Building up the Backyard Bass Pond. Caring for the bait, feeder fish and of course, The Bass!
More Bass Problems at the Backyard Pond
We've got more problems at the backyard bass pond. There's a bass swimming around the pond with a white residue on it's eyes! It's totally weird and I don't know what caused it. This fish doesn't look healthy and probably hasn't been eating since it simply can't see well enough to catch the fast moving minnows and baitfish in the pond. I try to net the fish so that we can get a better look at the white growth around it's eyes. I'm hoping someone can tell me what this problem is with this fish. I'm also hoping this disease or bacteria doesn't spread to the other pond bass. We have to catch this fish before it risks passing on the infection to the other healthy bass.

Dead Bass at the Backyard Pond! Time for an Investigation
Переглядів 50014 днів тому
We have a dead bass at the backyard bass pond. I need to find out what happened to this largemouth bass. Winter kill? Lack of oxygen under the ice? Starting the pond aerator too early? Too late? Did the fish eat something bad? Too much late winter pond aeration, or not enough oxygen? Did I have the diffuser too low at the pond bottom? Could that be what killed this fish? In order to get to the ...

Nice.!!!!! : )
Good video
Thanks, appreciate it.
Wish I could help ! The fish have a problem all came from the same place ? If so , ask them if they have had the same problem with their fish . Make sure you keep your hands sanitized . Good luck !
And start check8ng and keeping records of DO, PH and other water quality
Yes thanks, just did a pH test. It's high.
Ask on pondboss forum
Good idea, I will do that. Thanks.
How many acres is your pond? You can use goggle earth to trace the edge and it will tell you
It's smaller than maybe it looks on film. I'd say it's only a 1/4 acre.
Get your water tested at a pool store if ones around
Thanks, I'll see if the local pool shops will do that for me.
I'd look into getting some professional testing or knowledge. Too much going on and something is up. Sorry.
Hopefully not the same but I keep aquariums and there’s a couple of pretty contagious diseases that can cause this. There’s medications for this but I have no idea how to does a pond.
I'll look into it. Thanks.
If it would be in an aquarium, I'd say it looks like ick.
Well, not exactly like a filtered indoor aquarium, ha. But I try to have clear water. It's gone a bit darker this last couple weeks.
I ordered large mouth bass cross between tiger bass and large mouth they came in about 6" pretty nice fish grew fast very aggressive. Hatchery delivered them at bass pro on their route pretty cheap way to go alantic stocking I think they was the company.
Thanks Dan, I dont know if they can handle the cold? I'm not sure. I'm in Canada?
Sounds like ICH ...... Ich, short for ichthyophthirius multifiliis, is an opportunistic parasite that infects freshwater fish. Fish are susceptible to ich infections when they are under excessive stress caused by pH fluctuations, rapid temperature changes, overcrowding, overfeeding, poor water quality, and insufficient oxygenation.
This is great info. Thanks! I have been dumping some clean rainwater from the roof eavestrough into the pond, thinking I was a genius to keep the water clean and not mixed with runoff, but maybe that messes with Ph?
Hi. You said "you have too much compost". No matter how much compost i make i never have enough. I get trailer loads of wood chips horse manure, jungle mulch from the tip, plus our kitchen scraps plus our garden waste which amount to nothing.
Never have too much compost, you're right.
What is the part number of the pumps you're using?
I got the 2 pump system here: www.thedugoutdude.ca/
My first guess is ... a lack of oxygen in the pond for a fish that large.
Thanks
i have experienced that same problem several times. large older bass don't like beeing moved from one body of water to another. they have more trouble adapting to a new environment than younger fish. sometimes it went well for the first couple months, but tipically the next winter they were floating dead. my conclusion: the younger/smaller the fish you move, the lower the mortality.
I may have been overthinking it. That makes so much sense, and I never even thought of that.
Fish Detective?
Has a nice ring to it
I empathize with you for losing the bass but the autopsy was really funny.
Did not enjoy the process.
You may need more aquatic plants
Thanks, I think you're right. I'm going to work on that this summer.
@@ryanhoelke I hope it works. It's definitely not good to lose fish.
Like was said if you have your aerator on the bottom youll move the non Ox water up and mix it around and suffocate the fish..as well as any toxic trapped gases in the sediment, the big ones usually die first. Good rule of thumb is to have your aerator about 2/3rd's off the bottom for the winter and you can lower when the ice leaves but do it a bit every day so you dont stir up all the rotten vegetation. On the shore I'd use a rye/vetch mix soon, itll root and with a week youll have 4 inch grass...rain permitting.
how many watts are those pumps? I do 1 w per gallon for my fish. 1-2w per gallon is sometimes necessary. Did that lake freeze through solid? If so- so did your fish. Remember- the less volume in your pond- the quicker it will freeze and the further down it will freeze. so many questions. IF you need a hydroponics guy- im unemployed and looking for work. That line ruptured cause plastic ruptures when exposed to temperature fluctuations. Glad to see the generation above me strugglign with basic science concepts that I could do drunk.
There was about 12" of ice this winter. The pond is around 7 to 8 feet deep.
I turned my aerator on too early I believe and pushed the warm water up and the cold water down. If you watch a couple of my videos it shows a small portion to how many I have lost.. I’d proceed with caution. It sucks
Thanks, still trying to figure it out. I only lost the one, thankfully, but I'll check it out.
How is your pond so clear
I've been having good luck with an aerator and some pond dye. ua-cam.com/video/Or9PzM0M57g/v-deo.html
Solar pump link?

@@ryanhoelke Thank you !
I went through some same erosion issues like you have planted annual ryegrass to get roots in ground and hard fescue or no mow grass spartan 2 worked well for me.
Thanks Dan. I'm going to do similar this summer. Working on a pretty large landscape project around the pond.
@@ryanhoelke looking forward to landscaping videos!
@@danmartin9558 I've been putting up the landscape stuff here: m.youtube.com/@RyanHoelkeLandscape
I hope it wasn’t one of your large mouth bass!
Dang man. Left us off on a cliff hanger.
Sorry! I had to make it a two-parter, so it wasn't too long.
Pumpkin roots go very deep. If they didn't find what they wanted in the pile, they could get a lot of roots into the soil underneath to find it. The roots in the pile make good compost, anyway, not to mention the vines and leaves on top
That was so much fun watching. I have always wanted to grow a giant pumpkin wished you would have grown the larger plant mybe next year. THANKS
Love the videos. Keep it going
Glad you like them.
Great video! You pond is very healthy - the fish are nice and low which means good dissolved Oxygen content at all levels. How deep is the pond? Were the fish at the lowest point?
Thanks for this. Good to hear the water health looks good. I tried to dig it deep but it's pure sand based so once the water cleared after digging, the pond was only about 7 feet deep as the sand sides slid into the center. Maybe 8' in a couple spots not totally sure. The sunfish seem to stack up in the middle of the water column at times but I do see more activity in the winter down low on the pond, as I'm assuming it's warmer there than just under the ice.
@@ryanhoelke thats interesting, usually the water turns over and the warmer water goes to the top and keeps the ice from going down low - but i suspect the temp might just be consistent from top to bottom eventually. In any event that's a healthy ecosystem you have there. If you want to see how healthy get the biggest speckled trout you can find - something that wont fit in the mouth of your bass and watch it in the winter, it'll stay where there is the most dissolved Oxygen. I have a dissolved oxygen test kit I use in my pond and its very helpful and just pretty good info to have and understand how your pond is performing....it'll also tell you if you are headed for a winter kill.
That sounds cool. I've never heard of the dissolved oxygen kits and it sounds interesting. I have wondered about maybe putting some speckles in late in the fall. Thanks.
@@ryanhoelke if you do youll have to put very big ones in or the bass will make a quick meal of them. rainbows you can usually buy big ones - to big for the bass and they do better than the specks in low DO (dissolved oxygen) environments. With specks you'd most likely have to aerate all winter as well.
That is great video i want to grow Giant pumkin but it is dificult to get seeds Giant pumkin like that it is a pity..
Cool video
Thanks, appreciate it.
I run the dye on mine. It blocks sunlight and plants can't grow under water. Another method I haven't tried is to sink some bales of barley . Suppose to work
I made a follow-up aerator video and had been using dye at that point, and yes, you're right. The dye does really help.
Can you share the details about the specific aeration unit used here? How we might get one??
I bought it here:www.thedugoutdude.ca/dugout-systems/solar-aeration I got the 2 pump system.
How deep is your pond?
It's only about 7 feet. It's all sand, so it was hard to get it dug super deep.
@@ryanhoelke Yeah, I had the exact same issue. My pond can fluctuate between 8 to 14 feet. Do the fish do fine in 7 feet? I'm about to get some.
@kylewalling5432 yes, I haven't had much problem in 3 years now. I'd get an aerator, but other than that, you should be fine. Maybe put less fish in at the start as you can always add more later.
I’m going to try this. I have 5 acres of pasture to get plenty of green grass clippings, and 50 or so hardwood trees that dump a ton of leaves. I can use my sweeper to get the clippings and leaves and push them into a pile with my tractor. I live in central Florida, so green grass clippings is not hard.
It adds up over time and is great to use almost anywhere as a topdressing for anything growing. It will break down on its own, but if you build your layers and flip it once and a while, it will be usable compost quicker.
Spent grains from a brew house will really get it hot and going.
Nice make sure you add more trees when you stock more minnows
Thanks, I have a couple ready.
Hi Ryan im based down in australia and really enjoyed the few vids of the aerator youve posted... One favour to ask, i checked the initial vid a couple of times for where /who you sourced your solar pump package from, its a really neat impressive unit and cant find anything similar down here in oz, so hoping to reach out & ship one down here if you can give me a business name & location (or web link) . Cheers mate, Dave
Hi, I got it here: www.thedugoutdude.ca/ He was having some trouble shipping to US and not having things damaged but US Postal, but maybe you could talk him into shipping international.
The discoloration look like iron chlorosis. Hot and drought conditions exacerbate the condition. So do highly alkaline soils. Sulfur and chelated iron may help your cause this next growing season 😊
Thanks. Appreciate that info.
Can you share where you get your tags? What company makes them?
Hey, Fred. I got them here: dynamicaquasupply.com/products/fish-tags-numbered-1-100-orange?_pos=9&_sid=78b5032bd&_ss=r
I got a 190 Gallon compost bin and the hottest I've gotten it upto is 165 degrees Fahrenheit with mostly grass clippings, shredded cardboard down to less than 1" pieces, and compressed pine sawdust, and food scraps.
I would have kept the pike to help get rid of them, but I understand why you didn’t want to, they do stink! I’m enjoying your videos, I have a pond myself thanks!
Thanks for watching. I hear you with the pike, but I usually throw them back. I know some people who rank them as a top eating fish.
I thought green ponds are good for fish so why would you want to remove their food source? Athletically, maybe an eye sore. Alternately why not build a wetland filter to get clearer water even with 5 hours of air per day sunshine.
Just found your channel! Really liking your videos! Hope to see more
Hi Ryan, Thanks for this content. I only came across it today. My pond is small but in need of help like yours was. Are you still happy with the aeration system and can you please give a status on how things are going? Thank You!
Hey Bob, yes it got much better. I'd say the aerator has done its job. Some blue dye won't hurt either to block some sunlight out. I did a follow-up video here: ua-cam.com/video/Or9PzM0M57g/v-deo.html
