My father was in Vietnam and during that time he was exposed to Agent Orange. Afterwards, over the years, he had over 5 different types of cancers. Not only that he had his hips replaced, twice, his shoulders replaced. For the longest time the VA were refusing to cover him. He fought for coverage for years, until he was able to get the coordinates of where he was deployed, proving he was exposed. Eventually, from all the radiation and chemotherapy, had destroyed a valve in his heart, that they eventually replaced, but all of that led to him finally succumbing to congestive heart failure. He is respectful, kind, and does what he has to in order to keep going from day to day. They just assumed he'd do it after taking one look at him. He's still living with the consequences today. The amount of rage I have towards a country that swears it's the land of the free while convicting and ruining the lives of innocents just because they can.... It's indescribable. You were robbed of a childhood because of our criminal justice system that only seeks to criminalize and punish innocent Americans, and lets actual criminals and murderers walk free like Kyle Rittenhousee
My heart goes out to you and your family❤. You didn’t deserve this and your father didn’t deserve it either. Your father is not a criminal. He is an innocent man being punished for somebody else’s crimes.
But I promise you, I will fight until my last breath to speak out on behalf of people like you and your father. Because you are worth fighting for. You were born and raised in this country that has done everything in its power to turn you and your family into criminals and in the process has turned you and your family into victims. And somehow Americans expect you to be grateful for that.
There aren’t enough people sticking their necks out to do the right thing, but there are plenty of people sticking their noses out to turn innocent people into criminals because they don’t know how to mind their own damn business and have nothing better to do with their lives
I’m so sorry for what this country has put you through. I am so sorry for what this country has done to you and your family. You deserve a hell of a lot better than that. Please God stay safe and God bless you and your family always. Pray to God if your father comes home soon. ❤🙏

Absolutely hit the nail on the head with the on-set injury story.
I'm a filmmaker & stuntman in New Zealand, and while working on The Rings of Power was a dream come true for a lot of the new generation of filmmakers, the way Amazon treated us was cartoonishly evil, and to make matters worse, WE ended up paying the price for it, not them.
Everybody in the industry here knows how bad the injuries were on that set, and it wasn't just stunties. The conditions on that gig were particularly brutal. The hours were long, even by filmmaking standards (for those not in the know, 11 hour days are the standard...so when you gotta push into overtime and work weekends that's usually 80+ hour weeks back to back) and since everyone hired is a contractor, not an employee, we get no benefits beyond a "bare minimum effort" pay bump.
Here's the fucked up part with this particular example:
New Zealand had to fight tooth and nail to get season 1 of RoP filmed here (what with how important the prestige of Lord of the Rings has been for the country tourism-wise...we had to sorta take the raw deal for fear of them filming somewhere else), so it was a big deal when the representatives of the local filmmakers came to the negotiating table for season 2 to basically say "look, you can not treat us like that again. We're happy to do season 2 for you, but you gotta at least guarantee more humane hours or sick/hazard pay or something".
Amazon immediately cut negotiations & booked season 2 to be filmed in Scotland. If I'm not mistaken, season 2 is already wrapped there & I'm gonna go out on a limb & assume the scots were not treated the way we were asking to be treated.
People who work in the industry are desensitized & used to this grueling lifestyle...it's sick, but it's what we're passionate about so we hunker down & deal with it to do what we love. The problems multiply when stunts are introduced: everybody from the performers themselves to the crew managing the equipment keeping everybody safe needs to be sharp in order to keep things as safe as possible...but how can you do that when you're on your 14th hour of your 6th day because production doesn't wanna go through the hassle of scheduling another week?
    Anyway, fuck Amazon.

I used to be an Assistant Director in the film industry in the UK. I saw many near misses and accidents during my tenure on set involving crew and stunts. Despite the risk assessments, planning and safety awareness, people I know were injured and even killed. There is a mentality on sets that, once in a location, they can do whatever they want. A much-loved cameraman named Mark Milsome was killed in a car stunt that went wrong in Kenya. My understanding of the event was that the stunt was supposed to take place in the UK but they decided at the last minute to shoot it while they were in Kenya. Becuase of the lack of planning, the stunt went wrong and Mark was killed. The industry has changed since I left but not enough to stop this and other deaths in the future.

You can hate Netanyahu and Hamas at the same time. Look it up, it is a fact that Netanyahu's government propped up Hamas thinking they'd be effective control over the people of Palestine, but not too effective that they'd ever organize against him. He allowed billions of dollars worth of Qatari money to enter Palestine, on the assumption they'd focus on governance over organizing an attack.
He was wrong. And I full on do not believe he didn't know an attack was coming when nations allied to Israel warned him of a possible attack. Now, he's saying that the group he's allowed funding to reach for over a decade, the group he was happy to allow to grow wasn't his fault, that the attack on his people wasn't his fault. He's only keeping this military conflict going to maintain power and to cover his ass.
Hate Hamas, but don't bunch them and every Palestinian in the same boat. Netanyahu has ordered attacks on dozens of civilian and refugee centers rather than sending his own military in, because to him its better to blow up men, women, and children just trying to survive than it is to risk a single soldier to more effectively put down a threat.
He's a war criminal, and him telling anyone in the US not to use our god given right to free speech and assembly is laughable when he has droves of his own people telling him to step down.

The driver was in his 80s and didn't see my husband crossing the road, throwing him over the truck and leaving him with a concussion and soft tissue damage. It's been nearly 3 and a half years and he is still living with a TBI and has significant body pain every day - just this week he got a migraine that caused vomiting - something he never had experienced before his accident.
WCB was a joke to deal with, they argued constantly against his injuries because of a useless doctor who yelled at us that nobody pays her to fill out WCB forms. And my husband's union was no help either - they referred us to their WCB rep who was impossible to get ahold of and had no useful information whatsoever.
These 3 and a half years have been fvcking brutal, and it's made even harder by the fact that we have a 6 year old daughter who doesn't have memories of her dad before his accident while working for a HBO production - a production who also gave no shits about their employee who was impacted forever while working for them.

I doubt that stunt worker will see any justice until he sues them. I was an Amazon employee, on his way into work, when an Amazon truck pulled in front of me. I could've easily died in that accident and did break my wrist in 6 places with damage to my back as well. I had evidence upon evidence backing me up along with admission of guilt from the other driver. It took a year to start the proceedings and then they fought back and forth on the payout so I had to sue. Granted, it was the third party liability company we were negotiating with but it still ultimately took 2 full years to finish out. Not to mention my needed care afterwards and lasting effects. I couldn't imagine being in his scenario with, more than likely, a waiver or some other sort of legal gymnastics to go through for something they don't even need to admit to be at fault for. I think there is a difference between someone being inappropriate and someone who is grooming. Grooming is a very specific and disturbing thing, done on purpose to prepare a vulnerable mind for a relationship later. Courtney Stodden was groomed by her husband, while she was a minor, so that he could take advantage of her. He abused the power dynamic between them for his own sexual gratification. That is grooming. Making in appropriate jokes around minors is a different violation. It's still completely unacceptable, but it isn't grooming.
It's important not to dilute the meaning of words just because you want to apply the connotation of a term to someone you don't like. We can condemn Ava's behavior and question whether she should ever be allowed to work with kids, without pretending that she was doing something, she simply wasn't doing.

I also think part of the problem in this whole Israel v Palestine dialogue is that we aren't addressing the critical issues of either side. Israel doesn't acknowledge the civilian death toll and the pro-Palestinian camp doesn't acknowledge Hamas. Netanyahu kind of has a point when he said gays for Gaza is like saying chickens for KFC. Hamas is an evil and brutal regime and is a danger to not only Israel but its own people. Hi team Phil! I really really want to thank you for covering and diving into the story about film set accidents and stunt performer injuries/deaths. I played the Predator in the 2018 sequel movie and I can say without a doubt that everything you said is true. Although I’m still a card carrying SAG-AFTRA Stunt actor, I don’t really work anymore because of a negligent on set injury that I suffered while working on the pilot of Lovecraft Country. I was doing a big jump while riding a wire and despite 20 great rehearsals, when we went to film the wire was too short and i got pulled into the hill, tearing my shoulder. I was hurt in 2018 but I didn’t receive compensation or surgery until last year. The red tape they put you through is maddening and it was basically a full time job that I had to work just to get them the info they asked for. All while suffering from the pain. Although I got something, what I lost was so much more. I was an illustrator and had a graphic novel publishing deal with a large publisher but I lost it because of my injury. I lived with chronic pain for so long that I forgot who I was before it and I lost a lot of friends because I wasn’t the fun loving person they used to see me as. I can’t express enough how true it is that we’re afraid to speak up when hurt. Mainly for the fear of being blacklisted and also because the culture really promotes this toxically masculine idea of just enduring it.
Film productions try to cut corners and overly focus on budget which results in the stunt performers (not to mention everyone else working hard on the crew) to be rushed while trying to do very delicate work. People think we’re supposed to get hurt but we’re not, we’re the ones that take the calculated risks for the benefit of the film/show. In my case it wasn’t even my fault I got hurt but the negligence of the production and the direction who were so in a rush that neglected to make sure my wire was the right length. I was really lost for a while but now I’m in school for Massage Therapy because after that experience I want to be able to help people who suffer from chronic pain.
Anyway, sorry for the long comment. I just really want to express my appreciation for you.
    I feel seen

Im sure we would all be in tears if we, average citizens, knew how many life changing Bills and Laws have been blocked or denied just to spite the other party. Or to make sure one party stays in the majority over the other. How amazing this country could truly be if our elected officials used their power to enact change, instead of crippling the people they serve just to retain power. The whole point of our government set up is to meet in the middle and make sure no parties extremist views are the law of the land. The whole point of compromise is for everyone to be a little unsatisfied, but happy none the less.

“They hold up signs that say Gays for Gaza” yeah it’s almost as if we don’t have to agree with people in order to feel empathy for them. It’s basic human decency, actually. The angle of “the murder of civilians is fine if they disagree with me” is not the moral win that Netanyahu thinks it is.

So Netanyahu is immoral and wrong because Palestinian civilians have been killed, but fine for Hamas killing Israeli civilians? Palestine is not innocent, and people need to stop defending one while criticizing the other, when they both commit the same crimes.

@@alfredgreybeard Where the hell did you read ''it is fine for Hamas killing Israel civilians''. Let me guess, in your mind because it is the only excuse you have to justify Israel's war crimes. Here is the basic difference, let me spell it out for you. Hamas is not Palestine itself and Netanyahu is not Israel itself, no matter how much they try to show it as. And they both can be criticized and condemned for the CRIMES they committed. Both Netanyahu's party and Hamas HAS TO GO to have any chance of a resolution because the war only benefits these two groups while innocents from BOTH SIDES are the ones that are dying.

    • @emmalynn877
      @emmalynn877 2 місяці тому +9

@@alfredgreybeard Yes, Netanyahu is immoral and wrong because he’s ordering the murder of civilians. Correct. I won’t criticise Palestine because Palestine have not done anything wrong here. Hamas are the people you’re referring to when talking about violence against Israelis, not the innocent men, women, and children that are constantly being bombed and executed for Hamas’ crimes. These are every day people; just like your neighbours, your parents, your friends. This rhetoric that they’re terrorists or aggressors is the exact rhetoric that Russia used when it invaded Ukraine and tried to spread the idea that Ukrainians were Nazis and that Russia was the good guys for killing them. Funny how everyone could see that bullshit for what it was when it was white people who were on the receiving end of it instead of Arabs.

@SabinaS.N.O.W. It’s such a low blow and honestly is very manipulative. To take an intimate part of someone’s self and try to use it as a prop or a weapon to get them to bend to your will is twisted. Especially from someone trusted. And empathy shouldn’t be transactional anyway. People shouldn’t have to care about us in order for us to care about them. If someone dislikes me being bisexual, then whatever. I’m still going to continue to care about their wellbeing on a human-to-human level.
