    Thank you for sharing these videos with us. I think it helps people to understand that this isn't rocket science, but that anybody can do it, and it works everywhere except inside a cave. Plus you can start small, then expand as you can afford it.
    I went to school at Jordan Energy Institute in the Grand Rapids area for renewable energy and electric vehicles. It was the last school in the country to give actual degrees, not just certificates, for these subjects. Unfortunately it closed down in I believe 1995.
    It's been amazing to watch the industry expand and get so much more mature,
    with so many more manufacturers now, and the prices have fallen off a cliff. Everything is so much cheaper, more efficient, and have so many bells and whistles it's amazing.
    Back then, we only had a couple manufacturers of off grid modified sinewave inverters, Trace was the main one. They have since changed names to Xantrex, then to Schneider. There are also other very high quality North American made inverters. Nowadays most everything is high quality pure sinewave that have all kinds of grid interactive and generator capabilities added on to them.
    We also now have some fantastic DC appliances that are so much more efficient, and don't need to rely on inverters. There are now solar DC mini split air conditioning units, deep freezers, refrigerators, well pumps etc. That just sip a fraction of electricity compared to their AC counterparts.
    Anyway, I just want to congratulate you for walking the walk and not getting stuck in analysis paralysis.
    You mentioned that a whole house generator typically costs ten grand plus, can you please give us the growing cost of your system as it grew through time? I think it might help people exploring the idea of going solar.
    It looks like you understand Volts, Amps, and Watts, but you seem to have trouble with Amp hours, and Watt hours like many people do. I'll try to explain it with the typical water analogy. If Volts is the pressure, Amps is the flow, and Watts is the power, then what are the gallons or quantity? Since you can't pour electricity into a bucket, you have to multiply the rate by time. So if you have ten gallons per hour (gph) of water flowing through a pipe for one hour, then you simply multiply 10gph (rate) × 1 hour (time) to get 10 gallons, (quantity). It's the same thing with electricity, if you have ten amps flowing through a wire for one hour, then you have ten amp hours (Ah). So basically, what I'm saying is that Amps is a rate, and Amp hours, is a quantity. Same thing with Watts and Watt hours (Wh), just multiply the voltage times Amp hours to get Watt hours. To get kilowatt hours (kWh) you just multiply Watt hours by one thousand. This is why the Electric Company charges for electricity by the kilowatt hour, it's the quantity of electricity that you used.
    Hope that helps and have fun with all of your projects.

      Thanks. Yeah I understand watt and amp hours, I’m just not that good at explaining it. Thanks for simplifying it for me though.

    It's pretty cool to go back and look at the graphs. You're reminded of not only weather patterns but all the events and sometimes problems you've dealt with. It's like, "See this dip here - this is when I was having trouble with that one string of panels and ... " The good news is, your graph is headed in the right direction! Congrats on your successes and on dealing with the problems.

    I have had my eg46500 in split phase for a year this month. I can remember how nervous I was and not sure where to even start but watching your channel and hearing about signature solar I knew I needed to get started. I am so grateful for all the advice you offered and the time you spent on video’s showing us your adventure. My system was worth every penny and plan to make additional investments in the future. The feeling I get knowing I have power independence is up there with…, well I am sure you know as well.

    Your videos have helped me greatly with learning and planning my system. I'm still in phase 2 of my setup so don't have batteries or inverters yet. Instead I did 2 solar mini splits and 6kw of panels. ~$10k invested and power bills are down almost $200 a month during our crazy South Texas summer. Anyway, just wanted to thank you again and share an example of how your sharing is helping others.

    Basically running same system as you for about a year (EG 6500's and EG4 batteries) but don't have any lights plugged into it. One string of led lights I did have plugged into it once only worked when set to 100%. Seeing an average of $70+ savings a month switching some of the big stuff like our dryer. We also bought a second fridge which is plugged in 24/7. I also added two mini splits which are set much cooler than our old AC as they are on solar/battery. Not to mention we bought a plug in hybrid. Actually savings is probably well north of a $120 per month now.
    Not to mention, one of the reasons I built my system was to have a power back up during a power outage. We recently had one where the power was out for 8 hrs, yet I was able to run both my fridges, internet, water, TV, PC, and a few lights.
    Overall, I've been very happy, but, I do plan on building a complete off grid cabin in Maine, some of the issues you mentioned won't do. Will have to research other invertors.

    Solar is nice. I'm glad I just went ahead and laid some panels on the ground and got an EG4 6500 running to get my office off grid-ish. After a week my projected power bill is 30$ lower because I work from home and so I use solar power during the time of day where my power is 33 cents an hour. So I'm saving almost a dollar an hour from 3 to 7.

    Well, Adam, I feel ya. I have almost the exact same system you have (difference is that I have a rack of eg4-ll batteries which are working flawlessly) , and have gone through exactly the same exercises trying to discover oddities. I have experienced almost the same frustrations with Signature Solar eg4 firmware/support, but in my case, being a seasoned engineer, I have experienced less pain working with them... they have been reasonably quick with responses to my queries (in general). I did find it "entertaining" that you called it "tier none" ;)... I don't think I'd personally go that far. I know they are trying to keep up with the big boys, and definitely have a niche market, and they have made great strides. But, the price point, etc, - they are more for the DIY market place, not the professional installers. Perhaps Tier 2.
    All that said, I'm equally as frustrated with you regarding the flickering lights, and the random switching on and off... literally, everything turns off occasionally for 1 second, I hear the same clicking. I cannot explain that. I believe it is the MQTT firmware/logic. Each firmware release it gets closer to working, but.... whatever. So it goes.
    As I have LOTS of room in my solar shed, and have a large homestead (several acres, several buildings), I'll find a better use for these. I have separate sub-panels to different locations (one to my office, one to my workshop, one to my tiny house, etc), I'm going to keep this setup for now with a "smaller set of batteries" as my "garage/shed/workshop power station. This setup will allow me to keep those totally areas off grid. Very easy to measure the electric savings. The EG4 solution works, but for me, but not in my "always on" space. The hardware won't go to waste.
    I am going to build out a new system. I was toying with the Victron solution (I know, not a surprise anymore), but instead, will be going with Sol-Ark all in one 15k system for my main home/living space.
    Keep the videos coming. Your lessons and ability to share have improved greatly over the last year. I have enjoyed going through your journeys with you. Keep the videos coming, and keep sharing your lessons learned. It is appreciated.

    • @AdamDeLay07
      @AdamDeLay07  Рік тому

      Thanks Howie!
      In regards to SS support, the last time I sent in a ticket, it took almost 3 weeks to get a response. It's too bad. The "tier none" was in reference to a comment someone else made on the forum. Unfortunately their communication issues stem deeper than just with support.
      I still think the flickering has something to do with the changes made to allow for 500v on the mppts. I still saw some pulsing on some lights when solar was running high. Even the LV6548V models (the ones with higher voltage) started experiencing flickering issues when the standard 6548s didn't have it.
      I know some people are utilizing the new "upgrade program" and going with the 18kPV units. I'm still undecided about what I'm gonna end up doing with mine. It seems like people with dedicated applications (one or two appliances) don't seem to have issues with the 6500s. The problem comes when people try to power their entire house and have AC IN connected. All the occurrences I've heard where people don't have issues, they don't have any AC IN.
      Good luck on your new system! I'll be interested to hear how it goes.
      Thanks for the kind words. It's been fun!

    If you can't track down the real cause of the flickering, be it an earth return path, HF noise getting back from the AC side to the DC side (AC side neutral and battery - are tied to the same earthing system), what ever, think about a small separate known good inverter for the lighting circuit.

    • @retrozmachine1189
      @retrozmachine1189 Рік тому +1

      Put a standard AC watt meter on the load, DC clamp meter on the input to the inverter to get amps and measure DC volts at the inverter's input terminals. Multiply amps x volts to get incoming DC watts, compare to outgoing AC watts. Doesn't take power factor induced current into account etc but should be pretty reasonable.

    In reality, every solar system only really starts saving money when it produces enough energy to pay for itself, at that point you are at zero - your investment has paid off, and only after that point do you start saving money purely from a financial viewpoint.
    This is often forgotten, the payback is usually a few years, the bigger the system the longer, even over 10 years until it starts to actually save money and by then the panels, batteries etc. have degraded.
    Have you paid off your entire solar system investment by generating electricity from solar panels since January?

    • @AdamDeLay07
      @AdamDeLay07  Рік тому +1

      While that’s 100% true, you also need to be saving money on your electrical bill so that you can “pay back” the cost of the system. If your not saving any money on your electrical bill at all, you’ve just wasted all that money on your solar system.
      At that point, it’s just like the “whole home generator” that just sits there for the random power outage. It’s just an expense with no savings.

    • @tiborchren
      @tiborchren Рік тому

      @@AdamDeLay07 Yes, I agree, it's great to see on the electricity bills that the solar system is working as it should, and so you can see when the system pays for itself, because at the moment you're paying off the whole investment in the solar system by using it, and when you pay it off by generating enough electricity from the solar panels then you can say you're saving money, but not before, just purely from my point of view.
