I just want a remind everyone that Amanda Bynes was one of the first former actresses to be vocal about Dan Schneider, accusing him of SA and such. No one listened. They shrugged it off as her having a mental breakdown(ignoring the years of trauma is likely what CAUSED it)

FGM victim here, done under the guise of cultural tradition and religion. It caused me heap of trauma and health problems I do not think will ever be fixed.
What’s ironic is one of the reasons people want to do FGM is to ‘curb women’s sexual appetite’ but then you’ll see almost all of them complain that their SO are ‘frigid’ and ‘sexually inactive’.
It’s ridiculous and has nothing to do with religion, this as always throughout history was a way to demean and control women, and these men do not want to let go of that control.

I am sorry that you had to deal with that, this is my first time hearing of this and it's just (I honestly can not put my feelings into words) fucked up. It is sad religion has been used throughout history to benefit and keep the people in power when It should be something to better the loves of people not do them harm. I also can not understand how people can argue something is part of their religion when it is not in the doctrine that said religion follows. I am not a religious person at all however I try to be a good person that I can be proud of looking back on life when it is my time to leave life behind. One final thought, if there is a God out there and we are products of him like he created us or thought us into existence wouldn't we be beautiful in their eyes so I feel it would be more of an affront to them to mutilate said creation(I also think if there were a God that they wouldn't mind us doing things to our own. Bodies like tattoos or piercing as a form of self expression) so wouldn't the people doing these unspeakable things to keep a part of the population down really be the evil in the eyes of said god? I was raised Christian and had a horrible grandma who always talked about everyone else who was doing wrong and judging them and was overly religious and was sure she would go to heaven but if there is a heaven and he'll she is most definitely in hell because she was a terrible human being she was racist who married a man who was mixed race and would use the n word and other slurs for every other spin color than her own, she was homophobic yet she left her husband a few times to run off with her lesbian partner and my mom remembers the lady always being around for everything during her childhood, and the worst of all she never accepted all of the horrible things she did and what a terrible person she was until it affected her personal life and the day her first born grandchild(me) which was apperently some big thing for her culture or something told her that she was no longer part of his life and that she would never hear from me again which she never did although she sent a letter apology for all the things she did wrong to me but also not a single word of remorse for all the other horrible things she did and i did go to her funeral but that was for my moms sake not hers and i still have the letter but i read it to remind myself of what not to be.
Again I am sorry that you and others have to deal with stuff like this I hop one day that practices like this are all banned. I wouldn't go as far to say religions should be banned because i believe that they do benefit a lot of people and cause less fear of the unknown but at the same time many religions need an update on thier views on women and gay rights and other things and just accept we are all humans and should all be working for the betterment of humankind together not hating one another or working for our own self interest, imagine if we had a world like that where we all were willing to lend a hand to someone in need or share in the excess food/wealth/medical knowledge that many countries have with other countries that dont live in an area where they can grow everything they need from the land they have. Sorry for the long rant but i think that if any of the founders of the religions were to see where they are at and how followers of these religions act they would all be horrified.

It's sadly a culture of fiending for success that also drives this. I worked for a digital radio station in Hollywood as a data analyst in the early 2010's. When I was there I met a radio programmer who was in charge of a couple of less popular genres and he would often bring his 15 year old daughter with him to work. She was supposedly homeschooled and the dad did this so that she could network with other people. By herself. She was a model. When I asked him what it was like trying to help make a career for her he very casually said "we are on our third agent right now because the first one fell in love with her and the second one tried to stalk her and send her naughty pics". It's like he never thought about just saying "fck it Im getting my kid out of this" but instead had no issue brushing off the very obvious trauma she had gone through in order to get her to the next level. I felt so bad for this girl and it made me want to beat the sht out of her dad, but I couldn't because I would risk losing my job.

The FGM story is so tragic because how engrained it is in some cultures. In 2021 I worked in a hospital and one night as I was covering the break of our Switchboard operator received a phone call from a woman asking about how to get an appointment to schedule her daughter's "female circumcision". I was so confused because I'd never heard it called that and it took me a bit to realize what she talking about. She said she had spoken to her family doctor who told her to call the local hospital and inquire. I told her that wasn't something done at all and that it was illegal in Canada. Before I could get more information she hung up because I spooked her. I recorded the number she called from and reported it to my supervisors. Hopefully the police got involved to save that poor daughter but the nonchalant way she spoke about the literal mutilation of her daughter completely caught me off guard.

The genital mutilation story gave me an anxiety attack as it was happening. I’m a Nigerian woman and I’m so grateful my parents (medical professionals) never did that to me, however, I’ve met so many women who weren’t as lucky as me. I honestly didn’t know it happened in Nigeria and it still does to this day. It’s extremely painful and traumatizing, and worst of all, COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. Putting women through a painful procedure that does absolutely nothing due to archaic cultural and religious beliefs and the people spearheading this will NEVER know what it feels like because they’re men. Why are men (some) always trying to police women’s bodies??

Our rights are constantly and actively under siege.
For a long time I didn’t vote because I saw the two parties as two sides of the same coin, and apparently got too comfortable. Now I vote every chance I get if only to dissent against the party actively trying to take my rights away.

So I’m from Sudan (90-98% females with FGM/C) and my mom once told me a story of how her mom, my grandma, had to trick her husband into believing the procedure was done. She took them to the doctor and everything but had them fake the procedure being done so that my mother and her sister would not have to experience that pain. This is obviously a wild story to me, displaying the contrast in my upbringing in the US and hers in Sudan. I think it’s so scary that the ban might be repealed, because it will only further aggravate the issue that these innocent women and girls are facing. It has its ties to the Muslim religion, but in my opinion it is a complete misinterpretation of the Quran, rather a horrific societal standard that must be unlearned over time.

The declassified kids, who joked about it on tiktok, Who still act like kids, are disgusting and its mind boggling that they didn’t spread Awareness or support. Something that anyone with common sense knows is horrific and there can be no excuse for such things. Through it all I’m reminded of that clip of Ned’s Declassified guys making jokes about a tragedy. Partner was stationed around the region and will not tell me everything, but "occasional child sacrifice" was mentioned and I can't even. The fact that its 2024 and ANYONE is discussing EITHER FGM or MGM as if its acceptable to do... I'm so filled with rage and disgust I can't even. Had to just stop the video and go to comments to see if ANYONE else was this upset at the idea of 10-15 year old girls being literally mutil@ted for the sake of some prehistoric dumbazz beliefs. I can't. It's so awful I literally regret being born into this race at all and hope after I eventually pass that I will be either yeeted into nothingness or else be made into a bird or some sort of bug so I can just dodge whatever other nastiness humanity is going to come up with or perpetuate next.
I've just plain lost hope. We can't even protect women and girls from harmful policies IN HOUSE what is to even be done for these children of any genders elsewhere in the world that are being ab*sed and disfigured over some old dude's stupid fantasies about a greater power.
The amount of fked up in today's episode... I'm dying. What even is reality, what are we as a species, WHY is this even a thing? The amount of hate and fear some cultures have for women is so incredibly disgusting and confusing I just can't process it...
It's even more upsetting that I had to scroll so far down top comments before I found one that even MENTIONED the FGM story and how heinous it actually is. The pred. stuff with Nick and the docu is bad, but the FGM and Gambia is even worse, I was expecting to see floods of comments at least mentioning just how disgusting that is... People are starting to lean away from the term “CP” in exchange for “CSAM” (Child Sexual Abuse Material) or “CSEM” (Child Sexual Exploitation material). The term pornography tends to have this perception of a level of participation and consent by both parties while the new terminology is reflective of how abusive/exploitative “CP” is. The change also allows for wider definitions as abuse/exploitative material can be more encompassing than pornography itself. Love the show! Keep up the good work. Thank you.

I haven’t watched the Nickelodeon documentary yet but I spent time working background on a few productions including ones from Nick & Paramount growing up and hearing about this honestly has me spooked. It was only over a few months but when you’re a kid on set during the school year they have dedicated trailers for studying and teachers on set so you have to do homework whenever there’s free time BUT unlike when working background as an adult you get to hang out with the other kids from the main cast in between shoots because we all had homework to do.
I was also a victim of SA, not on a set but from one of my teachers when I was 11. The thing is when I raised the issue I wasn’t taken seriously and was eventually put on meds for acting out over the matter. I did everything I could to escape from my situation because I felt like I couldn’t trust the adults around me to keep me safe anymore. I would go out with my bike until late at night, stayed at friends homes, churches, temples as much as possible, and it’s how I ended up getting hired for background work as a child because I was actively trying to escape from something similar back home.
It wasn’t until after I graduated from high school that teacher of mine got caught touching another boy just like he did with me. I broke down when I found out about what happened because when I was molested I thought it would end with me and it wasn’t until I found out from my friend that’s younger than me that I realized that he never stopped.
To hear that those kind of things were happening on set too made me realize how pervasive this problem really is. 😔

Concerning the sheep story. I discussed it with my wife, an animal scientist with emphasis on sheep and goats (a legitimate sheep expert).
We live in Northern Utah, just half an hour away from Idaho and 4 houra away from Yellowstone. This scares us. We dont farm or ranch, but our community survives on that.
Remember all the regulations due to the Mad Cow disease? Well, what if these illegal sheep parts contain viruses and illnesses that the local livestock, pets, and wild animals cannot defend themselves against?
If these experimental sheep get out, they can spread disease to my community in just a few years! That means that the price of beef skyrockets, as well as dairy products. Farmers and ranchers not making ends meet, and the smaller ones that work for themselves can lose the ranches their grandfathers started.
This also heavily affects the wild animal population, besides possible disease. Are they going to compete with elk and deer for the resources needed to survive? Are predators going to be enough to keep the population in check, or will the sheep take over the wildlife in the area?
I know that to many people it's a silly story and situation, but to my wife, a real sheep scientist, and all those of us that are even close-ish to Montana, it is a real issue.
Thank you for covering this, Phill. Let me know if you or your team wants to talk to my wife about it further. We could even get you in contact with her sheep and goat professor. He's one of the world's leading experts on sheep.

We still find asbestos in new products regularly which is why we require asbestos testing for any renovations or demolitions here. It’s a surprisingly large industry that’s remained hidden because asbestos is really good at what it does and isn’t harmful until you get the microscopic particles into the air. If a child learns about Consent they start applying that concept to things like "I don't want to hug Grandma" and "Uncle Buddy makes me feel icky inside" and "I don't like that Preacher" and THAT is where things go sideways. Because the moment Consent starts getting applied to religious principles that's when people start seeing what's really going on around them and that leads to kids leaving the church and stopping contact with their parents for not protecting them better.

My thoughts on the whole Quiet on Set documentary: It was an emotional, but really good documentary discussing an important topic. Especially on a specific hollywood production company that needed everyone to know about & to do something about. The backlashes like the Ned's Declassified trio making offensive jokes about that, & Hollywood people defending Brian Peck against Drake Bell REALLY makes me mad that I want to do something about it. Glad the 2nd of the 2 films talked about Jenette McCurdy's book "I'm Glad My Mom Died." I read the whole thing & took so many notes. Pretty much recapping the book. I loved it, I think it's important. I think high schools and colleges should use this for teaching lessons. As I have always been a Nick kid, I don't want the company doing what they have been doing throughout its really terrible history.

Growing up in North Carolina, I'm not super surprised that someone like Mark Johnson got the Republican nomination. Not because of his comments, but because of his name recognition. In my experience, a lot of people living in NC base their political views on their personal experience per presidential party years compared to individual policy/verbal comments made. NC's rural/urban divide is extremely strong, only recently have we received grants and construction projects to bridge the gap. I'm really hoping that our governor race continues to hit national attention but the only main job now is showing either undecided/unaware voters of his behaviour. Which, thanks for doing a big deep dive this goes get the ball rolling far.

Damn, the dive into everything Mark Robinson has said gave me vibes of that Simpson's meme clip, "Stop! He's already dead!"
With a social rap sheet like that and still being a frontrunner for the election is really just sad as it shows that too many people will always have a deep capacity for hatred.

Oh my good gods above... They are doing some hard work there. I'm absolutely disgusted to hear what's happening and I am hoping that it doesn't get passed either. I knew there were people trying to educate and break the cycles of ab*se there, but that was years ago. I had (obviously too optemistically) figured they had gotten it mostly gone and it was "just a few fringe people" but.. yeah I guess not? T_T the idea that FGM is being treated anywhere the way that MGM (circumcision) is in western/judeo-christian cultures is... scary. It sounds from your comment like its a bit reversed to how it is here in North America, where we have people trying to raise awareness to how MGM is a bad practice and should be dropped, but its slow going because it is considered normal to do when you have a boy baby.
I'm just gobsmacked this is still happening when it should be obvious (it seems to me) that either way it is disfiguration and mutil@tion of a child and thus wrong. I have so much trouble conceiving of a place where this is considered "normal", but I guess it must be like how we think of the MGM here, if it is a matter of education on a "cultural norm"?
I hope the situation is able to improve swiftly and soon! It's horrible to think of what those people are going through, just living with this as part of life...

    • @hippygirl1386
      @hippygirl1386 Місяць тому

No it's a little bit more complex than a cultural norm from what I understand it's a bit more like they genuinely believe women do not have a right to enjoy pleasure. Pleasure is a thing for men to experience exclusively and if women experience it then it's sinful. Also it's much harder to find a man to marry a woman who has not had this procedure done to them. She will be considered lesser than a woman who has had it done. Less pure less chased less good in the eyes of culture and religion. It has nothing to do with like biased medical research that is determined that women grow fungus down there if they don't get it done. It isn't a medical treatment for a common injury either. Also no woman has had it done voluntarily and then said afterwards that sex was just as good. The goal is to push women down in society and make them lesser than sexually. The idea that a women could enjoy herself and climax is bad thing that should be prevented at all costs. Can you imagine them trying to do that to boys? Taking a 13 year old boy and holding him down and cutting into his penis with no anesthesia with the goal of making it so that he can never use it again without severe pain. Not a mistake or a failure to do the procedure right but the purpose of it.

As a queer north Carolinian, I'm genuinely terrified for our future. I know a lot of the younger population here is fairly welcoming to non-cishet people but it's the older population that I think is going to get him elected. If Robinson gets elected, he and the rest of the NC gov will actively get people of all ages killed. We already had issues like with the bathroom bill, almost loosing more access to reproductive healthcare, and an actively growing violent, right-wing community.
I genuinely hope that North Carolinans come together and make sure he doesn't get elected cause if we don't we will end up seeing our state become more unsafe for everyone.
