They should have used the name like "John Carter of Mars" for marketing, and it could have been at least a movie trilogy, or a tv-series like "Game of Thrones". There is plenty of Martian novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs that just need to adopt for films. I read all those novels many years ago.
I did too it time for it to make a comeback to the movie theaters and get a new cast of characters from literature modern or old it doesn't matter to stand together
I was a fan of these for what they were and there’s a few more to add to the list. Hell ‘90’s, 2000’s, and 2010’s are littered with movies that had the potential to make 2-3 movies after the first one but whatever happened at box office and critical reception weren’t on their side. Then again we do have the sequels that are to little to late, that can’t recapture the original magic of the first movie.
Constantine the movie was pretty bad. Constantine the TV series was amazing. Sadly he only got one season. I couldn’t stand legends of tomorrow. Even the Constantine character/actor in that wasn’t enough to let me watch more than one episode, but I’m so glad he got a chance to keep playing the character a while longer.
1. Respect the source material. 2. Don't try to make a franchise 3. Just because they have a British accent doesn't mean they can act. 4. Have a director with more than a few music videos to their credit before handing over a hundred million dollars for a film. 5. Trust the intelligence of the audience to recognize junk when they see it. 6. Always story first, effect second. I would say more, but the movie industry won't change unless they get rid of a lot of stupid people.
The Lone Ranger outtakes on the DVD are way better than the movie itself. Johnny Depp mugging his in chadacter voice trying to coax the horse hes in camera with to stay in frame is priceless.
Both Lone Ranger movies flopped for many reasons, but for me, what killed both was that the Lone Ranger was not an epic hero; he was just more competent than the groups of bad guys who threatened average people. As it says in the Lone Rangers code - "That all things change but the truth, and that truth alone, lives on forever." That would have been a good theme.
Disney mishandled the release of John Carter- very little pre publicity and what there was was low key. The film itself was compromised because the original story line was altered. The original book "A Princess of Mars" had easily enough narrative for a 2hour film but as always some "brain" thought they knew better than the original author and altered the story. The actual appearances of the green/red martians was good and a fit with the novels. Disney gave up the film rights a few years ago. Let's hope that some ambitious studio picks up the challenge and does a movie or TV series which finally acknowledges Edgar Rice Burroughs skill as a story teller Kaor! (as they say on Barsoom)

What you failed to mention is that Shadowhunters started off with promise, but quickly lost viewers and was cancelled in its third season, mostly because the show lost its focus on the story it was supposed to be telling.
I remember when the producers of Mortal Instruments announced the tv version they said 'tv offers us so much more scope for telling the story!'. And I thought why didn't you go down that route in the first place then?
I thought that 13th Warrior was great. Epic hero story told from a close side character perspective. Had great interactions throughout like Banderas' character learning the Viking language, the Viking duel where the 'good' guy feinted getting pounded for most of it, the Viking death song, etc. Oh well, if they made the 14th Warrior they would have messed it up.
I loved the mortal instruments it's what made me fall head over heels for Jamie Campbell bower I also loved the league of extraordinary gentlemen . I am a fan of Stuart Townsend and loved him as Dorian . I used to own both of these movies 🍿 lol 😂❤
The failure of those several dark universe related franchises really upsets me I would have really enjoyed them and to be honest even with all it's flaws I enjoyed that mummy movie with tom cruise Especially knowing that they are gonna be movies in that universe to follow! I loved LXG and John Carter. Both were wonderful sci Fi romps. Nothing world shattering but enjoyable movies. LXG didn’t go as weird and dark as the source material, but they were trying for a wider audience appeal & I liked the interpretation of the characters. Best lines of that movie: “They say Africa will never let me die.” “But you’re not in Africa now.” “…no.” John Carter was closer to the source material, I think. I never read the stories. Loved the giant apes, the insectoid Martians, and the skyships. Sad that they didn’t do better $$$.

I wonder if studio changes their approach instead of abandoning these series midway the way they did, it may get better? I mean, even those that made it also vary in result in each sequels, so there's the possibility the next one will hit, right? But honestly sometimes turning these trilogies or series into a TV series might be better. You don't always find the right mix that alows the movie to capture all the essential part of a book, and therefore satisfy the fresh audience and at least appease the fans of original series the way Dune or Jackson's TLOTR did. TV series if done well can do more justice for the work, better than movie could, especially with how good CG is used in these nowadays.

John Carter was a ton of fun. But it was vastly different than the books. But I recommend to anybody, if you can separate the 2, watch the movie.
