    As a deaf person just know it’s fine and actually really sweet to see new signers, even if you’re a “late learner” which tbh it’s never too late to learn a new language

    thank you for the tips! I was born with a speech disorder (appraxia) and i fluently learned ASL, but that was when i was a toddler, and forgot almost all the signs, so this is a big help to get back into it

    I found Chris' video with the zoo animals last week. This popped up in my feed a few minutes ago. I loved the information but you earned my sub with "cat, I'm a kitty cat; dance dance dance!" That is an oldie but goody video I still watch. I have taken classes several times but I always forget " what you don't use, you will lose". Immersion is so very important to retaining it. It is very hard to get out and meet people when you work 3rd shift. I would love to find someone online to work with me. Thank you both for bringing your knowledge to the proverbial table.

      @ChrisGorges  4 роки тому +1

      Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed the "I'm a cat, I'm a kitty cat" part 😄
      It is so true about losing what you dont use and it can be discouraging when you've lost something you've learned. But as a silver lining, it is much faster to re-learn something then it is to learn it for the first time.
      If you'd like, we are hosting a study group next Monday Feb 17th at 5pm Pacific. You are welcome to join, just send me an email at chris@aslbasics.com and I'll send you a link to the meeting.
      Glad you enjoyed the video and I hope things slow down for you work wise, I know what it's like working crazy hours 😬

    I was born deaf and I was declared autistic because the doctors at the time missed opportunities. I heard first at four. I'm effectively autistic even though I'm not I'm learning ASL. My ear cannals we're not complete required drilling and I eventually got holes in both ears and lost a bone in my best ear responsible for vibrating sound. I am still considered to have perfect hearing for my age at 36 I'd like to contribute more as a translator.

    I have a question, I'm in ASL 1. I am nervous to talk to someone who is deaf with the little ASL i know, I feel like if i tell them I am learning sign language but I keep not understanding them that it is rude. Is it rude to say I know little sign language but struggle in a conversation?

      I think 99% of the time everyone is going to see the effort that you’re putting in trying to learn their language and will see it as a kind gesture.
      I’ve been trying to learn Spanish for many years and I love to speak to people that speak Spanish fluently and they adore when I speak Spanish to them they think it’s funny sometimes when I mess up,never have I been told to stop everyone’s told me that I’m doing really well so I hope your journey goes as well as mine or better.

      That can be difficult, I threw out my should and was in a sling for a while, but for myself I just signed with my other arm until it healed. Keep immersing yourself as much as possible and practice as often as you can and you'll keep making progress. You're welcome to try out our practice group on Zoom tomorrow if you'd like to try using what you've learned with a partner

    What has been your experience with learning ASL?

    • @ChrisGorges
      @ChrisGorges  4 роки тому

      @honextty in the beginning, dont stress to much about the linguistics of the language. Instead, try using what you know to make the communication happen. Most people are really patient and are willing to work with you and try to understand you. The more conversations you have the more you'll become comfortable with the language. Feel free to checkout one of my free classes, "3 keys to fluency" or "the secrets of learning a new language" where I go into more detail about how to overcome various challenges that come with learning a new language. If you are still having a really hard time, feel free to send me an email and I can set up a video call with you

      isn't it a video for people who don't know sign language? not for people who do to critique how they are helping others...? Not that you are saying that, but what would it do to have that in this content?

    • @cherylwilliams42
      @cherylwilliams42 3 роки тому

      @@jaysamples7093 I appreciate your comment. I said what I did because my daughter is hearing impaired and works at a school for the deaf. Sign is ALWAYS used in the present of others on campus and in teaching. It is much like walking into a French class and the teacher will speech only French and expects you to speech only French when you enter the room.
