  • This video very quickly shows how to power on an NVIDIA Tesla K80 GPU. The important points are making sure you power with a 12v CPU connector and not a PCI-E connector. These cables have different pin outs. Ensure that your BIOS has "Above 4GB Decoding" enabled.
    Finally try PopOS. Its great,

Huge thank you for the Pop! OS shoutout. I just bought a K80 (hasn't arrived yet) as I'm looking to go into deep learning, and had experience before of trying to setup tensorflow/work with CUDA on ubuntu in the passed. But now that I know of an OS that's already pre-setup for deep learning, I can spend more time playing with that instead of pulling my hair trying to figure out why my environment doesn't like itself. So once again, thank you! :)

Glad to help! Pop! OS is pretty cool. I like it. I use at home on a few machines but its nice to have something that installs NVIDIA CUDA and other stuff so seamlessly. I have never tried System76 hardware, laptops etc so would be interested to hear about anyone's experiences there.
But the OS is a great install experience. Also like the artwork!!

Hi Robin, Thanks for your video of Tesla K80. I have a question, I also purchased one on ebay, installed in my system today, but they didn't actually working. My system did detect 2 K80s installed, but I cannot run Vray Benchmark. GPUz also showing everything blank except its name and some basic specification, probably read from its bios, no GPU speed, temperature. I tried almost all the tesla drivers from new to old still didn't work, no Cuda or OpenGL detected. I am not sure if it was the card itself broken or some setup issue. Did that ever happen to you, like have difficulty setting it up?

I know I will need external power to run this and will have to use a PCIe extension lead as the computer is only compatible with low profile GPUs. I am not worried about how fast things are processed - but it will need to work. Do you think it will be possible to run if I buy this extra kit?

I've made 2 others videos where I tried a single high performance fan and then one with 2 smaller fans but high CFM both worked really well I think the average temp was below 70 on each. The single fan configuration did not go above 60 just because the fan is crazy good. Here are the videos.

      K80 single fan setup ua-cam.com/video/I2zYOdfASFE/v-deo.html
The single fan setup was harder to do as required a separate fan controller to be built. The dual fan just plugged into the motherboard fan headers and worked well. Also the 2 smaller fans were much cheaper here is the amazon link www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07TC294GY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1.

Will one of these or a different Tesla card work on the same motherboard with a GTX 960? I would not plan on SLI but rather use the other card to help encode and transcode video. There is some software out there that will use the GPU and speed that stuff up a lot. Handbrake for example if you choose NVenc. To see that it is actually doing something, you can open the task manager in Windows 10 and go to the performance tab. From there look and see if there is any GPU activity, it will look similar to the graph for CPU activity except that the CPU is not doing so much but you will see activity on the GPU. I chose Handbrake because it is free and you don't need extra software to make it work as you might with other software.

NVIDIA did not produce a compatibility list for K80s and I have never found a website which helps with compatibility. My experience is server motherboards ASUS or SuperMicro or ASUS WS (Workstation) class motherboards tend to work. But you should look for a motherboard released after November 2014 as this is when the K80 was launched. What is the make of your motherboard? I have not been able to find anything on an W110 x79. My other suggestion is to looked for a setting called "Above 4GB Decoding" in the motherboard BIOS, you need to set this to Enabled. If the BIOS does not have this it likely will not work. 3D Studio Max supports NVIDIA graphics cards with Driver 430.86 or newer so I think it will work with a TESLA K80 as the current driver of K80 is 442.50 version (which is newer). I don't know for sure but I think it will work. I don't use 3DS Max.

    • @robingrosset6941
      @robingrosset6941  3 роки тому +3

I think it will boot but you are close to power limits 980ti = 250w , K80 = 300w, E5 2678 = 120w so you are 670watts before disk, memory, motherboard budget. When you max out a PSU the system will just shutdown. So if you don’t use both GPUs full on at the same time it will work. If you fully load it will shutdown, PSUs usually don’t get damaged as they have over current protection but I’d consider 800w or higher. Hope this helps

I have had good success with Asus server class, workstation class motherboards. I have not been able to get ASRock x99 Taichi board for example to work with it at all. @@1337-l2e You could use it for that but it's not really made for it. First thing, it is not pipelined to push frames like the GeForce cards, but is instead optimized for extreme 64bit floating point mathematics in parallel. Second, check out how it has no fans and only a passive heatsink; these cards, unlike gaming cards, have to rely on your case fans for cooling. Third, note how it has no video output (no HDMI, DVI, etc.) You will have to set up a graphics pipeline from the card to VirtualGL to VNC or Xorg and encounter a lot of overhead for it.
I have done some light gaming to test this using a Nvidia Quadro K4000 in a HP Z420 workstation I used primarily in a compute cluster, but I am talking about Half Life 2. No ray tracing or extreme tesselation here. Games like Metro2033 still made the thing chug and drop frames.
You could possibly put it in a machine with another video card which is actually for video, but even then you wouldn't see as good of a performance/$ as you would by hooking up another GeForce via SLi.

@@svenduve83 does it fail to boot with the K80? At startup the K80 won’t draw much power as it will be idle. So if it’s failing to boot, check the power cable to the K80 it should NOT be a PCI-E it needs to be an 8 pin CPU cable or you need an adapter for 2 PCI-E cables to power it. If this is the problem then simply no power will get to anything so it won’t power up at all. (With the wrong power cable you are shorting 12v to ground so the power supply will simply refuse to start) The next thing is motherboard supporting large BAR support, “above 4GB decoding” in the bios, if this is the problem you will get lights on the motherboard when you hit power but it will not complete POST power on sequence. Make sure this is set in your bios.

@@robingrosset6941 another trouble, I wonder if you came across this,
      - ASUS Radeon R7 240 GPU for graphics output
      - PSU 1200, before I had 750, but went up to 1200 to be on the safe side
BIOS setting above 4g enabled, CMS disabled, I cannot set the BAR sizing to Auto, I don't have that option visible
OS is PoP OS, with nvidia drivers installed, as indicated in the installation guide
I had the GPU powered initially with the adapter cable, but now have free CPU 8P 12 V with the new PSU, so I think there should be power.
As indicated on another channel, the GPU was running and I got CUDA going too, and trained a light weight model on the weekend for testing purposes, via nvidia-smi I could see both GPUs (as its two 12 GB), and via darknet, I could run the model choosing 1 GPU or actually both.
Now trying again, it doesn't complete POST power on sequence and I get the ASUS error code 97: "Console Output devices connect" from the handbook. The screen at the same time shows "BIOS updating LED Firmware, Do not shut down or reset the system to prevent boot failure", if I disconnect the Tesla K80 it boots as usual.
Searching the internet and forums, I tried, BIOS update, CMOS reset, new PoP OS install, different power cable settings... running out of ideas.

      > long answer : i tried 1 GPU on the "Second" PCIE slot and i used 2 Cable PCIE as in two separate rails. (not one cable that split in 2 from a single rail). booted the system ... after few minutes into windows, its showed up as x2 "3D video controller" under "Other devices" on the "Device manager" then windows started the drivers installation process for Tesla k80 like, took like 5min or so!
removed the GPU, i removed the i/o shield from it and i set it in the 1st PCIE and the second GPU on the second PCIE slot, power each with a single rail (one cable that split in 2). it worked ! detects as x4 Tesla k80.
      thank you !

Thank’s for the information. That’s funny, I’m actually buying several from the same guy on eBay. They have an OEM bracket installed but that’s no problem. I have the correct bracket. The GPU acceleration allows for faster model building, larger model building and the testing different hyper-parameters. Usually 10 to 50 times faster than on conventional CPU. The “Above 4G” setting is the only one I needed. The key was the motherboard supporting the card. I have only had luck with Asus MBs

That’s how most servers power it with a single cable. If you only have pcie connectors the 6+2 type you can get an adapter to 12v 8 pin CPU connector. www.nvidia.com/content/dam/en-zz/Solutions/Data-Center/tesla-product-literature/Tesla-K80-BoardSpec-07317-001-v05.pdf
