I found that 2XscaleHQ works great on the 8bit, 16bit, Neo-Geo, and MAME 2D type games. Also important to note that some of those shaders will drop frames or at least they do on my pie; 2XscaleHQ being the exception. Thanks for your videos and tutorials ETA Prime that have come in very handy.

Nice tutorial. I am a fan of scanlines, but wasn't always. It's not always easy to find a scanline effect that looks good. I had to make my own overlay in Retroarch to have it look good to me. Once I saw some good scanline effects, I was sold on it and I do think it makes the old 240p games look their best. They were designed to be seen with scanlines and it smooths the edges just a bit. I do like the look you achieved here. The scanlines are a good size and spacing. I'm not a big fan of curve effects, but it's not too pronounced here. Really looks very nice.

I like this shader too with Arcade titles. I really love my overlays also instead of the black bars on the side. I only have about 250 overlays for almost 3000 titles for arcade, but it's a start and things like donkey Kong look so authentic.

This is a great explanation and demo STILL in 2022! There are quite a bit more shaders available at least for the script I pulled using Xubuntu on an old x86 machine but my favorite was right there out of the box that I use for snes9x - Royale S-Video.

Another great video ETA! Thank you. I've found your videos of much help setting up a PI of my own. I have a question, perhaps you can help. I downloaded the latest Pi software from the PO site and I've began the set up process. I followed this tutorial using the option to make the changes to ALL EMULATORS. Thank you

Interesting... Having worked with MAME for a long time, I know that it automatically compensates for the orientation of the monitor based on the game, i.e. If you play Galaga with scanlines, for example, the lines will appear vertically on the screen. I noticed that there were both horizontal and vertical filters. Is this not the case with the RetroPie emulators?

Your videos are so helpful. Having fun configuring my Pi with Retropie. Quick question, I have seen others vids where they have their games running full screen (I have black bars on both sides of my TV). To achieve that , would I need to mess with the Aspect ratio? There are shader that do it realistically, but the problem is they use way more processing power than the raspberry pi 3 can handle. The Pi 4 could maybe do it, but it’s best to use a PC for that especially if you want to have a screen curvature effect with it.

I use a 21 inch screen and stretch all the screens to fit , I use a combination of GLS barrel shader and MAME cools , it works pretty good for all machines apart from sega 32 x , that looks like arse , but everything else from FBA or MAME to PlayStation looks great, it gives all the machines the same crt barrel effect so they look like they are playing on a tv and adds scan lines to blur the pixels so they look like they should, I can deal with the stretching , it doesn't bother me that they are in the wrong aspect ratio, to me I want my pi arcade machine to be seamless when people have a play on it, to make pacman suddenly change to skinny screen after playing nes or sega is not nice to look at, I know the difference between the aspect ratios for the games, and I know some people find it incredibly important to play these in the correct aspect ratio, myself , I'm all about seamless transitions between the different machines , they should all fill the screen, most people have no idea what these old games are supposed to look like any way.
