the way I'm trying to get into movies this year and you post this while I'm getting ready to go see something in theatres!! The stars are aligned people
This is really everything to me lol. Soooo many movies that have been dismissed as "chick flicks" or unserious actually hold so much cultural and cinematic merit. The movies traditionally upheld as great cinema were chosen by men. Movies that were made for women or are about women get judged way more harshly or just left out entirely because men refuse to engage with them. I also feel like a number of movies about women have been dismissed as being "camp" because men refuse to take women seriously.
every thought you had about challengers...YUP, like it was added to my top 4 on letterboxd I will die on its hill, like its everything, it deserves more recognition
As someone who became obsessed with sleepover when I bootlegged it in like 8 parts on youtube when I was 13, I would 100% watch a video essay on why it is actually cinematic genius
I see the thumbnail and I'm in 🤣 Challengers and Babygirl were some of my favorite films this year (yes I'm just a sucker for Harris Dickinson, daddy kinks and a good soundtrack) And I like Halina Reijn as a director, loved her other film 'Instinct'
Omg thank you maddie for mentioning emilia perez!! I cannot believe that this movie which tried so hard to look like inclusive - queer and non white representation - did the communities so dirty and actually didn't gave a fuck about it all and then it gets nominated??! Big buh here
I'm SO glad you mentioned sleepover. I found the DVD years ago and was so excited to relive all the excitement that came with it🥺❤️ the scene when they have to sneak in and steal the underwear? iconic.✨️
as someone who is trying to be more mindful of my media consumption this year (hence I want to watch more movies) this video is everything!! also adore the sweater
As a Hispanic woman, I don't claim Emilia Perez. Literally horrible acting. I love Zoe Saldaña but bruh, she was the only good thing in that movie. Selena Gomez needs a dialect coach. I literally couldn't understand what she was saying 😭 and Spanish is my first language!!
Saltburn was a really cool movie in this genre (in my opinion) like Oliver just had everyone wrapped around his finger. Power dynamics were shifting throughout as well
Some movies are character forward (like Challengers) amd others are plot forward (lets say star wars but i havent watched that) and people want to say one is better than another but its different ways of story telling
My theory is that the assistant orchestrated everything to get the promotion and that's why the intern had the audacity. Because he was also going to get a job out of it.
There are 5 star movies in my head/brain and 5 star movies in my heart. If a movie is fun & exciting and I enjoy 99% of it, 5 stars! It doesn't really matter if it's not critically/generally received that way! Same thing if I see a critically acclaimed & technically stunning movie, but I'm bored by it, it's not getting a good review from me. I ultimately just want to leave the movie hot & bothered, I want to be excited by what I just saw.
omg I missed this. I´m so into movies right now and I need this. You always now what I need Maddie, love it! AND every time some (man)one comes to me now to say that I haven't seen Star Wars I know exactly what to respond!
Dude! Literally! In Babygirl I did not understand what was trying to be said in the background about the whole AI thing they kept bringing up. And it was not having the conversation about power it thought it was having.
I'm so with you on the new year party stuff. The last new year party I went to was SO awful, the venue was horrible, they fucked up the countdown (!!!) AND I got covid from it. I vowed from that moment on I am not going out on new years ever again.
Do you have any content about Challengers? I liked the movie but I was also feel like a good bit might’ve gone over my head lol. I’d be very interested in your take on it
Would LOVE a 30 min video of you talking about Emilia Perez 😂 like reallllyy tell us what you think pleaeeee. Also, Legally Blonde and Mean Girls are in my top four AND I WILL NOT BE LEAD TO BELIEVE THAT I AM LESS THAN BC OF THAT
i went to see babygirl with my mother in theaters the other day and it was pretty fucking uncomfortable but lowkey still fun. she’s never seen an A24 movie before and just kept saying “this is weird she’s so weird what’s even happening” probably too loudly but oh well. i got to explain BDSM/kink concepts to her on the ride home and learn her perspective on faking orgasms which sounds traumatic af but was honesty refreshing and nice. horny movies 4 all (even gen x who might think it’s weird but might also learn stuff? idk)
everything you said about babygirl is exactly what i thought… there was not enough buildup between the characters before samuel made a move. it made no sense???
I watched it last night and it felt like i was reading those trashy adult romance books where there's no plot but the h*rniess was 5 stars... I was disappointed we didn't get more backstory about both... SPOILERS: But who was the person he knew that could end everything for her... Like I need to know!!
this guy i knew kept making fun of me for loving challengers so much and i’m like shut up !! i’m the one with the film degree (something i do think is a silly take but he shouldn’t be yapping so much against a movie that is made so well in my opinion)
i respect ur opinion but i was dreading a backstory while watching babygirl and was so happy there wasn't any. let's leave out the kids even it was a great fantasy movie
As someone who works at a cinema; I have to say PLEASE DO NOT GO TO CINEMAS ON NEW YEARS EVE. A lot of us get rostered on regardless if we request time off because it’s considered our peak season. Companies do not care that young people need their parents to pick them up or older crew have their nights cut short. Plus we don’t get holiday pay
“Not everything needs to be intellectualized …Some things can just be fun!” SAY IT AGAIN FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK
the 2008 chick flick double feature that changed my life was Wild Child and Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging. ART!!
I remember the premiere it was an EVENT
the way I'm trying to get into movies this year and you post this while I'm getting ready to go see something in theatres!! The stars are aligned people
FLEETING FLIRTING PROPAGANDAAAAA LET’S SPREAD IT

I remember renting Sleepover and Mean Girls one weekend in 2005. What a time to be alive
god what an incredible weekend
This is my official request for a "Horny Cinema Tier List". Would love to hear your perspective.

I was looking to see if anyone else has this movie GOATed...cinema!!

the one thing all film lovers can unite on this awards season is a deep disapproval of emilia perez lol
Saltburn was a really cool movie in this genre (in my opinion) like Oliver just had everyone wrapped around his finger. Power dynamics were shifting throughout as well
i agree!! i loved saltburn and will never be bullied into silence about it!!!!
I was reading comments @ 21:34 🤣 I scrolled up so fast lmao you're always making me laugh!
saying you loved Sleepover immediately made me trust your opinions bro
Some movies are character forward (like Challengers) amd others are plot forward (lets say star wars but i havent watched that) and people want to say one is better than another but its different ways of story telling
this was exactly the video i needed from you maddie. 10/10.
My theory is that the assistant orchestrated everything to get the promotion and that's why the intern had the audacity. Because he was also going to get a job out of it.
I knew I would love listening to Maddie talk about films 😂❤
Fab timing as always I literally got back from seeing babygirl

omg I missed this. I´m so into movies right now and I need this. You always now what I need Maddie, love it! AND every time some (man)one comes to me now to say that I haven't seen Star Wars I know exactly what to respond!
Babygirl is directed by Halina van Reijn, a Dutch director. As a Dutchie myself, it makes me happy to see one of our people thriving in the US!
ur takes are literally everything and more
Dude! Literally! In Babygirl I did not understand what was trying to be said in the background about the whole AI thing they kept bringing up. And it was not having the conversation about power it thought it was having.
maddiee u need to see Secretary i think it maybe might blow your mind
it’s on my list!!! moving it up expeditiously
Just agree with everything on this video. Also, gorgeous hair eyeshadow.

MADDIE I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!
1:29 cinematic masterpiece Sleepover (2004) mention
I would be very serious about not seeing the Twilight Saga 🙂↕️ vs not seeing Star Wars 🙄 cause not seeing Twilight surely makes you uncultured 🤷🏾♀️
everything you said about babygirl is exactly what i thought… there was not enough buildup between the characters before samuel made a move. it made no sense???
I love that you have opinions like this, you sexy beast!
