- The 2013 Chevrolet Malibu's new 2.5L engine with direct injection is expected to be one of the quietest and most refined in the segment. It will be available in the new Malibu next summer. The 2.5L development team reduced noise intensity by 40-percent of the Ecotec 2.4L engine, which was already a Ward's 10 Best Engines award winner. It also passed subjective evaluations of what sounds good as the engine climbs through its rpm band. To Malibu's passengers, that is expected to mean a quieter driving experience and a more refined sound as the engine revs to its 7,000-rpm peak. Specifically, the engine's noise frequency signature was targeted, with the aim of pushing radiated noises into a higher frequency range well above 2,000 hertz, which is more pleasing to the ear -- particularly in the high-load operating ranges where engine sound is the most intensive.
My 2015 is quite and refined. Excellent wind noise suppression as well. 188k and quieter than my wife’s 2023 Rav 4 by far. Great job guys, I’d recommend this engine in a heartbeat
have a 2015 chevy malibu LT outstanding motor so far have 167k only basic tune ups so far very happy with it
How about now? Any problems?
Any updates ?
I bought my 2008 Malibu new in '07. I now have over 164,000+ and it's never been to the shop. We love it. I just passed it down to my son. It is still a looker.
I have a 2014 chevy malibu with the 2.5 and it's a fantastic motor. Quiet and powerful. Great job
I got me a 2016 Malibu LTZ 2 weeks ago , grate power to waight distribution, comfy quite ride & the ecotec works wonders , i will take care of it & will keep it for a very long time , love it!
i have the 2.5L malibu LTZ its actually pretty powerful. lots of torque
Anthony Bush has your Malibu ever had the temperature hand to raise up and down while driving down the road?
Rachel Taylor My car just did that yesterday and i found the problem to be the water pump, thermostat and housing.
I traded in my 08 Malibu for a 17 Impala with the same engine. It has improved tremendously. I barely notice the engine in my Impala. People think it's a hybrid or electric. It also has much more HP and gets about 2-3 miles per gallon better.
It just better have the high RPM whine that the 2.4 does, I love that.
These were low-stressed, quiet, and reliable engines that used timing chains. I’ve had 2017 Impala with this engine and have had no engine issues with around 70,000 miles on it so far. Just changed oil and oil filter regularly.
190 hp base sedan. That's actually pretty good. Considering you get 28/35mpg. It's definitely enough to cart the family around. Remember it's a base sedan...
197 actually. the 2.0 turbo has more
This engine is in my 2016 Chevy Colorado (pickup). I like it and it certainly is quiet. Shortly after I bought it I was parked and idling, but thought I had turned it off, so tried to start it. Nothing happened, because the truck is smart enough to know it is already running. It took me a few seconds to figure out what happened. Now I look at the tach before I start it.
Glad to see GM behind the scenes doing great things
I loved my Malibu and miss it...the quietest car I've ever owned and even with high mileage it never leaked or burned any fluids, just a great great car.. have the 2.4 in my equinox and it randomly drinks a quart of oil right before next oil change, go figure
The engine is quiet now if Chevy could figure out whats wrong with the Auto Stop feature on 2014 and above vehicles that has the dealerships pulling their hair out trying to fix. CEL comes on setting code P305F, when checking batteries dealers tell customers the batteries are bad at a cost of $800.00 (dealer installed price) which does not fix the problem. They told me the same thing but I did not take their word because the car was running fine I pulled both batteries, checked with my equipment and then to make sure I had them checked at 2 different parts houses all checked good.
Super Nice car I Love my Malibu
Same engine 2.5 in 2014 Ecotec Malibu I need the location of the MAP sensor also known as the Barometric. Please help
design a motor that last I don't care if the noise cost me a engine that can last 200k mile.
@Michael Gozzi what year
2014 malibu LS 210k miles and runs great, well maintained but ran hard
I drive a 2013 eco 2.4 that it burns oil and make funny noise that comes frome alternator 220 miles still runs great I make shure has oil no problems I love it
I can say I drove this and it's alot quieter than my honda accord 3.0 v6. My accord on a cold start is completely embarrassing.. the cabin on the malibu when you give it alot of fuel is shockingly quiet..
I got one back in June last year and its saying on the codes my timing chain and throttle body are bad
My 2013 ATS head gasket blown. Maybe it was from not changing the oil regularly enough.
They musta skipped mine .My engine now sounds a bit noisy my cabin isn't quiet at all.
I want it to sound like the old VVT u guys made
How can I buy new complete Engine ?
@itssimpleiwinyoulose You DO realize this car only shares the chassis with the Opel which is OWNED by GM right?
So again how is this a copy?
Noise is bad--Sound is good
why are you being so dramatic. Not everyone cares about blazing performance in a family car.
replace one of these motors with a used one from junk yard(engine sucked in water). Replace motor has a ticking near 2nd fuel pump area(driver-side rear valve cover). replaced parts, still can't find problem. Is there a oil prime procedure? Anyone have experience with this?? thanks
That guy looks like Eminem
Big car...
Ok enough with the quietness and refinement of the engine lets here about a turbo in the making since they just had to drop the V6 for fuel economy.
my shit just started to knock ...not the normal noise...a loud knockin...smh
I'm in 2024 driving a 2013 and just trying to learn how to fix on my own car so I don't have to go to the mechanic anymore
Why not make gasket and components that at least go past 30k.
what is the hp rating
200hp @6300, 205 ftlbs @4400
is just me or does this dude come across like a community college tech student?
Went back to a spin on filter, some confusion about bypass. cmon GM make up ur dam mind.
My engine blew at 75k still under manufacturer warranty and they don't want to fix it🙄 so now I'm paying for a car that I can't even drive 😡
Never buy a GM product again. I learned my lesson after owning two of their cars. They've been POS since they went bankrupt .Buy a Toyota or Honda you will be less stressed over the long haul. American cars are money pits and GM Could careless about you.
@@kerwin392 i agree
Do you know exactly what happen to your engine im just curious
What year and model of vehicle?
lost water pump at 41000
What year is your car
Coolant change done at proper interval? With the proper coolant? By chevy dealership? These are important questions before you come on here and state your water pump failed, maybe its some you did 🤷♂️
@@rickmjr9569 no he's right
I'm sorry but that is bullshit, smaller engines last just as long, plenty of small engines have, look at all the Toyota corolla's still running along with the 22r 4 cylinder in Toyota trucks, and cant forget the gm iron duke 2.5 bullet proof.
My s-10 had a 2.5 ho(yes, they made a high output version). Blew up the engine at 160k, piston rings where shot. Can't say it was reliable. Had more problems than my Dads's '74 911 Targa.
Mine just drop a valve into piston 120 000 miles 😒
look at you mr. engineer. you do all these tests, and not a damn one of them probably pertains to the real world.
Seriously! Sound? WGAS! We want more power with better fuel economy. Who cares how loud the engine is?
Then your transmission breaks a wave plate at 103,000 miles an you have to take the entire front end apart to replace it but my engine is quiet lmao
F A I L
Alll that talking and we didnt get to hear the damn engine?
It's just that quiet.
Your customers want a fucking engine that doesnt burn off oil and cause your timing chains and tensioner to fail. We also want a water pump that lasts more than 46000 miles and while I'm ranting...hiw about those shitty fuckin wheel hubs I had to have replaced at 12000 miles because GM said they werent covered under warranty? Last POS GM car I'll EVER waste money on.
This engine is on par with a mercedes 2.5-16 cosworth, what was essentially a racing engine for the road, so yeah, clearly it's garbage. Just shut up already.
Laughable.
Since this video was made in 2013 and it is 2020 of this posting the Ecotec engine has been used for a few years now and the verdict is not good.
What good is a quiet engine when it burns oil badly among other issues like this one does.
Just go online and check out feedback from actual customers and complaints on Ecotec engines is a mile long.
Sounds like you need to address your PCV valve system 🤔 Start there and work your way down to even your drain plug....Could be simple or maybe youre right, I have 131,600 miles on my baby, i treat it better than my ex wife 🤣 i have become an honorary chevy engineer by doing hours and hours of research, keeping my malibu running even better considering where i originally found her, AT A RENTAL CAR LOT (41,000 miles already on it)🤯 so trust me, take a harder look, its probably no big deal, good luck....🤪
The 2.5 actualy doesnt have the real oil burning problem that the 2.4 has
@@lpetarp3915 thanks for that
I just bought a used 2013 for my kids first car. I can't believe how bad GM cars are. My wifes 2002 Altima was leaps and bounds better than this 2013 Malibu and that was 11 years ago.
Pos engine! Got a 13 Malibu...always stalling at a stop after I changed & clean everything that can cause it. Still does it...
You know these have a stop start design right...
Lol that's part of the design
Your joking right?
The cabin so noisy not even the engine the whole car is noisy looks like the cabin not insulated
Quiet makes the car boring. LOL.
Lol failed on waterpump and alternator.
