I'm a "semi-retired" professional landscape gardener, and I've used that same style of Japanese clippers for years. You're right -- they are the best. A little tip that you probably already know (I just didn't notice that you did it in the video), you can take advantage of the fact that the blades and handles are slightly tilted to one another, and flip the shears over as you're rounding the curve from top to bottom. Same for reaching under the bottom. It's a back-saver, too! Thank you for sharing your hard-won gardening insights!

That looks amazing! I am about to plant 20 boxwoods to replace all of my landscaping we lost to the freeze last February. I’ve never planted anything before, I’m a bit nervous about not having enough 3 gallon plants. I don’t want large gaps between them when the start to grow. Earlier in the spring I did cut 6 boxwood back because I didn't think they were alive since I moved them several times around. They were bare and the branches looked like sticks.. I left the root in the ground as to save the spot for future plants. To my amazement the are all coming back and looks so healthy. I have decided to keep them and see what they do for the rest of the year.
Hello Linda! Thank you for this video on this subject. I just clipped a new boxwood hedge for the first time two weeks ago. I used my electric hedge trimmer and was not happy with the outcome. The boxwoods now look choppy and scorched. I wish I would have used the clippers you used I did clip them in the evening, not in the scorching California sun. Yours look great by the way. Take care 😁

Love ALL your videos. We planted 109 boxwoods a few months ago, to go around our yard. We haven’t pruned them, and was thinking about pruning them next spring, what are your thoughts? Wanting to grow them into a 3’ hedge. I also planted a few in our flower garden, and was wanting to prune them into pyramid shape. They are in somewhat of a spear shape now. When should I start trying to get them into their shape? The variety we chose were the wintergem. They were in the 2 gallon container . Thank you so much.

I pruned my boxwood back this spring and now I have lots of areas that are yellow/brown. I think maybe it is sunburn versus a fungus, not sure. Should I trim back the areas of the plants that are discolored or leave them and let the leaves fall? If I do, some of the plants will be very distorted shape wise. Thanks for your advise.
Looking beautiful Linda, plants too 😉. Your work or should I say Love for, is outstanding. We had boxwood blight in 2019. All boxwoods were removed, and were plentiful in my area. I didn't mind so much as I planted other plants, making my Own gardens, not a replica of others in the Association I live, which is difficult for me, since I am very much My own and have my own style. I love yours however as its Your own Unique style!! Great studded sandals. Oh .. you might add where you get your hedge shears sharpened. If you hold the shears inverted, the blades of the shears will present more completely and more closely to the plant- giving you more control. The Japanese use them this way and even have shears with curved blades. I enjoy the videos- Thanks
when did you start shaping them? I have box woods that have been in the ground about a year now and they about 1.5 ft tall. I believe they are green velvet boxwood and are not growing as fast as yours.
Here in France, box tree moths have been ravaging boxwoods the past few years. I hadn't had any problem with the boxwood balls on my balcony in Paris until a couple of months ago, and now they've died. Not sure what to do. Could you possibly address that issue in the upcoming video you mentioned? Thanks!
You should thin out branches from the center as well. If you just shear the ends, you will end up with sparse brown interiors. Thinning helps to keep the plants healthy, since it provides more sunlight and better air circulation to the interior of the plant.
Cuz I have trouble thinking outside the box! But you and someone else suggested it and I tried it yesterday! On top and sides the top up works best, but at the bottom and in balls you guys are so right! Thank you!

Hi Ms. Linda i have an amateur question, when planting boxwood do you put more than one plant per hole or does 1 plant produce that fullness?

Do you ever have any browning of the leaves that have been cut in half after pruning?
Yes. I don’t prune when temp are very hot or subject to frost.
