Shout out to the King Arthur fandom, originators of fanfiction and AU; where they found a guy mentioned once in a book written 300 years after him, and was extrapolated another 400 years later into a figure of myth and legend for the next eight hundred years with dozens of writers further extrapolating off of the first.
Hot take: Tulok should do more Public Domain characters. They're easy to get footage for, most of them are pretty straightforward, and it doesn't require you to watch over 500 episodes of a series just to know what to get. I'm very happy we have as many DBZ builds as we have, but the Big 3 are gonna take a while. Especially One Piece. Also, that True Strike bit hit hard cuz I'm in Florida & a hurricane is coming so my parents bought bottled water in case things got bad
I like it. Yes, there's still a lot of lore to go through, but I suspect that most of the audience would be at least somewhat familiar with the characters even if they never read a page of the original material.
But the Green Knight didn't ask for his head to be cut off. He arrived and said "I challenge anyone here to hurt me, but know that I will return in a year to do the same to you." Gawain was the one who chose to cut his head off, because then how could the Green Knight return to do it? So it came as a great shock to the court when the Green Knight picked his head up and said, "okay, I'll see you in a year."
While it may seem like it takes a while for the build to come online, Arthur's story starts when he's just a kid named Wart. You can literally play out the hero's journey with this build if you wanted.
Three things I’d change about the build: 1. I’d start with Paladin to get Heavy Armor proficiency 2. Trade out True Strike for Booming Blade or Green Flame Blade (not necessarily in character but it helps with damage output until you get Extra Attack) 3. I’d go with Oath of The Crown. The Channel Divinity options seem more in character and it’s sort of the king swearing an oath to his kingdom. Sure you miss out on Haste but you get Spirit Guardians (which you could flavor as your knights coming to your side to protect you)
Excalibur is notably similar to a legendary Welsh sword called Dyrnwyn, which when drawn by someone worthy would have a flaming blade. Thus, Green Flame Blade could actually work in this context.
@@James-zr8vi Caledfwylch is distinct from Dyrnwyn. However, some of the Welsh legends specifically refer to Caledfywlch blazing, either with something like fire or actual fire (ambiguous how metaphorical it is) and an implied mesmerizing or fear effect, so it does still work well enough.
This was pretty awesome. It’s not easy making a build for something with as much variance in source material as King Arthur, so massive props. That said, most basic fighters would be more efficient in combat than this build. The three different spell lists are nice, but of all the characters in the legends known for their magical abilities, you’re not one of them. Excalibur is cool, but it’s probably just a +1 sword with a scabbard that casts death ward on you.
So basically, Excalibur is a Defender Longsword (a +3 longsword that on your first attack on turn, you can reduce the attack bonus to buff your AC by the amount you reduces the bonus by)
unfortunately D&D doesn't like martials shining too brightly, so the only way to make the mighty warriors of myth and legend in D&D RAW is by investing caster levels or magical equipment. And Tulok likes to build characters around assuming no magical equipment so we get lots of caster levels in warrior-like characters. Basically Tulok's build is more focused on emulating having a magical sword rather than actually having a magical sword.
@@jcama2412 I second that! Most of his builds tend to lean towards a DM/GM that is quite a miser about giving magical items. And Class abilities are the only abilities a DM/GM has (some) difficulty to remove, because it's still "within the rules". I have been playing the game for almost 28 years by now and I did had my fair share of DM's/GM's that were not very keen on giving items away. On the other hand, if this is not the case at the table, then I would focus a bit more on the martial side of the build and relying on the party to have the magic buffs on your "Arthur" character. I totally dig the levels in Bard: especially as a mythic king whoms authority was seldom questioned. (the low Wisdom is also appropriated fot the reasons Tulok stated). With a DM/GM not afraid to give some items and a supportive group of magic users, I would limit the multiclassing in the other caster classes to only a dip of 1 or 2 levels (Bard being the exception). But, hey, the advantage with all the different iterations that exist out there about King Arthur, you can go on many different paths into building him. :)
I need a Merlin build to go with this now. Also so glad to see the show Merlin in this. Also hoping that Danny Phantom gets chosen would love to see him getting played
Here’s my prediction: hexblade 1/ oath of glory X You get a connection with the sword, divinity, and athletic shenanigans Edit: those twists were, unexpected. But joke’s on my for sleeping on what bard could bring to the *table*
My Arthur was Dragonborn paladin of Crown with a Blade Pact Celestial Warlock dip. I made Bedivere a lore Bard, Lancelot a cavelier fighter, galahad a zealot barbarian
This is an absolutely fantastic build, but i think there is a mistake here, Hexblade doesn't let you use Cha with two-handers until Pact of the Blade at level 3. In this build if you want to continue to use Cha with Excalibur, it'll need to be a one-hander (Longsword). At pally2, the Fighting Style should prolly be Dueling ❤
Longswords are versitile though. Hex Warrior just states "the two-handed property" not versitile weapons. Excalibur is often dipicted as a bastard sword in media, which is what the D&D longsword is, so great weapon fighting makes sense if you plan to lean into two-handing it. Both are viable though as dueling gives 1d8+2 for min of 2, while two-handing gives 1d10 with a re-roll of 1s and 2s. Dueling is more consistant, but great weapon will give a bigger boost to crits. So it's all down to how you want to flavour your Arthur.
You can't have King Arthur without his trusted advisor, Merlin. He has so many different possibilities from races, classes, and if he multiclasses. Make something outstanding like always Tulok!
Much as I love the insight jokes about the green knight, it's important to know that ol' Greenie only said that anyone could take a swing at him with the condition that he'd return the favor in a year's time. Meaning that insight check should REALLY be used to make sure Gawain isn't gonna escalate matters against a clearly supernatural warrior due to wanting to prove himself as the youngest member of the King Arthur Crew
A nice build to be sure. I would tweak it here and there depending on the type of campaign that I would have going, but I would always keep some levels in Bard and at least the one-level dip in the Hexblade Warlock. Then focusing more on the martial side (Paladin and/or Fighter). The things I like about your builds, Tulok, is the fact that they are great sources of inspiration! I have used many of your builds in the games I played with only some minor tweaks to better suit the theme of the campaign I'm playing in. You do the groundwork with each of those builds and that groundwork is rock solid. With a solid base, it is a lot easier to start fine tuning here and there. Great job!
fun fact Arthur was actually deck out with magical items. Aside from caliburn/exclibur he also had a lance (Rhongomyniad), a dagger (Carnwennan), a shield (Pridwen) and even the sword Mordred used to kill him, Clarent, was a ceremonial sword originaly owned by Arthur.
3rd Level Spells for Bard that might work for Arthur: Nondetection to keep yourself from being spied on by Morgana. Or Mass Healing Word to keep your allies in the battle just a bit longer.
King Arthur is one of my favorite legendary figures, so thank you for this. Your pun work was on point today but; I would have used the True Strike to remind people that strange women lying in ponds and handing out swords is no basis for a government!
@@donngreitontordilla1456 Because a straight popular vote always works out well for everyone. The electoral college at least allows for the minority to have a say on the national level.
@@OldGreyGryphon Hey, Tulok said it, not me. I happen to live in a country whose straight popular vote just gave us the worst and most corrupt administration. I blame the corrupt plutocracy that's the natural result of unfettered capitalism. Having said that, which minorities are being represented? There are countless ways of dividing up a population, and an electoral college will favor certain minorities much more than others. Really, the fact that the electors don't have to follow the vote of the constituents they represent means that the only minority that gets representation is the small population of electors.
@@donngreitontordilla1456 Truth be told, I had to rewatch the video to even catch that line. Sorry for snapping, it’s becoming a knee jerk reaction these days. Equally sorry about your country’s administration btw. And I’ll admit I should have been more clear earlier. The electoral college allows states with a smaller population ( I.e. Montana, New Mexico) to still have some say on the national level when they would otherwise be swamped by states like New York and California.
Who needs elections when a sword stuck for centuries can do the job better? Just as I search for that one-of-a-kind Tangle the lemur build from Sir Tulok, finding a man who raised a kingdom and can kill single-handedly 960 men in one battle should be a rare encounter. The legend of king Arthur is shrouded in mystery, a man who became a legendary protector of Britain from both human and supernatural menaces, founder of an empire, wilder of Excalibur and it's end on the mythical island of Avalon are just a few parts of the many stories one can find for him and we celebrate in the name of bravery, strength and the journey of an hero we love in our folktales.
Great research on this, Tulok! Loving it. I hope we see more figures of myth and legend. ... and here's a shameless plug for my continuing hope that you hit up some pulp characters like Doc Savage and the Shadow, some day.
Intelligence is good enough to know that there's a difference between African and European swallows but not enough to know what specifically is the difference.
In the oldest stories that I could find he was a famous monster slayer and would travel all throughout England including Scotland. He was the leader of a famous band of warrior's. He could freely travel between our world and the supernatural realm. His mother was a half fae or elf making him 25% elf and 75% human. Excalibur and the sword in the stone are different swords.
More that, it depends on the author. There are at least three distinct sources/traditions for Arthurian Legend (disregarding whether one of them might the original that the others are derivative of), and the one that dominates modern conceptions is both the youngest (Norman/French) and the one with the greatest amount of mutation over time. Whether there even _was_ a kingmaker sword, and whether it was identified with or distinct from Excalibur varied by author about as far back as the concept of a kingmaker sword shows up in the legends.
Still pulling for Eglentine Price (Bednobs and Broomsticks), Winifred Sanderson (Hocus Pocus), Doctor Dolittle, Councilor Troi (Star Trek: tNG), Mary Poppins, the Reverend Doctor Syn (The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh), and Sir Dragonet King Arthur's jester (le Morte d'Arthur/ Idylls of the King).
It’s kinda hilarious seeing a King Arthur build as a multiclass of two caster classes alongside the footage from BBC’s Merlin where is Arthur is within like 10 feet of anything magical and isn’t trying to kill it, Uther decides that the only explanation is mind control. Wild.
That 1 level of Fighter really doesn’t seem to offer much. I would instead take a 3rd level of Warlock for Pact of the Blade, the Improved Pact Weapon invocation, and a 2nd level warlock spell. Now you don’t need the Magic Weapon spell.
You could argue the Lady of the Lake is his patron. But at the same time it doesn't really make much sense to dip three levels into Warlock. Since for all their magic properties both Caliburn and Excalibur are physically present weapons. Hell Arthur lost Caliburn so he needed a replacement. And as he lay dying he gave Bedivere Excalibur to return to the Lady of the Lake. None of that sounds like a pact weapon Arthur can summon at will.
Before I could even finish typing up my comment about missing a golden opportunity for a Monty Python quote, you go and remind me to just sit back and trust the master with a Whose Line Is It reference. Well played!
I dig this video, focusing on characters from myth is super cool! I feel like if you were to make a real honest to god Arthur you'd more or less just go 20 levels of glory paladin with multiple magic items, but obviously thats not an option here so this is also good
Level 13 Paladin would let you score a critical divine smite with the maximum damage dice (level 4 spell slot), I think it is more flavorful and fun than +1 Ac and a bonus action heal. Also for people wanting to play this, I would not suggest building your character with Extra attack after level 8, I got it at level 11 in a campaign and went from being a medium tank/healer to the highest dpr in a party full of casters and could have done so sooner if I planned it out that way.
"You failed some Insight checks on your wife and best friend." And (probably?) uncle. And son. And sister, according to Thomas Mallory. Gotta love how most of his important losses/failures are tied to being too trusting.
I kinda love that Clive Owen’s “King Arthur” graces the thumbnail but not any of the clips. Then again, that movie was all about looking cool rather than coherent story anyway!
Indeed. The Scabbard made it impossible for one carrying it to bleed, while Excalibur would grant its wielder the gift of invincibility. That's the reason why he got mortally wounded in his fight with Mordred. Earlier on, the scabbard was stolen en replaced by a fake. Arthur was still invincible thanks to Excalibur, but no longer protected from harm. Nice reference indeed!
I'd really like to see Turok giving a crack at a build for Arsène Lupin, the Gentleman Burglar. I'd imagine it would be combo of his previous build of Sherlock and Ezio, but could be wrong.
Fun fact: Jesse Faden's gun canonically is the exact same weapon as Excalibur; it just chose a more familiar form for her. So she's ALSO an Excalibur-wielding leader with self healing abilities.
Excalibur isn't the healing thing, the sheath is what heals. The specifics of that is what got Arthur killed in the end, the sheath was stolen, so he lost the heal from anything part while keeping the "will win" thing from Excalibur, so he won but was mortally wounded. Of course, Arthur was loaded with magical gear. 3 different magical swords (only one of which was destroyed), dagger, lance, sheath, flying boat, a magical bridle, and more...
Would you consider doing knull from the king in black venom story? I think it would be shadow sorcerer hexblade or conquest paladin hexblade/shadow sorcerer. Can’t decide.
And if you have an nice enough DM that lets you haggle, you could get some form of magical long range attack *cough*eldritch blast*cough*, (with balance in mind surely). Just so you can also do an anime and have sword beams come out of your sword.
So, is it possible that we will get a Odysseus or Achilles build, even tho you‘d have to do reading to make it? That guy also would be „just like from legends“
Surprised we did not use clips from Excalibur, Quest for Camelot, Camelot the musical, and Arthur and the Knights of Justice............. though THAT king arthur is frozen in a block of magic and its a football player named Arthur King that is sitting on the throne at the time for............ saturday morning reasons.
@@auroragamer1 That is a valid point. Perhaps Fireball is then the Holy Rocket Launcher of Jerusalem? That clearly exists and isn’t something I just made up.
Seeing the goals you set and pausing first... predicting Hexblade + Oath of Glory, _maybe_ with Bard if you want to emphasize the leadership abilities. and possibly a Fighter dip cause Surge is always sweet. Kept watching, and I think the level distribution is less than optimal TBH...
Artoria would just be a Paladin build with intelligence and possibly charisma as a dump stat. Maybe with a few dips of fighter. Since most of her followers seem to resent her holier than thou attitude and extreme self sacrifice.
Gonna be completely real, I feel like the mythos of King Arthur is the only situation where you'd be able to use True Strike effectively, what with the amount of invisibility that goes on there, true strike to get advantage to negate the disadvantage

Before I could even finish typing up my comment about missing a golden opportunity for a Monty Python quote, you go and remind me to just sit back and trust the master with a Whose Line Is It reference. Well played!
The thumbnail is one of my favorite movies as a kid.
I dig this video, focusing on characters from myth is super cool!
I feel like if you were to make a real honest to god Arthur you'd more or less just go 20 levels of glory paladin with multiple magic items, but obviously thats not an option here so this is also good
This is great!
Bro has gotta do Merlin now
Danny Phantom! Also hell yeah I've been waiting for this one
Love the build!
Danny Phantom next
No Guiding Bolt? Excalibur COULD fire bolts of energy, ya know. It was the original "Sword Beam."
I don't know if Tulok did any Resident Evil builds recently, but it would be pretty cool to see builds for Mr. X, G, and Nemesis.
Anyone else get a huge nostalgia hit when the Arthur theme played?
Oh yeah!
Fantastic choice for opening music!
I've read every piece of Arthurian legend and I want to say that he totally had divine sense
"You failed some Insight checks on your wife and best friend."
And (probably?) uncle.
And son.
And sister, according to Thomas Mallory.
Gotta love how most of his important losses/failures are tied to being too trusting.
Always awesome. Will you one day cover Ty Lee from Avatar
More dread? Well done, sir. Well done...
I'd love to see you tackle other mythical figures like Sun Wukong or Hercules! Like the accurate to myth versions I mean
I kinda love that Clive Owen’s “King Arthur” graces the thumbnail but not any of the clips. Then again, that movie was all about looking cool rather than coherent story anyway!
The dungeons and daddies reference!
"Can a level 2 Monk smite?" no, BUT THEY SHOULD
I kinda wanna see a Sun Wukong build.
@@JK96Jt Obviously Journey to the West, favourite myth
he's like level 40 in everything. Though the journey of a character to raise their abysmal wisdom stat would be great
It was Excalibur's sheath that made him invulnerable. Not the sword itself.
Wow. I wondered what else he used the sheath for.
@@AwesomeWookiee The Latin word for sheath is Vagina...have fun with that.
Why not the Swords Bard, you ask? Valor! Valor! A knight is sworn to valor!
@@AzraelThanatos just like how Jesse Faden was loaded with supernatural gear
Yeah, I've been interested in the bard, hexblade, paladin build to be good at almost everything
im genuinely surprised that tulok picked up a level in fighter instead of another level in warlock for pact of the blade
Would you consider doing knull from the king in black venom story? I think it would be shadow sorcerer hexblade or conquest paladin hexblade/shadow sorcerer. Can’t decide.
Surely, having now done King Arthur, Mary Poppins must be next.
Shout out to Tulok for finally continuing with the Fate characters.
Is this the first of many Legendary builds?
Just make sure your wiz granpa casts Sequester on you, so you can be a true Once and Future King
Okay, I have to ask, why no video footage of King Arthur and the Knights of Justice?
Was that a Dungeons and Daddies reference i caught?
Woo, Merlin clips! 😁
Did we get pact weapon? Without it we can't use hex warrior with a 2 handed weapon, and we have great weapon fighting so I assume that's the intent.
Long sword is versatile.
@@JS-uk7du Great Weapon Fighting requires a weapon with the Heavy property, which longswords do not have.
What do I have to take in order to use his most iconic weapon the Holy hand granade of Antioch
Fireball.
@@MagusAgrippa8 Nonsense, its holy power clearly can only be emulated by Sunburst!
Can you please stack Merlin? I really wanna know how to make him in dnd!!!
You mean a high *Caliburn* leader. 😉
Good one.
Ah yes King Arthur. Now we can get King Arthur (saber).
Artoria would just be a Paladin build with intelligence and possibly charisma as a dump stat. Maybe with a few dips of fighter.
Since most of her followers seem to resent her holier than thou attitude and extreme self sacrifice.
if this is the closest we're getting to Saber, I will take it
In the official dnd 1e king Arthur is a bard paladin while Excalibur is a holy avenger sword of sharpness
Gonna be completely real, I feel like the mythos of King Arthur is the only situation where you'd be able to use True Strike effectively, what with the amount of invisibility that goes on there, true strike to get advantage to negate the disadvantage
You need to be able to see your opponent in order to gain advantage with True Strike.
Can we add Achilles to the list of characters to build
Suggestion for the next "How to Play"
Dr. Livesey
I would like to suggest Megabyte from Reboot for another villain character build in D&D
Could you please make Ronan the Accuser (from Guardians of the Galaxy 1)?
“You need 17 levels of wizard to be invulnerable for 10 minutes.” So, no D&D Achilles build, then?
Thanks.
Long live the king
