Really great channel - not just the same old same old regurgitations you find on other channels - Very impressive & interesting - Bravo !!
Your approach to these projects is amazing, I really liked the layer breakdown. As for suggestions, on the IT side how about backup status on the panel or an alert that there is one of the annoying Windows Updates that tend to reboot the PC at 3 AM even if you disable the feature. On the real world part since the sensor for movement is already in place how about a an alert (could be voiced) that you've been sitting for too long and should to a stretch.

Been sitting too long is a great idea too! I'm going to build a home assistant panel to cover this also, it'd be really interesting to map my movements (can also pull other biometrics from my health tracker watch, so could be cool to cross-correlate!!).

Interesting thoughts and an introduction to some useful automation software. There’s no limit to what you can do with the right sensors and identified needs.

Been using Home Assistant (obviously) and Hass Agent for a few years and I never knew about WMI query and what i've been missing. Thanks very much, mmwave is also something I've wanted to try and you've just given me more reasons to jump in. The touchscreen is great and I'd love a deep dive into how you created that interface. Keep these fab video coming!

Wow... 🤯 Having just started out with *Home Assistant* myself, I hadn't imagined such a dashboard could look so visually appealing! ✨ The default style -of my current dashboard in the HA mobile app- looks nowhere near that kind of fancy / sci-fi. 🤭

I've been planning a small, stand-alone control panel _(running on Raspberry Pico 2040 and/or ESP micro-controllers)_ for my home office. Now I feel I need to step up my game. 😜

The way I switch off my office equipment is by scanning an NCF tag when I'm done. HomeAssistant then switches off all peripherals and lights and tells HASS to switch off the computer. It remains reading in a loop the Current of the PC outlet and when it drops below a threshold it then switches off the power (so when power is restored the PC will start automatically).

I love the idea of a self-build screen for a PC case and using a touch-screen so you can interact with it is a great idea!
The custom insert is a really nice touch but I'm wondering if it would be better to make that part of the screen graphics?
Imagine someone rings your doorbell camera and the image pops up on the case screen with controls to talk to them (or not :)), avoiding disturbing your work
Hey Chris - yes you might be right, you'll see I've cunningly designed it to 'hedge' my bets (ie I can take out the insert in seconds if I fancy!).
That said, I did briefly mull the options like CCTV as you suggested - however I think there's better places for it to alert. One of the nice approaches with this approach is how agnostic I can be - so I can have my PC popping up an alert in the bottom right when the CCTV detects someone at the front door (much more likely to spot this when playing games than the case!). I'm also plotting a desk screen module that will sit in front of me and allow alerts like this to pop up too....! Ultimately, having adaptable, modular touch screens in all the places I might find useful creates super flexibility to adapt to every need!
@@handsonkatie You're absolutely right, and I'm not sure my example was the best one either :)
I could imagine you might decide to add other screens with more information and have it cycle between them or simply add extra sensors and need to modify the insert. It does add a nice touch though that looks better than just static flat images.
I'd be interested to know what you used to create and update the cool looking dashboard graphics - maybe that's another video in itself :)
Ooh yes, I'll need to do one on that too - lots of HA charting and a bit of custom layouts! 😊

Oh gosh this brings together all the nonsense I'm into and can totally see me falling down a rabbit-hole for additional IOT sensors I can stick in my rebuild. I miss the random control panels you could shove into the 3.5in drive bays.
P.s, there's clearly a lot of effort into descriptions and whatnot for the video - please also include chapters :D

Great video! I just discovered your channel and subbed. I was hoping you would cover how you made the graphics for the touchscreen dashboard. Was it a windows based app, or Python with PyGame perhaps?

Thanks! It was actually all in home assistant! It's effectively just a full screen browser window showing a custom dashboard I made in HA! I'll see if I can cover a bit more detail in the full project video in future!
I never could understand why folks need to light their monitor with a lightbulb. It IS a lightbulb!
BTW I really like your approach to automation, I think you would get a lot of value from image recognition.
One can even use old PoS webcams for this.

I really appreciate the research made and mindset you have. Excellent solution, well thought out.
However, the video would be more interesting/entertaining if we followed your design process instead of starting with the result and then explaining why it is what it is. Would love to see the design of the layer on top of the screen. Was the first prototype too small, big etc. Did you try other screens or layouts.
Considering the very high production quality, there is really potential to make this channel take off. (My own videos are just short demos, which are easy to make but will never get many views.) Demos should probably be 30 second shorts, whereas “I am building it” can easily take 20 minutes. Anyway, I am happy that I subscribed and really hope that this channel gets the success it deserves. Great project! Thanks.
Great comment - it's a tricky line as I'm certain people would get bored of me rambling for an hour, but some people are total experts and some are total beginners! Likewise some folk like to jump to the end result and others like to see the process - I'm still trying to work out the right balance. I'm half thinking I could run a more detailed series for people wanting to see the build process too. I'll try to keen improving! For what it's worth, this was actually a pretty smooth project - kinda worked first time without any major bugs or screw ups on my part (which is rare!)

How did you make the sleek visualization for the monitor?
I just made it in home assistant! Few gart components (eg apex charts) and some web coding! I might do a tutorial in future if helpful!

I'd go with a Bambu Printer - look at the A1 or A1 Mini - very cost effective, super reliable and very easy to use!
Hi Katie, I've looked at HASS Agent a few month ago but I didn't install it because I got the reflex of checking maintainability rate and for this one its latest release is quite old 2022 (in IT world sense) ... maybe I will revise my idea ... what's your opinion ?
Hey - great point, I actually didn't realise this - so I guess part one of your question is HASS Agent has obviously been rock solid for me for the last two years as I haven't noticed!! The software for the actual graphs and graphics on the touchscreen was not mentioned. What is it?
It was all just home assistant! I used Apexcharts for the graphs and made the graphics myself. I could do a more detailed tutorial at some point if helpful!
