I think that's the real competition too, though Brian makes a good case for Timothee. But Ralph and Adrian are more experienced actors and this is a category in which older actors tend to win more than younger ones (it's the opposite for Best Actress).
I am also Team Fiennes; Ralph gave us such a deeply felt and subtle performance. He often spoke volumes without saying a word. I haven't seen "The Brutalist" yet though, so I'll have to see how I feel about Adrian's performance afterward.

    2. Adrien Brody (The Brutalist)
    3. Colman Domingo (Sing Sing)
    4. Timothee Chalamet (A Complete Unknown)
    5. Daniel Craig (Queer)
Daniel Craig could easily miss since Queer is divisive. I have no idea anymore about slot #5. Gladiator II is divisive and Mescal has detractors. After the election, Sebastian Stan is done for The Apprentice. I wish people paid more attention to Andre Holland in Exhibiting Forgiveness or Cillian Murphy in Small Things Like These.

I saw "Conclave" in the cinema and was gobsmacked - I haven't seen such a good Hollywood film in years, most of the best films are now coming from abroad or are indies - and Ralph Fiennes was cheated of a win in both "The English Patient" and "Grand Budapest Hotel" , he totally deserves it. And Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini all deserve supporting actor/actress nods as well IMHO.

The Leo myth is very misleading, it posits that Leo is like the only actor who has to wait a long to win his first Oscar. He was 41 which is a fair age to get an Oscar imo. Many of the time you need a lot of nominations before you get your win. Not to mention he had to face some pretty competitive years in his previous nominations prior to The Revenant and I think he should a fairly low chances at winning at the other nominations. Its funny how Leo is the only actor being given this “waiting so long for an Oscar” people really forgot Deborah Kerr, Peter O’Toole, Geraldine Page, Shirley McClain, etc. these guys either never got it but got it so later on too and I think they should be recognised

Yes and both Austin and Timmy are singing in their respective films also. There's a lot of similarities here... particularly when you consider that Austin got beat by a dramatic performance from Brenden Fraser where the entire film focused on him. Much like Adrien Brody having so much screentime in The Brutalist. So it makes a lot of sense that Brody would win with Timmy in second position.

"May i make the case for an outsider? Perhaps not an oscar frontrunner but a definite critical darling that might pick up steam... on the set of Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy got chatting to Matt Damon about wanting to make a movie based on a book called Small Things Like These, written by Claire Keegan, who wrote the book that the Irish movie A Quiet Girl is based on. Matt Damon asked could he produce the movie. Cillian Murphy stars in it opposite his buddy from his theatre days, Eileen Walsh. The director they got made a critically acclaimed tv show called The Responder. And it was adapted by Enda Walsh, the playwright who helped launch Murphy's career. It's got all the right ingredients. The plot is a bit like Spotlight, but it's about a man uncovering religious abuse in 1980s rural Ireland. Premiered at Berlin to a standing ovation."

Timothee Chalamet is a brilliant young actor whose young career has already spanned a broad spectrum of characters … from a gay teenager who falls for his father’s teaching assistant, to a drug addict, to Henry V, to Paul Atreides, to a cannibal, to Wonka, to Bob Dylan…. There is no role Chalamet cannot play and always does so in a believable, engaging, and engrossing fashion.

    • @drewengel7073
      @drewengel7073 28 днів тому

My honest belief is that Chalamet is going to have an Oscar nominating history similar to many actors that get nominated and don't win the first time. Actors have never learned from their forebears about what to do to get that trophy and that is they need to take on a role that makes the Academy take notice of them and force the Academy to give them an Oscar. The reason why method actors often win, is that the Academy is gripped by the stories of how far the method actor went for the role, so they assume that they should give the actor an Oscar.

Hey now, as an Oscar predictor since Rain Man, I have based my predictions on instinct especially where not even half of the movies that give off the vibe get played in my town. It is also a well known fact that Best Actor is my niche (31 wins in 36 years) so much to the point of having four slots well pinned for their respected nominations. However, in regards to the wild card spot, I have to agree with one of the two you called upon: Daniel Craig for Queer. Even though Best Actor has felt a little on the thin side until just recently, I cannot pinpoint a solid winner...at least not at this time. I also want to add, I am gunning for my Numero Venti (20) in that category and if Cillian Murphy doesn't pull an encore (he is my dark horse in the running), it would be a scream if Adrian Brody did take the win especially where his unexpected win in 2002 was the last time I missed Best Actor. Forgive me if I said too much but the hopes of my longtime streak are doomed to go up in smoke unless the race will be another cakewalk...even though I am not sticking my fork down just yet. Stay tuned....💗

I think you’re underestimating Stan’s chances, and he’ll have a good chance BECAUSE of the vote. I can see him being nominated essentially as a protest towards Trump’s election win, which depending on what happens next year, could potentially result in him winning. It’s not out of the question given how disliked he is.

Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.

I loved "Sing Sing"; it's my favorite movie of the year so far. I have great love for Colman Domingo, whose performance is just perfect. But it is understated, letting the other actors shine, I'm wondering if that might hurt him. Really the breakout performance in the movie is Clarence Macklin, who will get a nod hopefully in Best Supporting Actor.

I really dont think Paul Mescal is happening. Ive seen way too many mixed reactions to his performance. Everyone keeps saying that Denzel is the one that runs away with the movie, and he may be judged under the lens of Russell Crowe winning for the first one.
Right now I have Daniel Craig, but it's possible it could be some other passion pick like Sebastian Stan. Sadly, I think the election results will hamper his chances. Maybe some smaller movie could sweep in.

My no guts no glory pick for the fifth slot is John David Washington. Hear me out. Craig's movie is way to polarizing and it's Craig or bust. People don't want to watch a Trump movie and thus Stan is most likely out. Mescal is actually said to be miscast by a few reactions for Gladiator II. Piano Lesson is meanwhile considered pretty good by a lot of major trade reviews, and Deadwyler is guaranteed a spot. Netflix is also a strong campaigner as well. Aside from Deadwyler, JDW is also getting solidly good reviews for his role and I think he could get in alongside Deadwyler.
