Eddie Redmayne for the “The Theory of Everything” is underrated as hell. People go on and on about how Michael Keaton should’ve won this year. But I don’t agree with that at all tbh. It baffles me how this win is seen as underserved.

the academy HATES Gyllenhaal. IDK why or what he did, but man has been acting his ass off for years and never got a nom after Brokeback Mountain. they just seem to have some un favourites who always do great work like Amy Adams, it's definitely to some extent a popularity contest (not to say Eddie didn't do great he was wonderful in that film as I recall.)

Brian, you are so right saying the 2010s winners don’t really age well. Really hate the fact that originals like Chiwetel Edjiofor and Michael Keaton lost to Oscar-safe, awards-baity transformation boredom. Just see how Arrival’s Amy Adams not even nominated but she got in for playing Lynne Cheney🙄

I don’t think the 2010s were particularly strong but John Dujardin absolutely deserved to win his Oscar. It’s a great performance and the best in that category. Also how can you say he’s disappeared? He’s still very much a staple of French cinema. Movies exist away from Hollywood. Blimey.

I don’t agree with your point about how there’s no comparison to Redmayne’s and Gyllenhal’s performances. Jake was excellent and would’ve been my runner up had he’d been nominated. But I feel like you seriously undermine how much Redmayne had to do. Playing a well known figure, especially one with a severe disability is extremely hard while also trying to make it convincing. It’s the type of performance that could’ve been a career ender with one wrong move, and he nailed it.

The guy even slightly dislocated his spine in his work so he absolutely was the right winner. Even the Oscar expert said it's a very good win and that people are just butthurt mad cause Keaton didn't win. But of course since it's a real life figure he's playing, the hate train begins...

Jean Dujardin went back to France after his win because he's a french actor and he wanted to make french movies, even The Artist is technically a french movie, he hasn't "fallen off the map" he's still making movies just not in your country. to be honest i think it's kind of stupid to only assume you have a career in cinema if you're making movies in the US, i'm sorry man i like you but this doesn't sit right with me, there are plenty of amazing movies outside of the US that aren't being nominated to the oscars that you should probably pay a bit more attention to.
if you want more movies JD has starred in i'd suggest you to watch those:

I totally understand why Daniel Day Lewis left acting. He completely disappeared into every role he played. He wore their skin, thought only of their thoughts, their feelings. That must be absolutely exhausting! I can’t imagine how hard that must be to shake off…. But that’s what made him a quintessential master of his craft. We are grateful to you Mr Lewis 🙏

You couldn't tell ANYONE that Rami Malek sucked in Bohemian Rhapsody (or that the movie sucked in general) when it came out. People looked at me like I had lobsters crawling out of my ears.
Why did he win? People LOVE Freddie Mercury. That's why...and the nostalgia for the Live Aid performance pushed that role into the noms. It was designed to win. It was designed to pander.
Rocketman on the other hand was a really well made movie. It wasn't as sanitized I suppose.

The Academy has always favored performances where actors undergo extreme physical transformations. From Fredric March in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," forward to Daniel Day Lewis in "My Left Foot," and female stars have often won in performance where they "ugly up," like Grace Kelly in "The Country Girl," Charlize Theron in "Monster," and Nicole Kidman in "The Hours." In all these cases, a lot of the reason they won was due to the makeup artists!

I have never felt such a overwhelming response to a film performance as I did from Joaquin Phoenix in the Joker. I turned to my friend and said "if he doesn't win an Oscar" there is no justice and my friend agreed. I know you have this love for DiCaprio, an actor I have felt so often has been miscast, but Phoenix' performance is one of the best ever put on film. Seriously. Watch it again. Affleck was excellent, but again, Day Lewis was better in Lincoln and I would put him right behind Phoenix. You are definitely right about Malek though, and Michael Keaton so deserved the Oscar over Eddie Redmayne. What the hell happened there!?

Glad Leo has an Oscar. The Revenant is such an uncomfortable movie, so I don't like it. Painful to watch. But, I agree that he should have gotten an Oscar for anything else.
I love Colin Firth, and I do really like The King's Speech. Again, WWII movie.
