So heinous and cruel of the media to let her make a fool of herself, knowing she was a struggling addict, instead of turning her away from the stage. No excuse for Courtney’s behavior, but the media was definitely a massive enabler of her usage.
I'm ambivilent about it. I agree that they definitely put her up as a circus clown in this scenario, but she's also capitalized on the attention the media has given her. I'd even go so far to say this stunt may have been planned. Her toppling over in her seat seemed a little too "Look at me I'M HIGH. GET IT. GET IT??!!?" I think it's an overstatement to say the media enabled her substance abuse; it's not their job to police anyone's behavior.

She’s a perma-addict. Addicts with sociopathic tendencies are the hardest to treat. They don’t really care at the end of the day. They never truly feel remorse or guilt over how their addiction effects others. The pleasure seeking and impulsivity doesn’t help either.
Btw sociopaths aren’t necessarily evil.. they just don’t have a guilt mechanism, which often leads to anti-social behavior and destructive coping mechanisms.

Madonna handled that well...she looked extremely uncomfortable here but was able to zing Courtney right back. MTV awards in the 90's were the best. They suck now.
Honestly, I find the way they are talking about Courtney cruel, years after the fact. The whole thing was incredibly exploitative. So typical of Hollywood to exploit someone else's struggles.
Side note - Madonna handled this so gracefully. She has always been so put together despite the extreme criticism she has faced in every era of her career.

Also, I wonder if people know Madonna & CL’s history? Aside from all the late 90’s get together and dinner parties where Francis Bean & Lourdes grew up watching their mother’s cat fight in front of Donatella. Madonna tried to sign Hole, I think after “Doll Parts”. Courtney didn’t like the offer, and turned her down. That’s why her song has “I’m not selling cheap.” And turns out, I think they both were better off for it. Madonna apparently ripped some people off, Michele Branch anyone. But then Hole kind of fizzled after “Celebrity Skin”, so, what can you do?
Also, in 1998, Rollong Stone did an epic issue of women in rock, where the cover had Tina Turner (First lady of Rock n roll), Madonna (Then Queen of Rock/Pop), and Courtney Love (supposedly representing the future. Which turned out to be quite off the mark.). So Madonna was having CL shoved down her throat quite a bit. And in the industry, they were both constantly brushing against the same people in the mid 90’s. Madonna was on top and trying to keep her hold on it (which she did brilliantly), but Courtney just kind of rode that grunge/nirvana/90’s trashy glam wave right up to about 99.
I’m from Atlanta, and as much as it is now the epi-center of hip hop now, in the 90’s, it was kind of like the east coast Seattle. The whole REM/B-52’s from Athens, then you had LA Reid bringing TLC, Toni Braxton, etc. Atlanta was a music Mecca in the 90’s, and in 1993/94, Courtney Love & Hole were in town, working with that whole Athens crowd (Kurt even came to Atlanta to hang out one weekend. It was a smaller city then, people knew.). And Madonna was on town working with Dallas Austin & LA Reid on “Bedtime Stories”. I think Madonna got tired of seeing CL, and knew when to say when, and let her make a fool of herself.
