Hey I recorded this on monday and they pulled the demo today, so as per usual the story of my life. Sorry about that. If it weren't for bad luck I'd have none at all.
In Russian, we pronounce the name "Baba Yaga" with the stress on last syllable of "Yaga", not the first. The name itself means something like "Granny Hag", in Russian the word "baba" means a) a rude way to refer to a woman, like "wench", or "broad". b) an old woman (its affectionate form "babushka" means grandmother), c) in its outdated use, a married woman (although I've never heard of Baba Yaga being married). Some hypotheses of Baba Yaga's origins claim that the hut on chicken's legs may refer to an ancient Slavic burial tradition of placing a dead person in a small wooden tomb on tree stumps that kinda look like chicken legs. That is why Baba Yaga in Russian fairy tales is often described as lying in her hut legs against the door, head at the opposite side, and nose touching the ceiling. It's also why a hero who comes to her for advice asks the hut to turn its back to the forest and front to him - the coffin was turned towards the wood so that the dead leave and don't come back to the living. And it's also why she is nicknamed "baba Yaga kostyanaya noga" (granny Hag bony leg, if we translate it literally). So, Baba Yaga is considered to be an undead witch. Some of her depictions are also believed to be references to Slavic witch doctors. In some Russian fairytales Baba Yaga is depicted trying to eat a child, and before that - baking the child in an oven wrapped whole in dough. Wrapping a child in dough and putting them into a hot oven is believed to be an ancient Russian way of healing tuberculosis, although children must've been really terrified of the process. Oh, and Svarog (stress on second syllable) is, indeed, a Slavic pagan god of fire, sometimes referenced as father of Khors, god of moon.
Not the fire, the god of sky, right? Eastern slavs has the god of fire, but his name is forever lost to history (too many burned Russian capitols with achives in it, Kiev in mongolian invasion, Moscow in Napoleonic one, so there is really big gaps in data about Rus' paganism that must be acknowledged, while neopagans just fill them with fanfiction). Also Finland and Baltic ethnicities have their own analogues of Baba Yaga in their mythology, hag that guard border between life and death and open path in it when need for hero to travel in lands of dead and return is arise. Slavic mythology also has this border as Smorodina river (not as name of berry but as Smrad, so "river of hellish stink") but its ties to Baba Yaga as its guardian is less clear
Funny that Baba is also a word for "Granny" in Japanese. I'm not Japanese, I just know. "Granny Hag" is "Kuso Baba", if you ever heard in an anime. Anyways, thanks for the folklore that is needed to delve into this story line.
I think Baba Yaga is what's left from an ancient goddess deep in time. Perhaps a reference to a being from thousands of years ago. She held something important that we forgot about. There are clues like the mortal and pestle, the connection to the tiaga (forest) and animals. And all of the childhood stories about magic and curses. There's something big we are missing here from the myths. I think it's tied to when mankind spread across the Eurasian steppe into territory that belongs to something else.
Ooh Thats sounds more than awesome (but they need original authors as consultants to not fuck up universal sex symbol of the internet, the Howl himself)
Wow, that wood filling in feature so you don't need a bunch of angle shapes is amazing, also the trees getting knocked down by the hut was a nice touch
Oh Splatty I'm with you 100%, this is like my absolute dream-job, be happy as can be to be a witch in the wood. - and who doesn't want a walking magic mobile home (bigger on the inside then out hopefully) like Sheelba of the Eyeless Face. Hope this gets fleshed out into something wonderful.
This game is the one that come closer to what I want, wich is a base building game where I can have a mobile base... although isn't exactly the base building game that I wanted, which was something more survival oriented, still I'll try this one...
That was my thought. When he was saying that he didn't see many game mechanics I kept thinking "my man, you're playing the game right now!" Wandering the woods, collecting ingredients, interacting with magical elements. This video really hooked me hard.
It's an Inquisition conspiracy. I'll bet when you woke up this morning, you didn't think someone would mention the Inquisition, because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!
I love the point made by baba yaga when you first get the chance to arrange the house. It seems like there are options to choose what kind of witch you'd like to be, which I think is really interesting. This game looks really promising
@@classycasual3910 Tbh I never got the joke.. Like, whenever anyone talks about how deadly he is, they talk about the pencil... I feel like someone of Wick's talents could do waaaay more with just a plastic spoon.
THIS is literally the most unique game ive seen in years, the potential here is limitless, it would honestly, given proper funding, compete with skyrim or fallout. The premise is excellent and leaves so much room for magical encounters, hundreds of unique creatures or demons or kings and crusaders who are at odds with the witch, an then theres room to introduce other playable mythological entities like howls magic castle style. God the potential here is insane
You should check the game's tags, there is no combat in the game or enemies or whatever you thought. It's just a single player sandbox building adventure with fetch quests.
@@DeadPool-pb2fi river kitten=little puppy. It's so spot on. The first thing the bones reminded me of when she helped the king of the cats get rid of the blight.
Thanks for the showcase. I've tried the demo and I agree with you completely. It's definitely not ready for prime time, but it's got some ideas to develop.
Like the vibe. There's not a lot out there flavored with Slavic paganism. Part of why I liked Witcher 3 was that they used some of the demon names, and runes had names of some of the deities. Too early to tell exactly what kind of game this'll be
aww man. missed the demo. and heck yeah, I love playing hedge witches in like every open world survival game. Game itself does seem rough. just fetch quests? how much are spells rituals? and how much is everything preset? feels like progression and gameplay is going to be really on rails.
This game really get me interest. The environment also looks cozy and half terrifying. I don't think it's a survival game, more like an interactive visual novel. I don't know what happened with the demo, I saw the post about it but I can't see the download, is it on another page?
Doing some cool games lately. I'm not big on the top down games but you did THE LONG DARK once. Don't you think its time for an update?? Lots of new shit to check out my guy.
Fun fact about Baba Yaga: she was a neutral character. But when Christianity became the main religionшт Kievan Rus' - Baba Yaga became just an evil witch ;-)
C'mon, Splat, we do not chant "Hut". We chant: "Hut, hut" and then demand from hut (izbushka) on chicken legs, also. If you say hut just one time it wouldn't work!

Doom! Despair! And agony on me!
Deep, dark depression, excessive misery!
All good dude, still one to look forward to. Definitely has an interesting hook.
Well I’m going to watch the video anyway so it’s not really a loss 🤷🏻♂️

Thank you for this explanation, what books of slavic folklore do you recommend?
"A box inside a box." Must have been an Amazon delivery.

Seriously! How cool would that be?
Oh-my-god(s) YES!!!
Ooh

This is an outstanding idea.
My dude, your career as an indie-game developer has just been born. Now get your butt over to Kickstarter!
Maybe even a.... Mortal Engine? 😏
Wow, that wood filling in feature so you don't need a bunch of angle shapes is amazing, also the trees getting knocked down by the hut was a nice touch
The art style is incredible, the consistency of it is so well thought out. The movement is smooth enough to not feel clunky.
But perhaps a little clucky.
I see Baba-Yaga, I click like. Don't care. Not my normal genre, but I will keep it in mind for later. I wanna see how they do the folklore.
This is a really cool idea, and I like the way they have implemented it. Yeah, it's a little rough around the edges, but I love this.

Kind of disappointed he didn't go with the classic "face" on the chicken hut with two windows on either side of a door..
But the classic witch hut of Baba Yaga is described as a hut with no doors and no windows.
Reká means river in most Slavic languages. Might be a hint to why the Bába Yagá calls her River Kitten.
Obviously...
Everybody gansta til the house starts walking...

Mobile Chicken Gundam.
Reka is word for river in lot of Balcan countries like Serbian, Croatian an so on.
Interesting, we have "řeka" in Czech republic (too).
Thats because we are Slavic brothers 😁
So, same as in Russian. And Belarus, I believe.
and there is "rzeka" in Polish
Loving the vibe of this one. I'll definitely keep an eye out for it once it's a little more polished
Ancient magic is about foraging, growing plants and fetching stuff, a lot of it is what inspired alchemy and later medicine making. :)

Is Tasha supposed to be the Baba Yaga of D&D? With spells like Hideous Laughter, I thought more Wicked Witch. Unless something changed circa 5e.

Disappointing that the player character doesn’t wave her hand when she is placing objects down. Would be cool to have that visual with the building.
there is an incredible book with a similar premise: the dungeon that walks like a man
I never understood the John Wick analogue to an old witch.
Probably a fuck up. Babayaga sounds similar to “babaka” would apparently have meant “the boogieman” which certainly fits more.
Definetly has potential. But need to know more about gameplay first. Visuals are quite good.
