Today’ lesson: Alchohol related vocabulary: 1. Out-drinking = drinking more than 2. Teetotal = Person who never drink alcohol 3. Boozer = Person who drinks a lot of alcohol 4. Wine/ Beer O’clock = prefer time of start drinking wine / beer 5. Knocking back= drinking something quickly particularly alcohol often a large amount. Thank you very much BBC. What I have learnt: During festival, young people become out-drinking men in India especially on wine o’clock. My friend XXX is a boozer and sometimes we found him at knocking back aclcohol. However, I am still a teetotal. Please correct me in case any poor writing.
Very good, but we have a few corrections. 1. Teetotal is an adjective - teetotaler is a noun. So you could say "I am teetotal" or "I am a teetotaler" 2. When using o'clock, we say "at xxx o'clock". So, we would say "at beer o'clock'. 3. When we talk about something happening 'sometimes', we follow it with the present tense. E.g. "sometimes we find him knocking back alcohol". OK - we hope that helps! Thanks for sharing your ideas! 👍
I love this program so much! I used to listen BBC Learning English audio; I didn't expect some day I can watch the video. For English learners, it's very educational.
Please CORRECT me if any mistakes. I have 2 flatmates A and B, and they both fascinated in boozer. A is a little bit out-drinking than B, while I’m a teetotaler. At their beer o’clock, usually the off-work time at weekend, they love to knock back amount of beers.
I like you guys,my name is Valdinei and i am from Brazil and i've learned a lot with your videos and audios on cellphone...thanks a lot..it's nice to see your...
It’s hard to imagine that someone can drink himself or herself to death , but I certainly think that drinking too much can be deadly. Thank you for this video.
thanks you so much for making this program. today i saw this web side. BBC learning program give great opportunity to improve their skill. My English skill so much weak. I think if everybody watch & hear this videos their improving day by day...........................Thanks

- Alexander Litvinenko was once described as "teetotal". For that reason the poisoned used to kill him was found all over a tea cup.Such a great show! Congratulations!
Thank you for your video, Neil and Sian. It's a very useful piece of information. I'm not teetotal, but I'm trying to reduce the amount of alcohol that I consume. I'm not a boozer and I don't go to boozers.
i think you should add English subtitle, so for people whose English is not really good like me can understand more the content of the video. it will be definitely helpful. thanks a lot.
Usually boozers are prone to loosing trust and respect to them by their acquaintances which is vital in todays society . I think it starts from not being aware your limits. in other words with out drinking . As a professional teetotaler i strongly recommend you keeping far from away alcoholic beverages. if you can not always do it you are allowed to drink at the wine o clock IF YOU SPOT ANY MISTAKE WE CAN CORRECT IT RIGHT HERE (our mistakes are our best teachers in the world:))

🥂 Women out-drinking men in drinking beer. 🥂 We drink Wiskey at 8 pm every day. It's wine o'clock. 🥂 Fady is knocking back of alcohol. 🥂Sherry is a boozer. Every day she goes to the pub and drinks a lot.
Many young people become out-drinking after the age of 21 as they are legally allowed to drink liquors. Some of my friends remain as teetotalers but others are already serious boozers. One of these heavy drinkers never hesitates to pour vodka into a glass and knock it back in one swallow. I enjoy chatting and drinking with her at beer O’clock on a regular basis though I cannot catch up with her when it comes to drinking.

Sian is a beauty as well
Hello, welcome to News Review the program we give you need to talk about the News.
Hi I'm Neil, and joining me is Sian. Hi, Sian, "Hi"
What's our story?
Today we have a story about an area which women are becoming equal with men.
Women becoming equal with men. it sounds like it's a positive story
Let's find out more from this BBC World Service News Bullitein.
==============================================================
A grobal study of drinking habits has shown the women have nearly ( caugh up ) with men.
in terms of amount of the alcoholic consume.
and now ( ) four million poeple born between 1991 and 2001 found that
women's drinking has increased due to a number of reasons.
incuding falling prices and successful marketing.
The study has concluded the public health efforts must focus more on women.
==============================================================
ok, A study around the world has shown that women are now drinking nearly as alcohol as men. and they think this is due to tippy drinks , and also drinks be marketed at women.
ok, Sian you've been looking at this story on the News website.
What are the words,phrases and expressions that people are using to talk about the story.
ok. as this is story about alcoholic and drinking,
there are lots of expressions to do with drinking in this stories.
so I've picked out four. and they are "out-drinking", " wine o'clock"." knocking back", "booser"
and so , "out-drinking" , how's that appearing in the headlines?
ok, first of all , in this headline , Telegraph.
we have this headline, Women may be out-drinking men thanks to the march of wine o'clock'
ok. so out-drinking meaning drinking more than , and this prifix out is quite common. isn't it?
yeah, we can add "out" to mean "more than" ,"greater than" ,"longer than"
for example , out number means bigger number than. or out live means live longer.
so for example , women often out-live men.
and can you give us an example of out-number?
out-number ,so for example , if you are at football match ,and you are supporting the home team. generally the fan from the home team out-number the away fans.
so there's more of them.
============================================================
Am I the only one who thought out-drinking means outside drinking like in the parks , on a river side etc ? what's wrong with me. omg :-D
============================================================
right. good, and we have wine-o'clock.
yes, in the same headline , same in the Telegraph. we have
Women may be out-drinking men thanks to the march of 'wine o'clock'
this is a sort of homourous , funny expression meaning an appropriate time of the day to start drinking wine. "YES!!"
yes, exactly, it'not a set time just when somebody feels that it's appropriate to have a wine.
it's not on the clock. just after the numbers?
No, it's not a actual time and we also have the expression "beer o'clock" in the same way sort of to be ( ) also.
and this is quite new term,but they have been added to the Oxford English dictionary recently. I think it's last year.
so they are official.
they are official ,now, so beer o'clock, wine o'clock
it's about 11:25 in this studio in the morning.
that's not really wine o'clock.
No!! generally it would be around five, six after work that people start saying it's wine o'clock.
ok. next we have "knocking back" in the story in BBC News.
we have Women have all but caught up with men at knocking back alcoho, a global study of drinking habits shows.
so knocking back ,drinking something quickly or a large amount particulary alcohol.
yeah. always almost with alcohol , isn't that really?
you don't say knocking back water very often, it's more,
here's an example , he or she is knocking back the wine.
generally it means that they're drinking quite quickly and quite a lot of it.
do you knock back the wine, Sian? "NEVER! " ever.
Let's move on from that.
next one which is booser
ok, finally we have boozer in the Sun. we have wine o'clock again.
it says Wine O'clock? young women are Gigger boozers than men
and risk drinking themselves to death.
ok boozer it's word that means a person drinks a lot of alcohol.
it comes from slang word booze meaning alcohol.
so someone says I'm going to buy some booze ,
it means I'm going to buy some alcohol. very informal.
and there's also adjective , isn't it?
ok, so , boozy , you often hear expressions like boozy lunch, boozy brunch meaning lunch or brunch with alcohol.
=========================================
sounds quite delicious :-D
=========================================
and in the UK, you can use the word boozer to describe the location where drinking happens generally which is pub.
it's a slang word for a pub, a boozer.
so, I'm going to the boozer.
there's a nice and old fashoned boozer in the country side. "Nice"
ok, now we have a bit more information about this story Dr, Tim slayd led study, let's hear what he has to say.
===================================================
Increased exposes to alcohol , and incresed physical and mental health risks associted with drinking too much. so that there's something that we really need to continue to look at and do something about.
(there are some missing words in there I assume)
===================================================
Ok, that's it.
Thanks BBCLE, Neil and Sian for this great program
and every one watching and learning English in the world
Have a great day.
see you again. BYE.
====================================================
This trascription written by me is for my listening skills to improve.
so there are many faults in it which are mainly article A, The and singular , plural.
but if you are at biginner level , it can help you get the overall understanding of this program.
and if you reply some comments about faults in it to my transcripts
It'd be really helpful for all of us.
Thank you. All the best.
