    I was a mechanic in the mid 70s and worked on a Chevrolet C70 house trailer toter with an adjustable wheel base. It was very simple, one frame slid in another similar to the way a rollback works, flexible hydraulic hose for the rear brakes, a short drive shaft and a long one. The hitch wench did the pulling and stretching. The reason behind it was better safer handling on the highway and being able to make very tight turns at the house site. It only took 10 to 15 minutes to make a change. By the way Cool museum.

    @5:45 the brakes lines could be a coil sort of like a spring like the air lines for semi trailers allowing it to extend without snapping or it could have wire actuated brakes like those in bicycles that dont have oil inside for the rear eliminating the need for hydraulics, instead of having a telescoping drive shaft it could of been a front wheel drive only hence doesnt need a driveshaft to the rear wheels.

    Thanks for posting, great video! Regarding the Studebaker, all excellent points on the adjustable frame. I don't know for certain, but I would venture that you would have to order your choice of wheelbase from the factory OR take it back to a specialized dealer to have it adjusted, because, as you said, there are so many variables that would need to be installed and adjusted to specification. With many being different parts. Happy New Year!!

    In response to the question about the extendable wheelbase on that Studebaker, I can see just one solution. You could order it with a different wheelbase, using the same chassis. As far as I know, it is still available on new trucks. However, after it's built, there is no changing anymore

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  3 роки тому

    Paul actually some of the really first RVs where the Basque Sheep wagons. They where used from the mid 1700-today. They had a bed, table and even wood cook stoves. They where pulled by horse or mules from camp to camp. They cared for approximately 2000 sheep and had two dogs to help manage the sheep. They traveled all over the western states. Just think your shower consisted of the cold Creek or a watering trough for the tub. Just imagine the simple life of being a nomad. Ops that what we want to do. Getting closer. Working on the kitchen. Then the upstairs bathroom. Moving towards the sale of the brick and mortar. Plane on retiring 01/03/23

      That's good to know about the sheep wagons, thank you! Congrats on your upcoming new life!!! Just think in a couple weeks you will be able to say "next year" you'll be retired!!! If you haven't already, look into a countdown clock or just number the months backwards on a notebook and at the first of each month just rip off a page!! Happy planning!

    Poor Paul...I think what they did with the Studebaker truck....whoever was the original owner probably took older parts and slapped it on the "newer" model but I can see that Paul really knows his cars/trucks! kind of could be a Frankenstein Studebaker!

    Wow guys, I love this video! This is why people RV, to go places and see cool things. I'm with Paul on the truck it would take a little engineering to do that. The brake lines wouldn't be a problem if they were put on swivels or flexible hoses like on the calipers. The telescoping drive line is doable but the engineering for the balance must have been fun, maybe they used a fluid dampening type tube around the drive line to auto balance it, or some kind of tubular sliding CV joints inside the tube so it could slide in and out without play. The emergency brake line wouldn't be that hard either, if it had a metal jacketed line that pivots front to back on some kind of swing arm. I would really like to see the shots of the underside of that truck. I'm with you Paul, after reading that placard, I'd be crawling all up under there to take a look too! Thanks for another great video guys. Best Wishes & blessings. Keith Noneya

    Fascinating museum, and I wouldn't mind a special episode on the Hunt House Car!. My experience with RV's is limited to the Coleman pop-up camper we had when I was a kid, and doing engine work on an old steel bodied Superior motor home. Was the museum name changed for the sake of image?

    Look up Whatoff Trailer Toter. They were out of Iowa. Never saw a Tote earlier than the C cabs, but there it was on your video. Two C cab toters graced my garage in years past. One was a 5E28 (1960), the other was a 7E28 (1962). Both ran the 289 4bbl, 5 speed New Process transmission with an Eaton 2 speed axle. The front ends were crudely truncated and left with a grate style grill in place of the fiberglass mass. The front bumper was also modified to fit was close to the cab as possible. The frames were cut just past the rear cab support, and a sliding rear scheme was visible, although both of the ones I had were left in the extended position. There were supposedly two different driveshafts - a longer one for extended chassis "dead-head" driving, and the shorter one for truncated trailer transport mode. Cab corners were notched, too, to allow the wheel well to tuck was close was possible. All of this was done to meet the draconian truck-trailrer lengths some states had back then. 40' total length is a number that comes to mind. Toward the end of Studebaker's run, they made a truck that was called the 96 BBC. They more or less stole Whatoff's design, sans the retractible frame. This supposedly infuriated Mr. Whatoff, so he started using Internationals. I had high hopes of doing something with these trucks, but lack of time and talent sent them away. Cool video. I periodically make a run from Colorado to the east coast, and stop off at Studebaker Mecca when I time it right. Elkhart might be a interesting change.

You didn't show Mae West's camper car, if it's still there, and I noticed they still haven't made the beds in that long travel trailer behind the Studebaker! Chances are the plaque for the Studebaker truck was previously for a different truck. They had trailer toters with the variable frame length in the 60s like the sign said, I'm sure they switched trucks, or misplaced the sign. I've seen a couple of them.

    What a great video . Loved every second of it . I'm surprised the New Moon trailer used in I Love Lucy wasn't mentioned . The Studebaker looked absolutely beautiful . I bet the driver was the king of the hill pulling into a campground with that beauty . I can totally relate with Paul , been sliding around on more floors then I can remember . Sometimes curiosity gets the best of us . Boys will be boys . At the motorcycle show in Zurich I was on my back under a bike , when a rep walked up and wanted to know if I was having a heart attack and if she should call an ambulance . I can imagine that it slides apart like some big trailers , but the question is why . Hi Liz , did you have to pull Paul out by his feet at closing time ? That had me laughing .

      @LizAmazing  3 роки тому

      Awww, thanks so much for your comment. Well, I googled about the adjustable wheelbase and it was done because the state of Iowa had a 45' total length restriction at the time. So this was a way to get around that. But that was all I could find. I couldn't find anything that talked about how it worked with the Stude. So Paul is still scratching his head over that one!
