It's easy to hate on things, but is all the hate for today's 7900X3D CPU by AMD really justified? In my opinion - No!
Sure, the CPU has some weaknesses, but does impress overall. So what makes certain people hate this processor then?
In today's limelight - the AMD Ryzen 9 7900X3D. In its core we're still looking at a regular 7900X, but with some changes to it, the most notable one being AMD's 3D V-Cache.

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to the kind #MarkusGebhard! 🤩🏆

keep with the low resolution CPU benchmarks regardless of GPU upgrade. benchmarks are about comparing hardware performance, not getting the actual use case framerates. lots of people want to see what performance looks like at 1080P or 1440P, but 720P can sometimes better highlight where the differences between hardware lie, and tbh there's not really much visual difference between 720P and 1080P on less than 30" display, so budgeted people may want to compare against what they're still using.

In (notoriously expensive) Finland now jan 2024 it is 509€ so it comes to affordable range as 7950x3d is 730€. That difference gives you Samsung 990 Pro or Western Digital SN850X NVME top tier disk. 7900X3D does not need water cooling due to 120W TDP. So it is perfect for a quiet audio workstation DAW build. Extra cache will help with audio plugins somewhere in the future. Also low TDP extends motherboard lifetime if implemented correctly. There is quite a few points over hotter running big brother considering DAW build. DAWBench benchmark software still puts 7900X3D in the top 6 others being 14700K,14900K, 13900K and 7950X,7950X3D. It is so close that it has no meaning i.e 10-20% reach.

As I am seeing in other comments, the hate is not towards the CPU's technical achievements, but rather it's pricing. If someone wants a good mix between productivity and gaming, spending an extra $150 (U.S. pricing) more you gets you 4 more cores and more performance/cache etc. If gaming only, spending $100 less for the 7800X3D is also effective. And while I see why you compared the 7900X/3D to the 13700K as they are in similar segments, I think on the street people are looking at the 13600K ("14" cores) at about ~$100US less than a 7800X3D. So the 7900X/3D is just in this weird spot where the price/performance compared to other options above AND below it make it look like an odd duckling. But hey, either way, odd ducks need love too :D. Thank you for the realistic power usage scenarios in your video! Appreciate your content.

The 7900x3d AT FIRST was trailing the 7800x3d in gaming. Now with learning how the ccd's are, volts, parking cores and whatever works you can beat the 7800x3d in certain games. Seems to be if it's fastest core, or just more of them or something else. I picked up 400$ 7900x3d for black friday. Same price as s 7800x3d which was 389$ (USD) at the time. Love it. Also, faster at vid render, and unity / unreal game engine compiles.

Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) - Increases the power that can be provided to the CPU by the VRMs, doesn't change clocks.
AutoOC - Increases the value of the max clock by 200Mhz. DOES NOT mean the CPU WILL now boost to max clock+200Mhz, just that it CAN if Precision Boost (PB) decides there's enough power and thermal headroom to do so.

I have upgraded from a similar spec like yours i7-8700k (using for 5 years+) to 7900X3D and game on 1440p, the jump has been amazing. Initially I was skeptical about 7900x3d and was in 3way-split between i7-13700k & i5-13600k. 7900x3d has been bashed by all major "tech" youtubers, so i just went with just multiples of comparison statistics (stats dont lie) from online tech reviews. I noticed 7900x3d performance was almost at par with 7950x3d in gaming and the same as i7-13700k (productivity and gaming)with the lowest power consumption. Then 3 months back due to a glitch on amazon I was able to purchase 7900x3d for 430$. In my country 7900X3D then was selling for 650$ (Today 579$), i7-13700k was for 530$ and 7800X3D was over 590$. It was a complete no-brainer deal for me and till today do not regret my decision at all. The 7900X3D has been flawless since 1st boot after flashing BIOS to latest version (1st Boot took less than 2 mins with RAM having EXPO configuration on). Multitasking, gaming is quick and extremely smooth. Currently tweaking around PBO settings to try undervolting it. To conclude do not believe everything these major tech tubers will put out..at the end of the day they get sponsors and they also have to appease the companies to an extent so they can get free products for testing or use. Go with reviews from people who have personally/actually used these products with both pros/cons and avoid keyboard warriors who try-hard, staying significant by bashing products since they heard form xyz source.

Great video Nicolas as always! Wondering how AMD will improve in upcoming new generation cpus on zen 4 platform, Got myself 7950x during christmass for 550eur, had RTX 4090 for a month, however 3 weeks ago brought it to RMA because MSI 4090 suprim X fans are just terrible and faulty heatsink produced high pitch humming buzzing noise as if something lose inside, NOT COIL WHINE, sound was purely produced by chaging fan RPM while gpu was idle. So i got my money back because they didn't fix it, because supplier didnt send it to MSI and he didn't had replacement. So i brought back my 3080 which i didn't sell yet. Now i appreciate that i don't really needed 4090, there just wasn't any game which would take advantage from that kind of power even with 7950x with -30 undervolt and gskill 6000mhz cl30 + buildzoid timings there was instancies of bottleneck.

Watch gamer nexus video's of AMD tour. They tested 5950x3d (both dies x3d). Performance was lower in rendering, and never higher in gaming then single x3d + normal second ccd. That's why. Some people live by the idea that it will kill latency, and the 2nd cache will also benefit. First of all latency will be there (the two caches are not connected). Secondly the second x3d cache cost money (presumably 100€ consumer end price), while games never use that second ccd, and rendering software doesn't use them, most of time. Conclusion, more expensive cpu to make, just as much latency, most of time similar gaming performance (a few rare times it might fix a software issue of wich ccd is used), and slower rendering cpu. The choice makes complete sense economicaly.

It's a good chip that can do both gaming and productivity, but got shifted because of the initial price, and the sister chips performing really well.
It performs worse in gaming when compared to 7800x3d, but that's because people are comparing it to the best gaming chip on the market right now. Remove 7800x3d from the equation and this chip is easily one of the best for this generation, destroying every non x3d and Intel chips out there. And the productivity performance are pretty acceptable, unlike 7800x3d that got beaten by midrange intel chips for this category.
I can't say this for everyone, but I tend to lock in my FPS at a certain point. So the extra 10% I would get from using the sister chips doesn't really matter that much, especially when ALL x3d chips hitting very high numbers in the first place.
But productivity is different. It's pure performance pumping. We don't "cap" our performance during these type of tasks, and this is where 7900x3d shines.
It has way better productivity than 7800x3d
It ran way cooler with lower temps than 7900x and most high-end Intel chips (you can save more with less robust cooling)
Its cheaper when compared to 7950x3d (albeit weaker performance)
Alot of people seems to think in the extremes. Gaming = 7800x3d, productivity = 7900x. What if I wanted both but I'm not rich enough for 7950x3d? Then 7900x3d is the answer.

5900x3d was my plan but never came out, then ryzen 7000 had some clear advantages, better node, 13% ipc, new platform advantages, upgrade path for cpu etc. Then 7800x3d-7900x3d-7950x3d came out. The 7800x3d while incredible, is just a little bit to much more expensive then 5800x3d (400€ would have been nice). The 7900x3d at 680€ was insane, dropped to 557€ but is staying there now. My calculations, predictions and price/performance feel, put the 7800x3d at 400€ target price, 7900x3d at 500€ or slightly less, this would give you less 3d cache cores, but 4 more for pushing some rendering work, also being very power efficient etc. But alas. Also something that put me thinking: 460€ for 7800x3d, if you add 50% of price, you get 690€ wich is the 7950x3d price. For 50% lower price i get 8 slightly faster rendering cores while keeping all other advantages. I like multitasking and just expecting cpu to solve it. After long thinking, and since i skipped two cpu generation wich would have been upgrade for me, i didn't mind paying premium.
7950x3d is now sitting in this pc. (replacing 8 year old Ivy Bridge 3570k) I'm glad you debunked the 7900x3d 'hate', because in 'Mark pc' bench it was clear this cpu is really nice. Only price is a bit meh. Power efficiency was big reason to get x3d cpu. During game and rendering, 7950x3d (and 7900x3d) offer most bank for buck (and ofc 7900 non X, although that one is slightly worse in gaming, but better in rendering Perf/watt.

Here in the US the 7900X3D just went on sale for slightly less than the 7800X3D. It released at $600 and is now at $430 from some retailers. This makes it an interesting deal as the 7800X3D is $450. I just picked up a 7900X3D for myself and am VERY happy with it. The 3D vcache means it plays games with the best CPUs. It pushes my Zotac 3080Ti AMP Extreme Holo with zero problems. Additionally the 12 cores and higher clocks than the 7800X3D make it very useful for power user stuff. Media creation, high end emulation, etc etc. 7900X3D is a fantastic CPU that just released at a whacky price point. It should have been the same price as 7800X3D with the understanding that you make a trade off between the two. For what I paid and for my uses it's just plain better than 7800X3D overall.

How are you liking the 7000x3d? Love mine. Benches show it beating the 7800x3d especially on more core intensive games. Sometimes. I get 144hz /fps on my 3080 so if it’s faster than that, I don’t know since I’m locked in.

The 7900x3d parks 6 cores in gaming and only uses the cores with 3d cache. So in gaming the cpu uses only 6 cores. Thats why it makes no sense if you are gaming. both the 7800x3d and 7950x3d is better for gaming they both use 8 cores with x3d cache. And if you want the best productivity and gaming you should get the 7950x3d. I think this cpu makes no sense.

@@francoissmith5751 Look at the GamersNexes review of the 7900x3d he explains how core parking works and why the none 3dcache cores needs to be inactive for the game to run smoothly. The 7900x3d only have 6 cores with 3dvcahce unlike the 7950x3d and the 7800x3d that has 8 cores with 3dvcache so the 7900x3d will almost always perform worse that these 2 chips. If you understood how the x3d chips work you wouldn't have purchased the 7900x3d. I know you want to defend your purchase but you made a mistake if its for gaming. So its fine ur proud of your purchase if thats what you choose.

It's not a BAD CPU, its just a rather pointless one. In productivity tasks, it is worse than the cheaper 7900X , and in gaming it's worse than the cheaper 7800X3D. Had it been priced a LOT lower, It might have its own little niche. Unfortunately its outperformed in both productivity and/or gaming by its cheaper cousins. Just doesn't make much sense.

Proud owner of this chip here. I like to see on Ryzen Master how it switch to CCD0 when I start a game. I choose this one for a lower price than a 7950x3d and more than 8 core on 7800x3d. Paired with a MSI x670 Pro board and it work really well. You need the latest bios (and chipset driver) to properly use the 3d v-cache. Also paired with 4060 ROG Strix (yes... I know, to upgrade) / 32 gig 7200 Patriot (run at 6000) / Crucial T700 Gen 5 SSD / 1300W psu EVGA / Windows 10 / Thermalright Assassin 7 pipes cpu cooler / Cooler Master storm Sniper Dragon Amd Edition.

now i respect the work that went into this however nobody who buys a 7900x3d is playing these games at 720p. most likely its 1440p and at that resolution you can see there is virtually no difference between x3d and standard part. really if you have a ryzen 7000 chip and play at 1440p or 4 k dont bother because even the fastest gpus cant make much of a difference

The 720p is due to having a GPU bottle neck and no observable difference unless he had a 4090 for testing while having all the CPUs.

Thanks for the test, but 7900x3d is just garbage chip. Will it run games in playable framerate? Of course, but it does not make a good product. The main ones are the lack of scheduler and its price. You can even see in these tests that the performance especially for 1% lows is inconsistent across all games tested here.
On top of it it barely manages to beat 13600k, which has way higher OC headroom as well, so tuned 13600k will be undeniably faster and that chip is ~75% cheaper.
For gaming you are effectively buying a 6 core chip for ~540$, its madness.
This product does not make any sense in current cpu market,
for gaming? if you want am5 platform, get 7800x3d, its actually consistent across wide plethora of game performance and is actually faster AND cheaper.
For productivity or mix of both? Get intel, choose your flavor 13700k/13900k They are both better at BOTH workloads.
    7900x3d is a pointless cpu.
Thanks for 720p tests though :)

All you said is based on old tests. All actual (from last month) test clearly show the 7900x3d results are equal with 7800x3d and 7950x3d in games. Slighty better than 7800x3d. So your theory the games use only 6 cores from 7900x3d is deffinitly not valid. Games clearly use all 12 cores, just 6 coress does not have access to aditional L3.
Ofcourse 7800x3d have better performance/value in games only. But saying it's garbage is saying bullshit. It's great chip for games and work, with amazing power effectivity and temperatures.
