I've waited several months and then decided to finally buy the 7950X3D. After having tested it, do I regret buying it? Yes and no, there's two things I discovered while testing this Ryzen processor. First of all, it's not as good as many of you expect it to be, and secondly - it has an incredible ace up its sleeve.
So yes, there's criticism as well as praise for today's CPU. Meet the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X3D. Essentially a regular 7950X equipped with AMD's 3D V-Cache along with some fine tuning, to which we'll get in a minute.

X3D chips don't run any cooler. On the contrary. Although they do have a lower TDP, they run warmer than their counterparts due to the 3d vcache impairing heat transfer. I have the 7950x3d and have had the 7950x using the quantum velocity 2 block. Same idle temps yet higher gaming temps lasso'ed to the ccd cache.

7950x3d would make a good workstation horse. I like that drop in power consumption thus overall temp. Idle is bad but can be tolerated...just. It is good to know the umpfh is there if needed when compiling things. It is good to know there is much of extra memory close to cpu in case some day it can be used in every day loads. Or does it already?
Did you deploy that "Graphically Ghallenged" popularized "23% Faster" hack? How current firmware and mobo updates affects overall behavior? Is there (meaningful)changes after 6 months?

i believe u should change ram to g skill 6000mhz cl30 and use buildzoids secondary timings, Great job doing this much testing tho Nicolas, however my 7950x with UV -30 and tweaked ram gets 185fps average and 147minimum At FHD using 4090. Ram for basic zen 4 matters a lot. Before trident z kit i had crucial 4800mhz cl40 i thought ryzen doesnt care about it and went for cheapest kit, and i was so wrong. Far cry 6 had average 148fps using that kit, compared to 185fps using trident z. SO RAM IS A MUST!

Yes and no. For the most part, Microsoft and AMD did a good job patching and fixing previous software-related issues with the new X3D parts.
So I no longer experienced any issues and with most motherboards you don't need to dial in and configure any special settings related to the Cache part. :)

    • @churchseraphim1380

I own a 7950x3D rn, been using it since July. It's a great CPU but there are some situations where you want to use process lasso. I honestly would recommend just using process lasso instead of relying on the driver. I've had lots of weird experiences with the driver. Process Lasso is pretty much set and forget. I put Prefer Frequency in the bios and manually add games to the V-Cache CCD. Have great experience doing this. Standard applications will try to use Frequency CCD and games get the V-Cache die.
I was worried it would be more annoying than it is but it really only takes a good 30 seconds to add a game to the process lasso list and then you're done for that game. 85% of games in my experience like V-Cache. It could be annoying if you play a ton of different games I suppose. In some of the games I play (Kerbal Space Program) I saw a massive 3x performance increase in certain scenarios with the V-Cache CCD and that for me makes it worth the small fuss.

Doesn't seem to work correctly at all in Linux... unless you manually force CPU affinity per app, bit it works fine in windows, especially with process lasso, im also using CAS30 ram, seems to be much more performant. I also overclocked mine with a -30mv, +200 PBO, 85C temp cap, now easily passes the default clock speeds hitting closer to 5.8+ ghz in some instances.

Great analysis mate. If the only benefit of the 7950X3D is that it has a few more fps for gaming, then the 7950X is the way to go. I primarily need a powerful CPU for 3D architectural visualization and I'm sure the 7950X is still gonna run Cyberpunk 2077 incredibly at ultra settings with path tracing. I have an RTX4080 and game on an ultra short throw projector that is capped at 60fps so I personally don't need a crazy high fps count. For majority of the work related benchmarks, the 7950X scored better and it has a larger 4.5MHz processor. Having said all that, wouldn't you say the 7950X is the better option for me?

I wonder why there's no benchmark data for the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. It would be a great comparison between the 3D line-up in both gaming and multi-threaded workloads to better show the value of the higher-end product. 😅 Nonetheless, the graphs are presented greatly; it's clean and conclusive of the 7950X3D's improvements over time. Moreover, it's still going to be a GPU bottleneck using a 4090 in 4K because newer titles are becoming more graphically intensive due to lack of optimization (Cyberpunk).

The other cpu every core was at 5.5 and is clearly a CPU that could be pushed with an overclock. I would go as far as to say you have a bad 7950x3d, or if this is the case on them all.... So, there is basically 0 sense to go for Intel in these last generations - be it productivity or gaming. Ryzen requires cheaper memory (it needs just 6000 30cl for full power vs intel's 7200), requires cheaper cooling solution (much lower tdp) , drains much less power AND guaranteed platform lifespan is so much better. All this while going neck-to-neck in real word use-case performance. I won't even mention 7800x3D that basically equals to i9 and 7950X3D in gaming for half the price, can be cooled by stock cooler and needs even cheaper memory because big l3 cache compensates for the latency. Well done AMD!

Looks like the new i9 is faster. I wanted AMD though.

They screwed themselves by not going all out on Vcache for all cores.

i have 7900x,SMT OFF,pbo 105watt tdp(145watt),negative 20 all cores and with a 3080 12gb, i have better results at all benchmarks from your 7950x-3090.Try same configuration and let us know your results.I think that 7950x3d is worst than 7900x.i have the same memory kit,and over 10 1st places at 3dmark with this and other pcs. With gb board 30300 cinebench -20 all cores and 29400 at 145watt.I think that your board its not so good
