I just wanted to take a minute and say thank you to you guys, i built this plane about 3 weeks ago and have since taught myself to fly on it, and now I'm hooked, i have been interested in the hobby for years now but could not bring myself to buy an expensive plane that i was for sure going to wreck, but being able to build a plane that doesn't cost but a few dollars has empowered me to jump in with both feet without the fear of crashing. I'm working on the simple storch now, and i can't wait to fly it. Thanks again guys for all that you do!!
im in the exact same situation... just build me a "the fish" by raptor...jmand need to install the power system hope every thing works out...its my very first plane, have a lil experience in quads tho :)
I've made a couple of scratch built planes and decided to take a short cut this time and I ordered your Old Fogey kit. It arrived very fast and surpassed all expectations for materials and the precision of your cutting. You packaged this kit like it was a Ming vase and it, of course, arrived in perfect condition. With your videos and PDF plans you guys put a tremendous effort into this industry. It is great that you produce kits this quality product at this low price. Thanks!!
Thanks for the inspirational build video and free plans, we had to try it! After about four hours of build time the main sections of the plane are complete and look ok for our first ever RC scratch build. Thank you and God bless
I used 4 of the screws that came with my servos (mounting screws) for the motor to the plywood, and put a small square of sticky-backed velcro (walmart craft isle) 1"x1" to the back of the ESC and on inside of the right sidewall of the power pod, also attached my receiver the same way, only to the inside LEFT wall towards the back (right in front of the servo tray, when pod is mounted in plane) - worked out great!
As a beginner, I recommend ft Fogey. It has 3 channels and has a large wing area, so it can glide slowly and is easy to control, so it is good for beginners. thank you
Very fun plane! I don't have much room at home to fly but it's a blast. I have an over power motor on it currently and it does loops like crazy, awesome build!
That was cool! I just happened onto this video and think it is so great. Good Job. I like the fast pace. If you miss something, go back later. Thanks Flitetest...
A nice old style model, and it goes well...The build method is very good, but it needs some shape changes to be more like the Buzzard bombshell.. It wants to have less chord on the wings and be shallower in the body... What a shame we cant get that cheap and light art board here in the UK... It has given me a lot of ideas...
also be sure to stick the ESC as far forward as you can and the Rx as far back as you can to avoid interference - you will need to add a small washer under the left motor mount screw location (between the plywood and the mount) and 2 to the top screw location to get the Old Fogey to fly correctly! (I stuffed mine several times before I figured out "Thrust Angles") the Motor needs to point slightly DOWN and to the RIGHT so shim the mount accordingly, I dont think Josh mentions that in the videos?
flies really nice, my friend from JC quadcopters build one out of super heavy Australian foam board and it flew amazingly with a 1500 3s, it could fly so slow and i think i could have caught it when he flew by slowly
very nice , im gonna start my build this weekend , it will be perfect for my dad , since he is an old fogey!!! almost got my fowl flyer done noww i gots to build this one! keep up the awesome works guys!
What hot glue and glue gun are you using, that you have sooo much time to make adjustments, before the glue hardens? I have 10 seconds at best with my glue and 10W glue gun... Thank you for your perfect build videos!
ok thank you for the help . its hard learning all this by myself so thank you for taking the time to help ... i ordered a dxi6 radio hope that will work
Three thoughts? Why not put a top on the rear fuselage? Second with the "Dutch Roll" being a problem why not post the correct dihedral. I did encounter the D roll. Interesting fix for the problem, carefully heated the seams with a heat gun and as they loosened let it set in the new position, added glue later and all seems fine. Careful with the heat as it can warp the foam but taking your time with this seems to work very well. I am trying 1 1/2" instead of the initial 2 1/2"
Thanks of providing these great scratch build videos I recently built the delta wing, the video realy helped alot. I already designed two other planes using the swapable fuselage.
I JUST got the new "Flite Test Insider" email newsletter that states: The Old Fogey is coming out as a speed build kit, but I just checked the FT Store, it's still not listed......
I'd say... maybe... depends on how heavy your motor is. The "blue wonder" they recommend pushes about 325 grams on a 2s (with an 8x4.3 according to their webside), so you're in the ballpark, but the motor they recommend is only 24 grams. I had a motor that could generate about that much thrust and put it on the FT Flyer, but the motor was so heavy that it couldn't fly on only 300 grams of thrust. I
I just use the european style foam board. It's 5mm thick, and comes in various sizes. The difference between the US and the EU version is the flexibility and the way the paper is stuck to the foam. The EU version is a lot stiffer and tends to break if you try to fold it. Also the paper cannot be peeled off.
Hey guys nice video and greate build josh! I have a small question. If i build this plane and add an extra servo under the wing for ailerons, will it fly ok?
The comment about the lazy loops that the Old Fogey can fly w/o any control input causes me much confusion. So if I am flying hands-on, will I be constantly fighting the Old Fogey's wayward ways? Am I mostly to let it do its own thing, or should I attempt directed flight? Sorry for the stupid question. My orientation is manned flight. The idea of a Cessna 172 doing its own thing is anathema.
In the UK you can get foam board that is polystyrene and 5mm thick from Hobby Craft. It's also got paper on it so it is very similar to the Dollar Tree stuff. I think they had a 3 for £10 deal, so not as cheap as Dollar Tree unfortunately:(.
The PLANS have been available for free download since Dec 5th 2012 when this video was first put up if thats all you want- I was asking them when a speedbuild kit was going to be available from their store where the plane is already lazer-cut out for you already and all you have to do is fold and glue! (I downloaded the free plans myself and cut out and made one a long time ago dude-
I just built the speed build kit with the power pod. When I run up the RPM’s, the nose wants to dive down. The motor mount was built to spec-it is straight on line with the pod. Why is this happening? Maiden was 30 feet and a nose dive crash.
josh and josh these swapabls are da bomb... cheap, easy to repare, and fly amazing you should do a flying wing with the swapale fusalge.... like a zagi
Hello friends, I am Atonio from Guadalajara, Mexico and I want to know how and where you get this kit OLD fogy here in Mexico we do not have the materials you build impressive aircraft. Greetings and congratulations. Antonio.
Sir I had old fogey also prepared as per instructions weight 500g cg OK will it fly. Please provide contact so that I can share my video if any problem
Please, please, PLEASE can someone give me a definitive answer as to what size / thickness foam board you guys use for your builds please? Thanks, M- UK
Hey Flite Test I noticed in the Review video you landed the Old Fogey on water, were the floats scratch built or did you pull them off another plane? :)
All foam nice...........I built a Black Magic model scratch built from APS UK' SINGLE CHANNEL with elastic powered escapement but it flew away for miles.
yeah its high but learning by yourself i need something easy to operate the turnigy looked like i had to use the comp. to load it.but thanks again sir. are you here in the states ?
Why won't my fogey fly??? It wobbles form side to side and won't climb. Got a emax gt2215/09 1180kv motor 10.4 prop 18amp esc and a 3cell lipo. Only difference is that it's made of 3mm foam board. It is as straight as a arrow and my cg looks good. I moved my lipo to all positions. Nothing works. What other trainer should I be looking at. I like the slow flying planes. Please advise FliteTest
+Ewald Stander Decrease your rudder deflections to about 40% (or maybe even less). The wobbling should stop. You might also consider decreasing the elevator deflections too for a smoother flight.
Wow! Fantastic video my friend. I've never made a RC plane before, but this video really gives me the motivation to do this project. Thanks! :) Oh btw, what is the name of the music that you have playing at the end of the video and where can I find it?
Hi flite test staff , just a question please about a plan down load , I have the old fogey plan downloaded on my mobile, but when I go to print it full size how do I know what size to print the full size plan, with thanks from Tony from Bedfordshire, England,
I don't think they use a laser cutter, they cut the poster board by hand (well, with a knife, actually). It's quite soft stuff so that's no problem. You just need to be accurate, that's all.
Alright, I tried to build this, but it's almost impossible to fly. How much polyhedral is needed? I have to tips sticking up 15 degrees, but I think this is way too much because my plane just rolls and rolls and rolls until it crashes...
One of my first airplanes back in the 80s was an under cambered old timer stick and covering.
It flew great! I think I will download these plans!

Great build and flight! Love the chase plane footage, too. This perhaps the best of the Flite Test series, and that's saying a lot.
Very fun plane! I don't have much room at home to fly but it's a blast. I have an over power motor on it currently and it does loops like crazy, awesome build!

This Old Fogey Got Your Old Fogey To Fly! Had a maiden today and posted the video on my channel.
This is a great plane. flew mine for the first time today. was tail heavy to start with but flew nicely once that was sorted out.
also be sure to stick the ESC as far forward as you can and the Rx as far back as you can to avoid interference - you will need to add a small washer under the left motor mount screw location (between the plywood and the mount) and 2 to the top screw location to get the Old Fogey to fly correctly! The inflight shots with tracking?! REALLY cool! Great job guys!!
It take the blade off the plane or it gets bit !
Safty Mr. Blix !
Keep it going !!
Thanks for taking the time to do these videos!
Love the build video series! It is amazing that a flying machine airframe can be built so cheaply yet fly nice.
flies really nice, my friend from JC quadcopters build one out of super heavy Australian foam board and it flew amazingly with a 1500 3s, it could fly so slow and i think i could have caught it when he flew by slowly

Beautiful job on a classic looking model that is fun to fly.
Kudos Guys!
finally convinced my dad the best plane for christmas is the bixler. cant wait :)
ok thank you for the help . its hard learning all this by myself so thank you for taking the time to help ... i ordered a dxi6 radio hope that will work
Very innovative design, nice slow flyer to relax with.
I would really like it if you guys could do a swappable lazy bee scratch build
A wonderful build and step back into my childhood of flight. Thanks.....

Looks like a fast build and fun flyer. Helpful vid.
it should definitly be called the
FT OAP !!
has such a good ring to it !!

as I am in UK I am using depron lightweight aircraft grade to make one.
old ink pen plastic tubes is great for the servo rods
Keep up the good work guys. Enjoy your channel quite a bit.

You are creative and I follow your channel and all the videos belonging to you Greetings your friend from Iraq
Elmer's glue works pretty well. Just apply a small amount on the paper/foam edges.
I'll be definetly building this plane this summer!
Had a plane similar to this and can only fly that on a perfectly flat field or it rips the tail off
You are a genius. I have always wanted to fly but didn't want to destroy my expensive plane - keep it up!
Can't find them on the Hobby King website either.
could you do a review on this style of wing?
this is not going well,I don't have a friend from Sweden! I do have one from Norway though.. will that work?
open a can of tuna and you'll see
😂 trop bien merci
I clip the square end off of an appropriate size zip tie and push it onto the wire to hold wheels on the landing gear.

Can you design some balsa wood planes not just a foam?
Where can I get the plans. My son would like this plane
Gr8 job Lad's... HOW ABOUT BUILDING A TWIN WITH TWO OF THE POWER POD'S SOMETHING LIKE A DORNIER DO 335 OR A MOSQUITO ?????? keep up the good work ...
Great video and nice build Tim
want to ask what size motor and propeller specifications use?
Would it be too unreasonable to ask if it would be alright to add arialions
The PLANS have been available for free download since Dec 5th 2012 when this video was first put up if thats all you want- I was asking them when a speedbuild kit was going to be available from their store where the plane is already lazer-cut out for you already and all you have to do is fold and glue! Need to build a supersize version of this plane and fpv it
Nice build video! If each stick weighs 8 grams, that translates to is 9/32 oz (.28 oz)
First - 20 seconds after the video was first posted. Thats gotta be a new record.
What foam are you using and what thickness is it for all us NOOBS
Fantastic instructional video. Makes me want to start building right away!
Can I use 5 mm depron foam?
Could you make next a hc 3d swappable
I would really like to see this as a speed build kit in your store..
well done! That is next for the work bench!
I just built the speed build kit with the power pod. When I run up the RPM’s, the nose wants to dive down. The motor mount was built to spec-it is straight on line with the pod. Why is this happening? Maiden was 30 feet and a nose dive crash.
Hi Josh, nice vid - 8 grammes of weight is NOT an ounce though! it's approx 0.1 oz :)
Where can I find plans
Cheers
John
great video you should sell that as a kit josh i would surely buy it !!!
So if you have friend from sweden let him in...
LOL you guys are the best.
josh and josh these swapabls are da bomb... cheap, easy to repare, and fly amazing you should do a flying wing with the swapale fusalge.... like a zagi
How are you achieving the correct thrust angle? Should not be a motor mounted to the firewall pointing right and down?
Hello friends, I am Atonio from Guadalajara, Mexico and I want to know how and where you get this kit OLD fogy here in Mexico we do not have the materials you build impressive aircraft. Greetings and congratulations.

Could u build one smaller and only use 1 motor and put a rudder on it
Hey Flite Test I noticed in the Review video you landed the Old Fogey on water, were the floats scratch built or did you pull them off another plane? :)
Bro I have made a model but the plane spins in the opposite direction of that of the propeller.can you guys help me to find the issue plz
Where did your guys buy the control horn?
All foam nice...........I built a Black Magic model scratch built from APS UK' SINGLE CHANNEL with elastic powered escapement but it flew away for miles.

josh ... can you teach us how to choose a motor for 3d?
B fold = beside fold
A fold = above fold
Is that what it means????????.
It wasn't meant to mean it, but it turned out to be a happy accident.
I don’t know if you know but that’s what josh tells everyone in the more recent build videos
Yes, its : A - above, B - besides
Yes
Wow! Fantastic video my friend. I've never made a RC plane before, but this video really gives me the motivation to do this project. Thanks! :)
Oh btw, what is the name of the music that you have playing at the end of the video and where can I find it?
Hi Josh can u please make a R/C planes for beginner or something like that thanks,
Hi flite test staff , just a question please about a plan down load , I have the old fogey plan downloaded on my mobile, but when I go to print it full size how do I know what size to print the full size plan, with thanks from Tony from Bedfordshire, England,
what program do you use for the laser cutter
Get vid... When I first started watching your vids they were better than good... Now they are better than GREAT!
Hi Buddy, can use a 1000kv motor?
swedish friend included?
I wish.
when maiden mine is swinging left and right
why?
How did you guys not make tiled plans!?!?!?!??!
+Aaron S just printed as poster
if i have a radio that does not have expo how can i get my throws to a 1/2 inch ?
Is this a good starter plane
i have a motor tha can pull 300grams ..will it work for this plane??

How about a micro old fogey?
