  • It's time to harvest the giant pumpkin that's been growing in only homemade compost, no soil. This was a test to see how large of a pumpkin that we could grow out of this compost which is made from millions of leaves and thousands of pounds of coffee grounds. The natural rich leaf mold looks to have done a great job of feeding this Atlantic Giant Pumpkin plant all summer. The pumpkin was pollinated 98 days ago and now its time to pick it. We also will cut this pumpkin open with a chainsaw to examine the wall thickness of this giant fruit. The seeds are removed from the pumpkin and counted - 591 seeds are inside this giant pumpkin! Nitrogen to Carbon Compost Ratio was the key in mixing a proper balanced compost pile that gets very hot. The leaf matters gives a great source of Carbon, and the coffee grounds are very high in Nitrogen, and this composted mix fed the pumpkin all season. No fertilizers were used to feed this plant, just water.

Congratulations on your 550 pound monster! We did a local pumpkin drive and received approximately 150 donated jack-o'-lanterns after Halloween. The biggest one was 125 pounds! Half of them are going to feed my worm bins and compost piles and half went to a local chicken farm. As you said, it's the circle of life!

Congratulations. Nice job. Good of you to lend the giant to the school. With all those seeds, you should have quite a pumpkin patch next year.

This is very cool. Question: Where do you get all those coffee grounds?

I get them from a local coffee shop. If you stop and ask your local coffee place, they are probably happy for people to take them away. Usually, you can rotate pails for transport. Now I just leave a small trailer there and pick it up every couple of months when full.

What do you do with the compost?

Grow pumpkins in it 😆. Seriously though, I will start adding it to the garden as an additive and till in. It's also great for top dressing lawns and as an amendment when planting flowers and shrubs in the spring.
