    Man am I glad I found this video. I have some excess movement on my passage side of a pocket door and I wasnt sure how to dress it up. This is a great idea

    Most don't take in account if you ever need to remove or adjust the door. On the inside of the room, the bathroom side, you should make the head jamb trim piece removable. That means leaving ends square and screwing it in place for future adjustment/removal. You won't be nailing bottom edge of casing either. You can fill screw holes and paint or use screw caps to cover screw heads. Like the pocket detail when door is closed. I cut the tabs of the guides off that stick into the door opening, looks a bit neater and you don't hit them when vacuuming.

    Thank you Ken. I hid the plastic door guides by carving out the back side of 2 pcs of ripped 1 x 3 on the pocket side of the opening. Used 2 screws in the guides (to prevent guide movement) then hid the guides behind the trim.

    Question: Are the plastic bumpers generally necessary? We recently had a contractor install several pockets doors when we finished our basement and feel like the plastic bumpers and steel screws that lie on top of a dark wood floor give a strange look.

    • @mnspeed1932
      @mnspeed1932  6 років тому

      Yes, I bought the unfinished pine door slabs from Lowe's, painted on 3 coats of stain and 2 coats of satin clear. I installed them with Johnson Hardware - ordered what I needed, online, as my contractor used Johnson Hardware kits to install the pocket door framing. Just a note to get your back door rubber stop the right thickness, so the door is level with the trim, when it's all the way open.

      I see you didn’t need a transition on the floor due to the flooring running into both rooms. I’m replacing a existing door with a pocket door. Can I use a door jam as the transitioning the floor so that it matches the door jam I am installing? And how can I find that door hardware? Can you post a link ?

      The upper inside trim on the back side. He thought I should have just squared it off and used small screws so I could just unscrew it if I wanted to take the door off for any reason. I didn't waste my time doing that. I'll just take a small screw driver and work the trim off if I want to do that.

      The instructions that come with the Johnson pocket doors say to do it how he did. That way you can center it between the trim and get a even reveal.

    • @choimdachoim9491
      @choimdachoim9491 3 роки тому

      You need to be able to adjust the guides up or down to fine-tune their performance against the door. I don't understand why they make protruding guides either.

    • @mnspeed1932
      @mnspeed1932  4 роки тому

      If you have a table saw, you can rip the 1-1/2" down to 1-3/8's. Otherwise check another store that sells lumber for 1-3/8's.

    • @curtisbme
      @curtisbme 3 роки тому

      Yeah, it is very strange that they sell all the pocket door stuff but not a size of pre-cut wood that fits. And since HD and other lumber places will only do cross cut, you have to have a table saw. I used 5/8" drywall so even the larger peice has to be cut down for me as the store only has 4 9/16" for 2x4+ 1/2" drywall.

  • @linotrillo9297
    @linotrillo9297 6 років тому

    Poor installation, you did not observed the handle being sunk into the trim. The top nailer on the inside should NOT be nailed in the event that you need to remove the door from the track. Sorry but this is not how is done.

    • @mnspeed1932
      @mnspeed1932  6 років тому +11

      Thanks for your response. I think your idea of just screwing in the backside of your trim, so you can easily take it off to remove the door is a good idea. I've been on my addition project for 5 years and at this point, I simply want to get it done and decided just to nail it.
      If you listen to my video, I point out that there's a couple different ways to leave the door jam - with no trim, as you prefer, or a recess, as I prefer. That's what makes us all unique, in a good way. God Bless!

    • @mnspeed1932
      @mnspeed1932  5 років тому

      For the door handles - the space for them was meticulously cut into the door - drilling and using a drill metal burr bit - with only a 1/16 inch to spare and then glued the handles into place.
