The thing I'm a bit disappointed with is the inability to control which CCD is used in a game through the Xbox Game Bar. So far it has worked well parking the cores of CCD2 until needed, but it would be nice if you could tell it to do the opposite, with just a check mark.

AMD is frustrating because they are so close but always have little issues that stop them from providing true competition to intel and NVidia. I bought and returned a 7900xt that I pad $850 for. On paper for $850 nothing Nvidia offers came close to the performance of the 79xt (at the time of purchase at least) But after getting it, I had to do so much trouble shooting it was ridiculous and the best I got was it works as intended "most of the time" which is unacceptable for the most expensive card Ive ever purchased.

This is precisely the reason why people talk about the "AMD Experience". It's incredibly frustrating to think you got a good deal, and expect reliability and a smooth day to day experience.
Only to run into a bunch of byzantine fucking problems that half the time have no solution, or incredibly granular ones that have to be done on a case by case basis. I wouldn't be surprised if a good chunk of the market has tried AMD stuff, been burned, and defaulted to Nvidia ever since.
I'm a Mac put it well: This is their top of the line, most expensive CPU... and it's a bumbling, cobbled together, inconsistent mess. It doesn't inspire confidence in AMD at all.

I've been using my 7950x3d for a couple of weeks now, and it's fantastic for me. I do use Process Lasso, and that makes the difference. For the money, I agree that the user should not have to do the things required to get this processor running properly, like BIOS updating and chipset driver updating and having to use 3rd party software. Although, I like to tinker and this is not a big deal for me to do. It all came together with process lasso. If you have this chip, you really should use Process Lasso, they were meant for each other. I would not recommend this chip for someone looking to plug in their new computer and just go. It does take a little extra, which should not be the case, but when you do, it's a really good processor.

So, for games, I run them on the CCD with the 3d cache (cores 0-7) and all my software programs run on the second, non-3D cached CCD. (cores 8-15). For programs like Davinci Resolve, I set that to run across both chiplets and all cores.

Kinda. I have some idea of what my company makes....but I'm very concerned with production safety, training, and compliance with all laws (and even going above and beyond them and even sometimes well above our own company standards if I see a gap). I'm fortunate enough to work for a company that will back me on this because a few grand spent on training is nothing compared to a few million dollars in a lawsuit (the argument I use to appeal to the bean-counters). The argument I use? I don't want anybody getting hurt. I don't want to see blood pools. I don't want to talk to the children of hurt people.
Sometimes specificity like that is a Very Good Thing. Never tell people they don't care; I just can't care about and monitor everything. But there are people like me in every company and industry.

I like the take overall, project car is a good description. I bought this cpu intending to tinker for hours on it. I would say that the allure of the 3D cache will always be there because of just how magnificent it is at certain games and fixing certain issues. Hard bottlenecked games running 25% faster is literally 2-3 generations worth of IPC gains and the price is ultra competitive vs the 13900k especially when the 7800x3D comes out. I think AMD was a bit caught of guard with how good these chips were going to be and the 7950x3D may have actually been last minute planned. Hence no thread director. But I think since AMD saw how good it sold they’ll invest in the future for it.

I wish the prices were true in my country (central europe) - wanted to go for x3d cpu again but not only 7950x3d is more expensive its also literally out of stock constantly. Literally paperlaunch, one of the biggest retailers in my country sold 42 units so far, thats it.
Decided to go with 13600k, got cpu + z790 mobo for sub 600$, overclocked it to 5.6ghz on p cores, 4.3 ghz on e cores, sitting at comfy 50 degrees while gaming with ak620 cooler. Basically got 13900k performance in gaming for a fraction of price.
Im kinda pissed at amd, 2 out of 3 cpus in pcs i build and have at home currently used are amd, loved 5600x and 5800x3d. But here AMD releases (hopefully) better cpu 2 months later - imagine the outrage it intel did that - mobos are still expensive, problems with memory controllers, problems with cpu scheduler, not that amazing performance compared to 5800x3d.
Shame just as soon as AMD regained its position in CPU market started doing what they did in the past, they literally went from being extremely dominant in DYI market with am4 and having like 84% of sales in cpu dyi market to 67% in a span of two years and AM4 sales are still almost 4 times higher than AM5 for a reason. Disappointing platform.

Nah, IMO the "project car" thing and the "AMD's thread director" thing is him over-sensationalizing
How many new games do you play in a year?
For me, the answer is "less than 10"... less than 10 times a year I have to click a box in Process Lasso to direct my games to the correct CCD. Hardly worth even commenting on. AND because I'm in control, I know the right thing is happening, rather than relying on some black box from AMD or Intel that will likely fail me just when I need it. (You might note that many Intel folks are also using Process Lasso to bypass Intel's less-than-perfect hardware thread director.)
      ---
Now, that said, I agree with him that AMD's core parking, Xbox Game Bar solution was scummily low effort for high profile hardware. BUT it didn't surprise me in the least because historically, AMD has *always* been bad at software. I didn't get invested in the 7950x3d *until* I knew there was third-party software that would let me solve the problem my way. He complained of "shoot the messenger" but I would counter with "fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me"

I bought this cpu and frankly (from a current time and current bios update/windows improvements standpoint) this cpu did waaaaaaaaay better then i expected. In fact... i have 0 issues with threads being on wrong CCD. Sure i did tons of research to follow all the x3d cpu required stuff (like x3d optimized driver etc). Now just works, and core parking actually is a really neat power saving feature. The moment you alt tab out of a game and require stuff there the other core unparks, moment map loads it works again.
54°C during (single core heavy) game + multitasking photo editing software (15-30% cpu usage, only once i got it to 51% few seconds. Overall, to critical this review.
Also i got it for 699€, by no means cheap but it's the cheapest price for a top (16 core amd at launch) yet, and it has 3d cache now, so between lines it's 600€ cpu and future save. Also 7800x3d was reaaaal option (same for 7900x3d) but for +50%, getting double cores that are sometimes faster (ghz), the 7800x3d looks like bad deal for someone wanting always enough cores to never get sloppy pc processing speed. Alas enter 7950x3d. I thought about upgrading to 9950x3d but, i'm certain i can delay it a long time until that cpu drops to 500€ and even then i might not need to. This cpu is bloody fast, efficient, and 'actually' works.
I bought cpu (unlike some reviews) and i'm happy with it (to give another side of coin.)

After using for week and doing all the required stuff to make it work, this cpu is better then expected, lower temps (54° most of time) then expected, faster then expected, scheduling game works better then expected, core parking/unparking is actually very dynamic (alt tab out of game and just unparks other cores for say image editing), go in game and instantly in parked stadium again with faster 3d cache for gaming ccd enabled. A. They didn't solve the overclocking problem. By that you can't overclock the 3d cache even if you somehow brought the operating temps down to at most 20° with some unholy refrigeration setup. And unless they make a larger processor scrapping the overlapping cache, make a nonplanar chip with an expensive as hell shroud and heat sink or somehow have us cool the processor from both sides they can't make it overclockable as it is too volatile. They could avoid hard 90s, but no processors do(hard 90s have extreme resistance and as such are hotspots and integrated circuits are filled with them). Stacking the problem makes the flaw exponential.
    B. Scheduling for it is crap so it will improve with time. As is, they use the Xbox app in part for management so if you've removed the bloat you're going to be lacking. They could have given us a convenient tool to manually set it up per .exe but they didn't.
    C. AMD can't deliver software on release and never has. AMD drivers have a smaller footprint and work better on outdated systems. This is the forerunner, a flagship, and AMD doesn't make flagships. They make good for the price.

I like the power consumption graph of the 7950x3d (see linus tech tips later in his video). Like 60 watt, 7950x was double, raptor lake 13900k 90watt. Now the big question is can the 7950x be tuned that way, i'm not so sure yet. Linus seems to suggest agressive downclocking and this may not be in de 7950x no matter how you tune it.
If i can get performance to watt equal on 7950x i would instant buy it, 600€ is a steal for it (knowing the 5950x was so long 830€ and then just when 7950x launched 600€, now finally going 500€).
To be honest i'm also still tempted for the 7900X3D, 12 cores would be perfect for me (one of reasons i waited just like you after seeing the 5900x3d, i want best of both worlds). But this cpu is overpriced 680€ (600€ one shop now, right direction), 550€ or lower it could become the value king in 3D land when number of cores are also important.
7800x3d is tempting now, but also not. First of all it remains a 8-core. Sure the 6-core 7600x beats 5800x already in cinebench like stuff, so 8 core is really good, but why stay at this core count for 500€? Just looking at the still brand new 7900x for 400€ that doenst feel right.
Buying amd cpu was never as challenging. Waiting for 8950x3d is also wrong imo. I waited AM5 (skipped am4) because corona price hike on them and because i knew i couldnt upgrade (wich was so nice hearing all those ppl drop in 5800x3d in their old amd motherboard). With 2025 being potential end date for AM5 i considerg only 3 cpu's gens be certain for it (maybe 4 but don't count on it). Upgrading one cpu gen never is worth it (except maybe Sandy bridge xd). So i have to buy now 7000 serie (but when it's bottomed out in price) and then later 9950x3d when bottomed out in price to have the most efficient price and upgrading strategy, this disqualifies the 8950x3d as purchase.
And Intel? No upgrade, insane power consumption (sure you can tune it but when tuning amd is even better then it already is compared to amd), and 66% cores that might be useless in lot of situations, no thanks. Meteor lake might be sort of what i like but still to short upgrade window, probably price hikes (everything suggest Intel wanted higher raptor lake price but couldnt, - i'm sure meteor lake will be that thing). @@ImaMac-PC I agree in general, but I did remember the other day that the first time intel launched their hybrid design things were also super messy, like a good few games not even working with the E-cores enabled.
In my personal experience I would say that this launch went somewhat better than that depending on your game list, but I think what clouded intel's mistakes was the performance of the P-Cores and the return to form w.r.t multi-thread performance across their lineup.
My issue with AMD here is basically just how rushed this launch was, but Intel is honestly no different though I expected more from AMD these days.

It seems like AMD's return to competitiveness in both the CPU and GPU realms has resulted in products with more flaws and asterisks coming out of AMD, Intel, and nVidia than we've ever seen before. Competition is supposed to make everything better and cheaper, instead, it just seems to be marginally improving some things while wildly complicating other things, and prices just keep going up.

I used a Asrock x670e Taichi MB, even that was easy to setup for a mother board.
Don’t really get this “games running on the right CCD.”
If the game is glitch free why does it matter?
    I would rather have a 160 watt CPU than a 400 watt’er.
Not trying to burn down my house for a game.
For streaming I still run air cooled (coolermaster 622). My sim racing improved and my lap times reduce with more skill. What am I missing?
    I can’t fix it if I don’t know what’s broken.
My gpu is a RX7900xtx. It runs on 400 watts.
I leave it up to the AMD assistant in Adrenalin to adjust game performance as necessary.
Adrenalin over-clocks the CPU too, Ryzen Master (kinda clunky).
You can do in the bios what Ryzen Master does.
I get 536 FPS in UT2004 setting on Ultra. 120 in F1 2023 w/ RT on VR ultra. 236 in Beat Saber not a stutter or glitch.
No I do not buy other people’s project cars either. Why I went with AMD. Intel Arc is a project car, with no focus in VR. Nvidia makes their stuff out of gold (apparently and Intel, don’t need a heater, mine works fine currently and air cooling is more cost effective.

The 7800x3d is generally good for gaming but there are in fact games that prefer speed to cache. Properly setting up the 7950 involves setting things up with a different program than the recommended and officially supported Xbox gamebar but will provide superior performance to the 5800x3d and in the array of games that do prefer cache it will easily beat Intel. The 7950x3d uses better bins to the 5800x3d. So if you can't handle a bit of tedium either Intel or the 7800x3d. If you want the best all around go 7950x3d. Most games prefer cache size, and the 7950x3d and the 7800x3d have the most cache but the 7950x3d has higher quality. While the applications that prefer speed will perform better on Intel, the 7950x3d has fairly good speed on the other chiplet.
The 7950x3d is the best gaming chip in general. It's just got the facts the windows scheduler and AMD release software sucks holding it back from working right out of the box.
If you were doing only AI specific work where the main priority for the CPU is communicating with the GPU, Intel is still king. Games generally want a decent sized chunk of data readily available going back and forth.

    • @richardbrooksshnee
      @richardbrooksshnee Рік тому

The 3d cache ccd is hypersensitive to internal temps. Resistance is high at hard angles which integrated circuits are full of. That means high heat spots inside the IC. The 3d cache is literally stacking integrated circuits on top of integrated circuits. Instead of an IC, some extra silicone, heat spreader connection method, heat spreader it's IC, IC, extra silicone, etc. That IC IC space is a cooling nightmare. The reason the 3D cache core can't be overclock is because they would die rapidly. The point temperatures are too high and there isn't room to defuse the heat, especially on the lower part of the ccd as it has the cache in the way.
AMD likes to say the 3D cache is sensitive to high temps but is more a case of the cache is bad design to shoehorn in more cache within a smaller footprint. The rest of the chiplet has a heater in the way of the heat sink and the 3d cache has a heater sitting under it. So the entire chiplet has an issue with high heat. And all that talk of "voltage sensitivity" is code for our shoehorned design can't handle temperature.
Unless AMD makes a processor stack where the the 3d cache is on an opposing side of the chip and you have a heatsink on both sides(doubling case size by the way) we won't be able to overclock chips with 3d cache. That idea is totally doable though. It would basically equate to 2 chiplets equating to one but you either need 2 sockets, one for cache and the other of the rest, or a CPU integrated into the mobo.

Thing is: these 7000X3D cpu's do however combine something unique: they are the most efficient pretty much (definitely beating X models and equaling non X models but beating in games for sure). That's one. Unlike 7800x3d they keep the highest boost frequency for other tasks (like starting photoshop or something) 5.6-5.7ghz. The 7800x3d looses that. And for me really important, my 4 core cpu is now really hitting 100% all the time (3570k) it's 7 -8 years old. I want my pc to be and as old and... never hit 100% all the time in 8 years. To do this you must be ahead of the core-game. I see 8-core while really good, as the same 4 core issue i have now in 8 years, to often capped. 12 cores and 16 core will never ever have that problem (1 core might be overtaxed, but that's with all cpu's tbh). It's this combination that makes 79x0X3D so tempting. Doenst mean i'm not considering 7950x at 600€. Also i forgot temps, X3D temps are waaaay better then 7950x temps.

Thanks, subbed. I was really struggling with whether to buy this or not......I love what AMD the company has become since RYZEN was launched.....but, I held off from upgrading my 7950X (since it's a $700 upgrade!!!) and I had just spent thousands upgrading my rig to the AM5 platform. Sadly now I have lost most of my excitement for the 7950X3D and I am happy with what I have......oh well, hopefully AMD learns and keeps improving because I never want to go back to the days of really on having one good cpu choice....

Welcome aboard! The 7950x is the forgotten CPU now that the 7000x3D chips launched. For productivity, I love that all 16 cores are "big boy" cores and no little cores and so I don't need a thread scheduler like with Intel. Plus, it does game great a higher resolutions. If Intel didn't bounce back like they did, the 7950x would have gone up in price and the 7950x3D would have been $999!

Last time I’ll ever buy an AMD product, I even had a massive headache setting up the Gigabyte Motherboard and getting the proper bios for the X670, there is a reason a lot of people just buy Intel+Asus motherboards. It just works, unlike this hot garbage. To make it even worse, I threw away the motherboard box and the cpu box. Now I have to find a way to return it back to amazon and get the Intel 13900KS + Asus.

A lot of people with common sense knew only the 7800x3d would be good after hearing AMD’s design and choices with the 3D v cache. Buying a 16 core or 12 core CPU and having to cut its cores and threads in half for 3D v cache is a dumb idea. Along with having to deal with Microsoft’s garbage scheduler because AMD could not build their own scheduler with the 2 years they had before releasing zen 4. The only zen 4 CPU that is great is the 7800x3d. If you are on AM4 still just upgrade to a 5800x3d.

This video resonated with me, because I build my own PCs for 20+ years now and I full well grown accustomed to this AMD's shtick where they have this new exciting tech and 80% of the time they manage to fudge it up with some BS like this 3D V-Cache implementation here.
Frankly, I am not even sure what's the point of making 7950X3D like this, it's already a frikkin' 700 bucks CPU, go extra mile to $800, but give us 2 well balanced CCDs that both have dedicated 3D V-Cache eack, so at least at the top level you have a product that feels complete and not some hack like 7950X3D and does not require 50 pages guide to make it do its job properly.

I wonder if it's AMD's plan to rescue weaker CCDs by sticking a chunk of cache on them? I got the 7950X, wasn't interested in the X3D part. From my own test experience with several recent top-end chips, I think that Intel is still producing the better silicon. AMD tops benchmark scores because of its greater number of cores usually, and Intel is being damaged by not being able to get its process node down to AMD/TSMC levels, thereby using more power for similar output. Individually, Intel cores (P-cores, typically) beat AMD. Subjectively, my experience on Windows and Linux seems smoother on Intel CPUs too, although the 5950X is an excellent performer, just that the individual cores score lower than the Intel equivalent part.

    • @Matti6950
      @Matti6950 Рік тому

Imo Intel silicon is worse. Raptor lake has some kind of Netburst architecture to it. Even downclocking/lowering ppt optimizing etc, AMD always wins in power efficiency, at 65 watt the difference is quite enormous. plus i don't trust E-cores, sooner or later, you run in situation were they are not usefull and loose 66% of your cores, and are basically sitting at an overpriced 8 core cpu. Also 0 upgrade for Raptor lake users, even though we need meteor lakes power efficiency.

    • @treyquattro
      @treyquattro Рік тому

@@Matti6950 AMD benefits from the more efficient TSMC process node, but Intel chips always beat AMD chips in single core performance at a given tier.
I don't know why you don't trust E-cores or think they will be somehow rendered not useful. E-cores are as their designation implies, just a way to improve overall chip efficiency given Intel's deficit in this area.
I have an Alder Lake i9 system and a 7950X system and the i9 can still beat the 7950X in certain specific areas like single core performance and memory bandwidth, and the Intel system has DDR-5200 whereas the AMD has DDR-6000.
In my objective and subjective tests (Alder Lake i9, 7950X, 5950X, Rocket Lake i7) the Alder Lake processor more than holds its own, on Windows and Linux, and I originally expected that it would perform less well on Linux because Intel didn't work as closely nor as early on Hardware Feedback Interface ("Thread Director") as they did with Windows.
There were problems with games and some benefited from disabling E-cores in the BIOS early on, but those have largely been mitigated. Games are very technical pieces of software that typically have intimate knowledge of the hardware on which they're running. To that end there will need to be some adjustment to take into account heterogenous compute, but that should also be largely mitigated by ongoing developments in the kernel, on Windows and Linux and undoubtedly other operating systems, although Windows is still currently the platform of choice for games. That's changing quite rapidly as gaming improves significantly on Linux; a large part of the issue for Linux gamers is Nvidia's refusal to work closely with the Open Source community rather than any issues with P- and E- cores. Even AMD is looking into heterogenous compute for future CPUs.
