    I Am So Grateful To You for the knowledge you have given me about treating African Violets for the many dreaded pests. I have over 50 African Violets plus many that I have propagated. I am very proud of my violet family even though everyone I know thinks I have way too many. It's really nice to find out that someone else feels the way I do about these fantastic plants. These plants deserve to be loved and appreciated by a compassionate person who considers them family, No Matter How Many the person has. Thank you again for the lesson, I am so glad I ran across your video. 😊

    Wow! Great stuff! Today I went to a good nursery and they recommended using a systemic over Neem Oil. I held off getting anything as I was hoping to see what you use. I've been regularly examining my plants with a strong magnifying glass. I haven't seen anything crawling around. Don't want to either! Yesterday I caved and got another Optimara violet for 1.00 It's a nice one. (Degas) These plants really are addicting! I just lost my mom recently. She was a master gardener. Anyhow she found AV's to be problematic and never really tried to figure them out. She could grow ANYTHING. These violets have been cathartic for me. It's very relaxing working with them and I kind of lose myself in their care. Thank you for sharing your knowledge here on You Tube. You have helped me a TON. My parents would both be smiling if they knew I finally took up an affordable hobby...unlike horses.... lol.

    Great video Rick . For some reason I have never seen this one , but for the last 2 years I have been dealing with thrips in my garden and it sucks ! Can't seem to get rid of them , tried many different beneficial insects , but still the thrips are thriving . Roses and day lilies are their favorites .

      .....yes you are 100% correct... Thrips are bad this time of year, and they seek out the blooms and new growths...Neem oil is great for keeping them off the vegetation, as are other products, ......Neem doesnt hurt the foilage, and usually it doesnt effect blooms.....best thing about Neem is it wont kill of pollinators like bee's......Most other pesticides will kill bees also.....I have used Neem oil in my garden for years....

    SO this was the best video for me to find. THANK YOU. I just started watching a your channel last week for your orchid content, which I am still working thru.
    I have one AF given to me by a friend a few years ago. It had not been doing quite as well this spring, I thought it was recovering from an over dry week in mid January. Nope, your description of outer leaf die back, odd little spots on the leaves, to pollen spill fit all of my observations. I finally picked it up and really looked at the leaf with my super nearsighted eyesight. Little long white crawly things on the leaves, just hanging out like they owned the place. Good grief. I went out and got some Neem Oil and a magnifier today. Will be looking for the Bayer product tomorrow. Have some blue thrip paper coming in mail too. My poor AF has lost a lot of it's leaves, and so now has a long neck and is in a pot that's way to big for it. Should I nurse it along and start to treat it for thrips before trying to trim the root and repotting it? How long would you recommend waiting, 3 treatments? Will also be treating all the plants close to it. Luckily it's a small collection, but it varied and it's mine : ). Hoping for the best.

    Thanks so much for doing this video, Rick! It's so helpful. Ironically, this morning I saw the first thrip in my new but growing AV collection. • @rickl.orchids
      @rickl.orchids  7 років тому +3

      Paula.....time of year, and where the violets come from,......have a big impact on thrips.........best thing is assume every violet you see is infested.....and treat when you add any to your collection.....and treat regular for preventative........Neem will work as well...

    • @patny8706
      @patny8706 7 років тому +2

      Yes, I will do this from now on every time I receive a new plant. I did the neem today and also just ordered the Bayer. Question: Do I really have to remove the buds before I spray? I know the blooms should be taken off, but what about buds that are just forming but haven't opened?

    • @rickl.orchids
      @rickl.orchids  7 років тому +2

      .,Pat, great question...... research will tell you to remove the blossoms due to they can contain larva, etc...also your removing pollen sacs that are a food source.......so it helps the cause........but using a systemic, the plants should be protected........will removing them help,.... yes, I believe it does.....it also lessons the chance of re-infesting while trying to treat, and as well as it helps with eradicating them......"BUT"....lol...here's what i do..........kind of a little of both.......I remove bloom stems, ...of those that are open or starting to open.....or close to opening......if some are really buried, I dont dig them out.......if some are barely starting to form I leave them as well.....always use some common sense.....treat as directed, and all 3 times.........you'll be fine......they will bloom back even faster than before, once the pest are gone.....mine will be covered in blooms in a few weeks .....you watch...
      ........the more blooms you pull....the more they bloom back....

    • @patny8706
      @patny8706 7 років тому +2

      Rick, thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I did. Well, I didn't have any blooms yet because my collection is still so new, but I do have some small buds on a few of the plants. I decided to keep them, though I did spray the buds very well. Soaked them, actually. So, I'm hopeful.
      Also, not 100% sure what I saw yesterday was a thrips. But it was crawling around on a leaf, and didn't fly away like gnats do when I picked up the pot. At least I have a little peace of mind now. And, in addition, the neem spray seemed to clean the leaves nicely and give them a little sheen. So the plants actually looks better now. I'm still going to do the Bayer treatment later on. Thanks again for all your help and information!

    • @rickl.orchids
      @rickl.orchids  7 років тому +1

      that is great feedback.....if you mix Neem correctly and apply it correctly......its does exactly that.....remember with young violets, if you keep the blooms off them the energy goes to growing big, I de-budded several of mine when I started growing them again....and they are large violets now....and they bloom quickly after....

    This was really great and informative. I was worried about spraying the leaves and everything since they like to stay dry, but you demonstrated that is exactly what you have to do. So that’s reassuring. I have found a bunch of thrips yesterday and snagged them with a q-tip and am waiting for mine to dry out, another helpful tip and have the insecticide already mixed and ready to go. Hopefully they will dry out soon!

    Wow, I rambled too long and threw way too much out there. Haha. Was just excited to see a video of yours about spraying violets. Just know it’s much appreciated. Also looking into getting some Mykos, which I heard you mention before that you use when potting for helping repotted plants get established and healthy root systems. Learning and experimenting a lot because of your videos and every morning I look forward to seeing what you have going on. So keep them coming if you can!! Thanks again. -Dan

      Dan.....love questions and really love enthusiasm for growing.......with some 6000 species of thrips out there....yes there are both types...their growth cycle takes them from soil to flower buds and back down again......Neem is a favorite of mine to use on violets as well as orchids....it has some contact kill properties, mainly due to being a oil, and smothering......it also has a very good systemic property.....For preventative, or to control plants with a pest issue...it works great.....you should be fine.....repeat 1x week for 3 treatments....this is first time using Bayer on violets, I did some testing on a few 1st.....I recommend everyone do the same...the Neem worked great....i just want to try this.......it works well on everything else I tried it on.....thanks for the kind comments

    You are the man!! Thank you for the info and video. Not many videos on spraying violets, and if so they’re not very helpful. Just disbudded and sprayed all my plants with neem the other day after noticing a couple plants with minor thrips issues(I’m hoping at least.. have only seen a few of them on flower blooms and spilled pollen. I read that there were two different types of thrips, flower and soil thrips..Do you agree? Or do they just move from soil to flower during different stages of their life cycle?) but like you said.. the neem is more preventative, not reactionary. So this video is helpful because I wasn’t sure if using something like the Bayer was even an option, or if the leaves would pay a major price for using something like that. Have only been growing violets for about a year, so I’m still learning. It’s all trial and error and like you, I enjoy the slight challenge. but now I know to spray all new plants with neem and keep a routine going. Definitely will get the bayer as well. Really wish there was some type of soil additive/granuals that you could mix into potting mixes to act as a systemic pest preventative. Would make life a lot easier...

    • @danharkins388
      @danharkins388 7 років тому +1

      CosmoBee7 thanks for the info!! Yeah I’ve been doing some research as well. I noticed that Bayer makes the same insecticide as Rick used in the video in a granular form as well. Appears to have the same properties and components as the spray, and about half the price as well

    I have a problem in the Summer where my house gets real hot and the center of the plant has developed small, small leaves. Someone told me that the plants was under "stress" from the heat ? On a semi-mini AV it looked like broccoli.
    In the Fall some of them started growing normal, but I had multiple sucker heads.
    Some AVs still have stayed bunched up small leaves in the center of the plant (like what you would call "mouse ears" when you try to root a leaf and the babies start).

    • @rickl.orchids
      @rickl.orchids  6 років тому

      …..I hope I'm mistaken,,.....but.it sounds like you have broad mites......they are to small to see with the eye, you need a strong glass to see them...…..they attack the very new growth on plants.....the new growth on violets is in the center or crown......you will see bunched up tiny growths, and the plant will have stalled growth...…..as the new shoots come out they feed on them, it cause the new shoots to continually bunch up.....and never reach full size...…..I have never been able to get rid of them once they get established...….pull good leaves, sanitize them and destroy the rest of the plants....google.." broad mites on violets".....see if that's what you have...…..Outside plants, other house plants.....or adding violets that were infected with out knowing is how they get started...…...fingers crossed.....

    •  6 років тому

      @@rickl.orchids ......Thanks for replying. I hope you and your wife are doing well.
      I think your are right about the mites. I was worried about having "cyclamen mites".
      It's funny, I bought a semi-mini call KY Berry Bush by mail 2 yrs. ago in the Spring. I sent a picture to an online AV club who didn't know what it was. It looked like broccoli. One woman said that extreme conditions will cause the pant to be "stressed" and will cause the plant to send out suckers to divide itself (which is what it looked like). So I thought it was from the heat.
      The apartment I live in is screwed up !!! It's new construction, but they "cheapened" out building it and I think they crossed some of the electrical wiring. My electric bills were so high in the Summer from the A/C that I couldn't run it as cool as I wanted (I'm on a fixed income and no choice of moving). i think I'm paying for part of my downstairs neighbors electricity. (My sister thinks just the A/C wiring was crossed.) The landlord won't do anything about it and the elec. company doesn't care.
      But that one plant did develop multiple heads, but the leaves (after awhile ) went back to normal ? I believe I have one other plant that went from small, bunched up leaves,........and they started growing normal again ?
      I can't remember if I used my natural Castile soap suds rinse on those. (if I did, I would do it once a week for 3-4 weeks)
      I will take some leaves and TRY rooting them (still having problems).
      I read a "blurb" from the AVSA about taking leaves from buggy plants.....won't it just spread the bugs. They said that the mites only can feed on the soft, tender, new growth. The older, outer leaves are too tough for them to attack ?
      So maybe dipping them in my Castile soap to wash them off for now ?

      Primrose.....hope that is correct.....your very nice, always a kind word.....I also use Neem....its organic, and works great as well........very easy to use........mix it with warm water, add a few drops of soap, and test it on a few plants first.......thats how I mix it, and never have had any issues.......the soap will help it mix with the water, since its an oil, and will keep it from clumping up on leaves or leaving a residue.....its a great preventative to use......

    Hello there. I would like to ask about a pest which is festering on Saintpaulia´s flowers, later also leaves. They are small grey caterpillars, they also create small gosammer with their excrements in the flowers in early stages, later they move to leaves and make holes in them. In last time, our supplier sends us such infested Saintpaulias to our market place. I never can select all plants with this pest, so I have to use systemic insecticide to protect all those who are still looking ok. Now I am trying to google this specific species of the insect and am not successful. Please could you give me a hint? Just want to now what it is. Never seen it before, never learned about it. I think it can be problem for customers. Thank you.

    Rick I have learned a lot of maintenance ideas on ur videos I’ve had one or 2 violets over the yrs no problems but now I have quite a few. U talk about preventive viruses systemic. I’ve been using need oil. I understand to treat 3 times at 2 was apart. But after that how long do I wait till the next spraying? Or is their a time frame. Will the Bayer b better in systemic? Just looking for something that gets rid of and keeps bugs away. Seems like I’m always fighting a bug. Thanks for ur info. Myrna

      ......great question Myrna......Bayer systemic work well for me......using systemic is more like people using antibiotics ......works from the inside....gets into the tissue and kills the pest....add Bayer to your water once every few months......and it will help alot.....good airflow, using caution with new plants and be aware ......is the best way to keep pest free.

      Sherry it has worked very well......I noticed thrips on several violets that I had out in the house, not in my violet room, I think they came in on house plants from outside......very common...I reapplied it to those again....and it seemed to stop it very fast......better than I had luck in the past....I sprayed them, but also added it to my water a few times.....those plants are still separate, but are looking clean, waiting for blooms to open and recheck.......i think its even more important to have several sprays that you feel safe using......and rotate them every so often....

    Hi Rick, is this still the chemical insecticide that you recommend? I have over 30 different violets now and probably going on 50 plants (including all my baby clones) and combined with other houseplants, I feel like I need to start spraying with something as a preventative but want to ensure whatever I use won't harm my violets. I have an old bottle of Orthenex (label is acephate/triforine/fenbutatin-oxide) insecticide for outdoors but not sure of it's age or safety so I've decided to not risk my plants by spraying them with it. I plan to buy a bottle of the Bayer complete as you suggest in the video and mix it as you directed and spray this weekend if you still recommend it. Thank you sir!

      Rick L. Orchids I am so thankful to come across this video, in particular, of yours. All of your videos are very informative and educational. I bought the Bayer Complete at Lowe’s. The Home Depot (at least in Atlanta) doesn’t carry it. I really like that is has no toxic fumes (no smell at all really) and that is milky in color. It’s not sticky nor did I find that it left any visible residue at all. I treated all my violets, including my babies with faith that nothing will suffer any negative effects from it. I also treated ALL of my houseplants to include my dracaena, fiddle leaf figs, jade, croatan, philodendron, kalanchoe, snake plant, ZZ plant and umbrella tree. Thanks again for this recommendation. This insecticide is not expensive and is a big bottle that will last a long time. I plan to get on the 3 month spray cycle as well. Happy Planting !!!

    • @rickl.orchids
      @rickl.orchids  6 років тому +1

      ...thrips are tough to get rid of.....understanding their life cycle is key to completely eradicating them.....the adults lay eggs in the tint bloom buds as they start to grow......the larva will hatch and then emerge from the bloom buds as they open and feed on the pollen sacs.....mostly protein.....you will see dumped or spilled pollen on the petals under the sacs......larva are visible with the eye......a puff or two of air on the bloom ..... will cause them to move around...tiny tan narrow little larva....Removing the bloom buds slows their reproductive cycle, and removes most of the food source.....hate to do it but almost impossible to get rid of them with blooms intact.....treating along with removal of blooms makes it easier....lots of air flow as well......they are tiny, and need to fly around to spread and breed......a little breeze.. makes it difficult for them to breed and they die off......fingers crossed for you

      Rick's black trays look like they are what is sold as "Boot Trays". They are available in different sizes from several manufacturers and available around many stores (Home Depot, Lowe's, WalMart, Target, Amazon, etc). My local stores here in Colorado carry them during the Winter but they are always available to order online. Another option would be to purchase "Cafeteria Trays" if you are looking for a smaller size than a boot tray. Cafeteria trays are available through Amazon.

      with a small hand spray bottle.......you can spray them over a sink, or bathtub....for easy clean up......I dont notice any smell, and they didn't have any effects from it..BUT...anytime you use chemicals of any type....even organic ones....read labels and follow manufactures advice and directions......also always use good ventilation whether they say too or not....just makes good sense.The main reason I went to the Bayer is I want to use a systemic as a preventative....and this one works well for me.....this is first time on violets, the test ones did fine....I sprayed these in my outside shop..but we will keep close eye for any pests....I love Neem, prefer it....mainly because I have faith in it....Ive used it and it works.....but having several products, to change out, rotate, and use on various plants makes good sense and will help long term in the garden.....
