New Zealand has more pressing issues than becoming a republic. The state of our health care is one example. Jacinda should have answered I am here for the Queens funeral and now is not the right time to be having those sorts of conversations.
It's not the PM's fault what questions media ask and the PM has pointed out to media she is there for the funeral. PM Ardern is not making NZ a republic, she is just pointing out that people's attitudes are changing, just like the Queen was aware of that too.

Presidents tend to use the apparatus of state against their opponents. The FBI in the USA for example. With a monarch there isn't that problem because they are head of state until they die or decide to abdicate.
Agreed, the Waitangi treaty would need renegotiating. It’s not trivial for NZ to career towards republicanism for good reasons. Australia should take notes and look after their First Nation people before suing for republicanism.

I wouldn’t underestimate the importance of the relationship of Maori with ‘Queen Victoria and her successors’. ‘The Crown’ is not just some ephemeral synonym for ‘the government’. It is clear in the Treaty of Waitangi that that relationship is both specific and personal. Whilst a Republican leaning Kiwi myself, I still see value both in the constitutional arrangement and the relationship. I also think that it is vital that the Māori perspective is front and centre in any debate we have. The gains of the last three decades are far too critical to imperil and the realities of a Republican government when we have no written Constitution require a lot of consideration. We are a long way from a solution to that and while the former PM, Sir Geoffrey Palmer has his draft, I am more than cautious about his ivory tower experimentation. He is infamous amongst officials for declaring that the inclusion of reference to the Treaty of Waitangi in State Sector legislation was essentially meaningless in law. It proved to be otherwise.
She's probably right though, the reality is that in this era NZ has very little to gain from being linked to the UK. Economicly NZ seems to be in a far better position than the UK. Per capita kiwis earn more than in the UK. These days on the world stage, the UK is very much thought of as a dieing empire of which it's citizens are clinched to the memory of. One would hope that future NZ has the capacity and sense to declare itself a republic, claim the 2 million hectares of crown land it's own, and form a constitution where by all NZ citizens have equal opportunity within their country.
Agree fully with you: but....two further points, the Treaty of Waitangi was never ratified (which is kinda Palmers point in law) and Queen Elizabeth in seven decades never did a single thing in advancing a ratification or re-ratification in her own name. Bluntly, Victoria never sign her assent and the Houses of Parliament never sent it to her. As Māori I feel adamant that the Treaty must be forefront of any constitution, but that will come from a new generation of rangitahi.
Can’t imagine why NZ becoming a republic is so important. Not like it’s somehow not an independent country. Always thought it was admirable how NZ, Australia and Canada, along with others, maintained that tie to the UK. While some similar countries in the Caribbean may cut that tie in the years to come, it’s not a surprise. Their relationship to the UK was more complicated and there are still grievances. Don’t think the same holds for NZ/AU/CA. Now that the UK left the EU there is an opportunity to forge a closer bond and not be so dependent on the US.
That might be her wish and she is working very hard to make it so, but there is a large proportion of the population who disagree. That includes a lot of the tribes who signed a treaty with the Crown. She has written principles of the treaty into legislation she has enacted. The tribes however have signed UNDRIP which was ratified by the government which could lead to tribes governing alone.
She has done a great job in dividing our nation in the guise of unity. It doesn't matter what the people say - she will go ahead with the agenda set before her no matter what. I hope more people of NZ wake up to what is going on - it is heartbreaking.
NZ is totally blessed to have Ms. Ardern as a leader. Based on history, her efforts to make the country a Republic are extremely important, because that form of governance has been shown to promote better democracy, improved economic conditions and a generally improved quality of life for the greater majority. This isn't hypothetical, it's well established. However, history has also shown that major improvements in governing, i.e., transitioning from authoritarian to a democracy are always met with strong resistance from the Far Right and the less educated so her work is just beginning.
What gives her the right to say that New Zealand will become a Republic? It's not her choice! It's up to the people of New Zealand. She's on her last legs as Prime Minister and will most likely be voted out next year and good riddance to her?
@@kanjanathevik5234 A nice person might have spoken highly of a facist dictator for the same reasons. Such gushing is not out of choice, it comes from the pressure of expectation. What great thing would potentially leaving the commonwealth and/or becoming a republic achieve for any member nation? What does becoming a republic do for a nation or its people that it cannot do already? Or is it just pure optics?
Not what becoming a republic would entail. Being a member of the commonwealth and having the king as head of state are not the same thing. Removing the king as head of state, i.e becoming a republic, wouldn't make NZ leave the commonwealth. Countries like South Africa and India are in the commonwealth and are republics for instance.

When a politician says he wants to abolish the Monarchy, what he really wants is to have in his hands a power that belongs to the King, but a politician never has the same sense of responsibility as a Monarch.
I wish Canada's leadership would be as honest. "It's too complicated" is not an appropriate response for a mature democracy, it is the response of a nation with a colonial mindset. Monarchies belong to the Middle Ages.
The present-day monarchy bears only a superficial resemblance to those of the Middle Ages, as you well know. The only question Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders or others need to consider is whether or not they wish to continue to have a powerless British monarch as their head of state. That's not a hard decision to make. Keeping the monarch changes nothing and affects nothing other than a handful of ceremonies and the symbolic connection of your nations to their historic origins. Ending that relationship DOES mean that the question of who will serve the function of being head of state will need to be directly debated and addressed in constitutions, with the democratic consent of the people. That is, in all fairness, at least a little complicated - which doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be done - but it would mean some work and mild to moderate public controversy. All that said, severing the tie during Elizabeth II's reign could have actually led to a backlash in some quarters - an unnecessary political risk for leaders - and doing it right now at the very moment of her funeral would be extremely undiplomatic. Canada will go "full republic" at some point - but I fully expect it to be a low priority issue for your prime ministers because the political dividends of going through the process are so minuscule. Your relations with the USA are far, far more "high stakes" these days.

A president is not mandatory, it also doesn’t half to take over from the PM. For example, Ireland is a republic independent nation, they have a PM and a president. The PM runs the country and the president is more like an ambassador, don’t think he has any real power (like the king of England).
But the fact you’re under the crown, means you DO have an unnecessary level of government governing you.
As someone who lives in a republic, I can tell you how I appreciate the role of a constitutional monarch as an apolitical head of state. You are very fortunate.

@@AntonioGarcia-zr9uc Bruh, we couldn't even make a real constitution hahaha. Wishful thinking.

King has no power. Zilch, zero.

A very very sick Individual this "man" is.
If NZ does become a republic it will cause absolute havoc with the Māori, I doubt it ever will there would have to be overwhelming public support (60+ in agreement) and there simply isn’t.
Why would if cause havoc with them?
@@Joe-og6br because the monarchy is overwhelmingly supported by the native New Zealanders and the latest polls show the majority of non native New Zealanders support the monarch. Plus the treaty was officially enforced by the crown and it is the glue keeping it together.
@@Joe-og6br Why would it cause havoc with them you ask...How does a Republic work?....Maori represent 17% of the population in New Zealand max...Kiss goodbye to any leverage they currently enjoy all it takes is one election and your done.

what are benefits of being a banana republic?
That awful woman does not talk on behalf of us NZ'ers! Most people I know are quite happy to have the British Royalty as our Royalty. The Maori begged (3 times!) for the British to take over the country and give them the protection of the Crown. The Crown and Christian missionaries stopped certain Maoris being cannibals, eating children and slaves especially, inter-tribal warfare and so on. They brought true faith to NZ, wrote down the language, brought medical services and so on for the benefit of the natives. Now certain vocal individuals stir up hate and concentrate on all the injustices of the past, which were actually on BOTH sides. If we became a republic, the Treaty would cease to exist or have any meaning. I pray that will never happen in my lifetime.
So intimate is the relation between a language and the people who speak it that two …
1% speak Maori!

For all those countries demanding apologies, will THEY ever admit to their history, the one with slavery, genocide and tribal murders, we ALL have a history, pretty sure my working class ancestors didn't have slaves or even servants so please can we ALL admit history was bad and get on with improving the future?
There's a balance to be had, when we were colonised by the Romans they did bad things but on balance it was of benefit. What did the British ever do for us?
I personally expect a cringe worthy apology tour when Charles is formally King. Him apologizing for things he didn't do when he wasn't alive as the King of White people brings joy to my day.

The legacy of the woke movement, which Saint Jacinda represents, will be a renaissance of traditional values and their institutions. The Monarchy will not only survive it will gain popularity. Sure some countries will become republics but my guess is that more developed nations will look at alternatives, strengthen their constitutions, and evolve their relationship to the crown in order to maintain their historical continuity and memory.

It's called a democracy. Jacinda seems to forget that she lives in one
Because she doesn't. Democracy left NZ a while ago now, when the left realised that as long as they created enough unemployment and state dependency during their term, and generated enough debt and conflict just before the inevitable handover to the opposition over 2-3 governments, that they run the show. The incoming opposition party spends their entire term mopping up the mess the left have created, and are then voted out by a public that does not completely understand economics or politics. They have gone a step further this time, they have nationalised the media by stealth in the form of "publish what we say to publish and turn off the comments section if we intend this as a pre-emptive gauge prior to a law change or we pull the funding". Sounds like we have a blur between the extremes of both systems of the far right and the far left here. That does not make us a centrist country, either.
@@asiatravel2010 well said she's a piece of works with her own agenda and it's not for the care of our country that's for sure.
Monarchy is Public Relation arm of the UK . Benefits outweigh the costs many times over.
However, queen/king being head of state elsewhere is just ridiculous.
It really just makes sense within the UK, not for the other nations... Having a king in London does not bring tourism to NZ. :)
Her comment about NZ becoming a Republic is last week's news...
Where have you been?
Ardern's a bit a hypocrite. Soon changed her tune when she had to speak to the King.
Did someone whisper in her ear that he can sack her?
What do you expect from someone who's outside of politics qualifications consist of a PR degree, a youth membership of socialist international, and a Tony Blair inturn. I mean she has done extremely well given that but her words lack depth, just platitudes mainly. She relies massively on political staffers and public servants to do anything. Even then she has little conviction and just does what she thinks will look good and/or is expedient.
