The main thing I feel like this movie portrays is that- the smarter women get- the dumber men seem. 😂 she grows up and literally does the standard experience- but with bluntness and strangeness. I love it.

The thing some people seem to miss with this movie is you're SUPPOSED to be uncomfortable. It a movie that sparks thought - not just some comedic entertainment.
People's media literacy is sadly dropping. No attention span to properly engage with the material, mistaking depictions for endorsement, always mandating to be coddled.

With this movie I feel that so many people focus on the literal idea of Bella having a child’s brain and not on how it represents a way to look at the world with new eyes. To me it shines a light on the absurdity of social expectations and manners. The heightened sexuality is a great example of this, it is uncomfortable to watch, but Bella doesn’t say anything anyone disagrees with, it’s just not meant to be said.

It's not so much having an infant's brain. It's having a brain that isn't conditioned to accept all this absurdity.

That is an interpretation but the author of the book comes out saying it's about men preying on vulnerable women and women outgrowing them.
Honestly the fact that Oak gave it a 5/5 is all I wanted out of this video and I am sooo pleased with that. This was one of my absolute favorite films of 2023, and I thought the story, characters, production design, score, themes, visuals and everything that did to bring this film to life was masterful. So thank you Oak for seeing the beauty in this chaotic, wild ride of a film.

Thank you so much for saying it, I was about to not see this reaction based on other people's comments (about them focusing on the child brain and not the illogical, immature nature of society) but Oak is the main reason I watch this channel, so if he appreciated it, then I'll stay.

Mark Ruffalo played the ultimate man-baby and Remi played a soft but confident man. He understood that a woman is allowed to experiment and have fun.
Also, how can you guys take the word from Bella’s husband/father. He was despicable. For him to say that Victoria and him had good times is from his side. This is a movie where reactions change whether a man or a woman reacts to this movie.
Yes! It's his view of Victoria. He wanted to justify his own awful behavior by projecting it onto her. I think her suicide reflected more of her real sensibilities.

In regards to Bella's mother's demise, I agree with the Answer and Diamond Dave's point. Yes, it was clear her mother wasn't a good person but it was also clear that her mother wasn't happy being an awful person, otherwise, she would see no reason to end herself. Her husband kept her as prisoner if she ever tried to escape him so it was clear that the mother didn't want to bring the child into that toxic environment. In my opinion, her mother no longer loved that man at that point in time, she was just afraid of him.
I agree with Mr. The Oak. This is a piece of art. A lot of Salvador Dali influence all throughout.
I love the actress that played Madame. She played Hecate, the goddess of Witches, in the Denzel Washington/Frances McDormand version of Macbeth. She should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for that role. Her full emulsion into that character was astounding!
I think what they did is they showed us the world from her point of view.

@@nikolaiquack8548 Oh, yeah, I think we've all noticed that, that's precisely why I was so disappointed in this movie, that was nowhere near as smart as The Favorite. What I was wondering is... how was it "brillant"?
You guys got it right with the colors in the movie. They do represent the developmental stages of Bella, and not just the colors, but the setting overall. Black and white at the start when she's repressed and the explosion of color when she gets in contact with the outside world. Sort of like the Wizard of Oz. However, as the movie progresses, and Bella matures, you can see how to colors start to feel more muted, earthy and natural, and the set is less surrealistic.
I think the theme of this movie is similar to the whole "frog in boiling water" concept.
How would a tabula rasa react to being thrown into the deep end of having an adult female body and the way society treats them; without the decades of growing into said body or the social conditioning that comes with it?
Also notable how Bella only starts using first-person pronouns once she has fully developed personal autonomy.
And on a personal note, while I can't speak for all autistic people, it's very easy for me to relate to Bella in terms of personality, sense of justice, and relationship to social norms. The scene where she meets Harry and Martha felt to me exactly the same as when you meet other autistic people as an adult and get validated and vindicated in your questioning of these norms.
Once again, Oak nails it.

I have said and I’ll say it again… She should have been at least nominated for Best Supporting Actress in “Macbeth” with Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand. The car with the horse head is a reference to the Horsey Horseless that featured a horse head on the front so that the car wouldn’t spook all the horse/carriage combos that still mostly dominated the roadways at the time.
It was meant to sort of straddle the transition between horses and combustion engines.
It might not have actually ever been produced, but I can see why the director wanted to include it. It’s perfectly whimsical.
I love this film. It's a really fascinating study of the women condition and societal pressures, while being visually superb and very funny and entertaining. It's not a movie to take literally. And Emma's performance is incredible! So glad you did this video!

The costumes & production design were on point! Other notable Ruffalo performances include HBO's I Know This Much is True, Zodiac, Spotlight, Foxcatcher, Dark Waters, The Normal Heart & many more!
Spotlight was phenomenal. They took a tough, true story and made it engrossing to watch.

This reaction really showcases the difference between standard bro reactors and the channels with backgrounds in film or film critiquing.
Kudos to gray shirt guy for not just taking this film at superficial value only but rather seeing those things as devices to tell a more human story of self discovery and womanhood. It's not my favorite film of all time or anything, but i don't know how anyone wouldn't say it's absolutely brilliant filmmaking and storytelling.
One of the more extreme and graphic example of a “coming-of-age” story I can ever remember. I understand those who praise it and those who hate it, but it can’t be denied that it’s entertaining in its own, very unique way.
I feel that a lot of people seem to take the movie litteraly when it is a metaphor about experiencing life and free will. It is a weird movie and it may not be to everyone taste and that is fine, but the core of the story is so powerful and the execution from directing to the costumes and the acting is just incredible.
I thought that she called the baby the monster because she hated her husband and the baby was part him. My assumption was that he held her prisoner as he was planning on doing with Bella. I figured he treated her the way he was treating everyone else and just seeing what he wanted to see when he said she enjoyed being mean, too. I also assumed the baby was the result of r@pe because the husband was such a miserable bastard of course he'd do that. I could be totally wrong.
Now that I’m seeing it for the 2nd time, we only have the husband’s word for it that she called the baby “the monster.” He was truly despicable, and she probably felt she was trapped and ending herself was the only relief for her.
It is such a strange movie. I wanted to switch it off for the first 15 minutes, then I was more and more intrigued and at the end I was in awe. A brilliant movie!
I went in knowing nothing about the movie and came out the theatre with a mix of questioning what i watched, profoundness and understanding that this movie is basically an allegory, so nothing is completely directly simplistic about it while also being that at the same time.
I feel what a lot of people miss is the simple premise the movie is posing: What if an adult woman were free from society's constraints? How would she act? So to approach this, they came up with “she has a child’s brain in her”, because in effect, children don’t have those chains yet.
Bella is as free as she is, because she doesn’t have societal chains, much like a child: She’s blunt like children are, if she thinks it, she says it, doesn’t hold back her emotions (“I’m gonna go punch that child”, “why do I have to keep it in my mouth if it’s revolting?”, “Duncan’s is salty”). Children don’t hold back, and do ask all of the uncomfortable questions when things don’t make sense to them.
Bella enjoys sex, like a horny teenager, so she doesn’t see why getting paid doing something you enjoy doing is bad. Granted, not with some of the men, as she said, some are revolting. Yet, she chooses to do it, and it’s her choice in the end. She doesn’t feel bad about it. She hasn’t been alive long enough to have and accept those judgements and criticism from society.
I could print your faces while watching this movie and hang them on the wall😂
Oak... I need a one hour talk on this movie, it's exceptionally good. You said it right, the story isn't about Frankenstein, that's just the facade, the cover. The true story is about growth, maturity and identity. I know this is an adaptation but man, the characters in this are sooo well written.
I was surprised you didn't quote some of the dialogue. There were some good lines said in here but yeah, this movie is on another level. I've seen a lot of Film d'auteur and this is one of the most memorable, gorgeous, bold, unique and smart films I've seen in a long time.

I love these new movies & TV show reactions but I wish they would start reacting again to some of the older classic movies they haven’t seen
I loved this movie from start to finish. Absurdist, dark, visually stunning, well-acted, interesting, funny, scary, all the things. I understand why there could be discomfort for some viewers, but it’s also important to remember that this is has a very Victorian mindset, when people were either experimenting/questioning (like Godwin and his father before him) or rigid in their outlooks.
I went to see this with a friend, knowing nothing (doing my own blind reaction) and she’d only heard it was “pornographic.” We both came out of it, blown away, and didn’t think it was pornographic at all!
Easily more enjoyable for me than “Barbenheimer.” And while Emma and Mark got all the kudos during awards season, I had 2 thoughts:
1. Mark Ruffalo has definitely been “better” (i.e., more serious) in other films but happy to see him play something other than the Hulk
2. Willem Dafoe is a force of nature and deserves MORE credit!
Mark stood out in a bad way, but he couldn't ruin this masterpiece even if he had tried
Nice reaction! Yorgos Lanthimos is my daughter's favorite director. The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Dear are also fascinating films. My daughter is a film student at USC and we had a great conversation after we watched this film. We think it's about a woman's growth from child to adult and what being allowed to explore the world and having freedom to do whatever she wants means. Notice almost all of the men in her life want to control/keep her and when she doesn't fit what they want her to be they threaten to kill her...except for Max who accepts her as she is and God who created her. Don't get me started on my daughter's thoughts on the daughter being the mother😏
i was surprised because i didnt think oak liked it while they were watching but I was impressed by his assessment of the movie which I think really got to the heart of what the story was.
This movie is a solid 5 for me. As Victoria, she had no choices, in her new life, she begins again as a cherished child, and learns without all our social structures.
I think Oak was the only one that understood the Movie.
This movie is a precious gem. I'm glad Oak liked it and understood the deep themes.

As for what happens in the film, it lifts mostly from the beginning of the book and expands on that but it does take a lot of the deadpan/dry/black (whatever you wanna call it) humour from the book. What's different about the movie from the book is that first of all, it's presented as a book within a book. An editor rediscovers an autobiography by Max McCandles that's prefaced/concluded with a letter by Bella/Victoria. It finishes with the revelation that "Bella Baxter" was Max McCandles fantasy, that none of that ever Frankenstein shit ever happened and it's all refuted by Bella/Victoria in that letter. What did happen was Victoria leaving Alfie in desperation and seeking asylum with Godwin. The interesting thing is, the editor/narrator doesn't believe Bella/Victoria and dedicates a lot of time trying to refute her refutation of the autobiography. I think it makes for a fuller take on the themes that both the movie and book tackle but I can also see why they chose to cut that out from the film
This film reminds me that some people think beyond the next level... Everything and everyone involved in this gem was superb.
Emma Stone has come a long way from The New Partridge Family 2005, which is when I first saw her and hoped she landed the role of Laurie Partridge...and she did 😁
I knew nothing about this movie and started to watch it last week but stopped halfway when something urgent came up. It's definitely a bonkers film that I'll finish up before watching this reaction.
Watched it in theatres, it was a great time! Yes this is a portrayal of frankenstein's story. But this time Dr. Frankenstein is the patched face doctor like the monster, and his monster is Bella, a woman growing at rapid rates and learning about the honest truths of the world through experience and practice, with hilarious black humour. Bella's mother herself called her the monster that she created so that was the most obvious. Loved this movie. Loved the art direction too. Also should add that Bella's story arc is mostly shown in a very honest woman's role to men's expectations of their ideal partner to then hating them because she was being herself but Mark's character didn't even know her was yet fascinated by her at first that lead him into obsession and then anger, and also he was a super creep. While Bella lived her life and openly experimented with things that were fascinating to her which the guy saw as cheating on her or being a whore. She simply saw it as sexual exploration that he first introduced her to as a smart yet blunt character that never breaks her own resolve of seeing things in the light that she does as it's basically giving her knowledge about the world and it's truths after seeing the "poor things". Once she matures to her age and finds out her origins and finds life fascinating she simply chooses to then marry and pursue knowledge in a different field like her creator.
I just loved watching your reactions to this movie because it mirrored every "what the hell am I watching?!" feeling I had when I saw it in the theatre. 😂 A+ facial expressions.
Your scores are very representative of the general reaction to this film. I’m personally on the 2.5/3 end, but I have friends who obsessively loved it and we can’t understand the others’ perception. Either love it or hate it! Was fun to watch with you guys, keep em comin!
I love this movie and Im glad Oak enjoyed Poor Things.
I loved this movie...interesting, engaging and at times disturbing but when I saw that Badd Medicine was watching it I started laughing and thought "Oh, I can't wait!" I never tire of watching that dance scene. I saw an interview with the director who said "Emma is a good dancer so it was hard for her but Mark is a bad dancer so it was easy for him." :)
Oak is simply the best.
So Dave, you mentioned that you'd like to hear our interpretations on the "fish eye" shots and the black and white. I think that the B&W was used to portray the world through Bella's pov. She didn't know the world really, she just knew what God told her and everything was black and white, she was limited to see its true colors until she left and knew the world. As for the fish eye lens, I feel like served as distortion in the world but also as focus in the character's mind, besides artistic choice.
On another note, I feel like this had the best tertiary characters and female roles. Martha, Harry, Swiney and Toinette.
Martha was the face of femininity and wisdom
Harry was the face of cynism and missery
Swiney was the twisted face of femininity but also capitalism and envy
Toinette was the face of socialism and optimism
And as for the supporting characters, I think it's pretty obvious😁
watched it in theatres when it came out, not sure what i was expecting it to be like but it wasn’t that. i was super uncomfortable watching certain scenes let me tell you that -
You guys, positive or negative, are always compelling, but man I was nervous about this one, so Oak giving it a 5 has made my whole week. 30 minutes into the film I was sure this was going to be Saltburn Take Two for you, Oak, and I couldn't be more happy to be wrong. (Also Ruffalo was nominated for a bunch of awards for this role)

I figured Oak would be the one who "gets" the movie. Since he's the one of them with the highest level of emotional intelligence - hence the most creative and analytic (social intelligence). For someone who's narrow minded (simple) this movie would not make a lot of sense or be entertaining. I love this movie.

It's absolutely ok to laugh.
Children are non judgmental, obsessively curious, want to experience everything and explore , are innocent and they don’t naturally label anything as good or bad. Bella is an adult woman with a CHILDs mind. That is why she behaves the way she does. Once Bella leaves her home and goes out into the world, she is exposed to real life of people, relationships, philosophies, beliefs and books. Bella develops her own set of morals and ideals by treating her experiences an scientific experiment since she was raised by a man who was a scientist and a surgeon.
Emma Stone played the character beautifully.

The scores did not go how I expected for the most part going by the actual reaction. I thought the Answer and Mason Quinn loved it and would rate it pretty high. I guess the Answer's rating is kinda in line with what I expected. I knew Dave would rate it low. From the reactions I've seen with him in them, I haven't seen him give a high rating, even when he seems to enjoy it. From his reaction, I thought Oak absolutely hated the movie so that was for sure the biggest surprise.
This film IS an amazingly executed piece of art... But the whole time I just can't get past the fact that she is essentially a child. Even worse when her "husband" comes to get her I was like shouting "that's basically your daughter! 🤮" I totally appreciate this film and the performances are excellent, but I still don't think it's for me 😅
it'a a 'born sexy yesterday' trope which might be uncomfortable for a number of reasons. personally it made me uncomfy whatever that means for me. but it's a good film. I like how different it is

This was my favorite film of 2023. So incredibly acted and the set was absolutely gorgeous
The change to color is her enlightenment in the world beginning.
The title cards seem weird but are meaningful. Like when she leaves with Duncan the first title card is her riding a pirahna into the unknown. For as bombastic as this movie is, some of it's best storytelling is subtle.
The "eyeball shot" as you called it (with the pinhole lens) is used for formative moments. Like when Duncan threw her book overboard she finally realized he's bad. Or when she realizes poor babies are dying and he's on the bed covered in cash.
I absolutely loved this movie...and Emma totally deserved the Oscar...but I can see how some people would be really uncomfortable with the whole thing....

I didn't like the movie or plot at all but I like how it was made/ filmed. Enjoyed your reaction. Your varying comments & scores seem to reflect the audience well.
The writing and dialog is really good. It reminds me of Quentin Tarantino's writing style.
Triangle of Sadness is a good watch, if you want to continue with the Oscars nominations.

It seems to me that in her previous life Bella was a miserable person stuck in a miserable marriage and at that time in history had very few options to change it. She couldn't bring herself to bring a new baby into such a terrible situation and so she took the one option available to her, suicide. I think you may be reading way too much more into it by not understanding that Bella had no options except the one she chose. And Bella was very smart and she probably got that from her mother as well

I didn't like it the first time I had watched it but I couldn't STOP thinking about it. The screenplay is spectacular. Definitely a fan now.
I adore this movie. I had a feeling it wouldn't be any of your cup of tea after your Saltburn reaction, but I love watching yall be uncomfortable 😂
For me, not my cup of tea, but some of the naughty dialogue gave a chuckle, I guess this movie is Marmite (or vegemite as it's called in US?) You either hate it or love it.

😣 as extremely uncomfortable and creepy of a ride this was , as i willed my self into watching it to the end ,i was highly surprised by how REPEATABLE to every human this story was , i believe every developmental stage was represented as a speedy rate , and i honestly appreciate the detailed description of the uncomfortableness , uncertainty, psychological chaos each stage brings , from early childhood's curiosity , hunger for the world , even the innocent unintentional cruelty (let's not pretend kids don't torturing insect and sometimes small animals for fun all the time ) , the sexual awakening , rebellious spirit and emotional unstablity of adolescence, the development of the mind , ideals , empathy and relational aspect with the others , the existential crise of early adulthood, follows the hopes and attempts to be a full active participant of the human race , just to go about in various wrong ways and end up disappointed and depressed about your failures and utter insignificance, once you will yourself through that , you go back to your roots , seek wisdom and support of ones elders and wise friends , you navigate the world and yourself with them this time , just to end up after many years of trying i imagine ( i am not at that stage yet ) in this state of mature stranger equilibrium state of acceptance, of the good and the bad , the ugly and the beautiful, the merciful and the cruel , of selfishness needed for survival and selflessness devoted to connection , a state of existence not crushed by either sides of any opposition there is ,a meticulous endlessly calibrated emotional and existential balance , the one we usually call " happiness "
Emma Stone has real talent, she did perform remarkably in this... BUT I have to say, apart from her performance and the costumes ( they were beautiful, people in those departments don't get enough credit ) I did not enjoy this movie. I understand the argument some make regarding "it's meant to make you uncomfortable" but I still can't help but feel most of it was just gratuitous sexualization of Emma's character. The ideias could be conveyed with less .. depravity on screen. But maybe I'm just a prune despite trying to keep on open mind Idk anymore...
I agree with you. Her journey of discovery and growth didn't need to have quuuite so many graphic sex scenes. One or two would have been fine. It felt like she was naked for more than half the movie... It was probably meant to be empowering because women are so often slut shamed. But I was sitting there thinking "there's more to being a woman than her body".
