I think the people who made this film were paying attention to the MANY amazing sequels to 80´s movies that came out BEFORE Maverick (like Blade Runner 2049 or Doctor Sleep, to name just a couple).
A country that doesn't exist initiates a war on American for some reason. The fighter jets are not equipped properly. The surface to air missiles have no guidance tower. The attack formations and most terminology were absolutely wrong. It is as stupid as the first one.
When my wife and I walked out of the theater last summer after watching this, we both said this was the best movie we've seen in 20 years. Great story, great feels, no weirdness, just a great movie.
Exactly my thoughts...such nostalgia as it brought back all those fond memories and that "mood" from the 80's when cinema was still not "weird and tainted"...just great entertainment as it used to be.
One of the best legacy films to have ever been made. 13 times in the theaters between IMAX, Dolby Cinema, Digital (and even MX4D). That's how I felt about this film...one I never could have dreamed of in 1986 when I saw the blockbuster original in theaters as a teen. Well done on the reaction. You truly got this film.
I saw it in ScreenX. It was incredible as it wrapped around us onto the side walls of the theater. The only movie I saw more in my life was Star Wars in the mid-70's.
The romance in this film felt so much better than the one in Top Gun. In that film it felt like he was just chasing after a trophy. In this one it really feels like two kindred spirits who have a long and complicated past together, and you can see exactly why Mav likes Penny and why they'd have such great chemistry and mutual respect. They're both free spirits with a love for adventure
They had more chemistry than Charley and Maverick. I never really thought they fit - even when I was young and saw the original in theatres. I just didn't like that they threw them together. She was great in the part though. Guess that's just my opinion.
"Don't get fooled again" was THE perfect piece of music for the dogfight training scenes. So glad you recognised it and have seen them live. They're my favourite band, along with Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. I saw this movie in an IMAX cinema with my wife, who isn't a Who fan, but even she was amazed at the fit.
Pilot callsigns are usually given out by a pilot's squadron-mates, and they usually base it on something that the pilot might find embarrassing. Very few actual cool callsigns like Maverick out there. Goose would be realistic if it was based on him being chased by a goose or something.
Joe "Hoser" Satrapa got his after he emptied his Crusader's guns on a ground target and missed with all of them. There was a female pilot with the callsign "Stacks", yes she was, another was called "Slick" cause her landings during her 14 RAG were not "slick" and was just one bad landing from being kicked out, she recovered and later picked up a less embarrassing callsign "Vargas" and did a combat tour with the F-14 over Iraq before transitioning to F/A-18's
I saw an interview of Tom Cruise talking about his F-14 training prior to the original Top Gun. His pilot’s call sign was “Bozo.” When TC’s head was down between his knees, his pilot pulled up hard, which forced TC’s head lower. He tried to get the pilot to let up but wasn’t heard. When he finally let up, TC said, “why did you do that? Couldn’t you see I was bent over?” And his pilot replied, “Now you know why they call me Bozo.”
Apparently Penny in this film is supposed to be the "admiral's daughter" that Maverick "went ballistic" with. That's another fun little nod to the original film, and gives their characters an established backstory.
In the Navy it's normally one of 3 ways. Last name of the officer, the officer's personality traits or most commonly an embarrassing situation that happens to them. Every now and then it can also come from a hometown too. A wingman of mine who actually was a TOPGUN graduate is still stuck with the callsign "Punchout" due to a seat malfunction that blew her out of her aircraft. I got lucky and mine came both from my last name and my attitude when it came to enemies. I tended to "Hammer" in the idea it was a huge mistake screwing with the US or allies.
The same holds true for the Air Force. For my son, his call sign is a nod to his home state and also to an embarrassing incident that happened on an early mission. It started as a way for fellow squadron pilots to tease him about what happened and stuck as his call sign.
This movie captures the chaos so well in the final scenes. The rapid cutting from cockpit to cockpit and hearing "Dagger 1 Defending, Dagger 2 Defending, Its on your six Dagger 1, I see it, smoke in the air.." followed by the wide shot of missles zipping across the screen and every fighter doing their own defense is so good.
Usu. The call signs are awarded by the squadron. Most often by the other more senior members. I've heard of the enlisted also being asked to come up with one, usu the aircraft crew since they have the most contact with the pilot. I remember one pilot call sign was "Ripper". He was an officer assigned to my unit on his ground tour.
First of all, how am I just seeing your channel now? Second, You're by far the bestest movie reactor on UA-cam!! You don't talk every single sec and stop it, so its impossible to follow. Your editing is perfect and your so cool! I loved Top Gun as I am a total 80's chic! One of the best sequels! Great reaction!! I'm from Philly, so I cant wait to binge Rocky with u!
Couple fyi. Penny is the Admiral daughter talked about at beginning of first Topgun. And in end fight left 33 shots left in gun to commemorate the 33 years sinc3 first movie at time of filming
5:02 "Don't know what that means, buy yaayyy!!" Not sure if someone else in the comments mentioned this already, but a 'Mach number' is the speed ratio relative to the speed of sound, so "Mach 1.0" is when you would hit/break the sound barrier [and get the fabled 'sonic boom' that shatters windows]. Most commercial jets fly well below this, between Mach 0.6 and Mach 0.9. "Mach 10" is ten times the speed of sound. So yeah, pretty fast. 36:07 Aaaaahhh, a southpaw... * polite clap * Great reaction vid. I absolutely _love_ this movie and seeing other people enjoy it for the first time. ;o)
I know this comment is very late, but I just learned this from an ex-pilot: the movie is so well-researched that at the climax, there's an accurate real-life reason why Rooster's ejection seat won't work: the F-14 had a safety feature that required the pilots to manually arm the ejection seat every time they got in, but Rooster was never trained on the F-14 so he wouldn't have known that.
When i was a kid (80's) there was a big thing about Muammar Gaddafi's compound being bombed by the US. We missed him but got a few of his family members including a daughter. I am only like 70 percent sure that is correct because i barely care now and didn't at all then. What stuck in my brain was that the pilots that dropped the bombs got no medals or recognition showing their involvement for fear that a terrorist would do what they could for retribution. So when you ask if these missions ever really happen i am sure they do. IRL these missions would be done with drones.
The way (in the real Navy/Air Force) pilots get their callsigns is a little complicated. Sometimes, it's because of a personality trait, like 'Goofy', or 'Nap-Time' if they're always sleepy; or a play on their name, like 'Soup' Campbell, 'Flash' Gordon; or 'Bob' (realistic) because they 'look' like a 'Bob'; but sometimes it can be because of a story, usually embarrassing. The rare awesome callsigns are treasured, Kim 'Killer Chick' Campbell (decorated A-10 pilot).
This is the first and only movie I have ever paid to see in the theater twice and have watched it 2x more at home since then . Waited a long time for this movie . I was a Freshman in High School when Top Gun came out . My daughter is now a Senior in High School .
That Gauge the went 10.0---10.1 was a Mach Meter . 10 times the speed of Sound . Faster than a Missile . Most people think this was actually better than the Original . Finished the Story . Tie the Loose ends . In a Pretty Bow .
That’s right so much stuff. I did 10 years in the military, back when there wasn’t cell phones, and no social media. Many would be amazed or afraid, with what actually happened throughout the years. Some was documented on 35mm. I was based in San Diego, you’re right about the awesome Mexican food. And, Of course, in n out burger 🍔
Its missed a lot but if you look at the number "hangman" presses on the jukebox it's a salute to when the first movie came out. He presses 86 and no one in the cast or crew caught it till a lot later in post production. the first movie came out in 1986.
I have watch this 8 times Paramount channel . Great movie. I am retired from the fire service and over the years had a chance to work with military pilots, they are very smart and very good at what they do.
"What do you say about something that's perfect?" You say "thank you" to everyone who helped make one of the best sequels....best movies....ever. I loved the original, but this one is just so much better. I completely agree that the whole scene with Maverick and Penny at her house was tastefully done. That whole relationship, versus the romance in the original, is one reason I like this movie so much more. This video is my introduction to your channel, and I was already planning on subscribing at the end....and then you cemented it with that Office clip! 😁 More of that please! You have a new subscriber!
The song "You're Right Where You Belong/Give Em Hell" is a masterpiece. The music is somber, and you can feel the steady uneasy nervousness rise in your throat as it contiunes and we see every member of the team for what could be the last time. But as the song changes from "You're right where you belong" to "Give em Hell" it simulates the adrenaline kicking in. The change from fear of doing to fear of failing and you realize something. There isn't any time to contemplate the fact you might not make it home. You think too much up there, and you're dead.
I've watched this movie 37 times. Twice in the theater and 35 times on my fire cube. So I'm with you on this movie. I gave it a 9.9 out of 10. I couldn't give it a 10 because the original Top Gun is a 10 in my eyes. The plane, in the end, was Tom's plane.
Top Gun Maverick is superior in every way to the original. The only logical reason why one would rate the first one higher than its successor is because of the way one "remembers" the first time they saw the original Top Gun. Imax cameras have never captured such reactions of actors flying on F-18's. The reason why it's so effective is because of the "state transfer" from the actors onto the audiences; the audiences can almost feel what the pilots feel as they're experiencing real G-forces-again this has never been done before, let alone so masterfully.
I used to work at Hangar two (top gun). And yes, best Mexican food. I knew of a family-owned taco place that made wonderful taquitos and a big bowl of guacamole. Plus it was open at midnight, which was best, because that's when I got off duty.
THIS! Absolutely this! My fafther and I watched the original Top Gun when I was a kid. We both loved the movie so much and for myself, it started my love for aviation, Jets and Helicopters. It was one of my favorite movies of all times. I knew there were talks about a sequel, mostly being "The next Top Gun will be about drone fights" and it felt like a huge letdown. I swear, as a kid, I listened to the original Soundtrack on cassette all day long and when I sat in cinema a while ago, the trailers came and I just heard that "gong" at the beginning of the main title, I jumped out my seat and yelled "The new Top Gun!". I was about to take my dad to the cinema (I'm 41 now), but sadly, he died half a year before Top Gun Mavaerick released in cinemas. I just wish he could have seen this film, because I know he'd have loved it as much as I do. So... the story between Maverick, Goose and Rooster means even more to me. I am so happy that there have been sooooo many people who saw the movie and were impressed. This is a true masterpiece of movie entertaninment to me.
Took my wife to see it she isnt a action movie fan but we got the seats that moved to the fighter jet sequences after the movie she said it was one of the coolest movies she had ever seen
In the 80's there were a string of compelling "military"movies, culminating in "Top Gun". I recommend " An Officer and a Gentleman" and "Lords of Discipline" as a start- both with loose connections to "Top Gun"
If I were the script writer or director, I'm changing the film in only one way. When Mav is told "Just don't break her heart again" , my cut would have Maverick walk right back into the home run upstairs to Penny, showing Maverick grinning from ear to ear heading up the stairs, and then rack focusing back to Amelia, also grinning, and cutting to Penny with at first a confused look, and then a smile. No dialog, maybe a sustained orchestral chord, 5 seconds top. In this way, two tensions are set up. 1) Mav being grounded is assured to affect Penny, and 2) Maverick flying the mission is also a greater fear and risk for Penny.
You may have been to Top Gun it is in Miramar, Ca. Tom Cruise made $11 million dollar in this role. All the jets used were between $30-$200 million dollars. Call signs for fighter pilots much like motorcycle clubs derivative of a last name, physical features, personalities or pop culture. Val Kilmer really does have throat cancer. Val Kilmer had a surgery in 2014 forever altered Kilmer's natural voice. Top Gun helped recruiting in the 80’s right now the only branches meeting recruiting goals is the Marine Corps and the Space Force. I like to see he will still buzz the tower
@37:12 - "How are we going to get this museum piece in the air" is a joke, because the F-14 they were using for these shots actually came from a museum.
I'm showing my age here, but every last reviewer on this film wonders how Maverick will land the F-14 without the front wheel....and I'm thinking, if they'd seen "The Final Countdown"(1980), they'd know all about a net capture procedure on aircraft carriers.
Saw this in cinema and it was awesome on big screen. Best movie I've seen in a long long time. Every actor was perfect for the role they played. Tom Cruise definitely knows how to make a sequel. He held this back for 2 years for cinema release and it paid off big time. Great story, amazing filming and action sequences. I saw the original in cinemas back when it was released too. This one is actually better but I love both films. The callbacks to the original were fantastic, so many references.
Penny Benjamin is actually referenced in the first Top Gun as a general’s daughter is had a thing with back in the day, but she was never seen in that movie
I like it when the F-14 passes the SU-57 in the fight scene as it looks like it is just hanging in mid air . These pilots are that skilled . The pilot that "maverick" in the flying as you see him with the camera shoots over his shoulder flying the AC was a Blue angle pilot too.
Defining Mach numbers: Mach 1 is the speed of sound, which anything over said number is “supersonic” (sonic meaning sound waves), just as the a day tech noted that Roster’s ESAT was supersonic. Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound, and so on. Mach 5 is considered “hypersonic”, and Mach 10 is “Ultrasonic.” The SR-71 Blackbird officially went over Mach 3, and is the fastest plane that can take off and land in unassisted. The X-15, which launched from a drop plane, in 1967 went Mach 6.7 with Pete Knight. This is the fastest anyone has traveled in atmosphere in a plane. Since a mock number is defined by the speed of sound, the actual ground speed changes, depending on altitude, air density, temperature, humidity, etc. So the SSC Thrust land speed record holder, actually went faster than Chuck Yeager in the X-1, simply because sound travels faster at sea level than it does at high altitude.
i love movies. the thing i will say is it's not often they can make a sequel and it keep the story line going. I've only seen this happen a couple times and this movie is one of them. by far the best movie for the year and it was a great addition to the original.
I’m not sure if anyone else mentioned this in the comments, but to explain the term “Mach”, it’s a measure of speed. It also corresponds with the speed of sound, which is 767.3 miles per hour. Therefore, Mach 1 = 767.3 mph and then obviously Mach 10 = 7673 mph. ✌🏼😎
It means he got the plane to go 10 times the speed of sound or something over 7000 miles per hour. There is some skepticism being expressed as to whether he could have ejected at that speed without important appendages (like his head) being errr damaged.
The whole cockpit would detach (escape crew capsule) like the F-111, or the B1-A. The feature was not carried over for the B1-B because it is considerably slower than the "A" model.
Did you get the Easter egg? When Maverick first meets Penny(Jennifer Connely) in the bar!! Music by David Bowie plays in the background, with whom she filmed Labyrinth when she was 16.
Appreciate the "The Who" observations. I thought this was an excellent marriage of background music to support action on the screen which translated to a great film sequence.
As for "Call Signs", most all pilots get their call signs bestowed onto them by their first flying squadron. They are given it by their fellow seasoned, veteran pilots of the squadron. As most times it's not flattering, although appropriate. Such as "Maverick", which is cool, although it does show that he likes to do things alone and by his own rules . . . thus, Maverick. As for "theme music", it would've been a "overkill" a little too "80's". As with your on-point observation of the love scene with Penny, they didn't need to do another 80's-type love scene to a love ballad (i.e Berlin's Take My Breath Away). Lastly, when you think about it, "Goose" was all over this movie. He was constantly referred to, and became the constant-companion-advisor for both Pete "Maverick" and Bradley "Rooster". Pete is Maverick no-more. He will now have a wife & daughter, and a son; as they will become family, and watch over one another . . . they will become each others "Goose". GREAT REACTION!
A love the amount of military laws that were broken in both movies. If this were real life, Maverick would have been either executed (that is right, you can be executed for destroying military property, including buzzing a tower) or spending many years in a military prison.
Irony.....the pilot Bob, his dad in real life is Bill Pullman who played the president/pilot in the movie, independence Day! The actors flew every day for 90 minutes at a time, and had to correct their own makeup, helmets, gear, volume, cameras, etc.! Penny was mentioned in the first movie! The plane in the end is actually Tom's! Rooster actually played the piano! Penny drives the same era, and silver, that Charlie drove! Hangman was a combination of young Iceman, and young maverick...he is obviously the best pilot, like young Ice, and a real narcissistic attitude like young Maverick! And also my favorite character!! Val kilmer, Iceman has throat cancer in real life.
I subscribed just be ause you have 5 kids, you poor thing lol I'm watching your video now, already liked 👍 I saw TGM twice at Cinemas (you should of seen it on the big screen...amazing) and 3 times on Bluray, again last week....One of the best crowd pleasing films ever made 😁 "Talk to me Goose"
Just an FYI - Mach is the term used for the speed of sound. So whenever a sound is made the speed that sound travels is 761 miles per hour. That speed is called Mach. So Mach 1 is 761 miles per hour. So, do the math - what is Mach 10?
This is such an amazing sequel. I hope Hollywood was paying attention to the thought that went into this film.
I think the people who made this film were paying attention to the MANY amazing sequels to 80´s movies that came out BEFORE Maverick (like Blade Runner 2049 or Doctor Sleep, to name just a couple).
I’m sure they weren’t lol
Nah Hollywood is focused on "Controlling the Culture" than making great movies, with great storytelling, and full of shortcuts via excessive CGI.
A country that doesn't exist initiates a war on American for some reason. The fighter jets are not equipped properly. The surface to air missiles have no guidance tower. The attack formations and most terminology were absolutely wrong. It is as stupid as the first one.
Hollywood noticed the box office returns, but will ignore the care and effort that was required to create that movie magic.
33:41 Of course, Maverick is going to buzz the tower! 🤣
"Talk to me dad" and "I'm sorry, Goose" get me every time.

Maybe because it’s age appropriate romance

Damn... this one hits hard.

Thank you I've often wondered this myself.
I read a article where a pilot from Georgia was called "Peaches" and he wasn't enjoying it
Joe "Hoser" Satrapa got his after he emptied his Crusader's guns on a ground target and missed with all of them.

How do you explain "Viper" then?
He's up there touching Heaven and says "talk to me Goose."
Chills. In a sequel and a movie I have no business getting chills in.
You got real quiet during the beach scene. 😂
Looks are everything
When you bailed asking for theme music 🎶 WTF scene was epic

Everybody needs a friend like Hondo who can steal and F-18 for you just so you can prove a point.

Fun fact: that’s actually Tom Cruise’s personal P-51
The bit of a Bowie/Labyrinth Easter Egg in the first bar scene with Jennifer Connelly was awesome!

Navy aviators do not press their wings into coffins. That's a Navy SEAL thing.
My favorite parts are
1. "It's a nice moment... Don't ruin it..."
2. "You told me not to think..."

The general consensus is that this overall is a better movie than the first, and the first is a classic
First review I have seen where you laugh when mav pushes rooster..tell him not to think...finally!!
24:32 I was an Aviation Ordnanceman for 8 years on the LHD-3 USS Kearsarge. Every 3-6 months.

when i watch it the first time the music at the begining give me a big goose bumps ! feel so nostalgic .
I remember seeing it back in 86 on premiere day here in Costa Rica... I had the same experience 30+ years in IMAX... worth the wait!
For shooting aerial scenes, the crew used a CineJet aircraft, which is a modified L-39 from Aero Vodochody, Czech Republic 🇨🇿
I watched this recently with my 33 year old son. This is not the genre he typically chooses. He was in awe, and I was surprised how much he liked it.
Best movie in YEARS!
The one thing I dont get is how Rooster doesnt get credit for blowing up the helicopter lol
It's funny how no one mentions that. Rooster would be credited with an aerial victory now.
Backseaters in 2-man aircraft also get credit. So with Rooster downing the helicopter and being backseater for Mav in the F-14, he’s got 3
Damn and I thought that going 5 times to the theater just to watch it over again was too much lol
I would've liked that ending exchange to be:
Mav: Thank you for saving my life.
Rooster: Bullshit, you saved mine.
The favorite part, literally the 'Nice' part.
It’s so rare to have a proud, happy, loving stay at home mom. I have all the respect in the world for you.
Tells him to eject but forgets to tell him to unlock the ejection handles and arm the seats
Perfect sequel movie ever. Your reaction was nice and wonderful, as well as very enjoyable.
Penny who owns the bar is Penny Benjamin, who got Maverick demoted in the first movie because she was an admirals daghter.
If an aircraft were actually capable of reaching Mach 10 it would be the equivalent of going 7,410.9699 Miles per Hour.
Best movie of 2022! I grew up with the original Top Gun and I love it. and the sequel is even better!
Super late, but pilots get there call signs, typically, from just random stuff. The way someone gets a nickname, that's basically how it goes
Penny Benjamin is actually referenced in the first Top Gun as a general’s daughter is had a thing with back in the day, but she was never seen in that movie
fun fact the cost of a single block IV Tomahawk (the one that they are using) is $2,000,000
Remember Goose died in the 1st TOP GUN. That's why they used miles teller as his son in top gun maverick.
I like it when the F-14 passes the SU-57 in the fight scene as it looks like it is just hanging in mid air . These pilots are that skilled . The pilot that "maverick" in the flying as you see him with the camera shoots over his shoulder flying the AC was a Blue angle pilot too.
It was a former Blues pilot who did the really low level stuff. There was at least one other fleet pilot who flew as Maverick.
@@yxeaviationphotog I worked with a lot of pilots back in the day, they are something!!!!
Defining Mach numbers:
Mach 1 is the speed of sound, which anything over said number is “supersonic” (sonic meaning sound waves), just as the a day tech noted that Roster’s ESAT was supersonic.
Anyone else notice how she didn't say one word during the gratuitous football skin scene? hehehe
Hey, Cruise still can hold his won with all those younger guys. He was about 58 here and didn't look too shabby. Can probably outrun most of them too.
Mom of 5?? God bless ya, sweetie! One was enough for my wife and I. We had him late. He's now 20. Mom and I are 55.
i love movies. the thing i will say is it's not often they can make a sequel and it keep the story line going. I've only seen this happen a couple times and this movie is one of them. by far the best movie for the year and it was a great addition to the original.
It is better than the first one. I saw it 9 times in the Theater. Freaking loved it! Perfect movie
I find it funny that most people think of Hangman as being like Iceman, but he isnt - he is like Maverick in the first film: arrogant, loose cannon.
Great watch through loved this film, one of my best memories of 2022
Amazing movie.. ❤Your reactions were wonderful too😊
Your couch looks cool, where’d you get it?
😄Weekends Only
says she loves movies then immediately proceeds to saying she falls asleep during movies 😅
😂 That's not because I don't enjoy them, I promise!
@@movieswithmom right, suuuuure… just kidding 😂
Call signs are voted on by their peers - you do not get to pick your own. Usually it is related to your biggest screw up
I agree. Best Mex food in Old Town just off the green line, if you can get a table.
"Blazing Saddles"(1974)Mel Brooks
"Caddyshack"(1980)Rodney Dangerfield
"Uncle Buck"(1989)John Candy
Badass reaction Mom!!!! Really love watching movies with you!!!💯👍💯👍
The plane during the end credits is Tom Cruises plane. Amazing movie
That's actually Tom Cruise P51 at the end that he's flying
A love the amount of military laws that were broken in both movies. If this were real life, Maverick would have been either executed (that is right, you can be executed for destroying military property, including buzzing a tower) or spending many years in a military prison.
Ah Mramar. I served there for a bit. Sea world. ICR in Santee. Balboa park. Nerdrotic lived there and was smart to get out.
"Mach 10" is ten times speed of sound.
I went to a Who concert in St. Louis (checkerdome, before your time). in 1980
❤ Movies with mom. I watched this when I was 6 with my mom. I was very happy to watch the sequel with her. I will always love you my mom 👩 ❤
Great reaction! Thank you for sharing. It is a great film and so well done. You and Jennifer "Penny Benjamin" Connelly could be sisters!
I subscribed just be ause you have 5 kids, you poor thing lol
I'm watching your video now, already liked 👍
I saw TGM twice at Cinemas (you should of seen it on the big screen...amazing) and 3 times on Bluray, again last week....One of the best crowd pleasing films ever made 😁
"Talk to me Goose"
You got an excellent voice my brother, Praise God!
Just an FYI - Mach is the term used for the speed of sound. So whenever a sound is made the speed that sound travels is 761 miles per hour. That speed is called Mach. So Mach 1 is 761 miles per hour. So, do the math - what is Mach 10?
Music of _The Who_, in a Simpson/Bruckheimer production. Who knew?
