decade ago

I recently had an accident in which i managed to get 6-7 fractures in my zygomatic bone(cheek bone). Plastic surgeon had to put 3 titanium plates in order to fix those fractures which included making cuts below the eye and inside the mouth to reach the damaged area. Although they did gave me general anesthetic, but hearing and seeing was still active throughout. I could feel the drill being used against my face bone to fix the plates using screws. It was the most horrifying 3 hours of my life. The actual pain started once the anesthesia wore off, all i remember then was crying to get the nurse put me on painkillers. Its been one month after surgery, and i'm still healing although felling much better than before

Wow- tooth removal is #14? Shoooooooot I had two of my molars and two of my wisdom teeth removed yesterday and haven’t felt a heckin’ thing barely…. And since technically I live in Central Texas… we have plentiful bean and cheese tamales which constitute some pretty heckin tasty “soft food” so this whole procedure has seemed way less bad than everyone complains about. I haven’t even had to use any painkillers or barely even any NSAIDs afterwards, save for 600mg of ibuprofen immediately after the procedure.
I think I may just have a heckin good doctor or something… cause the guy also only took 30 minutes to pop my teeth out and sew up the gums… and they’re healing up seemingly quickly too.

The most painful thing I’ve ever experienced was breaking hairline fractures over the tiny bones at the top of my foot and messing up the tendons as well and then having to walk around a hotel, pack up my bags and sit on a 8-9 hour bus ride from Canada back to america. All while my fellow classmates didn’t believe me and thought I was faking it. Having an officer come and carry me off the bus at the border was so embarrassing. Hour by hour I had to watch my foot swell up and bruise purple. Not to mention the doctors visit when I got home where they had to cut my leggings and push my foot into position to put my split on…. And the bed sores while sleeping that made me cry all night long… 0/10 would not recommend. Needless to say, it did feel good to walk into class the next day with my broken foot and crutches and having everyone apologize for not believing me and not helping me when I needed them. Lol
