fyi *Kurt's arrest for domestic violence* had just been leaked and his PR team made them play the happy family to clean his image for the imminent release of In Utero. Kurt was scared of being in front of the press since he thought they were going to ask him about Courtney's cuts and how he choked her. Courtney wasn't attending the awards because she was supposed to record her album that week, and yet she postponed and played the happy wife for his sake.
PS. Courtney refused to cooperate with authorities for months and the case was finally dismissed. Had Courtney declared everything that was written by the policemen who showed up at the Cobain residence was true, Kurt would have spent some time in jail.
The case did not take months to close. More like days
